House special number 9 with broth on the side. Mix noodles. Extra crispy pork on side.
Hansel F.

This is the place for noodles and soup! I got the house special with the broth on the side , and the waitress recommended trying both noodles. Great decision. Asking for crispy pork on the side is a pro move as well! You can add extra spices as well, the house chili is a must try. I enjoyed the broth at my own pace and the noodles dry was a nice touch. Every bite was loaded and this meal hit the spot. The locals love it and I do as well. I will be back!

I know a lot of people love this place, but I think it's a little bit overrated. I got a wonton soup with duck and the broth was very bland and lacked flavor. Service was a little rude as well but I wouldn't really expect anything more. Hahaha. The place was packed And there was a little bit of a line. I'm willing to come back and try some more stuff on the menu, but based on what I had this place is pretty low on the totem pole of soup choices for me.

if you like new tung kee of the south bay, you'll love thanh ky. no frills, just a solid bowl of comfort soup. I order mine with egg noodles, shrimp, ground pork, bean sprouts, and extra pork skin. it always hits. only downside is the location can be a little sketch with the homeless loitering around but its manageable. service is quick.

This restaurant has been around for 30 yrs.(1994-95) & has been a long time favorite of my brothers. Service is fast, so don't be put off by crowds. Orders: #9 House Special Ho Fun noodle $13 a pho loaded with various meatballs & the broth is flavorful. My brother's go to pho. #13 Beef Satay Ho Fun $14 a nutty spicy pho noodle that had tender slices of beef & great flavor. Sometimes the ratio of satay to broth can be tricky, but Thanh Ky has created a nice balance. A reasonable bowl of pho that satisfies.

Have not been here for several decades. Had an errand to do around the neighborhood and decided to lunch here. Sure brought back memories of younger days as i walked in, the same folks that used to take my order is still here but aged. Same layout same tables and chairs? Exact same staff as it seems- wow such nostalgia. I ordered my usual, egg gravy with shrimp over ho fun. Food came out quickly and it was so good. Just like how it used to be if I remembered correctly.. haha Its been a while but good flavor is good flavor, i thoroughly enjoyed my dish, licked my plate clean :) Great to be back here after so many years, good food great memories. Love it! Thanks!

We visited Thanh Ky Cafe for an early brunch to beat the lunch rush. Since it's similar to another spot we frequent, we were confident the noodles would be good--and they did not disappoint! We ordered the #9 "House Special Ho Fun," which includes pork kidneys. The standout surprise was the addition of fried pork skin, adding a delicious crunch and depth of flavor to the dish. If you're in the area, it's worth stopping by. Just be aware that the surrounding neighborhood can feel a little sketchy--after all, it is Oakland--so take a few extra precautions. Overall, tasty food and a satisfying experience!

#47 House Special Crispy Noodles $15

O boy, Oakland. It has gotten really bad since the late 90's when I took a few classes at Laney College. Thanh Ky is known for hu tieu, chieu chau dry noodles. I opted to go for their #47 House Special Crispy Noodles $15 instead. This was delicious. So good. I asked them to make it a bit drier with less sauce. My personal preference is a more crispy noodles. Too much gravy will ruin this dish. Service was excellent. They speak Cantonese as well as other languages. The kitchen was fast. I was in and out in 30 minutes. This was a great meal. Thank you everyone at Thanh Ky.

Chicken over rice

I can't believe it they always using the fried chicken from the days before (left over) and refried it to serve customers I have been eaten here over fifteen years I can tell how fresh it tasted and look like will never come back again

I've been to Vien Huong and this place is way better. I don't get the hype about Vien Huong. Thanh Ky wins in flavor and price. My go to order is #1 with soup on the side. I get half egg noodles and half ho-fun. The bowl comes with shredded chicken, ground pork, shrimp, beef ball, pork ball, and fish cake. I get it without fish cake though. I also always order extra fried pork skin. The fried pork skin takes the meal to another level. Another thing I like about this place is they use my favorite sriracha. My favorite sriracha is a Thai brand that has a slight tangy sour flavor, which is different from the Huy Fong sriracha.

Delicious!

Simple and delicious! My favorite noodle soup spot for the past 25 years in Oakland.

Chiew Chow Ho fun/egg noodles soup

This restaurant is great for a quick noodles soup fix. Always busy so you know it's good. Restaurant is next to a local park with street parking. Don't expect much service besides taking your order and bringing your food to the table. Pay at the front counter. This is our spot to eat at when we are in Oakland area. We ordered Chiew Chow half Ho Fun and half egg noodles. Price is decent and food is always good.

Satay beef rice noodle soup

Thanh Ky is my favorite Teochew noodle spot in the Bay! No, Vien Huong cannot compare no matter what anyone tells me! I'll admit I am biased - Thanh Ky just has such a nostalgia factor to it. I feel like every Chinese Viet kid growing up in East Oakland has grown up with Thanh Ky. But regardless of all my biases, Thanh Ky truly makes the best Teochew style beef satay noodle soup! I literally cannot find it anywhere else (except Vien Huong, which is not as good). The beefy peanuty soup is soooo rich and sooo yummy with the smooth and soft thick rice noodles. I'm always craving it, and this is def my go to lunch spot with mama. For appetizers, I like the fried fish cake and the crispy fried shrimp roll. 10/10 will always come back.

I came here on a really rainy day and this was the perfect place for warm, hearty soup. My boyfriend and I ordered the beef short rib soup and the garlic pork wraps. The portions were massive! We were basically able to make this 2.5 meals and we're both pretty big eaters. The soup was so flavorful despite being light, and the short ribs had a good chew without being too stringy. The garlic pork wraps were also delicious. I ended up ordering the soup again a few days later when I had a stomachache! I'll definitely be back here sometime in the near future.

That's because it was such a convenient food delivery spot for me during the pandemic that I never bothered. This was my first in-person dining experience here. Instead of pouring contents out of takeout containers, Jamie and I were engaged in a very hands-on preparation of our hotpot order. We went with the $47.99 Medium Pork Bone Casserole which served two hearty appetites (Photo 7). It consisted of a mammoth, meaty pork rib mixed with cabbage, potato, and sesame leaf in a flavorful soybean pork broth. For even more calories, we also requested the $3.99 Ramen Noodles (Photo 5). Add the generous servings of Banchan (Photo 4), and we were assured our gluttony remained intact. We were seated about an hour later, but once we got in, the service was quick and efficient. We ordered a mix of items to share: * Enoki chips - absolutely addicting. Perfectly crispy with a great crunch, and the umami spice on the side took them to another level. * Chicken karaage - tasty overall, but the glaze was poured over everything. I would've preferred it on the side to keep the texture crisp. * Kani hand roll - super fresh and flavorful; didn't even need soy sauce. * Ikura & hotate hand roll - generous portion and very fresh, again no soy needed. * Garlic Knockout ramen - lives up to the name. Rich, deeply garlicky broth that was bold and delicious. * Signature smoked toripaitan ramen - flavorful without being overly heavy (which I prefer). The chashu was tender and the noodles tasted fresh. I was blown away by the food, I haven't had ramen this good in a long time. The restaurant clearly runs efficiently, turning tables quickly despite the wait. I'll definitely be back

With my luck, my car would smell like hello kitty for weeks. Anyhow, I found Mẹ Và Con on yelp, a mother-daughter owned resto that opened in 2024. They serve bánh khọt and have outdoor seating so we headed over. Thankfully, we arrived before the Sunday dinner rush (~5:45 pm) and before the parking lot was filled. Rezzies are accepted (via phone). M E N U Viet Cuisine with some elevated, modern twists (no specific regional specialty). Smaller menu than your typical hole-in-the-wall with 25-30 items including AZN fusion items like shrimp ceviche, kimchi pasta and tom yum pasta. Beer, wine, and soju cocktails available. F O O D * Bò Tái Chanh: Beef Carpaccio w/ Thai basil, fried shallot, house tangerine sauce ($18): https://tinyurl.com/nhcn9kxw - Served at dinner only Fresh, tender slices of beef carpaccio with a sweetness from the tangerine sauce and white onions. I appreciate their twist (tangerine sauce instead of nước chấm) but it was too one note for me...IMO, it needed acid and herbs. Plus, I miss the texture of peanuts. * Bánh Khọt: Viet Mini Pancakes w/ shrimp, coconut milk batter, herbs, pickles ($24): https://tinyurl.com/34nx7sat - Served at dinner only Fav dish of the night, the savory bánh khọt was delicately crispy and slightly custardy in the center with a snappy shrimp drizzled with fragrant scallion oil. It came with romaine, mint, and perilla leaves neatly layered for easy wrapping. The lettuce was a bit soft and soggy tho, and I think they forgot the pickled veggies. Served with a tiny portion of tangy sweet nước chấm. * Bò Lúc Lắc: Shaking Beef w/ soy, garlic, onion, cherry tomato, arugula ($26): https://tinyurl.com/3rkpukct Meltingly tender cubes of filet mignon but light on the seasoning and aromatics so it was bland. Also, was hoping for more smoky wok hei flavor. * Thịt Kho Tàu: Braised Pork Belly w/ hard boiled eggs, rice ($21): https://tinyurl.com/mr2evryw - Includes bowl of rice A traditional dish served during Lunar New Year, it symbolizes prosperity, warmth, and stability. Chunks of pork belly are caramelized in sugar and braised in coconut soda and fish sauce - rich, savory with a good ratio of lean meat to fat (4 pieces). Wish they used more braising liquid when warming up, as some pieces were a bit dry. S E R V I C E Warm, friendly hospitality. Food does take awhile tho...our first dish took about 30 minutes to arrive. A M B I A N C E Casual, no-frills indoor area with about 10-12 tables. Cute covered patio in the parking lot with 5 tables and fairy lights. Overall, Mẹ Và Con is a great place to introduce people that are new to Viet cuisine and/or you're looking for Viet dishes with different twist.

Aaron and Kyle made a positive impact on my dining experience. They were extremely helpful in making recommendations for what I was craving and on what sakes I would like better. I tried the Kamo Nanban and a beef/pork cutlet. The Kamo Nanban was delicious. The noodles were cooked to perfection - neither overcooked nor undercooked. The duck melted in your mouth with every bite. I usually find duck to be more tough, but this was so much more tender. There was also a perfect portion for duck to noodles, so there was enough for each bite and to finish the meal. The beef/pork cutlet was really good too. I wasn't sure what to expect but the flavoring mixed with the sauce that it came with, and the crispiness of the breading made it such an interesting combination and I want 10 more! Definitely give Soba Ichi a try if you're craving a taste of authentic Japanese soba!

Every time I visited over the years, there seems to be an entirely new rotation of staff, yet they all share the same customer service issues. The workers look like they don't want to be there (I get it, it's work), and that disinterest shows a bit more than it should, draining the energy from the room. The food mirrors this inconsistency. We frequently stick to what we consider safe items like the porno fries, spicy fried chicken, and spicy rice cake. However, during our last visit, we decided to try the seafood pancake, the Bulgogi burger, and our usual corn cheese. Somehow, all three dishes were a disappointment. The seafood pancake was dense and doughy, while the Bulgogi burger was a bit of a soggy mess. Even the corn cheese, the coveted item that used to keep us coming back, missed the mark. It was pooling oil that left a greasy mouthfeel. While the ambiance remains nice, the kitchen simply underperforms on too many of its dishes now. With all of the new Korean restaurants and pochas popping up in the area, there are far better options available. Sadly, nostalgia isn't enough to justify coming back when the food and service continue to slip.
