Came here over the weekend to catch up with some friends based upon one of the party's recommendation. Had a reservation for 10 people, which they were very much able to accommodate. However we did request 3 highchairs, and they only apparently have 1 available. Seating is available both inside, as well as outside in a covered area next to their parking lot. We definitely way over-ordered despite the larger headcount. However, the food pacing was really off. We only had a few dishes come out initially, which everyone just picked at while chatting away. And it wasn't until quite a bit into the meal when the dishes started coming fast and hard. And next thing we knew, the table was piled high with food that all seemingly arrived at once. The portions were pretty sizable, and the food quality overall good to acceptable. They have a pretty large menu, so there is no shortage of options to choose from. Parking is available in their private lot, which is a huge plus. read more

We booked a table for mother's day :) parking can be rough since they have a small lot but we luckily got parking. Staff are nice when you ask them for anything - very accommodating. The food was good. My favorite was the sweet and sour pork, mapo tofu, and stir fried vegetables. The duck/goose was good but in my opinion too salty. I remember 20+ years ago, this was the location of a KFC. They do have a back parking lot on Buena Vista which is convenient vs trying to find parking on Webster St. They have ample classics and Chef's specials which is good for a comfort meal fixing. Their Hot and Sour Soup is good, and a great starter to warm up the taste buds. We opted for a couple of classical family style dishes. The Salty Fish steam pork and the Bitter Melon Eggs both great with white rice. Another one of my favorites (and not many place has it) is their XO style Duck Chin (it's the Duck's bottom beak). this is more of a appetite and a delicacy for those with this type of appetite. The Lobster E-Fu Noodles was on sale for $38,99 and this was done just right. Overall this was a good dining experience worth repeating. read more

Our workplace celebrated the August Moon which is for family gatherings. This is what we ordered and everything was delicious and it served more than one meal for us. Portions are generous, it ended up serving 16 meals! You have to pre order the sticky rice chicken, put together like a cake and frosting! Lots of care goes into this one dish. read more

I've lost count of how many times I've checked in here well over 30 at this point. And every time? Nothing but fire pics and plates that hit every time. This spot stays busy for a reason. It's just a few feet from East Ocean, smack in the middle of Bay Area food heaven, where Alameda and Oakland keep the good eats coming. Been coming here since my kids were little, and the waiter still remembers us so you know we've put in the hours. The food? Always solid. Prices? Still reasonable. Service? Locked in. This place has really good quality dim sum. We tried some of our standard favorites but the barbecue pork noodle roll was quite impressive. I had two dishes from here for takeout, roasted duck and the steamed chicken. The duck didn't look right, skin was shriveled and the meat looked dry, like it was reheated. The flavor was very good, but the texture was off. The chicken tasted fine, a bit on the bland side but the ginger scallion sauce helped. I noticed when taking a piece of chicken from the take out container that there were strands of slime, I thought I was just seeing things and continued eating, as I went for another piece it was hard to mistaken the long slimy strands, almost like as if I going for a cheese pull, it was without a doubt rope bacteria. It was too late when I had noticed and I had food poisoning shortly after. read more

In the mood for Chinese comfort food so trekked down to Kitchen of Alameda. They have a parking lot. Walking in it feels like a Chinatown restaurant - lot of loud Canto. Don't hate - I'm Chinese. IFKYK. They have the usual Chinese menu, just what we wanted. Cha Siu Wonton Mein - great flavors and lots of cha siu, just not so much won ton - I think 5. Guess that's because there's also the mein. Still 4*. Beef Chow Fun - OK but lot of bean sprouts. 4*. Sweet and Sour Pork - Good flavor, portion OK. Cha Siu bow - Free! Mention "Uncle Timmy" or was it "Teddy". Keep saying Uncle so-and-so until they give it to you ;-) Prices a little on the high side, Service was just like a Chinatown restaurant. Kitchen of Alameda is at the top of my list as the "go to" Chinese restaurant in Oakland or Alameda. The owner is usually there and the people are personable. They serve dim sum that is prepared fresh and steaming hot! One of the few restaurants that serve large pieces of dim sum with very good ingredients. The taste is absolutely amazing. You can also order regular dishes for lunch and dinner and they do have "lunch specials." Try their sweet and sour pork or chicken or fish....they also use fresh pineapple. I really wanted to like this place, but unfortunately, the food just didn't meet expectations. Most of the dishes were OVERLY OILY and salty--I couldn't even finish any of them. I found myself relying on hot tea just to cut through the heaviness. One dish in particular (a noodle and cabbage dish) was disappointing--we were served way more cabbage than noodles. For a table of five dishes, the total came to over $200, which felt pretty steep for Chinese food, especially considering the quality. But the interior could definitely use an update. The decor is dated, and the mix of three different chair styles just made the space feel cluttered and mismatched. Another thing that stood out (in a bad way): the staff smoke a lot outside. It was constant, and based on the frequency, I'm guessing some of the cooks were among them. It didn't feel very clean or appetizing knowing that. Kitchen of Alameda doesn't give much of an impression, but it does appear get relatively busy from what I saw. My family and I arrived at 11am and was able to snag the last parking spot in the lot and grab a table outdoors without needing to wait. My family shared some the standard dim sum dishes such as Siu Mai and Har Gow along with BBQ pork buns shrimp rice rolls. In general, the dim sum was a tad on the saltier side in my opinion. Overall, it was alright, but not special. We also ordered the Singapore chow mein and beef chow fun. Portion size is generous. The beef chow fun was solid, but the Singapore chow mein was very bland. However, my biggest issue is that it wasn't hot when it came out. It was just lukewarm. Perhaps, it was an off day as it was Father's Day. The waiters looked very busy, so that might have delayed food coming out, which made it cool down. Nonetheless, based on my experience this time, I'd probably opt for one of the other two dim sum restaurants down the street before trying this Kitchen of Alameda again. read more

Our first time back here since before the pandemic and the place was lively and noisy as a Chinese restaurant usually is. Parking can be a hassle as their parking lot in the back was full and we didn't want to park in a dark area so we parked a block away near the Jack in the Box restaurant. We ordered 3 dishes and a soup as hubby wanted to have some Chinese food on his birthday: Westlake beef soup, steamed spareribs, seafood claypot, and filet of fish with Chinese broccoli. The portions were humongous and tasty and the service was attentive and friendly. Westlake beef soup wasn't as I would have expected as it had big pieces of beef instead of small chunks. I especially enjoyed the steamed spareribs which were meaty and tasty as well as the seafood claypot! Hubby mentioned it was his birthday and the server gave us complimentary custard buns as well as their tapioca pudding. We took the leftovers home to enjoy for another day! read more

Was headed to the long-standing Chinese Restaurant next door, but thought I'd give KOA a try. I must say their Chicken Chow Fun was tasty and had wok hei, but, I was very disappointed in the Mongolian Beef. I brought it home (take-out) and it had a very heavy fishy smell. Just to validate, I tried a bit of it and sure enough, it was as if the chef wasted a lot of fish sauce on it, before packing it. I hope this is not the norm. But I would give the chow fun another shot. read more

Since it is a smaller dim sum place everything is made to order and brought right to your table vs. the old way of trays or carts coming to each table. With that said though, the wait time to get your food feels so long! Hubby and I ordered the Radish cake, chicken feet, shrimp and chive dumplings, sticky rice, egg yolk bun, and shrimp dumplings. My favorite dishes are the Radish cake (the second time we came we order 2 orders), sticky rice and the egg yolk buns! The Radish cake is seared on both sides with a tender soft inside and has little bits of Chinese sausage in it. So yummy and you don't have to feel bad because it's made mostly of veggies! The sticky rice is so good to eat right when it comes to your table! The rice is so soft and almost melts in your mouth while it's hot! It has 1 or 2 pieces of bite size Chinese sausages, salted egg, and minced pork in it. The salted egg yolk bun is best at the end especially when hot! The egg yolk inside is runny and good. This restaurant has it in a black sesame bun which I can't taste since the egg yolk overpowers it but it looks super cool! There is a parking lot in the back but is limited. They have both indoor and outdoor seating. We liked the outdoor area better. The inside smells like a lot of cleaning chemicals to me. Definitely try this place out!! read more

I've come here several times with my family usually when I'm visiting I'm up in Bay area trying different places that they recommend. I am also kind of picky about my Chinese restaurant just because I grew up eating it. This is one of the few places that has historically impressed me with their food. No I didn't dine in this time, though I have dined in before and it is a very casual Chinese style restaurant that pretty typical of something you would find in chinatown. The servers has always been very nice and friendly always checking up on us and the food has always been good. This time though, there was a slight delay in picking up the food but otherwise everything seems fine though they seem to have forgotten the utensils and napkins this time. Today we ordered the Singaporean noodles, the beef chow fun, and the braised vegetables with tofu. The beef chow fun is actually pretty good, but I am a little picky regarding it because I had it a lot when I was a little so ... I think it was pretty decent. the Singaporean noodles is one of my absolute favorite dishes and this was very middle road, but I have to say they're barbecue pork in the Singapore noodles was outstanding! It is such an amazing barbecue pork I can't say enough about that. I must say however that my favorite dish was the braised the vegetable with tofu it was surprisingly flavorful it had a lot of vegetables which was very filling and the soft tofu was just a sponge of all these flavors with an amazing texture that I just absolutely love. In the past I have had several other dishes like a clay pot fried rice that was just absolutely amazing. and I think that this place is really good food and I highly recommend coming here and trying their many different dishes. read more

We were meeting at this local restaurant in Alameda per a friend's recommendation. This is cerya hidden gem, when the weather is better there's also outside dining. The food was pretty darn fantastic but a lot of the items ordered was not on the menu, which is the traditional method of ordering in a real authentic Chinese restaurant. You ask the wait staff what they have fresh and what they recommend, not looking at a silly menu and order off that. We started with a special soup which had to be preordered a day in advance, it was a free range chicken which was stuffed inside a pork stomach with peppercorns and herbs, this dish is steamed in it's own clay pot and served with the remaining chicken and pork stomach as s additional dish. This is certainly a chicken soup to remember, it was simple delicious. Then came their popular squab which was cooked in their own special sauce unlike any I have tasted, apparently this is a special dish which only they make and is very very exclusive to their restaurant. Another dish which is very good. Next came the crab in it's own bamboo steamer basket with a sticky rice mixture underneath, talking about good eating, the caviar under the shell was intact and worth fighting for. Next was a green bean with calamari dish, another winner of a dish. Next came their bok choy dish. I've never had a simple dish of bok choy seasoned and stir fried that tasted this unusually good. Next was eel cooked in a clay pot with garlic. I've always had steamed eel but never eel done in a clay pot, I think I much prefer eel prepared in a clay pogg th method, what a difference of flavour. The next dish was a shredded cabbage with dried shrimp over a bed of glass noodles, a variation of what I would normally order. My preferred way of serving this is using barbecued pork(char siu) or roasted pork. Next came the lamb/goat braised in a clay pot. This again was cooked a different way than what I am used to and another winner. A different flavoring but equally as good as the other method I like with tofu skin with onions. They had a dessert of pineapple buns, sesame balls and portuguese egg tarts followed by a mung bean tapioca dessert. What a way to end a fantastic meal. After getting a sample of what they served, I would look forward to coming here again for their outstanding meal! read more

I met up with some old friends in Alameda, and we decided to try a place we haven't been to before. KoA is on Webster & Buena Vista, not far from the tunnel. You would not know by the name, but they serve very good Chinese food. We ordered hainan chicken, roast duck, roast pork, shrimp, beef & turnip in clay pot and ong choi. All the food was very good, esp the duck and pork. The duck had a lot of moist meat, while the pork had crispy skin and juicy meat. Regarding the ambiance, you can sit indoors or outdoors. They have a lot of large round tables for big groups. The service was pretty good. The food came out quickly, and our waitress was attentive. The only downside was she asked us to pay cash, but didn't offer a discount. Most places I have been to when you have a large check offer you a cash discount of 8%. Nonetheless, I would return to KoA the next time I am in the area. The food is tasty, and they have cold beer. read more

I love to see what one does with local fast food institutions like an old Kentucky Fried Chicken and Kitchen of Alameda might be the most ingenious of them all! Located on the corner of Webster Street and Buena Vista Avenue, Kitchen of Alameda has been in operation for over a decade now taking over for a restaurant called Mama's Chicken Noodle, which in turn replaced an old KFC franchise. So omnipresent is this former location of KFC is that their old tile overhanging awning is still present with just the signature logo of the Colonel missing, but one must give the team at Kitchen of Alameda credit as they have seriously rebuilt everything inside from the ground up as they have completely changed up the dining room to give it a homier feel and they've changed up the old cashier area as a place to order takeout, including having roast duck and pig hanging from the counter area, ready to be butchered. So well that they have adapted to the times is that they have converted part of their parking lot into a covered outdoor patio area for dining when they need the tables, complete with heating towers, of which they eventually used on my most recent visit. I have been to Kitchen of Alameda for dinner many times, but this was actually the first time I went with a friend for lunch, which of course meant dim sum was the order of the day. Luckily when we arrived, they weren't too slammed with customers, but by the time we left they were so filled that they had to use most of their outdoor dining area. We did manage to get a seat at a table for four people despite there being only two in our party. The first thing they do is that they ask you what kind of tea that you would like to drink from four options, of which we chose Woo Long. They do charge $1.75 per person for the tea, and they also charge you for hot water as well, which is definitely a sign of the times. The lunch menu at Kitchen of Alameda is broken up into sections for Dim Sum, including steam, fried/ baked, rice noodle roll/ dessert and kitchen; and they have sections of noodles, B.B.Q., and their Lunch Special Rice Plates. Since we were here for lunchtime, my friend really wanted to try some of their signature dishes, and it's a paper menu in which one puts a check mark or "1" next to every item you want to order. So we opted for their Har Gow, Siu Mai, and Beef Meat Balls Steamed section of their menu; their Beef Rice Rolls from their Rice Noodle Roll section of their menu; and their Beef Chow Fun from the Noodles section of the menu. We were surprised when our first dish to be presented to our table was the Beef Chow Fun, as normally the dim sum dishes would come out first. But our main entrée was wok fried and piping hot, but it was a little greasy for my taste and didn't nearly have enough beef, at least as much as we are normally used to. Finally, the dim sum dishes came out one by one, with the highlights being the Beef Rice Rolls and the Har Gow, both of which came out so steaming hot that my friend's mouth was burned upon the first bite of the shrimp dumpling with his zeal to eat those delectable bites was palpable. Although the dim sum tasted nicely steamed, I guarantee you that this was previously frozen small tapas food items and then steamed within an inch of their lives as they did take quite some time to be presented to our table. I do wish service was a little bit better at Kitchen of Alameda because once they started to get busy on the afternoon we went, there was nary a server in site to help take care of our check issue in which we intended to split our bill, but my friend was accidentally charged for our entire bill. I'm going to chalk that up to them being busy and accidents can happen, as our situation was easily remedied. I think dinner time might be the time of day to really enjoy a meal at Kitchen of Alameda, as they are never that busy than they are in the afternoon on a weekday or holiday. But I am still happy to put Kitchen of Alameda as one of my many go-to places for a quality dinner and nice takeout spot, as that Peking Style duck is just waiting to be taken home, and as many of their competitors go by the wayside in Oakland Chinatown, Kitchen of Alameda is still around to make sure that your traditional fix for Cantonese cuisine remains fulfilled. read more

We had dinner here pre-Covid and remember it being a decent restaurant. Was headed to a different restaurant but ended up here because our orginal choice was closed. Our party of 7 ordered 6 dishes and everything was pleasingly displayed and tasted good. Their whole chicken was exceptionally good. Portions were good. Prices were standard. Service was very good too. Tea was free. Bowls of rice were $2 each. Tip was already included in the bill and staff clearly told us when the bill was placed on the table.
