Fried crab

I'm so freaking glad I finally placed an order. It's hard to write this review because I don't know where to start. The menu changes which is exciting. You can place an Order online and set the time you want to pick it up. The portions are super big, unlike any other place, you get your money worths. For the food review. It's all amazing. I don't have many different ways I can type.. fried crab, bomb. Lobster roll, the beeneez.. garlic fries, oh my gosh amazing. And that wasn't it. Also we ordered the lobster tail and that was so dope. It came with some spicy noodles, then thangs hit.. the whole meal was a home run, touchdown, 3 point basket, hat trick. I could go on

One of the menus. It constantly changes.

Jusla Eats is maybe the new pop-up, definitely a catering spot, located in the classic Flora spot that closed last year and then became Palmetto, which also closed. Offering Cajun/southern-influenced cuisine, and a rotating menu, it adds some much needed life into a spot that has been hurt over Covid, but also may hurt some locals as well. I had just dropped off my bike to get fixed on 19th and walking past the closed and being updated Duende, I saw new signs outside what I still thought was Flora until a helpful woman popped out and gave me the run down: the chef, Lala Harrison is making some new Cajun and Southern food, which was evident by the menu. It was interesting as it isn't split between lunch and dinner yet, with Steak Frites and Crab Boil listed on the menu above a fried catfish poboy and a fried chicken sandwich. I had been craving Masabaga, which is still figuring out if they want to be open for lunch or not, and their loss was Jusla's gain. I asked the others in line what they had ordered before and it sounds like we all just showed up. I ended up going with the very affordable and big cornbread and fried chicken sandwich. Now fried chicken is in overabundance in Uptown Oakland. In less than a mile radius you have World Famous Hotboys, Gus's World Famous Chicken, Catered 2 U, Krispy Krunchy Chicken, Popeyes, The Organic Coup, Quick Bite, Aburaya, Hopscotch, Sam's Crispy Chicken, Miss Ollie's, & Brown Sugar Kitchen, and that doesn't include spots that have fried chicken like Bhugay's, Belly, Taiwan Bento, Ike's and even Luka's has a fried chicken sandwich. That's a lot of competition, so you need to stand out. The chicken sandwich was good, but wouldn't say it is the best in the area. But her other items help. A Taco Tuesday night featuring burritos, enchiladas, and southern fusion tacos sounds interesting and I'm going to assume better than Xolo. The crab and garlic noodles look great, the lobster and pineapple fried rice dishes seem to give Trap Kitchen a run for their money (and seriously, what schmuck is ordering a $40 pineapple fried rice bowl?), so I feel they can carve themselves out a niche, but may be ahead of the curve when it comes to Uptown reopening. I can see Jusla innovating and evolving to stay in the area, and will support the changes. Hopefully they are the first of the new area and hopefully drive more support to the other spots in the area too.

I ordered food for my birthday and Chef Lala and her team did a fantastic job and provided such fantastic service. The meal was delicious! The salt and pepper crab and lobster are out of this world. Highly recommended!

This spot is off the hook. Went there for lunch and the food was so good. The Catfish PoBoy was good and the Chicken Sandwich was amazing according to my co-worker. The food is seasoned so well. I can't stop talking about how good my experience was. My workers are all talking about how good their food was. They raved about the Mac n Cheese and Jambalaya. They have a few spots to sit out outside and enjoy the weather.

All items on the menu taste great and are seasoned well. Portion sizes are also very filling and the Lemonade is also a great addition.

Burdell - Burdell reserve caviar & chicken nuggets

Finally I can leave a well deserved review for Burdell!…read more My husband made a reservation for us for a special occasion and my heart was so warmed by the whole experience. Who would've thought you could have such a gourmet experience with good ol' soul food?! From the get go, everything was lovely. Parking was easy to find and we brought our kiddo and the staff made him smile and laugh. It's not easy to take little ones out for fine dining but we've got a great kid and the Burdell staff was amazing. I love the decor; it's like if you could make homey chic? We definitely had to get the chicken and waffles which was of course amazing and my kid devoured it. It wasn't your classic chicken and waffles but like crispy chicken skin bits (my kid's favorite) and I don't know what is in the waffles but they were divine. Not to mention the chicken liver mousse!! Heavenly. I'm allergic to peanuts so instead of the boiled peanuts (which my husband inhaled) I got something else and my apologies I cannot remember what it was but it was refreshing and crisp) Also the cornbread is to die for. I would eat it every day if I could. It went so well with the pork chop and I would come back just for the cornbread. Last but not least I eyed the owner and chef himself apron'd up and working amongst his staff like an undercover boss and I appreciated his humility and grace. If I could give Burdell 10 stars I would!

This restaurant is good for when you want to have a nice evening out, but not sure if I would be able to dine here casually multiple nights a week. The service was great with a chill laid-back vibe to the place. It also has a cozy home, feeling to it because of the pictures on the wall. The interior is minimalist and clean. Also know that the service fee or tip is included in your bill. I don't mind at all because I usually tip that amount at least when I go out anyway, but it should be known. Came here for dinner while on a work trip in the area and was able to get seated at the bar pretty much right away. I ordered the boiled peanuts to start which was soaking in peanut miso. I also ordered the Jadore chicken which comes partly fried and roasted and comes with deviled egg potato salad on the side. I love the boiled peanuts even though my fingers got a little messy lol. The chicken was good and so was the sides. I would love to come back and try more items on the menu, but like I mentioned before, this place isn't exactly cheap so I would probably make a nice night out of it. I came in on a weekday so there was pretty good amount of metered street parking in the area.

Soon as I saw it, I had to order through DoorDash, and it did NOT disappoint. This plate is a whole feast for real. You get 3 party wings, 3 pieces of fish, 2 pork chops, plus green beans and mac & cheese. Everything came hot, fresh, and smelling good as soon as I opened it. The fish was crispy and seasoned right, not greasy at all. The wings were juicy and full of flavor, and them pork chops? Tender, seasoned all the way through, and cooked just right. Now the sides? Just as fire. The green beans had flavor, not bland like some places be doing, and that mac & cheese was creamy, cheesy, and hitting for real. You can tell they put love into this food. Portions is solid too. They not being stingy at all. Definitely worth the money. I'm glad they brought this back because yeah... I'm running this order back again real soon.

Touch of Soul Soul Food Restaurant delivered one of the best comfort‑food experiences we have had in a long time. Every dish tasted like it was made with care, tradition, and a whole lot of love. The catfish was perfectly seasoned with a crispy golden crust and tender, flaky meat inside. The chicken wings were just as impressive --well‑seasoned, juicy, and cooked to perfection. The sides were the real stars, though. The yams were rich and buttery with just the right amount of sweetness. The potato salad was creamy and flavorful without being heavy. The greens had that slow‑cooked, soulful taste you can't fake, and the macaroni and cheese was exactly what mac and cheese should be--cheesy, comforting, and baked just right. And those corn muffins? Soft, warm, and the perfect finishing touch. From start to finish, the meal felt like a true home‑cooked experience. If you're looking for soul food that hits every note--flavor, comfort, and authenticity--Touch of Soul is absolutely worth the visit. The foot is priced just right, especially in today's economy. One last thing, the service was AWESOME!!!!

My experience with this restaurant has been inconsistent, but my most recent catering order was…read moreextremely disappointing. The first time I visited, it was late in the evening and they had already sold out of several items. The food I did try was average at best--about a 2.5/5. The second time, I went with someone who knew the owner, and the experience was completely different. Everything was excellent--easily a 5/5. Based on that visit, I felt confident enough to place a large catering order for a Black History Month event at my job. I ordered yams, dressing with gravy, greens, mac & cheese, fried catfish, fried chicken, cornbread, peach cobbler, and German chocolate cake. The total came to $590, which I paid immediately after confirming via text. I requested that the food be ready by 2 PM since the event started at 3 PM. When I arrived, nothing was ready. There was also confusion about my order--they initially only prepared one dessert, even though I was charged for both cobbler and cake. I had to show proof of my order to resolve that. As the food slowly became available, I was handed trays one at a time with no assistance, meaning I had to carry everything to my car by myself. On top of that, the cornbread I ordered was never provided. The food wasn't fully ready until around 3 PM, which caused delays for my event. Unfortunately, the quality didn't match my previous experience either. The fried catfish pieces were extremely small--more like nuggets than full portions. The dressing was undercooked and even had large turkey bones in it, which was unacceptable. The greens had excessive liquid, which I had to drain before transporting them. Overall, this was a frustrating and disappointing experience. Order accuracy was a 1/5, timeliness and service (including lack of assistance) was a 1/5, and food quality was about a 2.5/5. Based on this experience, I will not be returning. For catering orders or anything from a local soul food restaurant I'd highly recommend Ys Choice.

My favorite was the mac & cheese and brussels sprouts. The meats were so tender! Although, I tried a piece of pork link, for some reason, I didn't like it. It seemed too grainy. The ambience was chill, and they have full bar. Nice and spacious. My only complaint is that I was trying to order & the phone rings & the host took the call. What I learned in customer service in my 20 years +, you attend to the customer in front of you first. Phone calls can wait. When she got off the phone, other workers came over and they started talking about what's next in their schedule. Still, I'm over here, waiting to order the rest of the stuff. That what the unprofessional part of things.. Glad we still came here to try. It still earned a star to come back!

As for…read morethe "service," there really wasn't any--food was brought out on tin cookie sheets with whatever they had left, since they were out of chicken, tri-tip, and most of their meats. The food itself was extremely disappointing. The potato salad was clearly not homemade and very bland. The collard greens were overly salty. The pulled pork was dry and had no flavor. The brisket came as two very thin, tiny slices that looked more like pieces of bread than meat. I also ordered a sausage, and it was soggy with a ground beef-like texture, as if it had been sitting in water. For $18, I expected something that at least resembled sausage. The ordering process was inconvenient--you place your food order at the register, then have to go separately to the bar to order and pay again for drinks. In total, we spent $100 for two meals (each with one meat and two sides), two IPAs, and the sausage. Definitely not worth it. Would I recommend this place? Maybe if you just want to grab a beer and don't plan on having a conversation due to the noise. But for the food--absolutely not. I'm from Texas, and I've never had barbecue this disappointing.

While this visit was in between the lunch and dinner rush, unfortunately I think they are understaffed because at the time we sat down there was only 1 person who was busing tables and taking orders. As a result, it took a while for them to be able to stop by our table and provide water, take our order, etc. There was quite a long wait between sitting down to ordering to actually receiving our food. By the time we had actually received our food, almost an hour had passed. While we were waiting, a few other servers eventually joined, but service was still pretty bare for us and we never received refills on water or plates to eat off of when we received our food. I understand that staffing and a backup in the kitchen are out of the staff's control, but it would've definitely helped for us to know in advance how long to expect to wait to align our expectations and arrange our plans for the day. Would advise giving customers a quick heads up/warning because that on its own would've made a big difference. As for the actual food, we ordered the mac trio with elote mac, chicken pot pie mac, and kogi short rib mac (for an extra fee). The elote mac was the best and most flavorful, the short rib mac was okay but not amazing or worth the extra money, and the chicken pot pie mac was very bland/flavorless and didn't have much chicken in it. The food didn't feel like it warranted the wait time and because of that I would not return.
