My friends and I stopped by on a Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. looking for a table for four and the wait was around 45 minutes. Between the four of us, we shared a variety of dishes, including their Champa Wings, Nam Kaow, Lao Sausages, Yum Nom Tok, Champa's Fried Rice and Pad Thai. Of these dishes, my favorite was easily the Nam Kaow. This dish had so many layers of flavors and textures. I could honestly eat a whole plate of this myself and be satisfied. Every grain of crispy rice was fried to perfection and there was a wonderful sour and spicy tang throughout each bite. The other dish I really enjoyed was the Lao sausages. These sausages are packed with so many different herbs and spices. The lemongrass flavor was especially prominent. Like the Nam Kaow, this dish also went really well with the fresh mint and lettuce that's provided on the table. There's a good reason why this unassuming Thai and Lao neighborhood restaurant has a line out the door: the food is absolutely delicious. We took our food to-go and it was still delicious by the time we got home! I really enjoyed my pad see-ew. It was both savory with a hint of sweet and the flavor was perfectly balanced. The papaya salad laos style is also a standout. It's so flavorful, a little spicy, and comes with noodles! I would definitely order these two dishes again. This is one of my go-to spots for Lao/thai food in Oakland. They are usually really busy so if you can make a reservation, it's best to to ensure you get a table. Either that, or order to go. If you can't, just be prepared to wait a bit, but just know, it'll be worth the wait! The restaurant is a decent size, clean, but the parking is pretty tricky as it's in a residential area. Service is pretty good. Everyone is really friendly and attentive. Again they are usually busy, so be patient with them. The menu has plenty of things to choose from. I usually order the appetizer sampler for the table. This comes with nam kao (crispy rice salad), Lao sausages, their eggrolls, and noodles with a side of fresh lettuce and mint, cilantro to make wraps as well as a dipping sauce. Everything is good but this last time I went, the eggrolls weren't as flavorful as they usually are. May have just had an off day. Another thing I usually order is the kao piak (chicken noodle soup) which is also really good. Comforting for this type of weather too. Honestly, anything I've ordered is usually good. I've had the pleasure of finally dining inside! I went on Valentines for dinner around 7pm there were a maybe 4 people head of us and we waited maybe less than 30minutes at most. They had a lot of menu items and it was so hard to choose. However while waiting to get seated I was reading an article posted in front of the store outside in recognition of there nam kaow. I definitely had to order that! It was really good! But I felt it did need some sort of fish sauce. The pad thai was delicious of course had to get it again & the portions are actually a lot more bigger in person vs online ordering. The house special was delicious, pretty saucy I'm glad the server suggested a side of white rice to soak up the sauce. Every item we ordered tonight actually all came out, and almost every dish was on point. Although it was busy tonight, everything came out quick and service was excellent. We ordered the chicken noodle soup with added ground pork, papaya salad, chicken pad thai, chicken wings, mango sticky rice, and thai tea. We dont usually order the chicken wings as often as other dishes, but every time we do, it's always so crispy and perfectly seasoned! The mango sticky rice is just okay though. We've done takeout a few times and recently went to dine in. All the times we've picked up, it's been pretty empty (or maybe 1-2 tables). However the night we chose to dine in the place was PACKED and there was a wait!! Lucky for us, they offered us bar seating and we avoided the wait! We decided to try their fried calamari and it SHOCKED US how big the app was and how good (and different ) it was!! They tempura battered the calamari AND it came with tempura veggies. My new fav appetizer ( but must be a dine in- I feel it'd get soggy if you got it take out). We also ordered the veggie clay pot - a staple in our order. I love glass noodles and the warm veggies are extremely comforting and remind me of a home cooked meal! The champa sampler had this crispy rice that worked so well with the sausage and I would 100% recommend and eat again. The chicken satay was cooked to perfection & had great flavor with the peanut sauce. We got the mango fried rice and curry were good staples as well- but I think I'd get pineapple next time. I tried the Thai iced tea with coconut milk for something new and have to highlight that service was phenomenal as well. I get my cravings for pad thai once in a while, and decided to check out Champa Garden when I saw they had duck as a protein option! Definitely don't see that often. The pad thai starts at $12.50 if you go for the classic protein options like chicken or beef, which is very affordable for a sit down meal these days. The duck, however, is a $5 add on. Considering how much of an increase it is compared to chicken here, I had much higher expectations. It wasn't abundantly loaded with meat or anything, and a lot of the pieces were more fat than meat. I definitely don't think it was worth $5 for the upgrade. The noodles itself also seemed more on the soft and overcooked side, and a bit too saucy. Wasn't my ideal texture. I also tried the Angel Wings ($13) since it seemed to be one of their popular specialty items. I personally just didn't think stuffed fried chicken is my thing. The outer crisp was great though! I'll probably just stick to classic chicken wings in the future. Khao Piak - 5 - the noodles were chewy and soft. Thick on the starchy side in a good way. Larp - 5 - Fresh appetizer. It pairs well when you wrap it in the provided lettuce with some sticky rice. Been coming here since they opened, and was able to visit on a recent Wednesday for dinner. It wasn't good but we really tried to enjoy it anyway. The dining room had plenty of tables around 530 and was packed by 630. A large swell of noisy activity is always present near the door, consisting of take-out delivery services (which appear to be the main source of revenue). The staff pay almost all attention to take out. We had the Champa sampler, tom kha soup with shrimp, rice, and tea. We asked if they had coconut rice and due to what seemed like a misunderstanding, received a bowl of rice and a coconut with a straw to our table. The service was a major issue all night. Sampler platter was ok, but not amazing. Rice was old and clustered grains were too gelatinous and hard to eat. The small portion of noodles on the platter were also not prepared correctly-- they came out extremely gelled together so unfortunately we couldn't use them to make lettuce wraps. It came with mint but no cilantro or basil as advertised. It used to be a favorite but it needs more attention to detail to make it edible. Tom kha soup was sadly just fine but not well balanced, so it just tasted like a big bowl of sweet warm coconut milk. It lacked the balance of lime and fish oil, so it had really one note of sweet, so honestly it tasted pretty bad. I make this soup at home, and always order it when out. We barely finished one cup and the rest just sat there. Bevs: one hot tea, jasmine, and another item says red or green tea with no description. After asking the server, she said it was red or green tea. I like green tea so I got the green one, but it was actually like an ultra ultra sugary sweet bright green melon candy with a layer of condensed milk. The server did say it was tea but I really doubt it-- it seemed more like a kids drink. I bet a child would love it, but I had to leave it bc, diabetes. Which brings the main summary-- in house dining is very under staffed. We didn't have a dedicated server, and it showed. We had to go find people to help us place an order, get some rice, get a to-go box (we asked three different people over about 40 min). The questions we had were largely unanswered and we felt pretty forgotten the whole time, so when we needed things we just could have them. Definitely poor service. I would not recommend the sampler or the tom kha soup-- would not recommend eating here-- and felt disappointed with our experience. read more

Wow, this blew our minds and was so delicious and more affordable than most other spots in Oakland! So glad they are doing well and successful. Only the sampler made it to the photo before we focused on devouring everything else. The red curry soup with chicken was delicious and a huge portion. I got an eggplant dish with bell peppers and beef. I think some of these dishes could've been spicier but at least there are a lot of sauce options so you can add to it. A lot of people come for their noodle soups, like kasoy, kao piak, etc. The soups are flavorful and rich, super hearty, and served in giant bowls. TBH I think they give you waaaaaayyy more soup to noodle ratio but the flavor is there, so they get a pass. Spice rack on every table, so you can sauce up your food which ever way you want. The appetizer with the sausage and fried onions with a dipping sauce was so delicious and I highly recommend ordering! What I love about the appetizers is that it includes fresh veggies and herbs especially the lettuce wraps. The freshness really cuts the heaviness of the meat. The catfish curry was sweet and savory! The Lao Sausages ended up being all fat/no pork, and the Fried Spring Rolls ended up being filled with 98% glass noodles and a microscopic amount of pork (see uploaded pic). Champa Garden is certainly a place you hear about by word of mouth by Bay Area locals both for how tasty it is and its affordability. Came here on a weekday afternoon for lunch and there was plenty of seating. The menu is pretty large so there's a lot of options to satisfy your palate for whatever Thai or Lao dish you're feeling like. For 2 people we shared a Pad Thai and Duck Curry and it was definitely a bit more than enough food. Both dishes were rich and flavorful--the Duck Curry had a classic flavor to it with pieces of duck and lots of veggies. I actually don't even like Pad Thai usually, but this Pad Thai was great--it wasn't overly sweet like some tend to make it and it had the right amount of tang and balance to it to make you want to keep eating it. Sidebar: I actually really appreciate that the bean sprouts were on the side for the Pad Thai because I'm a little bean-sprout intolerant (yes, I know I need to grow up) but you may want to consider asking about it if you want it incorporated. Service was quick, friendly, and attentive! Parking was doable although for a weekday afternoon there was a good amount of cars in the residential area taking up spots. I have visited this east Oakland Thai restaurant a few times before. It's in a neighborhood surrounded primarily homes except for a liquor store across the corner. Feels very homey. I had ordered the Pad See We with Thai Iced Tea. The food came out in short order.
