Ok I'll be honest. I was really planning to go to VH, but I couldn't find parking which was super frustrating and annoying... So I came here because I was able to find parking nearly across the street from this restaurant. The reviews look promising and I ordered the #25 because one reviewer said it was delicious. So for me, I didn't like the broth. if the broth is not great then it's over for me. It had a sweetness to it that I didn't expect or enjoy . If I go again I'll have to try something else.
I'd been seeing the Banh Khot all over my feed and I had to try it! My girlfriend and I met for an early dinner and I was happy to find this place didn't close between lunch and dinner. We got spring rolls, Banh Khot and fish sauce chicken wings. The spring rolls were ok, the sauce was watery. The Banh Khot was not as crunchy as I'd hoped, but it was flavorful. The wings were ok. The prices were Great, I wanted to live this spot but it was not memorable. My Banh Khot search continues .
10-15 minute walk from a few BART stations, Nana Viet served a lovely lunch for a party of 2 on a rainy Sunday. No wait, responsive and available staff. Pretty light, clean and spacious, lots of natural light, minimal, Vietnamese folk art, clean bathrooms. The Dua Coffee (coconut coffee - no half and half, just coconut cream) was incredible. I tried Bahn Koht for the first and i'm so glad I did. Light, crisp, flavorful, wrap it in fresh lettuce and fragrant herbs and you've got yourself a delectable bite. My main was a grilled lemongrass porkchop that wasn't too dry and very flavorful. My friend had the beef pho and said it was really good. I look forward to going again, nice place for lunch after the OMCA!
This restaurant is located China Town in Oakland on 10th and Harrison. We walked in and got seated right away. The place was welcoming and typical of any Vietnamese restaurant. We ordered the tofu bahn mi, tofu, veggies and mushroom vermicelli and Vietnamese pancake with shrimp. They were all amazing. The tofu in the banh mi was stirred fried w/ mushrooms not fried like how I'm used to. So it was a little different but very tasty. My fiancé had the vermicelli bowl which he said was pretty good with all the stirred fried tofu, veggies and mushrooms. What was surprising the most was the Vietnamese pancake. It was so good that I would come back for just this appetizer. It has a crunchy texture on the outside, but the inside was so creamy. Wrap that with a lettuce and dip in the fish sauce and wow! My mouth was happy. Service here is top notch! The server was super attentive and he knew just when we needed more napkins and more water. Would definitely recommend and will be back soon for those pancake!
This place is a hit or miss depending on what you order. For the traditional Pho craving, this place hits the spot. But their dinner family style it's off it's mark. The Pho here is full and hearty with the standard condiments. For apps, go for their Fried Fish Cake, Fresh Summer Rolls, or Crispy Spring rolls. Papaya Salad was good, but hard to eat with just four shrimp chips. Their Banh Xeo batter was way too thick. Their Pho here is very good. the soup had the right amount of flavor and was steaming hot when they brough it out. Their house specials, were a bit lacking. Their "Thit Kho Trung" (Pork and Egg Stew in Clay Pot) and "Ca Kho To" (Carmelized Cat Fish Stew" missed the mark. The This Kho Trung wasn't stewed, and flavorless. Both dish the sauce was too watery and the caramelization. The service was excellent and they do play the traditional Vietnamese new wave music to try and make the ambiance more authentic.
Big Menu, Good Vermicelli, Attentive friendly service. Located on the outer edge of Oakland's Chinatown just a couple of short blocks away from Lake Merritt BART station and the Alameda County Courthouse is Nana Viet Kitchen. Casual, spacious restaurant with inviting wooden tables. I just had a bit of a hunger pang after a tiny breakfast, so after running an errand, I strolled in for a lunch entree after the lunch rush. My order was for a Grilled Pork Vermicelli Bowl. Overall the dish was good, with tons of pan-fried pork, but I wish there was a bit more lettuce, and I kind of prefer pork that is actually grilled instead of just fried, but it met the need. Lots of food for my $16. Loved the service here.. the folks really look after you, and your ice water!! A standout! Getting Here is trivial - there's tons of street parking and by transit, its's a piece of cake with BART or AC Transit within a 2-block radius.. Worth a shot.. .. I'd probably go for the Banh Mi; or a Pho' next time.
This place was fast, affordable, and delicious. We had beef pho and the tofu bahn mi, which were delicious and fresh. Service was efficient and kind! I'd stop in again for sure!
The first visit was on a weekday, so it was quiet and easy to find parking. The food came out quickly, and I ordered the MY THO'S STYLE DRY NOODLE (I swapped the noodles for egg noodles) and the Beef Stew - Bo Kho. The wait wasn't long, and both dishes were very tasty. The second visit was on a much busier day. Parking was quite challenging since it's all street parking, and we had to compete for spots. The restaurant was packed, but the staff did their best to take care of everyone and were attentive despite how busy it was. This time, we ordered two bowls of House Combination Pho - Pho Dat Biet and an appetizer of Summer Spring Rolls, which were delicious. Overall, the food here is really good, and it's definitely one of the better Pho spots I've tried. The restaurant is also quite clean. I would love to come back again, though I'd recommend going on a weekday if you can -- it's much easier for parking and there's less of a wait.
Tried this place for the first time today because I was craving bun rieu, which is one of my favorite Vietnamese dishes. I have had it many times from different restaurants, so I was excited when I saw photos on Yelp that looked really good. The only thing was, the photos were from when the restaurant was still called Mam Hanoi. Since the menu looked the same, I figured they probably kept the same recipes. The restaurant is in downtown Oakland, so I had to find metered parking. I was seated quickly and the service from the waiter was friendly. After ordering, he brought out the plate of herbs for the soup, but it was not what I normally expect with bun rieu. They gave me bean sprouts, jalapeños, Thai basil, and cabbage. Usually the more authentic places serve mint instead of Thai basil, plus shredded lettuce and other herbs. That already had me a little concerned before the soup even came out. When the bun rieu arrived, it definitely did not look like the photos I saw on Yelp. Bun rieu is usually served one of two ways. The "rieu" mixture of egg, pork, and crab can either be made into a meatball style or a custard style. The Yelp photos showed the meatball style, which I prefer because it has more flavor and texture. What I got was the custard style, which was soft and eggy, almost like tofu, and it just broke apart in the broth like egg drop soup. The broth itself was just okay. It did not have a lot of depth or umami. The meats included sliced pork, cha lua (Vietnamese meatloaf), and a lot of tofu. Honestly there was so much tofu that I had to pick some out. Other places I have been to serve a better variety of toppings, like pork ribs, shrimp, and the meatball style rieu, which makes the dish more satisfying. On top of that, my bowl had a chip in it, which was not the best presentation. Overall the service was nice and the restaurant was clean, but I probably would not come back. I used to live in San Jose where there are plenty of amazing Vietnamese spots, so it is hard not to compare. This one just did not feel as authentic as I am used to.
Such friendly service! Store was also very clean and able to accommodate a family of 8 next to us. Lunch time was busy but everyone seemed to have a seat on Friday. I love how they play Vietnamese music instead of just American pop. I've been to Hanoi before and felt the Bun Cha Hanoi dish was similar taste to what I had in Vietnam. I'm not Vietnamese but I felt it was delicious!
The service and atmosphere are welcoming and friendly. Lovely decor and the person who took our order was so kind. Not the typical wham bam service you usually get. I don't mind either but it was a welcomed change of pace. They offer so many dishes that you typically don't see in regular pho restaurants. I was really overjoyed to see Bun Cha, Cha Ca, Bun Rieu, Banh xeo and banh khot all offered here! Like, whaaaat? You're lucky to get 2 of these items along with pho and rice plates, but all of them? Elite chef status here. Cha ca- the turmeric dill grilled fish with shrimp paste dipping sauce tingled my viet spidey sense. It's really rare to see this and I couldn't take my eyes and mind off of it. I think my past memories exceeded my expectations because this didn't meet it. The fish didn't have the nice dill flavor to it although they topped it heavily with it along with crispy garlic. And the shrimp paste dipping sauce was just salty. I didn't love it and won't get it next time. I'm glad I tried it tho. My favorite of it is still in San jose. Bun Cha Hanoi, on the other hand, was the star! Flavorful, generous portions of the pork and pork patty, it was slurping good. The sauce was so good I had to add it to my fish dish. I definitely recommend it to anyone who loves the usual vermicelli dishes. This is a level up. Overall, we are definitely coming back to try their other dishes. The location is great, just near all the other bakeries in the area.

I think it was supposed to be pho, but I asked for egg noodle instead. The service was fast since I was the only one there. The taste of the broth was ok. Pretty standard. The egg noodles weren't that more chewy texture that I like. Overall, the place was ok. Wished I knew why I bookmarked it.
We came here for lunch on NYE, and there was no wait to get seated. We ordered the hu tieu and bun cha Ha Noi platter to share, and both were very savoury and satisfying. I liked the broth the bun cha came with so much that I kept dipping all the veggies in it even after the meat was gone. The flavour was so good that I couldn't get enough. Some of the best bun cha I've had and would definitely recommend!

Located on the edge of Oakland Chinatown, Nana Viet is a nondescript restaurant with a surprisingly delicious, high-quality menu of traditional and regional Vietnamese food. We started with the Shrimp Papaya Salad, a refreshing and juicy mixture of shredded green papaya, carrots, pickled daikon, and mint tossed in fish sauce, garnished with shrimp, fried onions, crushed peanuts, and shrimp chips. We then tried several house special dishes including Bo Ne, a sizzling platter of savory marinated beef, pate, cha lua (Vietnamese pork ham), onions, and two fried eggs, served with a Vietnamese baguette on the side. Every component was so flavorful in its own way, and the runny eggs were perfect for dipping with the light, airy bread. Next, the Canh Chua was a southern Vietnamese soup made with pineapple, tomatoes, tamarind, and okra, topped with catfish steak, fried garlic, and herbs, served with a bowl of broken rice on the side. The broth was rather light and sweet from the pineapple without much sour flavor at all--this is one dish that's probably skippable (unless you really like soups). My favorite dish of all was the Cha Ca La Vong, turmeric-coated catfish fillets grilled with dill, scallions, and onions, and served with fresh herbs, lettuce, and rice noodles on the side. The sizzling fish fillets were super savory and flavorful, contrasting perfectly with the refreshing herbs and the rice noodles. Overall, the food here was absolutely on point, and the service was quick and no frills. Everything came at a good value, and the restaurant setting was clean and modern--what a hidden gem! read more
I'm always on the search for a decent bowl of pho and viet small bites, Nana Viet Kitchen definitely hit the spot! I brought my friend for her to try a new viet spot since she typically only goes to one spot and she absolutely loved it! Our favorite was the Banh Khot which are mini crispy pancakes with shrimp. Crispy on the edges and bottom and not too saturated in oil. I got the combination pho and was pleasantly surprised. The serving of noodles that it came with was almost enough for two people! I was not expecting it at all. They definitely do not joke about their servings. My friend got the Bun Bo Hue, lemongrass beef soup, which was better than other ones I've had in Downtown Oakland but not as lemongrassy as I like. The restaurant itself is fairly sizeable but there were only about 3 fully seated tables. There was only one server at the time and service was a bit slow, but understandable. read more

Mam Hanoi in Oakland is worthy of a visit ~ solid Northern Vietnamese cuisine in casual digs with pricing that won't make you stretch the dollar too thin. I was feeling adventurous at a business lunch when trying and exploring a few different appetizers/shareables with others ~ the whole shrimp egg rolls, Gỏi Gà or chicken salad, Nem Cuon or the grilled pork cake spring rolls, Bò Tái Chanh, or Vietnamese Beef Carpaccio. I've never had any of these dishes before, especially the Carpaccio ~ honestly, I was surprised how much I loved it while also admiring how visually beautiful the dish and plating was. The mix of the raw meat and onion/peanut together in the vibrant complexities of the lemon juice/fish sauce alone..outstanding. The shrimp egg rolls were plump and crispy, loved how fresh the grilled pork cake rolls were with the peanut dipping sauce, and how flavorful the chicken salad was as a light addition. Would def. come back to support this area of Oakland that could use a bit more love, and the lovely and hard working staff. Thank you for the inspiring discovery of new foods for my palate! Wow wow wow! I ordered the pork chop & I have to say I was very impressed 2 pork chops for $16?! And it was marinated very well. Almost a sweet taste. It wasn't too tough or chewy it was just perfect. I enjoyed myself. The service was great the young lady helping us out was friendly, smiling, and recommending things from the menu. The ambiance is quiet it's a small place in china town but they had pretty good seating arrangements. Overall I'll definitely be back to try out more things on the menu. read more
My rice plate only came with one small dry piece of pork chop instead of two. Waiter tried to say that's all I'm given since I ordered the "combo plate" with sugarcane shrimp & egg. I then show him their recent yelp pics of the exact same order with TWO pork chops. He then just laughs and ask if I want another small piece. My sugarcane shrimp was extremely stale and rubbery like it's been reheated multiple times. I was really hoping this place would be better than mam Hanoi, but it was just disappointing . Skimpy portions, long wait times, and mediocre food. +1 star for the service considering the waiter/busboy/cashier did everything by himself. read more
We were planning to have Chinese until we came upon this restaurant and decided to eat here. The place was crowded and we were led to the back room. We ordered the bbq beef and rice (most popular) and the bbq pork chop with rice. The beef was nicely marinated and super tender. My pork chop was alright, tender in the middle but a bit dry on the edges. Overall, it was a good lunch. Waitresses were helpful and courteous. read more
First time coming to this place. I had the Pho Bo dac Biet, which is the house special beef noodle soup, featuring a combo of rare steak, well-done brisket, flank, fatty brisket, and meatballs! The broth is clear and rich, and it really warmed me up on a cold day after work! read more
Apparently this place changed names to Nana Viet Kitchen very recently and now it's another to go spot in Oakland Chinatown. We ordered the Combo Vermicelli Noodles with Shrimp, Pork and Eggrolls and the Pork Chop rice plate. The atmosphere is spacious playing hubby's favorite cha cha music which was uplifting! Food was tasty and service by How was friendly and attentive. No crowd if you come before noon. read more

Came on a Sunday at 5:30pm and there place was empty inside. After we sat, 2 more tables were sat by the time we left. It was quiet inside. I really enjoyed my order! There was vermicelli, fried tofu, pork belly and pork sausage along with a variety of veggies. On the side was a shrimp paste sauce. The combo of flavors was really good. I had a perfect bite for every bite! We also ordered pho (not pictured) and it wasn't bad but nothing special. read more

I eat here almost every week. The restaurant used to be called Mam Ha Noi. Not sure what's with the name change but the decor is kept the same, cute and inviting. Food is still tasty and service is still fast and attentive. Pho broth here is better than the other pho restaurants in the area, and it's my go to order most of the time. I decided to be adventurous and tried their cha ca la vong (grilled turmeric fish with vermicelli), it was delicious and authentic. Street parking or park at the Renaissance structure. read more

Ive visited Mam Hanoi a couple times before and I always order the Bun rieu! The broth is so rich in flavor and it's packed full of ingredients. Mam Hanoi never skimps on the meat, i always find huge meatballs in my soup. The noodles are a perfect consistency. The soup is tangy, garlicky, and perfect in every way. This is definitely my favorite pho place in Oakland. The service is quick, i got my food 10 minutes after I ordered it which is perfect since I have to rush back to work after! There's plenty of seating inside the restaurant and has great lighting. read more

3.5 stars pho tai - the beef was oddly minced or grounded, it was not sliced or shaved like what I'm used to. So the texture tasted like ground beef. Also noting that it came with minced ginger on top of the rare beef. The broth was ok. But the other disappointment was the noodles. It wasn't thin noodles! pho ga - the broth was good but there were a lot of pieces of chicken with the skin on. Could have used more meat. I asked for sriracha and they handed me a bottle with a rooster sriracha but the color obviously did not look like the rooster brand sriracha. So they use some knock off brand and poured it in the bottle. I don't understand why they don't just use what it came in. I would return if I'm in the area and really wanted to try other items on the menu but not go out of my way. read more

Was in the area picking up tea and pastries around the corner at a nearby bakery and noticed their menu in the windows as I walked by. Decided to give it a try as the establishment looked clean and inviting. Ordered the beef rib pho ($17). It came with 1 rib and a few slices of brisket. Pho noodles were cooked just right. Beef rib was amazingly fall off the bone tender. I liked their condiments as well. Besides the hoisin sauce, there was chili sate, pickled chili peppers, and what tasted like a garlic/vinegar spicy red sauce (in lieu of the typical sriracha). read more
Lately I've made it a point to go in person and either pick up food or sit down and dine in. The fees that come with online delivery are not my cup of tea. Mam Hanoi is located in Chinatown across the street from a park. Parking is like this - you either can get it or you don't. As for me, I walked. The first time I came here my boyfriend and I ordered soup. I had a shrimp & lemongrass pho that was delightful. The taste of the lemongrass was fresh and the soup was light and easy on the stomach. The shrimp rolls are delicious as to be expected. Same goes for the egg rolls. My boyfriend ordered the beef noodle soup that has meat balls in it. He enjoyed it, so we came back a little more than a month later yesterday. In the mood for something heavier in preparation for a concert I'd be drinking at, I ordered the salmon and green beans over rice. It was plenty flavorful and the salmon was nice and lightly crispy across the top. The skin was also perfectly crispy on the bottom. I wonder if they used an air fryer to accomplish that texture. Veggies are veggies - you either like them or you don't. I do, but I don't find it needy of a review. The plate was good. My boyfriend ordered the beef noodles again. We also ordered the spring rolls served with peanut sauce on the side. Good and fresh. I love how minty they were and the peanut sauce was really good as well. Think creamy peanut butter, but melted and topped with chopped peanuts. Ambiance - quiet. On both occasions that we went there was plenty of seating. The first time we came there were a few customers, but yesterday we had the place all to ourselves. That said, the service is quick.
