I was getting some groceries in Chinatown on 07/25/2025 when I spotted Hay Yue Restaurant next to my favorite market. I decided to give them a try since I was a bit hungry and had a long day ahead of me. I walked in at around 9:45am and was immediately greeted by the owner. As it turned out, he was the same man I exchanged pleasantries with earlier at the garage. He told me to sit wherever I pleased, and I parked myself at a corner table. The interior was spacious and clean, and there was a large TV on the wall showing some Chinese program. Their breakfast menu featured a wide variety of congee, noodles, sandwiches, etc. I ordered off of it and got the Tomato Beef Stew Rice Noodle Soup. It came with a hot beverage (milk tea). At just $7.50, I thought it was a steal. Food arrived in about 10 minutes. My bowl of rice noodle soup was surprisingly good. The soup had real tomatoes and onions in it and had a nice tangy taste, and the beef stew was very tender. The milk tea was alright. The portion was filling and commensurate with the price. The owner and his staff were friendly. I asked how things were going in terms of crime in Chinatown. They told me the situation has gotten a bit better in the recent months. I was happy to hear that. Overall, I enjoyed my breakfast experience here. The food was good, and the price was simply unheard of in this economy. While we chatted, I learned that Hay Yue and Guangdong BBQ (next door) are operating together. You can order their meats on the Hay Yue menu. I decided to order: - Beef Stew Noodle Soup, $13.98 - Deep Fried Shrimp, $10.98 (Note: $25 Minimum to use credit card) The beef stew noodle soup was good. It could of used a richer broth to go with the generous amount of thin noodles. But it had nice fatty beef chunks with tendon. Also some bok choy. It was good for $13.98. The fried shrimps were fresh and plump. Crispy batter and served up HOT! You get eight (8) in an order. Dipping sauce upon request. (3.5 stars) Singapore Curry Rice Noodles: I haven't had this dish in I don't know how many years. It's one of my favorites. This place is all about Chinese comfort food. The restaurant has a feel of a Mom's and Dad's, don't let that fool you. It can get noisy at times but it's not tremendously bad. I personally didn't mind it. I was greeted with a cup of artichoke soup which was surprisingly good. Then the rice and dishes. Great flavor! The tofu really stands out! The sponginess and mix of salt and sweetness just kept me wanting more! I loved the flavor and seasoning! I definitely loved their customer service, the menu is in Chinese I had to get help from the waiter translating the dishes names to English. I thought that was cool! We came for lunch on Tuesday around 12:45, and most of the tables were occupied by locals. Always a good sign. The space and bright and airy and tables didn't feel crammed together. We snagged the last available booth. They have a large menu of food options, ranging from meat and seafood dishes to rice/noodle dishes. We ordered two dishes to share: Chicken pot rice ($14.98) - this was good, but I felt like there was way too much rice and not enough chicken/veggies Fish fillet in black bean sauce ($16.98) - this dish is one of my go to's at a Cantonese spot and it's beautifully executed here. The fish was tender and flavorful They also gave us complimentary soup. The soup was kinda bland but I appreciated the gesture. Based on the sign outside, I think they have a lunch special where you can get 3 dishes + 1 soup for 40 bucks. I'd love to came back and try that some time. read more

We ordered like 5 plates and waited about 30 minutes before the first dish came out. Ok that's fine, I figured the other dishes would soon follow. Each dish came out about 10-15 minutes in between. My last dish never even came out I had to remind them more than once! "It's coming, it's coming" when the chef hasn't even started on it! While we patiently sit there for another 10 minutes for our RICE TO EAT WITH OUR PROTEIN AND VEGGIES!! Everything has gone cold and we have completely lost our appetite and asked for the food to be packed up. We barely ate so we are still hungry leaving the place. For a few times we have tried their wonton and beef stew fun and noodles variant. The breakfast comes with Hong Kong Milk tea or coffee, hot or iced. If you order 2 breakfast with $3 you can get the pork cheong fun or pay a little bit more for the dim sum black bean sauce chicken feet. Their fun are very high quality, it is the same high quality of chicken pho and their egg noodles is decent quality. We've also tried the curry flavored beef stew. Their milk tea is okay, nothing special. They do charge extra for containers if you order to go, which is typical practice of Chinatown. One thing I do want to mention is their dim sum items are very good. Steamed black bean chicken feet and their shiu mai are very good and tasty. I recently noticed that this place has a grand opening sign so during lunch time I decided to check it out. The interior of the restaurant lacks any decoration and a little boring to look at. The restaurant has typical booth settings that can seat parties of 4 and bigger tables to seat bigger parties. The service is quick and efficient, I didn't have to wait long to order or get my food. I ended up ordering the club sandwich and hong kong milk tea. The sandwich and fries were a bit too cold for my liking so that's my first complaint. Other than that it was also pretty dry, if I didn't have ketchup I don't think I would have been able to finish it. However the sandwich itself was pretty decent. I wouldn't order it again though. The hong kong milk tea however was delicious! This is one of my favorite drinks so I was very happy that this place nailed it. The drink is strong and sweet just like how I like it. Their fried spare ribs / sweet and sour spareribs and green beans with chicken is a good staple as well. The service is fast. That is all you need. Got seated right away with hot green tea ( perfect for the rainy weather), table was set with plates and chopsticks ready to use! Lemon chicken -10/10 crunchy yet so flavorful , they have so much so sauce so you get so much flavor in every bite. I also loved how have serving utensils with every plate. Garlic sauce green beans-8/10 would have loved some more garlic flavor to these but the crunch was there! Mongolian Beef -8/10 The Mongolian Beef was good had lots of flavor and was definitely spicy! But the meat was a little softer than I've experienced but it is definitely a must try! The combo fried rice! 11/10! My absolute favorite! The flavor all the shrimp and beef and veggies and too add I have never had rice with cabbage and that really set it off with a boom of flavor! Ambiance - it seems a bit cleaner than 8th St Cafe. The whole entire dinner you can smell smoke from cigarettes. They even have soil planters right outside for cigarettes. Literally the cooks all go for a smoke when they didn't have to cook right outside and the smoke blows it all back on because it is windy. Hopefully they wash their hands before they cook. Food - they have these set menus for $43 for 3 entrees, but you are only allow to order 1 of those sets. They tell you after, even though it's not on the menu. They tell you to order the regular entree price, but keep in mind the 3 entrees for $43 are very small portion and barely any ingredients. We ordered 3 clay pots and pot is so shallow. The dessert was a taro sago but you can see like white stuff (like expired coconut milk) on the top which my husband said it was a bit sour. Would I recommend it to others.....nope. Hay Yue has been open a while and though I go to the church close by, this is the first time I stopped here for lunch. There were 4 of us and we decided to split 3 dishes. We ordered the curry brisket on rice, the pan fried noodles with tomato beef, and the braised tofu with vegetables. Everything was very tasty and portions were decent. You get a complimentary soup with a rice dish, but they gave us an extra soup. The table next to us had intriguing dishes. They were a group of 8 men and they had a huge pan with fish and all sorts of goodies on top. We asked the waitress what it was and they said the men had brought in the fish and the restaurant cooked it for them. It's not something on the menu. The restaurant was fairly busy on this Sunday afternoon. It helps to speak some Chinese but at least the menu had English on it and you can just point to the item you want. My only complaint was that there were smokers outside the restaurant, and the smell wafted in throughout the restaurant. I'd eat here again to try more of their tasty offerings. read more
