This place is a hit or miss depending on what you order. For the traditional Pho craving, this place hits the spot. But their dinner family style it's off it's mark. The Pho here is full and hearty with the standard condiments. For apps, go for their Fried Fish Cake, Fresh Summer Rolls, or Crispy Spring rolls. Papaya Salad was good, but hard to eat with just four shrimp chips. Their Banh Xeo batter was way too thick. Their Pho here is very good. the soup had the right amount of flavor and was steaming hot when they brough it out. Their house specials, were a bit lacking. Their "Thit Kho Trung" (Pork and Egg Stew in Clay Pot) and "Ca Kho To" (Carmelized Cat Fish Stew" missed the mark. The This Kho Trung wasn't stewed, and flavorless. Both dish the sauce was too watery and the caramelization. The service was excellent and they do play the traditional Vietnamese new wave music to try and make the ambiance more authentic.

Big Menu, Good Vermicelli, Attentive friendly service. Located on the outer edge of Oakland's Chinatown just a couple of short blocks away from Lake Merritt BART station and the Alameda County Courthouse is Nana Viet Kitchen. Casual, spacious restaurant with inviting wooden tables. I just had a bit of a hunger pang after a tiny breakfast, so after running an errand, I strolled in for a lunch entree after the lunch rush. My order was for a Grilled Pork Vermicelli Bowl. Overall the dish was good, with tons of pan-fried pork, but I wish there was a bit more lettuce, and I kind of prefer pork that is actually grilled instead of just fried, but it met the need. Lots of food for my $16. Loved the service here.. the folks really look after you, and your ice water!! A standout! Getting Here is trivial - there's tons of street parking and by transit, its's a piece of cake with BART or AC Transit within a 2-block radius.. Worth a shot.. .. I'd probably go for the Banh Mi; or a Pho' next time.

The first visit was on a weekday, so it was quiet and easy to find parking. The food came out quickly, and I ordered the MY THO'S STYLE DRY NOODLE (I swapped the noodles for egg noodles) and the Beef Stew - Bo Kho. The wait wasn't long, and both dishes were very tasty. The second visit was on a much busier day. Parking was quite challenging since it's all street parking, and we had to compete for spots. The restaurant was packed, but the staff did their best to take care of everyone and were attentive despite how busy it was. This time, we ordered two bowls of House Combination Pho - Pho Dat Biet and an appetizer of Summer Spring Rolls, which were delicious. Overall, the food here is really good, and it's definitely one of the better Pho spots I've tried. The restaurant is also quite clean. I would love to come back again, though I'd recommend going on a weekday if you can -- it's much easier for parking and there's less of a wait.

Tried this place for the first time today because I was craving bun rieu, which is one of my favorite Vietnamese dishes. I have had it many times from different restaurants, so I was excited when I saw photos on Yelp that looked really good. The only thing was, the photos were from when the restaurant was still called Mam Hanoi. Since the menu looked the same, I figured they probably kept the same recipes. The restaurant is in downtown Oakland, so I had to find metered parking. I was seated quickly and the service from the waiter was friendly. After ordering, he brought out the plate of herbs for the soup, but it was not what I normally expect with bun rieu. They gave me bean sprouts, jalapeños, Thai basil, and cabbage. Usually the more authentic places serve mint instead of Thai basil, plus shredded lettuce and other herbs. That already had me a little concerned before the soup even came out. When the bun rieu arrived, it definitely did not look like the photos I saw on Yelp. Bun rieu is usually served one of two ways. The "rieu" mixture of egg, pork, and crab can either be made into a meatball style or a custard style. The Yelp photos showed the meatball style, which I prefer because it has more flavor and texture. What I got was the custard style, which was soft and eggy, almost like tofu, and it just broke apart in the broth like egg drop soup. The broth itself was just okay. It did not have a lot of depth or umami. The meats included sliced pork, cha lua (Vietnamese meatloaf), and a lot of tofu. Honestly there was so much tofu that I had to pick some out. Other places I have been to serve a better variety of toppings, like pork ribs, shrimp, and the meatball style rieu, which makes the dish more satisfying. On top of that, my bowl had a chip in it, which was not the best presentation. Overall the service was nice and the restaurant was clean, but I probably would not come back. I used to live in San Jose where there are plenty of amazing Vietnamese spots, so it is hard not to compare. This one just did not feel as authentic as I am used to.

hu tieu, bun cha Ha Noi
Jade L.

We came here for lunch on NYE, and there was no wait to get seated. We ordered the hu tieu and bun cha Ha Noi platter to share, and both were very savoury and satisfying. I liked the broth the bun cha came with so much that I kept dipping all the veggies in it even after the meat was gone. The flavour was so good that I couldn't get enough. Some of the best bun cha I've had and would definitely recommend!

Such friendly service! Store was also very clean and able to accommodate a family of 8 next to us. Lunch time was busy but everyone seemed to have a seat on Friday. I love how they play Vietnamese music instead of just American pop. I've been to Hanoi before and felt the Bun Cha Hanoi dish was similar taste to what I had in Vietnam. I'm not Vietnamese but I felt it was delicious!

Bun Cha Hanoi- really flavorful and delish
Pam N.

The service and atmosphere are welcoming and friendly. Lovely decor and the person who took our order was so kind. Not the typical wham bam service you usually get. I don't mind either but it was a welcomed change of pace. They offer so many dishes that you typically don't see in regular pho restaurants. I was really overjoyed to see Bun Cha, Cha Ca, Bun Rieu, Banh xeo and banh khot all offered here! Like, whaaaat? You're lucky to get 2 of these items along with pho and rice plates, but all of them? Elite chef status here. Cha ca- the turmeric dill grilled fish with shrimp paste dipping sauce tingled my viet spidey sense. It's really rare to see this and I couldn't take my eyes and mind off of it. I think my past memories exceeded my expectations because this didn't meet it. The fish didn't have the nice dill flavor to it although they topped it heavily with it along with crispy garlic. And the shrimp paste dipping sauce was just salty. I didn't love it and won't get it next time. I'm glad I tried it tho. My favorite of it is still in San jose. Bun Cha Hanoi, on the other hand, was the star! Flavorful, generous portions of the pork and pork patty, it was slurping good. The sauce was so good I had to add it to my fish dish. I definitely recommend it to anyone who loves the usual vermicelli dishes. This is a level up. Overall, we are definitely coming back to try their other dishes. The location is great, just near all the other bakeries in the area.

Spicy beef egg noodles soup
Si Si L.

Came here for an early dinner on my own. I had it bookmarked as a place that I wanted to try but didn't have a note on why. I looked through the menu, and decided on the spicy noodle soup. I think it was supposed to be pho, but I asked for egg noodle instead. The service was fast since I was the only one there. The taste of the broth was ok. Pretty standard. The egg noodles weren't that more chewy texture that I like. Overall, the place was ok. Wished I knew why I bookmarked it.

Mam Hanoi in Oakland is worthy of a visit ~ solid Northern Vietnamese cuisine in casual digs with pricing that won't make you stretch the dollar too thin. I was feeling adventurous at a business lunch when trying and exploring a few different appetizers/shareables with others ~ the whole shrimp egg rolls, Gỏi Gà or chicken salad, Nem Cuon or the grilled pork cake spring rolls, Bò Tái Chanh, or Vietnamese Beef Carpaccio. I've never had any of these dishes before, especially the Carpaccio ~ honestly, I was surprised how much I loved it while also admiring how visually beautiful the dish and plating was. The mix of the raw meat and onion/peanut together in the vibrant complexities of the lemon juice/fish sauce alone..outstanding. The shrimp egg rolls were plump and crispy, loved how fresh the grilled pork cake rolls were with the peanut dipping sauce, and how flavorful the chicken salad was as a light addition. Would def. come back to support this area of Oakland that could use a bit more love, and the lovely and hard working staff. Thank you for the inspiring discovery of new foods for my palate! Metered parking available across the street and surrounding areas.

42. Grilled Pork Chop Over Rice
Emi R.

Wow wow wow! I ordered the pork chop & I have to say I was very impressed 2 pork chops for $16?! And it was marinated very well. Almost a sweet taste. It wasn't too tough or chewy it was just perfect. I enjoyed myself. The service was great the young lady helping us out was friendly, smiling, and recommending things from the menu. The ambiance is quiet it's a small place in china town but they had pretty good seating arrangements. Overall I'll definitely be back to try out more things on the menu.

My rice plate only came with one small dry piece of pork chop instead of two. Waiter tried to say that's all I'm given since I ordered the "combo plate" with sugarcane shrimp & egg. I then show him their recent yelp pics of the exact same order with TWO pork chops. He then just laughs and ask if I want another small piece. My sugarcane shrimp was extremely stale and rubbery like it's been reheated multiple times. I was really hoping this place would be better than mam Hanoi, but it was just disappointing . Skimpy portions, long wait times, and mediocre food. +1 star for the service considering the waiter/busboy/cashier did everything by himself.

We were planning to have Chinese until we came upon this restaurant and decided to eat here. The place was crowded and we were led to the back room. We ordered the bbq beef and rice (most popular) and the bbq pork chop with rice. The beef was nicely marinated and super tender. My pork chop was alright, tender in the middle but a bit dry on the edges. Overall, it was a good lunch. Waitresses were helpful and courteous.

With my luck, my car would smell like hello kitty for weeks. Anyhow, I found Mẹ Và Con on yelp, a mother-daughter owned resto that opened in 2024. They serve bánh khọt and have outdoor seating so we headed over. Thankfully, we arrived before the Sunday dinner rush (~5:45 pm) and before the parking lot was filled. Rezzies are accepted (via phone). M E N U Viet Cuisine with some elevated, modern twists (no specific regional specialty). Smaller menu than your typical hole-in-the-wall with 25-30 items including AZN fusion items like shrimp ceviche, kimchi pasta and tom yum pasta. Beer, wine, and soju cocktails available. F O O D * Bò Tái Chanh: Beef Carpaccio w/ Thai basil, fried shallot, house tangerine sauce ($18): https://tinyurl.com/nhcn9kxw - Served at dinner only Fresh, tender slices of beef carpaccio with a sweetness from the tangerine sauce and white onions. I appreciate their twist (tangerine sauce instead of nước chấm) but it was too one note for me...IMO, it needed acid and herbs. Plus, I miss the texture of peanuts. * Bánh Khọt: Viet Mini Pancakes w/ shrimp, coconut milk batter, herbs, pickles ($24): https://tinyurl.com/34nx7sat - Served at dinner only Fav dish of the night, the savory bánh khọt was delicately crispy and slightly custardy in the center with a snappy shrimp drizzled with fragrant scallion oil. It came with romaine, mint, and perilla leaves neatly layered for easy wrapping. The lettuce was a bit soft and soggy tho, and I think they forgot the pickled veggies. Served with a tiny portion of tangy sweet nước chấm. * Bò Lúc Lắc: Shaking Beef w/ soy, garlic, onion, cherry tomato, arugula ($26): https://tinyurl.com/3rkpukct Meltingly tender cubes of filet mignon but light on the seasoning and aromatics so it was bland. Also, was hoping for more smoky wok hei flavor. * Thịt Kho Tàu: Braised Pork Belly w/ hard boiled eggs, rice ($21): https://tinyurl.com/mr2evryw - Includes bowl of rice A traditional dish served during Lunar New Year, it symbolizes prosperity, warmth, and stability. Chunks of pork belly are caramelized in sugar and braised in coconut soda and fish sauce - rich, savory with a good ratio of lean meat to fat (4 pieces). Wish they used more braising liquid when warming up, as some pieces were a bit dry. S E R V I C E Warm, friendly hospitality. Food does take awhile tho...our first dish took about 30 minutes to arrive. A M B I A N C E Casual, no-frills indoor area with about 10-12 tables. Cute covered patio in the parking lot with 5 tables and fairy lights. Overall, Mẹ Và Con is a great place to introduce people that are new to Viet cuisine and/or you're looking for Viet dishes with different twist.

The pho, the rice plate and the bun were delicious! It's been a while since I enjoyed these dishes…read moreso much that this will now be my go to place and my recommended place for these entree. The pho was right on. Piping hot soup that didn't cool down until after you're done even on a cold day. That's just perfect for the wintery weather. The soup was so good - the right amount of aromatics and the beef flavor. And it wasn't overly oily. The amount of meat to noodle ratio was perfect, and I would even dare say I felt there was a lot of meat for a regular bowl of pho that I didn't end the pho with just noodles but had meat to go to the last bite. The rice plate, where we had pork chop with fried spring rolls was yummy! The pork chop was well seasoned that my kids ate it without complaining anything about it. Some places use black pepper and even too much of it to potentially cover up for lack of flavor or perhaps low quality meat. The fried spring rolls were delicious and not too oily either. The bun though with good amount of fresh greens was still a very filling bowl with the amount of meat, spring roll and noodles. The taste of it with the fish sauce was reminiscent of bun in Vietnam. The only thing that ok instead of being amazing was the marinated fried chicken with sauce as it was on the spicier side with the fresh chili and the marinate didn't seem to penetrate into the chicken well enough. Service was reasonably fast, but then again we were there before the restaurant filled up starting at 7pm.
