Crab cake sandwich
Sandy A.

Wow. This place is bomb. Really de lions Che with lots of yummy fruit and jelly and such a light and not too too overwhelming flavor. Love. It. Also the crab cake sandwich is so goood for the price and love the way it's packaged in a cute box. Can't wait to try other items here!!!

Spring rolls
Austin W.

I had the chance to try out Mon Superette today because my wife had a yoga class nearby on Piedmont and picked up some food to-go for the two of us. She grabbed a crab sandwich from the ready-made section along with an order of spring rolls. The spring rolls were some of the best I've had. The lettuce inside was crisp and refreshing, paired nicely with the fragrant sprigs of mint. The shrimp were plump, and the vermicelli noodles had a nice bounce to them--just like the outer rice paper wrapper, which had great texture. The rolls were tightly wrapped, making them easy to eat without the filling falling apart. Poorly made rolls often unravel with each bite, but that wasn't an issue here. The accompanying peanut sauce was well balanced -- sweet and savory, though a bit thinner than I personally prefer. Nonetheless, it was a very enjoyable dipping sauce that I wish I had more of. The crab sandwich was excellent. The crab cake had the crispy, golden texture of a deep-fried hash brown but was generously packed with crab meat. It was topped with just the right amount of slaw: enough to add contrast without overpowering the crab. Even after sitting for a bit, the bread held up well and didn't get soggy. You get three pieces per order, making it a great option for sharing. This casual, to-go venture from the team behind Bacogai is seriously impressive. I'll definitely be back to try some of their hot food items next time.

Egg sando and che thai
Carina L.

I came at the end of the day and got what was left: che thai, fancy pork spring rolls, and egg sando. Their peanut sauce is different - thick and not drippy. Spring roll is made with banh hoi noodles so it held together well. Not messy and didn't break easily. The egg sando was also good and not drippy and messy. They messed up my banh mi order but was willing to remake it. It is pricey for Viet deli food but it is healthy and decent. I haven't tried the sandwich and che thai yet but so far so good. The owner seems more Chinese than Viet and she can speak Spanish so pretty cool.

Great Asian lunch selections from their grill or in a grab n go format, featuring Japanese Sandos and Vietnamese Spring Rolls and much more. Fast and friendly staff is right there to take your order and get you on your way! Eat in? There is a small counter along the storefront window for you to enjoy your meal. As expected, this little storefront embodies that weekday lunch kinda vibe, but with modern touches in their simple decor. One of the things I miss from Japan are the convenience stores serving really fresh, inexpensive and delicious Japanese sandos (sandwiches). Thankfully Mon Superette has bravely stepped up to answer the call! I loved their crab cake sandwich and the egg salad was good too. Both were served on soft pillowy milk bread with the crust trimmed off in the Japanese style. It was almost like eating a cloud! I can't wait to be back for another crab cake sando!! They said that they will be expanding their grab n go menu soon too!

4/17/25 - Long overdue review! I was exploring Oakland and wanted to try this small shop for their sandwiches! The owner was really nice and the sandwich was as good as it looked in pictures! I think I may have gotten the crab cake sando. Anyway... I would totally go back if I'm ever in the area. There's not a lot of seating, but most customers just did grab and go. I can't remember if I took phone pics of the shop, but here are some film pics I took of it.

Cute food togo, yummy Vietnamese taste. Grab and go service. Recommended. Update 9/15/25: Now they have the famous Vietnamese Saigon Banh mi, excellent taste of Saigonnais elites before 1975. Delicious in compare with 2 famous places in Saigon before 1975. 1. Banh mi gà Duyên Dáng on Lê Văn Duyệt, Q.3 2. Banh mi Jambon and Gà rôti Hương Lan of Nhà Thờ Đức Bà or Bưu Điện Saigon.

I am so into the idea of this place and hope to make an updated review that's different than this one. I have to be honest though and say the tofu summer rolls were bland and underwhelming. For that price ($9) they should def be bigger and taste like something. They will also need to find a way to separate them because they stick together and are likely to rip apart. The tofu is plain/no flavor, definitely needs to be seasoned. There were no herbs at all and the dipping sauce was ehh and couldn't save it. I will come back to try some more items and am hopeful they can improve the summer rolls. A couple stars given because staff is pleasant and the place is a good little grab and go spot idea. They gotta up their game cause it's a good concept for those that don't want Ebiko sushi up the way.

This coffee packs a punch! You only need a little.

This mini-mart is perfect for a quick bites to-go. It's the sister shop to Bacogai in Alameda, so no surprise the food here is fresh and tasty, as well! This was my second time stopping in. I highly recommend the Crab Cake Sando, the Garden Salad with Shrimp, the Fancy Pork Summer Rolls and of course, the delicious Vietnamese Ice Coffee! BONUS: they have the good ice!! If you know, you know!! The service is always friendly and the ambiance is welcoming. You won't regret picking up lunch from Mon Superette!

freshly fried banana
Eri S.

freshly batter-fried banana. is it the best cold-weather snack? def was on a chilly grey wednesday afternoon in February! late late lunch stop to check out this newish to-go place. there's a small window bench where you can wait a few minutes for your banana but it's not really space to eat. there's a small refrigerated case that holds ready-made sandos, salads, bowls and drinks (there may be more if you go closer to lunch?). think they also make hot drinks to order. sandos on milk bread, sliced in thirds. i appreciated that the small rectangles were easier to eat neatly - tho i might just be a messy eater. tried the crab cake because its season, was tasty and had to leave 1/3 for later because banana but the panko crust was still slightly crunchy even the next morning. slaw helped balance both flavor and texture. soft but never mushy milk bread keeps softer fillings from squeezing out. but. the. banana! hot, crunchy, sesame flecked lightly sweet coating holds melty banana lava. you can't help but break into it immediately as you walk down the street nibbling and grinning and make everybody else want one.

Shredded teeny tiny pieces of the lemon grass pork...almost like hamburger meat

With my luck, my car would smell like hello kitty for weeks. Anyhow, I found Mẹ Và Con on yelp, a mother-daughter owned resto that opened in 2024. They serve bánh khọt and have outdoor seating so we headed over. Thankfully, we arrived before the Sunday dinner rush (~5:45 pm) and before the parking lot was filled. Rezzies are accepted (via phone). M E N U Viet Cuisine with some elevated, modern twists (no specific regional specialty). Smaller menu than your typical hole-in-the-wall with 25-30 items including AZN fusion items like shrimp ceviche, kimchi pasta and tom yum pasta. Beer, wine, and soju cocktails available. F O O D * Bò Tái Chanh: Beef Carpaccio w/ Thai basil, fried shallot, house tangerine sauce ($18): https://tinyurl.com/nhcn9kxw - Served at dinner only Fresh, tender slices of beef carpaccio with a sweetness from the tangerine sauce and white onions. I appreciate their twist (tangerine sauce instead of nước chấm) but it was too one note for me...IMO, it needed acid and herbs. Plus, I miss the texture of peanuts. * Bánh Khọt: Viet Mini Pancakes w/ shrimp, coconut milk batter, herbs, pickles ($24): https://tinyurl.com/34nx7sat - Served at dinner only Fav dish of the night, the savory bánh khọt was delicately crispy and slightly custardy in the center with a snappy shrimp drizzled with fragrant scallion oil. It came with romaine, mint, and perilla leaves neatly layered for easy wrapping. The lettuce was a bit soft and soggy tho, and I think they forgot the pickled veggies. Served with a tiny portion of tangy sweet nước chấm. * Bò Lúc Lắc: Shaking Beef w/ soy, garlic, onion, cherry tomato, arugula ($26): https://tinyurl.com/3rkpukct Meltingly tender cubes of filet mignon but light on the seasoning and aromatics so it was bland. Also, was hoping for more smoky wok hei flavor. * Thịt Kho Tàu: Braised Pork Belly w/ hard boiled eggs, rice ($21): https://tinyurl.com/mr2evryw - Includes bowl of rice A traditional dish served during Lunar New Year, it symbolizes prosperity, warmth, and stability. Chunks of pork belly are caramelized in sugar and braised in coconut soda and fish sauce - rich, savory with a good ratio of lean meat to fat (4 pieces). Wish they used more braising liquid when warming up, as some pieces were a bit dry. S E R V I C E Warm, friendly hospitality. Food does take awhile tho...our first dish took about 30 minutes to arrive. A M B I A N C E Casual, no-frills indoor area with about 10-12 tables. Cute covered patio in the parking lot with 5 tables and fairy lights. Overall, Mẹ Và Con is a great place to introduce people that are new to Viet cuisine and/or you're looking for Viet dishes with different twist.

I can say…read morethat it is the best authentic vietnamese banh mi in the east bay as I've tried many other spots that haven't particularly matched or exceeded their level of quality. I usually order a #2, #7, and #13. It's very affordable, especially if you're on a strict budget for lunch. $7 sandwiches? I mean it's a pretty good deal. #2 Banh Mi Dac Biet/Special Combo Ham Sandwich - If you're looking for a cold italian sandwich but want to explore new options this is a vietnamese version that also has pate butter taking it to the next level. #7 Banh Mi Xiu Mai/Meat Ball & Egg Sandwich - An elevated version of the #3 with an added egg. This was my absolute favorite as a child and still is now. Nice balance of sweet and salty. The meat is tender and with the added egg yolk that pops when you take a bite takes it the next level. I think this is also slept on since I don't see many people ordering it. #13 Banh Mi Xa Xiu/BBQ Pork Sandwich - This is their secret weapon. My god the sweetness from the bbq pork with the pate butter is incredible. I always look forward to eating the bottom end of the sandwich because that's where most of the flavor and butter are hiding. The pickled veggies help give it the acidity it needs for a well balanced bite. By far my favorite. They also have many other options besides banh mi that make and sell on the day of like Banh Cuon, Che, Egg rolls, etc. Definitely give those a try especially the Mochi Ham sandwich aka Banh Day they got there too. I always have a hard time choosing between the #7 & # 13 so I always end up getting both. Service is straight forward, you line up, order, and wait for them to call you up for your order. Simple. You don't have to ask me twice if I want to grab some banh mi here. But do be aware that at certain hours of the day it can get very busy and crowded. Either to super early when opening or closer to closing about an hour before. For new comers, I highly recommend starting off with #7 or #13 for your introduction to their banh mi for a better first time experience.

The ratio of bread to meat to pickled vegetables was not great. The pate, which I usually love, was also off and had an unusually strong unpleasant smell. The only thing that made the sandwich edible was the bread itself. It was fresh light and airy as I remember it to be. I hope they will focus and maintain quality in the future. I regretted spending $65 there for food I was afraid to feed my family.

We had a hard time ordering because he kept trying to explain things in broken English. We'd eaten there before, we have no problem ordering by menu number when a waitstaff speaks little English. After a long series of confusions we managed to order. Then my friend wasn't feeling well and asked for a to go box while I was still eating. Ooops. Our waiter came with an array of boxes and wanted to pack everything up. He couldn't understand my asking him to please leave the boxes and leave us alone please. I refused to let him box up my dinner, so he left and came back with the POS machine, cradling it lovingly with its list of tips, 20% basic ok, 25% good service, 30% if you reeeally loved his excellent service. Since tips were 15% for decades, and 10% in Calif when I waitressed, the same tip percentage raises the waiter's income as the cost of food increases with inflation. I do leave 18% since it's now customary, 20%+ on occasion. So I asked for the receipt to see the amount before tax and calculate manually, but he had only a hand scribbled total. His eager greed had the POS machine quivering in his palms, jellifying my brain, I gave up and entered a rough low estimate. Went home and reheated my dinner. Only takeout from this place if I ever return.

Because once you are seated, you're served immediately to get you on the way. With service, don't expect tier 1 experience, but you'll get your water/tea. Savor it, don't assume they'll come back while you're still eating. Just saying! There's a few things on the menu that are must have.. 1. Chow Jew Ho Fun with soup on the side - the obvious that everyone orders. I like to get soup on the side, and then put about two tablespoons soup back into my noodle and add all the sauces! Then occasionally, sip the soup to wash everything down. 2. Beef Stew Ho Fun - My boyfriend's must have. Flavorful, soft meat, delicious. 3. Fish Cakes - Personally, I don't care for fish cakes, but my boyfriend and his family order it all the time, so of course I'll still eat it. It's still good. I'm just a person who feels I can buy it from the banh mi shops and it taste the same. Lol I don't eat anything else here. This is one of those restaurants where you go and eat what they're known for, not wander off too far away from the menu because the other stuff is just legit filler items. The only problem I have is, it's so expensive now for a small bowl. So it makes me not want to come back, but at the same time, flavors are really good. You just would think with the amount of customers, the business thriving, you could at least keep the portion size the same as before..
