I was in area dropping off things for friend and have been wanting to try this place for a while since I LOVE banh cuon. A lot of places don't make it, and rhis place is solid. GRANTED, I wish there was more wood ear mushrooms in the filling but it was good regardless. Bun Bo Hue was more shrimp paste forward than lemongrass, but it was good. I like that they had the herb that goes with it but I miss that there was no shredded cabbage or bean sprouts. This place is our family favorite and we try to go everytime we're in the area. No frills, but the ladies are nice there. I'd like to give it the four it has on Yelp, but it was underwhelming in some respects and didn't meet my expectations, especially in terms of friendly service. They were cordial - I was greeted and served promptly - but no one checked in on me or asked how the food was. It was very businesslike. Even at checkout, the interaction felt flat. They had a steady stream of customers, and food came out in about 10-15 minutes. I got the chicken pho. The ginger scallion sauce was a first for me and was amazing - I'd go back just for that. Noodles and broth were good, but the shredded chicken was very chewy. At $14.50, the price was fair, but I'd only return because it's cheaper than other spots. Decided to try Wing Wah after I found out my usual Pho Ga spot is temporarily closed. I'm so glad I tried them out! Not sure if it's because of the other Pho Ga spot's closure but, I did have to wait about 15 minutes on a Saturday around 1pm. Not a bad wait at all though, and people come and go pretty quickly so if I came like 20 minutes later, I probably wouldn't have had to wait at all. I love that they have Banh Cuon here. It's one of my favorite Vietnamese dishes. It's really good, soft and fresh here, but a little too much rice paper for me. I'd still get it every time I come though because it's the best I've had in East Bay so far! As for the Pho Ga, the noodles and broth were so delicious. I could drink that broth all day every day - good for the soul. I couldn't finish my huge bowl, but I finished all the soup for lunch the next day. By the way, definitely spend the extra dollar to get the large - it is so worth it! Two meals for $15 is such a steal in today's economy - and for such tasty and healing food too! The only downside was the bone-in chicken was a little on the tougher side. I'd probably try the shredded chicken version next time to see if it's softer. I added chicken gizzards too and surprisingly they were actually so soft! Definitely better than any other Pho Ga gizzards I've had. All in all, I'm glad I got to try Wing Wah and I'll be back for sure, especially since Winter is upon us. The women working there are so sweet and the food comes quick, which I love. Parking is always easy right in front. There's always lots of people coming and going. Hainan chicken rice: there were two types of chicken rice on the menu and I didn't really know what the difference is. The chicken was very flavorful, and tasted like free range chicken that you get in southeast Asia. The rice was also quite tasty but the soup was a bit of a letdown. The ginger scallion sauce they served it with was fire. Every table in the restaurant had at least one plate of this chicken rice or just a plate of chicken so you know it's a must order. I've been coming here for as long as I can remember! My go-to order is a plain vermicelli noodle (about $6-7?) and a whole chicken (runs about $30ish) and you can request for them to debone it for you if the chef is available! They debone the breast & parts of the thigh for you and the remaining is bones that aren't able to be deboned. They will ask if you want skin off as well, but we like to keep the skin on. Tip: if you like spicy, ask for a side of their Thai chili peppers and mix that into your green onion ginger sauce, SO FREAKING GOOD! We also love their banh cuon. They offer a limited amount daily but if you still stop by in the early afternoon, you should still be able to get an order. This is my favorite place to go get pho ga in the entire bay area! Believe it or not, I used to come here every week after a long week from work for over 2 years and it never gets boring for me. It's also a perfect hangover food after a long night of partying. Love this place but try not to come when it's hot (no AC) and during lunch hour. I was lucky to get a 2people table on my own yesterday around 12pm but soon have to finish eating quickly to return the table. This is a chicken pho restaurant but I tend to make it my beef pho spot. IMO, the BBH is quite good here and probably 10% under Pho King (I think the taste has been declined there since they've moved). They use a lot of beef brisket with tendon on them and taste so tender. The beef pho base I suspect is chicken broth focus (well, that's the main business) with some beef pho spices put in. Before I dipped things into hot sauce, I tasted it the beef pho broth slowly yesterday, it's almost like a homey broth from home. It's a little salty but that's all beef pho is about. If you've already tried the chicken pho here, I highly recommend the BBH or any beef pho on the menu. I got the #1 beef pho, regular price at $14, plus $3.5 for more raw beef pieces.
