When the place lives up to the hype, it's truly the best feeling. That's what I felt eating my takeout from Shan Dong. The flavours were bold and strong. The famous sesame paste noodles were deliciously bouncy and al dente, coated with a peanut-adjacent sauce and tender pieces of beef. There is mild spice and some thin veggies. 10/10 The Shan Dong chicken also blew me away, with a hoisin-esque honey garlic sauce covering large chunks of crispy and juicy chicken. Because I got takeout, the chicken was Soft but I can imagine fresh it would be perfectly crunchy. 9/10 I'll definitely be back to try other noodles! Worth going out of your way for
I really love the unique flavor of this chow mein. I tried the handmade noodle and it's really not my personal favorite but it does seem to be a hit I usually just get the manufacturer noodles. I've never dined in so I can't really speak for the service but it's a small place always busy!

Great price for a group gathering! There's a special where you can order 5 dishes for $70. It's a small space, so if it's full sometimes you'll need to join the Yelp waitlist. Service is fast and efficient. My favorite dish was the Shan Dong chicken.
This was probably one of the most disappointing Chinese places I've been to. Their cuisine is more catered to the American palette than 山东菜(shandong northern cuisine). While some on the menu is northern Chinese, it is not uniquely SHAN DONG as the name suggests. Wouldn't come back. The food was also just not good.
I never knew I could cry tears of joy over a bowl of noodles but here I am. It is absolutely dangerous that Shan Dong is near my place in Oakland because I definitely will be a frequent visitor. Arrived at 1:30pm on a Sunday and the place was packed on that rainy day. I knew I was in for a treat when there is a busy spot close to closing time (3pm on Sunday), cozy vibes, and little ladies in the front making noodles. After about a 10 min wait (thank goodness for yelp waitlist), we were seated and greeted to warm barley tea at the table (nice touch). We definitely over ordered which is never the worst idea. It was definitely appreciated later that evening for dinner: Sesame Paste Noodles w/ beef - Ok, so lets get this out of the way, these were the clear winner. Hands down! Delicious and creamy noodles in the best sauce ever! Future me will be sitting in this restaurant, fat as heck, slurping up these noddles, with a big bottle os Tsingtao. Spicy Won Tons - These were the 2nd favorite, Yummy wontons dancing in chili oil. A classic. So good! Sizzling Shrimp w/ Rice - This was definitely the coolest dish out of the bunch. Shrimp and veg in a tasty sauce over a bed of rice crispies -esque rice. The best part was the snap, crackle, and pop of the rice when the shrimp was poured over. I loved how the veggies were sauteed but remained a little crunchy. I love when my veggies aren't completely cooked to death. Scallion Lamb - Like the name suggests, tons of thinly sliced lamb, cooked up with every scallion ever! This was really yummy when we first had it, but this was excellent after a few hours when the flavors married together. We had all of this and some beers! Such a perfect meal for a perfect rainy day.
Shan dong is always solid and as good as the first time I had it! I love taking all guests here!
First time eating here non-DoorDash. Very tasty. Sesame paste noodles 8/10 noodles are fantastic, sauce a touch sweet for my liking. Pork and vegetable dumpling 8/10 definitely thicker dumpling skin, but plenty of filling, juicy and meaty, pause. Spicy bean paste stir fried with fish 10/10 amazing dish, fish cooked perfectly. Green beans and pork stir fry 10/10 very well balanced. Salt and pepper shrimp 8/10 good flavor. Give this place a 4.5, but not low enough to be a 4 so round up to a 5.
Ah...Shan Dong. A Chinatown mainstay that the Hung Family has served the community for over 35 years!!! A slender restaurant that can accommodate a few large table but mostly 4 people or less. They do a lot of take out! The owners and other staff member are very friendly, attentive, and helpful. Special Shan Dong Dumplings (4/5) - a meaty and signature thick dumpling served with a soy, vinegar, spice sauce. Shan Dong Chicken (3.5/5) - lightly battered and golden fried tossed in a honey soy sauce. Not too sweet and a subtle flavor. Sesame Paste Noodles (4/5) - long knife cut noodles in a creamy sesame paste that covered every inch of the noodles. Steamed White Rice - perfectly cooked and was hot and fluffy. I always stop in if I am in the area. Come support your local business.

The restaurant is on the smaller side, and I had heard there can be a wait, but we were seated right away. We had a great experience overall! The service was excellent, the food came out quickly, and everything tasted great. Everyone enjoyed their meal, and we'll definitely be coming back again.

The seating can feel crowded but not too overwhelming. It can get a little loud and definitely has the hole in the wall feel, but is definitely worth the visit. Service was average, but it was packed so it could be expected. The prices are reasonable and the servings were large. Shan Dong chicken - 8/10 - crispy, sweet, and savory. well worth trying Dry braised green beans (with pork) - 8/10 - yum! Sesame noodles - 8/10 - hand made noodles, super tasty Lotus chicken - 6.5/10 - these were ok, and fine on their own, but a disappointment compared to everything else Well worth the visit. The food is definitely better on site than take out. Enjoy the food and experience, dine in, it is worth it.
With a queue curling along the sidewalk in front of Shan Dong within Oakland's Chinatown, I took it as a good omen. My friend and I were not disappointed. Joining their waitlist on Yelp from our hotel room, on a busy Saturday night, our wait was 45-50 minutes. Right on the nose, a table opened up and we were escorted to our table inside, upon which a pot of hot tea and two settings were placed. Service was prompt and our dishes arrived swiftly: their highly lauded hand-pulled sesame noodles (oh my), charred green beans (bright and crispy) and chicken and broccoli. Prices were reasonable and portions were abundant. I wish there was a Shan Dong in my town so I could sample more of their dishes. Fresh, flavorful, and tasty. Highly recommended for locals and visitors alike.
Best spicy wontons I've ever had!! Both the wonton filling and chili oil sauce are incredibly flavorful. We also loved the sesame paste noodles--perfect for if you're craving something carby and hearty. Come early to skip the line.
This place can do no wrong in my eyes--or stomach. I've been coming here since 2018, and the quality hasn't skipped a beat. I usually come with my family, and we order damn near everything on the menu. The aunties serving dishes actually laugh when they see how much food they're dropping off at the table. My favorites are the chili oil wontons, hot and dry noodles, bok choy, and General Tso's chicken. The wontons have just the right amount of heat, the noodles are thicccc and chewy, and every dish somehow manages to disappear before we can even think about leftovers. Honestly, you can't go wrong with anything you order. One of my favorite parts is watching them make the noodles by hand. Half the restaurant is dedicated to the noodle-making station, while the other half is for seating. It's not a huge dining room, but they do offer the Yelp Waitlist, so you can check the live wait before heading over. The vibe is very, get your food and head out so they can keep up with table space for incoming guests. Always a hit, never a miss. read more

Rated one the top Chinese Food Restaurants in California and Not Just the Bay Area. Rating 4 out of 5 based on service, food quality & location. Food was good minus the chicken dumplings probably wouldn't get them again. No Flavor/Seasoning and not my cup of tea and probably might not order that again. My friends and I decided to order delivery from Shan Dong, which is one of my favorite places in Oakland Chinatown. This time, we ordered a few dishes to try - the classic sesame paste noodles, Shan Dong chicken, the fried rice with shrimp, and the hot spicy eggplant. Since we did order delivery on a busy Saturday night, it took a little over an hour for our food to arrive. The food was expertly packed and we were given plenty of utensils and napkins. The sesame paste noodles are one of my favorite dishes here, there's a balance of sweet and salty offered in the creamy sesame paste sauce that's so addicting. I've always been a big fan of the hand-pulled noodles which are thick, bouncy and chewy. The Shan Dong chicken is deep fried and coated in a delicious sauce. It is more of the sweeter side if you're looking for something that's spicy. I appreciate that we were given large pieces as well! The fried rice with shrimp is amazing - I love the crunch of the green onion, the softness of the fried egg, and the texture of the rice and veggies which weren't soggy and still held a nice bite. Last but not least, the hot spicy eggplant was a great choice because it's usually the trickier dish to cook as eggplant can turn really soft and mushy. I was delighted that with the way it was prepared, the large eggplant pieces still held a tender texture that did not fall apart. I also enjoyed the sauce that was paired with the eggplant, which is oyster-sauce based and added a pleasant sweetness as well. Ordered the Sesame Paste Noodles since this seems to be the most popular dish to order. I asked for it to be less spicy and they were able to accommodate. I thought this was a little overhyped. The taste was average but the noodles were a little too thick for my liking. It was a little hard to chew due to how thick it was. However, the portion size is big. If you're expecting an imperial palace with silk lanterns, intricate dark wood carvings, and red & gold furnishings, this isn't the place for you. However, if you're not focused on decor and want to devour a whole lotta noodles, then this works just fine. They're known for their hand-pulled noodles, and Jamie W and I saw two ladies making them the minute we walked through the front door. The dining area looked a bit like an episode of Hoarders, but there was an open table available to us on a Saturday afternoon. Straight off, we ordered the $13.95 Deluxe Combination Chow Mein just so we could add $1 for the Hand Made Noodles (Photo 9). That was one big pile of carbs but tasty and chewy as well with the bits of chicken, pork and beef and even the sauce definitely taking a back seat flavor-wise. I thought we needed to try the $13.95 Special Shan Dong Dumplings (Photo 10). Ten big ones stuffed with minced pork and vegetables. Flawlessly thick skins. Easy to devour but now we were moving into carb overload. To alleviate our guilt, we ordered a third dish which was ironically the one we didn't finish, the $13.50 Mixed Vegetable Deluxe, a stir-fried melange of veggies that were a tad oily for us to fully appreciate (Photo 8). We did, however, love the frosted mugs for our Diet Cokes (Photo 7). The other unexpected surprise was the proactive service we received. It wasn't that we were expecting surly indifference but rather, how the server paid attention to our dining experience from the menu to the takeaway boxes. This is our go to spot for good Asian food with a group! We always try ordering a few new things on the menu to try as it's quite extensive! Our go to is the Shan Dong Chicken and Hand pulled sesame pasted noodles. Service is quick here and order everything at once to ensure everything comes out relatively at the same time. GAS! 100/10 the Shan Dong Chicken and the Sesame Paste noodles are a MUST. The service was great and fast, we came RIGHT before the rush. Our food arrived within 5 minutes of placing our order and we ordered a lot. The 5/6 item deal is the best bet if you're eating with a group. All the food was delicious and fresh. Great local Chinese place with handmade noodles! Weekday evening around 5:30 pm, there was no wait. There ended up being a wait at 7-8 pm, so I'd go earlier if you can! We got salt and pepper squid, sesame noodles (hand pulled is extra $ but worth it), and dumplings and onion pancake. All were solid, and I especially liked the hand pulled noodles. It's a bit thick of a texture! Lots of veggie and fish options for pescatarians too which I really liked. read more

I've heard a lot of Shan Dong over the years, so expectations were about as high as they could possibly be for me. The wait for a walk-in party of 2 on a random Thanksgiving-adjacent weekend was around 10 minutes, which was not bad save for the fact that there's no designated waiting area. Prepare to wait on the streetside for it! Walking in for dinner, Shan Dong was bustling. You're flanked on the left side by a small, open kitchen area where hand pulled noodles are being actively crafted from roll to cut to pull. To the front is a larger than expected dining area with a classic Chinese restaurant feel - simple, functional, with both smaller and larger, lazy Susan-equipped tables, for parties of all sizes. We had the sesame paste noodles with pork, green beans, honey walnut shrimp, and of course some hot tea. The star of the show was definitely the sesame paste noodles - the texture had a great bite to it and the sauce was much sweeter than expected, but still delicious. Green beans and honey walnut shrimp were excellently done as well. There's not much else to say here! Service was fast, efficient, and prices were decently low for our current shrinkflation era. I'd easily expect to pay at least $5 more for each dish elsewhere. I should also mention - we were two hungry dudes, and we left full! We were barely able to finish. read more
We were seated almost immediately even after arriving an hour before closing time, as soon as we sat down we got to order right away. Before we knew it we only waited a short amount of time before receiving our food. I would say this is the best restaurant for enormous portions for family or friend groups. We ordered the Shan Dong chicken which was the winner out of all our dishes, it was well seasoned along with being soft and crispy. We also got the spicy wontons, they are a classic staple how could you not get them? Our last dish we chose was the Sesame hand paste noodles with beef, it was a little too salty for my liking but all the flavors meshed well. Stopped by on weekday evening around 6pm right before the dinner rush. We were seated within 3min upon arrival. There's not much room between tables so it's a tight squeeze but we got lucky with a table in a corner. We ordered the following: Spicy Chicken Chow Mein with the homemade pulled noodles - the noodles were thick! Some thicker than others, which made those a little harder but still solid choice vs the regular noodles. It's wasn't too spicy and I loved that they added zucchini to it. Beef Chow Fun - the sauce and noodle ratio could had been a little better. I kept running into dry noodles without sauce, but the dish was still tasty. Mongolian beef - one of the favorites! Meat was tender and it had the perfect level of spiciness. Dry Braised Green Beans - a solid veggie plate. The leftover of this also reheated very nicely. Onion Pancake - another of the favorites! It wasn't too thick or too thin. It was also cooked to perfection. Pork Dumplings - I was not a fan. The wrapping was too thick for my liking and the filling was too dry. I added chili oil which helped a bit. The service was okay. They were quick and attentive at the beginning, but never came back to check on us after and at the end we felt we were being rushed to leave. This is a great little hole in the wall. We ordered the pork and vegetable dumplings and they were delicious. Then we ordered the beef with Chinese vegetables and the salt and pepper fish. Everything is very tasty. Served fresh and the service is good. read more
We were just exploring the area and came across this place in Chinatown. Wow. The staff were making homemade noodles in the front of the restaurant as you walk in. It was definitley giving Chinatown vibes as for as the restaurant itself. The food was incredible. The Shan Dong chicken was obvi a standout. The scallion pancake entered my top 5 list. It was just the right ratio of doughy vs crisp and it wasn't greasy at all. The noodles were not my favorite, but my boyfriend loved them. We've already ordered take out from them as well since then. Really good. In both cases the leftovers didn't necessarily heat up super well , but that would be my only comment. read more

Great food! Our group of 4 did the 5 dishes for $70 deal + a hand-pulled noodle dish, and we completely finished everything (we were also on the hungrier side). All of the dishes were tasty, but the hand-pulled noodles and the shandong chicken were probably the most unique dishes. The restaurant was packed when we got there around 7:30, but we were still seated fairly quickly. Overall, great value for the taste! read more
There's a reason a small shop in downtown Oakland sees lines queuing an hour to get in. When it comes to authentic, high-quality Chinese food, Shan Dong is the gold standard. With a menu covering all of your classics, what's special about Shan Dong are their fresh, handmade noodles which you can see being pulled in front of you as you wait outside. Dish-wise, any of the noodle dishes are excellent as they're all made using the same hand-pulled noodles. The fish fillet in black bean sauce is a must, as is the green beans and chicken. Personally, I also like getting the hot and sour soup, perfect for a cold evening out. If you're looking for some of the best Chinese food in the East Bay and are willing to wait, then Shan Dong is an absolute must. read more
Came here because of all the Yelp hype. And honestly, the hype is not real. Really authentic with the feels and vibes being in Chinatown. But the flavors just wasn't there. 20/10. So good. So so good. Thank you to all the previous yelpers that rated this place. I was greeted well. Not over the top but I chalked in and grabbed a menu and the nice man just asked me if wanted to order something to go. Short and sweet. I placed my order gave a tip and stepped outside. It was around 8:15 (just before closing) and it was a little chilly so I asked the man if I can sit inside. He said yes and offered me tea got my food walked back to my hotel and I'm in heaven. Shan Dong Prawns is fried prawn with the batter and then we sauté them with garlic in brown gravy sauce and is sweet , sour and spicy.
