I learned of Y's Choice because I was staying overnight at a local hotel and saw an editorial in a magazine at the hotel about the owner and the restaurant. I went for Sunday brunch and sat at the bar. Bella the bartender was very welcoming and made a great mimosa (guava flavored). The chicken and waffles were delicious. The chicken was not overly fried with the middle being tender but not burnt! The waffles were fluffy! Honestly it's been a while since I had chicken and waffles and these were amazing. I'll be back because I want to try the other options in the menu. There wasn't a dj while I was there but the music playing throughout brunch was also appealing.

Very solid soul food restaurant! The wait was short, and all the staff were very kind and helpful. The ambiance had a comfortable family restaurant feel. I'm not from the area, but I'd definitely comeback if I'm in town. We got wings, greens, ox tail, Mac, cat fish, yams, red beans and rice, corn bread, and fried zucchini. Everything was tasty. My favorites were the yams and catfish!

Yummy, yummy in my tummy! I ordered Ox Tails with cabbage and collard greens through Uber Eats (great service; quick prep and delivery) and it arrived hot, fresh, and delicious. The ox tails were tender and flavored well and were served on a bed of rice and gravy which was also seasoned well. I mixed the cabbage and greens together which made the greens yummier due to the seasoning used for the cabbage. There was a promotion which allowed me to also receive free Kool-Aid and it was exactly how I grew up drinking it, shweet! I'll definitely order from here again when traveling in the Oakland area!!!

From beginning to end this was a WIN! Service was great and we didn't have to wait. From the refreshing strawberry lemonade which was just right, to the oxtails that were out of sight! We will be back to support this sister and keep this place alive and that's no jive!

I'll start by saying I did NOT dislike my experience here. The service was good and the food was cool. The only reason I'm rating it a 3 is because the food is not worth what you pay for it. For 6 party wings, 2 sides, and a piece of cornbread it cost me $40. There are up charges for so many things. For example, of the 6 wings I got 3 of them were BBQ Hennessy wings and that cost me an additional $3. In all fairness it may have been explicit on the menu but I missed it and felt the pricing was unreasonable. The highlight was the mimosa tower. That was absolutely worth it!

    Door dash order

Extremely disappointing experience from start to finish. After waiting an hour for our order after ordering on Doordash(which staff rudely confirmed it wasn't their fault but the "tablet"), we got home only to realize an entire additional order was completely missing. We immediately tried calling the restaurant multiple times to resolve the issue, but no one answered and their voicemail box was full, making it impossible to even leave a message. I had to drive all the way back to the restaurant, which was beyond frustrating after already waiting so long. Unfortunately, the experience only got worse. Instead of accountability or even a simple apology, I was met with unprofessionalism, dismissive attitudes, and outright rudeness from staff. Mistakes happen, but customer service and accountability matter. The lack of communication, poor handling of the situation, and disrespectful behavior completely ruined the experience. I would strongly encourage management to address both operational issues and staff professionalism because this was unacceptable. I simple gave the two stars, because the fried rice, chicken wings and fish is actually delicious....

Totally yummy! We were warmly greeted upon arrival (party of 8). Glad we called ahead and didn't surprise them as the place was jumping. Our server was Brooke--so sweet and on point. Everything came out perfect, hot and on time. She was super attentive as well. We ordered several fried fish plates, wings, chicken sandwich and lots of sides. Everything was amazing! We already have plans to come back. Thank you for an amazing lunch!

Solid soul food, with hit or miss sides. Collard greens and green beans were too vinegary for us, and the sauteed cabbage could have used more seasoning and maybe been cooked down a bit more. My husband is from Mississippi and very particular about these things. Unfortunately, you won't find any pork items here, so no pork chops. Our oxtail was well seasoned and tender. Kids meal came with three wings and seasoned fries. The service was good and they were pretty busy around brunch time on a Saturday. We plan to return to try other items.

The food was so tasty. Perfectly seasoned, whomever is cooking, thank you! I can't wait to bring my husband here. Highlights were their greens & fried zucchini for me! Not everyone can make perfectly cooked, perfectly seasoned greens. Theirs were fantastic! Fried zucchini, also not over cooked, perfectly seasoned & their light batter stayed on the zucchini. Also, not most can get those veggies cooked to perfection. We had a couple hiccups. Totally forgiving for me, but worth mentioning. We order appetizers, hesitated ordering lunch, because we wanted apps first. On the third ask from waitress, we explained but ordered lunch & then she brought us our lunch. No apps. Ok. We asked to skip them. Nope, they came half way thru. Oxtail was delicious, perfectly cooked & seasoned. They were not served hot. Temperature was kinda warm. Then when paying tab; our waitress, the restaurant nor the bartender had cash/change. My friend & I had cash. Asked us to pay cc. Things to note: Discount on bill if you pay cash. They do not split checks/bills. Their address is 1825-3 & on the corner of San Pablo & 18th. No hard alcohol. Beer, wine & wine cocktails available. My friend had a wine lemon drop. She said it was good. The restaurant is well decorated, clean & has an all around pleasant atmosphere. I highly recommend this restaurant. Just dont trip on order of food arriving nor the little things. Their food is delicious! Servers are friendly & I appreciated their service.

I will give the overall experience a 7/10.. The servers were also the hostesses. So everything seemed a bit rushed and i could tell they were overwhelmed and probably felt overworked, considering there were only 2 of them (one working the bar as well) i understand. We got the meal with 6 shrimp & 3 pieces of fish, the fish and shrimp were both seasoned really well, and had a nice crunchy coating to them also came with seasoned fries that had a sweet little taste to them, & also the meal came with this really delicious tangishy orange sauce that had a little spice to it. That meal was a 9/10. We got Mac n cheese, black eyed peas, crab cake egg roll, peach lemonade (fresh squeezed), & garlic noddles. The Mac n cheese was okay, i like a more creamy Mac, but it was superrr cheesy! The black eyed peas would say were also a 6/10, they were a bit mushy and not very flavorful. Now the crab cake egg roll was like a 5/10. No flavor really at all besides crab, & i (personally) think it's crazy that the serving options are 1 or 4 lol like?? Having 1 as an option just makes no sense to me. I could see options of either 2 or 4.. The peach lemonade which is fresh squeezed was a 8/10 but be aware it's veryyyyyy sweet! Like if you don't like sweet lemonade you will either have to water it completely down or just not get it. My man who usually orders 2 or 3 drinks didn't finish his because he hates overly sweet lemonade. The garlic noodles were 8/10. Good garlic flavor, buttery and cooked well.

Second visit here and does not disappoint , enjoyable and warm atmosphere, friendly attentive staff and owner lovely Chef Y . The food is absolutely delicious , tender and full of flavor , we had the lamb chops and oxtails, with delicious cocktails. Moderate prices , we will definitely be back .

Y's Choice is exactly the "piece of the heart" Oakland has been missing. Every single dish was a 10/10, from the rich Shrimp & grits, Qxtails & grits to the perfectly seasoned macaroni and cheese, greens and smothered potatoes. Even the French toast and fried fish were absolute standouts. The customer service was truly impeccable. Our bartender/waiter was so attentive, she even brought lemons for the fish before we could even ask. If you want delicious food and thoughtful service, this is the spot, & shout out to the DJ for the flowing vibes! Definitely gave me a taste of the southern H-Town vibes! Highly recommended!!

While watching KQED, a restaurant review for Ys Choice, in Oakland Ca. was being recommended for Soul Food. I was very impressed with the reviews. So a friend and I drove over from San Mateo. Luch time, expected a rush...not even. Two people sitting in the restaurant, we were the next two customers. It's very expensive, seafood jambalaya $40, small portion. Sauce very bland, shrimp three pieces very rubbery, if there was sausage, hard to find if any, little bits. Three pieces of crab ( legs), hanging from bowl, over cook. Oxtail soup expensive small portion served in a small bowl. No taste, needed a lot of season. The greens they served, taste as if they were thrown on grill then placed in broth. Corn bread was dry, Crab egg rolls, ok, diffinitly hand made. No taste, some part very dough. Best part was the sweet chili. Ok, cost $146.00 for two people. But we did have two beers each. Provided a 18 percent tip. Why you asked if the food wasn't great. Our waiter who waited on us was very nice and the best thing about the restaurant. Ys Choice, I would call this " Why's Choice not!

Parking is a bit difficult but we managed to find street parking a block away. Wasn't too crowded and there was plenty of seating inside. You order first and you find a table to sit, and they bring out the food to you. Self serve water is available. The food came out pretty quick! Thoughts: - Lobster roll (classic) was delicious! Generous amount of lobster. Would definitely get this again. Chips weren't too great though. - Fried shrimp basket was nice. Shrimp was crispy and tasty. Fries were also very crispy and flavorful. The sauces go well with the shrimp/fries. Coleslaw isn't the best though. - The crab nachos were surprisingly good. A nice cheese sauce combo with pico/avocado crema and a good amount of crab. - Garlic noodles were fine, nothing standout about them. - Mix and match basket with catfish, cod, and calamari (not pictured): Catfish was solid (would highly recommend, one of the favorites of the meal!), but would pass on the cod and calamari - a bit dry/fishy. Would recommend for a casual spot for seafood and a nice view!

Anyone remember the Jack London Village that they tore down to build this end of the development? Anyways - this is a fast casual type spot, where you order from the counter, place the little number sign on your table and wait for it to be delivered. The menu is your standard seafood joint by the water type, with all the usual suspects represented. Fried fish, shrimp, chowder, seafood pastas--if you've ever been to a seaside seafood joint, chances are good that the menu here is exactly like the one you remember seeing at the countless other places like this one. I noticed right off the bat that their pricing structure was on the high side - with a $17 burger and fries option, with the bulk of the fried seafood options in the $22-25 range. A cheaper choice might be the $16 fish tacos (two of them) but I kind of draw the line at paying $8 for a single taco. Our table ordered a few of the fried options plus a few soda beverages. The food arrived in a reasonable amount of time, and I noticed that the silver metal trays that the food comes on is a bit on the small side, especially considering the prices for each dish. The fried shrimp dish was a big scoop of mega-salty french fries, and 3 average sized deep fried shrimp. Yes - 3 as in 1, 2, 3. That's what - $7+ a shrimp? The two fried fish platters weren't much better portion-wise. My deep fried cod consisted of three modest sized fish-fingers, and not the single luscious chunk of perfectly fried cod I had imagined in my head when ordering. They were fine - but very average and nothing that stood out as life-changing or something to write home about. As mentioned earlier, they must be employing the Little Rascals method where they over salt everything, in hopes that you'll order another beverage to wash down the copious mounts of sodium (I figure about 4+ days worth). The fried catfish platter that rounded out our order was more of the same - thin meager portions of fish on a large bed of mega-salted fries. Small plastic containers of generic pre-made tartar sauce and coleslaw can with each platter. The coleslaw was fine - just very forgettable and perhaps a tad on the flavorless/watery side. All said, was it okay? Yes. Was it anything outstanding that I'd crave and plan my return to have again? No. It is in line with touristy by-the-Sea seafood places that charge an extra couple of bucks because they're "on the water"? Pretty much. You're paying for the view and the 'scene' of sitting on the patio out front to people watch, and not for the food. I kind of hate these places and normally try my best to stay away from them, but every once in awhile, you gotta put on your tourist hat and join the mindless flock. A meager 2 stars outta 5 from me. Instead, I'd stroll around this area on a Sunday when they hold the farmer's market (again - is not what it used to be) and then drive through the tube to Alameda where great dining spots are numerous on Park Street. You can stop at Crab Cove and Crown Beach on the way, for more touristy sightseeing.

A search on this website resulted in Marica having it on their menu. He booked a 7:30 PM reservation for two. We arrived early. What started out as a not too pleasant experience for us was the attitude of the guy who greeted us when we entered the restaurant. Attitude bordered on rudeness (3 star). We somewhat tolerated it, not knowing what to expect next. The restaurant was filled with diners, and the only available seating was not far from the front door. Oh, the chill was in the air, and my not wearing a sweater and/or light jacket to stay warm had me shivering. I had to brave the element (LOL). Since there was no Chilean sea bass on their daily special menu, it took a little longer for my companion and I to peruse the menu, and decide what entrees we were willing to have. Usually I would order an Arnold Palmer as a beverage; however, this time I decided to be adventurous - reisling peach spritz please - to whet my appetite. My date had the Temescal pilsner. Eats: Grilled salmon arange ginger saffron blanc beurre, roasted potatoes and vegetables. Korean short ribs, honey garlic gochujang marinade, mashed potatoes and vegetables. Our meals were on point and bomb-diggity delicious. The arange ginger saffron was perfect with the carrot. It reminded me of glazed carrots. The green beans were fresh and not overcooked. Ooh, the Korean pork ribs were tender and that sauce was sweet and had a subtle kick of spiciness. (Definitely a perfect complement for the pork ribs.) I have to admit the chef knew how to burn. Food tasted so good that figuratively speaking y'all gotta slap the cook and his mama. Ambiance: Comfy and casual. Despite the dining area is small, still it is a great restaurant for dining on a Friday evening. From my perspective and vivid imagination with the indoor lighting, it exuded a romantic atmosphere. Only in my mind I can hear soft jazz in the background. What convinced me to give Marica a 5 star rating? It was none other than Enriqueta, our waitress. She was pleasant, attentive and so accommodating. The chef lost our order ticket; thus, the wait time for our meal took a bit longer than we anticipated. She came to the rescue and comped us with dessert - chocolate souffle with homemade vanilla ice cream. It certainly was a gesture of kindness to have my date and me smiling from ear to ear. Return visit? Yes, mos def...not the rapper for Chilean sea bass. Enriqueta said I can always call to find out what their daily special is.

The Boquerones was also delicious... the oysters were all fresh and can be ordered with horseradish and hot sauce (I think it was Crystal). For mains we ordered the steamed mussels and the grilled shrimp. The mussels were good, though on the smaller side, and the shrimp was delicious, buttery and garlicky. Great combo! To finish I had the Key Lime Pie which was done in a bowl. Great lime flavor and not overly sweet. Overall, a fantastic experience and we will definitely return!

They were running a special with a winery, buy a carafe of wine, get a dozen oysters for a $1 each. I mention it because it was a good deal. Unfortunately for me, no alcohol. I still had the oysters though. They served me 1/2 East Coast and 1/2 West Coast. For once, my beloved Miyagis were the bigger oyster. Delicious! Instead of wine, I had a Shirley Temple. They make a good one. For my main, I had the lobster roll. They do it with mayonnaise and celery. It was good, but I prefer my naked with butter. Wish that was an option. I chose to splurge and get the Cesar salad on the side. It was almost delicate, with finely shredded cheese and light dressing. I wish there was more dressing to stand up to the romaine. Maybe a few more croutons, too. For dessert, I tried the creme brulee. It was nice and creamy with lots of fresh fruit on top. I only ate half. Be aware, the serving size is generous. You and a friend could easily share. The space itself is nice. It's modern and bright with jwarm wood and jaz playing in the background. There is seating at the bar, and a few outdoor tables in addition to the main room. I enjoyed my experience. If I had a criticism, it's that I wished for one or two more mains. They really have what I consider a grazing menu. It's not a bad thing, just something to consider. Only go if you love seafood. They have the obligatory burger, but not much else. I give them a solid 3.5. Recommended.

No one greeted us. Wasn't sure where to go. Went to the register. Waited a minute for someone to come out. Ordered the clam chowder, dozen oysters and fish & chips with a glass of mystery orange wine. Decided to sit outside in the back patio. Table was dirty from previous guest which usually doesn't bother me be ut little things started adding up. Service took a while. Oysters came out first. 20 min. They were fresh and delicious. Just enough to get the palette opened up. $46 though? Way overpriced but was willing to overlook since it is Mother's Day. Next up - clam chowder, 10 min after they took the tray for the oysters. Smallest bowl I ever saw. Flavor was good. Temperature was luke warm. Broth was thin. $10. Not worth it. Last was the fish and chips. 10 min after picking up the chowder bowl. Portion looked good enough to make up for the small clam chowder, except it was under seasoned. Fish texture was a bit dry too. Fries were meh. Between the overall vibe...the overpriced items...the time between dishes...and the lack of flavor, I will continue my search for an oyster spot in this neighborhood.

It was decently busy, a mix of the retiree marina crowd and work lunch groups, but still relaxed enough for us to really sit and catch up without feeling rushed. The vibe is casual upscale. Grown, but not stuffy. The weather absolutely showed off. Blue sky, sun out, overlooking the water...it felt like we timed it perfectly. Not guna lie, I had been stalking the menu all morning before our lunch trying to decide what I wanted. We started with the seafood trio appetizer; calamari, salmon cakes, and lightly breaded shrimp. Perfect size for sharing, crispy without being heavy. And they bring complimentary bread and butter, which I will always say yes to. It had been a week, so obviously I ordered an espresso martini, tequila (of course). I reluctantly said yes to Kahlúa and it leaned a little more "milky" than I prefer, good, just adjusting next time. I ordered the stuffed crab salmon with mashed potatoes and vegetables and it was bomb. Bomb bomb bomb. Great portion size and I left my plate CLEAN. Okayyy. They had cute little Valentine's arrangements on the tables which was a sweet touch without doing too much. Service was great and attentive, we didn't feel rushed, and the whole lunch just reminded me this place deserves more attention in my life. Definitely coming back.

The only downside is it can be hard to share the little nibbles on the menu between 4 people unless you order more than 1. The appetizers are bigger portions are easier to share. Last night was just 2 of us in the dining room, which really heated up in the sunshine of early evening but then mellowed out. The menu had refreshing chartreuse cocktails to celebrate Chartreuse Day, which is apparently a thing (I'm into it). The scallop crudo was delicious but the halibut crudo with strawberry aguachile (!) was the standout. We did fried chicken with biscuits which were nuts, and I would buy jars of the anchovy chili crisp. The buckwheat donuts were a great way to finish the meal. Sweet and not heavy. It's a pricey night out but IMO well worth it.

The staff was very attentive but not in a pushy way. Water refills, plating changes, and other questions were handled very promptly. 5 stars for service. The appetizers were excellent. We had the asparagus salad and the fish crudo. Each had a unique flavor profile that we have not tried before. 5 stars for both. Makes me want to try more from that side of the menu. The mains were a bit of a letdown. The fried chicken was a little dry. We got all the "fixins"and, though they were innovative, it was all very savory. Way too much savory. Even something simple as a honey butter for the biscuits would help cut through that. My wife got the mussels. Good, but again super savory. Partially our fault for getting two very savory dishes but a balanced dish should have a balance of flavor profiles. 3 stars for mains. Overall, a great experience. If I went back, I'd just get all the apps.
