    Grilled Pork Sandwich
    June R.

We were looking for a quick bite near a meeting in Oakland and stumbled upon Pho Sho Dough--honestly, the name alone reeled us in! It's a small takeout spot with a few seats, and even though we came close to closing time, the service was super friendly and quick. We ordered the grilled pork banh mi, the lemongrass beef banh mi, and a shrimp spring roll. The shrimp roll was unique--the shrimp was fully cooked and marinated in a flavorful sauce, not your average fresh roll, and it was delicious. Both banh mis were excellent--the bread was perfectly crisp on the outside and chewy on the inside, and they were generously packed with savory flavorful meat and plenty of pickled veggies. We brought everything back to San Francisco, and even after the drive, it all still tasted amazing. Definitely a great find--highly recommend if you're in the area!

More of a to-go place (unless you want to sit on the curbside patio) is this gem of a Vietnamese place. It's a no frills place for the most basic Vietnamese food - pho, banh mi, and spring rolls/egg rolls. Their egg rolls are one of a kind. They're crunchy, hefty, and generous. We also got their spring roll wrapped egg rolls (aka a typical spring roll with shrimp but imagine the spring roll filled with an egg roll instead of shrimp). We also got the grilled pork vermicelli and it was a generous portion. We will most definitely be back - especially since their service was so fast. We got our food in less than 15 min! You can also call in to shorten the wait time. Easy street parking too!

Love this place! The staff is always friendly with quick service. The Pho is yummy. So are the spring rolls. If you're looking for something quick and healthy that won't break the bank this is your place. There's no inside seating which works on a nice day. However, to go works well too.

Jamie W and I have been enjoying visits to the White Horse Inn on random Saturdays for a while now. We had noticed this corner Vietnamese takeout spot but didn't try it until quite recently when I was having a post-cocktail hankering for pho. Luckily Jamie was starving, too, so we ended up sharing three familiar items and having them at the outdoor table next to the big mural (photo: https://yelp.to/X_xPeJEy5i). We started with the $9.95 Fresh Shrimp Spring Rolls, which were generously assembled with lettuce, vermicelli, and plenty of split prawns encased in translucent rice paper accompanied by a sweet peanut dipping sauce (photo: https://yelp.to/_UapbYqWp6). The second item was the $9.95 Grilled Pork Banh Mi which, a soft French roll robustly stuffed with pork, cucumber, shredded carrot and radish, and cilantro (photo: https://yelp.to/xGzS28kOct). That was definitely one of the better banh mis I've had outside of Saigon Sandwich. The $14.95 Roasted Chicken Noodle Soup wasn't technically pho but Hu Tieu Ga Nuong, a South Vietnamese soup with a lighter broth and larger chunks of chicken (photo: https://yelp.to/2ioXM-lGKJ). I don't think I've had this variation before, but it was pretty satisfying. All in all, this was a nice find on Telegraph for hearty Vietnamese eats. FOOD - 4 stars...pretty tasty and quite generous AMBIANCE - 3.5 stars...well, it's really a takeout spot SERVICE - 4 stars...quite efficient and friendly TOTAL - 4 stars...solid Vietnamese fare with regional variations from the norm RELATED - Exploring Oakland? This is the kind of place that makes you wonder how everyone else has been doing it wrong the whole time because everything they make is so good. Have ate here several times and frequent both locations, easily the best most authentic bahn mi in the bay, (yes there's patè). Amazing hospitality and clean establishments. I came in with my partner and the owner came out and gave us some warm lemongrass ginger tea while we wait for our food. Strongly recommend!

It might not be easy to tell from the picture I uploaded, but the sandwiches here are massive! I got mine with lemongrass beef. It was very flavorful, the bread was toasted nicely, and it was so filling I had to wrap up half of it to-go. It's not a huge place, but there are a couple of tables right outside on the side street (which is pretty quiet and peaceful). Service was good -- staff made sure to walk around with water refills. I would definitely come back to try another sandwich and their other items!

Man! We missed our pho spot since moving away from the east bay! These flavors are a mix of new school meets old school! Service makes you feel like you're at your Vietnamese family members house! Super friendly and always has a joke to make you smile :) ! I've tried many things on the Menu at both locations. Our favorite besides the pho with the delicious broth is the chicken vermicelli noodle bowls! They fill that thing to the brim! Right now we're on our vegetarian hype right now so didn't get it w/ chicken this time! But trust! It's fire! If you are in the area and looking for a nice hot bowl of pho or just great food, COME HERE!

The fried egg rolls reminds me of the ones on Guam. So on this alone I'm going to give it 5 starts they are huge compared to other Vietnamese restaurants in the Bay Area. They were also tasty. You order inside and you eat on the sidewalk good if it's a nice day out. The service was pretty good and attentive.

We came back for round two and ordered the fried spring rolls! Honestly probably the best egg rolls I've had in a long time -- the perfect amount of crisp and the flavor was delicious!

This is already on my top five list in a single visit. Went for the basics: beef pho, and salad roll with tofu. I was initially put off by the short menu and few options to add toppings (I didn't see any tendon or tripe for example), and worried it would be too bland or too sweet--but it was not. The broth was deeply flavorful and more savory. Meats were generous and meatballs were exceptional, maybe the best I've had. The basil and sprouts were garden fresh, and unusually, the rice noodles were exceptional, not at all soft or pressed together. I could genuinely taste the love here. It extended to the salad rolls which were generously portioned and used lightly fried tofu which I prefer. One additional note about the broth. It's a richer style than I normally like so I couldn't drink it to the last drop, but I can't fault its great flavor. The service was above average, with a spirited vibe. Loved everything, will be back to try more on the menu.

I brought my friend for her to try a new viet spot since she typically only goes to one spot and she absolutely loved it! Our favorite was the Banh Khot which are mini crispy pancakes with shrimp. I was not expecting it at all. They definitely do not joke about their servings. My friend got the Bun Bo Hue, lemongrass beef soup, which was better than other ones I've had in Downtown Oakland but not as lemongrassy as I like. My fiancé had the vermicelli bowl which he said was pretty good with all the stirred fried tofu, veggies and mushrooms. What was surprising the most was the Vietnamese pancake. It was so good that I would come back for just this appetizer. It has a crunchy texture on the outside, but the inside was so creamy. Wrap that with a lettuce and dip in the fish sauce and wow! Yes, I tried it over a dozen years ago and have little recollection of my dining experience (review: https://yelp.to/8rBLt3xnAB). Probably just as well because this was our first time at this location. We came on a Saturday afternoon looking for a late lunch. It was a nice space with interesting decorating touches like a collage of vintage photos and magazine clippings in a ribbon-like pattern on the gray wall (Photo 6). The place was almost empty, which allowed us to take the corner table next to the window. The menu looked like a slightly upmarket take on Vietnamese fare. We decided to share a couple of dishes since we had tentative dinner plans later. We ordered the $17 Shrimp Papaya Salad, a decent enough mix of green papaya and carrots in decorative latticed slices, crispy allium, herbs, and six poached shrimp, drenched in a spicy fish sauce vinaigrette and topped with peanuts and Thai basil (Photo 9). Tasty but a bit bland and wet. We then shared the $25 Fried Chicken characterized as chicken tempura, but the execution was lacking. It consisted of slices of thigh meat covered in a rather moist coating. There was fermented soy aioli and a side of pickled daikon, carrot and cabbage slaw in miso soy dressing (Photo 10). Even though the thigh meat was welcome, the dish didn't quite hang together. At the same time, the ingredients were fresh, and frankly other menu options might've improved our satisfaction.
