Bun Bo Hue
Donna T.

Coming from Orange County, I've been looking for solid Vietnamese food other than pho in East Bay. I was pleasantly surprised to discover this place not far from where I live! The Bun Bo Hue and Banh Canh are yummy! The portion sizes are generous and pricing is reasonable for what you get. The ladies here are friendly and service is quick. It's lowkey and often quiet when I visit but the restaurant is spacious and well kept. Definitely have become a regular here and would recommend for anyone searching for a variety of Vietnamese dishes! Next time, I'd like to try their banh beo.

I went on a Thursday afternoon and the food exceeded my expectations. One of my favorite Viet dishes is bun bo hue. Da Nang Quan served me with a high quality bowl of deliciousness where the spicy flavor was rich! The broth was perfect with the bones marinated, unlike many other restaurants. Highly recommend if you are looking for an affordable yet satisfying meal.

It was my first time here and I was pleasantly surprised. Solid bun rieu! It's flavorful and they're not stingy with it. I appreciate how fresh the herbs are as well. There's pickled shallots on the table as well but I found them on the sweeter side. Still great though. I must come back to try their BBH!

I ordered this Chao Ga for my dinner and guess what the chicken still can make a clucking/bok bok sounds, very raw

I ordered this Chao Ga around my lunch time to save time to cook later and guess what the chicken still raw enough to can clucking / bok -bok to my face, after 5 minutes cooking again and its still bleeding like a period girl!

SPICY AF!!! One of the most legit bun bo hue in oakland, with the flavor and herbs (provided bean sprouts, cabbage, ram rang, thai basil and mint). Also, legit has a pork knuckle and steamed pork cake instead of sliced pork belly. Comes with beef shank, blood cube and house beef meatballs. Solid fresh spring rolls, the fried ones are good but I have had better filling. Overall, spicy but amazing.

The food and as authentic as it could get, they provide lots of fresh greens. The service was fast and polite.

My favorite Vietnamese restaurant on the East Bay. I'm from San Jose, so I'm using to eating tons of good Vietnamese food. This place is authentic and everything is delicious. This is one of my favorite places to get Bun Rieu besides Pho Dao in San Jose. Da Nang Quan Bun Rieu is packed with flavor and comes with so many types of herbs. Most places that serve Bun Rieu just give you cabbage, mint, and lime. Their Bun Bo Hue is pretty good too. The area is sketchy, so be careful where you park.

3.5 for me, Would come back. Love their pickled shallots on the table. I love that they give rice paper with the banh xeo, cause that's how I enjoy eating it at home. It just holds better than just a lettuce wrap way and less messy. The banh xeo was crispy and came out super hot, had shrimp and pork and a lot of beans sprouts. The com dac biet is good but we got too full to finish it. Next time, I'll probably just order this instead and hold off on the banh xeo. Since both are heavy meals and fulfilling. I had a baby with me so it was hard to eat banh xeo while juggling the infant and giving her food. The pho can use a little more noodles, the meat was soft but not super soft, had a pull to it. Their food is good but on the pricey side, feels really home-y. The older lady handing the food is very sweet. Meter parking outside, There's a Viet cafe in the corner. There's always cop cars driving around or parking in front.

The best Bun Bo Hue in the bay! Don't bother driving to San Jose, this is the spot! $16 for a medium, but the flavors and meat are worth a shot. When they say spicy, they mean SPICY!

There's so much scum in the broth, I felt sick after eating here.

Something was off the moment we walked in. The building was empty from the normal crowd we're greeted with (families in the corner, children, hungover young adults, elder's gossiping, running fresh produce from street into kitchen, etc.), staff is different and even the plants are different. The pricing is a different story and doesn't inform the customers on their *new* pricing model. There was always one person there that spoke english so our order this time was a challenge. The menu is very different and I couldn't find my basic "#21 - Medium" meal. Even after pointing at the menu item I wanted, they came back with another server and she just gave me water, not the drink I wanted (Salty Lemonade). I ordered a noodle soup (pho) and went with a basic no frills option since we were only here to grab a "usual" after a night out previously. The soup was lukewarm, the veggie's that came with didn't have 1/2 the variety or portion from before (back early Feb during cold rainy weather) and the noodles were so soggy they broke apart before I had the chance to attempt to stir the noodles. My broth had gross CHUNKS OF SCUM everywhere, I only ate the noodles and little bit of meat, I didn't bother drinking the broth. After reading more recent reviews, there was a change in ownership but they kept the name and skeleton model of the previous one (tables, chairs where some are replaced with no matching chairs, bowls, etc.). My husband and I were disappointed in the direction this went and can't see ourselves coming back here any longer. Our mechanic tried to warn us that "it's not the same" but we gave it shot thinking maybe the prices went up but it really changed-changed. Name is still the same but it is no where near the same menu or food they used to serve.

Bún Bò Huế

Came here Sunday morning with my sister and ordered Bún Bò Huế, Bún Riêu, and Bánh Bèo. Everything was flavorful and delicious with great service. Love that they had sate sauce and Vietnamese pickled red chili peppers with garlic - my favorite! Will definitely be back to try other dishes.

MI QUANG - $16

WHEN: Tue @11am This place is wonderfully unique. My family is from a central Vietnamese city called Đà Nẵng, and this spot specializes in dishes from that area. It's not another pho shop folks! Vietnam isn't just bowls of pho. There's so much wonderful variety here and it's GOOD. If my family from Đà Nẵng says it's good, it's GOOD. PARKING: if you don't find metered parking right in front, you may find some around the corner for free spots. There was a good amount because we came early around 11am. Around noon it gets busier. Here's what I had: BÁNH BÈO NHÂN TÔM THỊT BA CHĨ (4) - $11 Little Steamed rice cakes with shrimp and pork toppings. Comes in 4 tiny dishes with fish sauce, which isn't enough for a meal. You'll want at least 10, so I suggest splitting this amongst friends so each person can try one. The steamed rice cakes are soft and the toppings were plentiful. It's also toooed with peanuts and pork rhines, and the pork and dry shrimp toppings makes this little treat full of wonderful textures! Give it a try! BÚN BÒ HUẾ - $16 (Medium) Spicy beef and noodle noodle soup with rice vermicelli with all sorts of meat toppings: Pork knuckle, beef shank, Viet sausage slices, Pork blood curd, and all the fresh herbs. I appreciate the waiter asking if pork knuckle and pork blood was okay cuz apparently those items aren't popular. I also appreciate how I was able to adjust the amount of spice level cuz I'm a whimp like that. Overall a solid bowl but its such a huge serving for me (it's only $1 more for a large).Oh and it comes with fermented shrimp past on the side to add as I like and I really like it...it's like adding umami to it. MI QUANG - $16 My entire family ordered this so I think its a popular one. This dish is served with rice noodles that have been "dyed" with turmeric. It includes pork, chicken, and shrimp with little broth but lots of fresh herbs and lettuce. We asked for extra broth because we like our noodles soupy. It was pretty darn good. There's a lot of wonderful things going on in here and you just have to try it for yourself. I've been thinking about this place a lot since I've been here, and I really hope to come back. There's so many wonderful options and the staff are all quite friendly!

Parking is a bit difficult but we managed to find street parking a block away. Wasn't too crowded and there was plenty of seating inside. You order first and you find a table to sit, and they bring out the food to you. Self serve water is available. The food came out pretty quick! Thoughts: - Lobster roll (classic) was delicious! Generous amount of lobster. Would definitely get this again. Chips weren't too great though. - Fried shrimp basket was nice. Shrimp was crispy and tasty. Fries were also very crispy and flavorful. The sauces go well with the shrimp/fries. Coleslaw isn't the best though. - The crab nachos were surprisingly good. A nice cheese sauce combo with pico/avocado crema and a good amount of crab. - Garlic noodles were fine, nothing standout about them. - Mix and match basket with catfish, cod, and calamari (not pictured): Catfish was solid (would highly recommend, one of the favorites of the meal!), but would pass on the cod and calamari - a bit dry/fishy. Would recommend for a casual spot for seafood and a nice view!

Anyone remember the Jack London Village that they tore down to build this end of the development? Anyways - this is a fast casual type spot, where you order from the counter, place the little number sign on your table and wait for it to be delivered. The menu is your standard seafood joint by the water type, with all the usual suspects represented. Fried fish, shrimp, chowder, seafood pastas--if you've ever been to a seaside seafood joint, chances are good that the menu here is exactly like the one you remember seeing at the countless other places like this one. I noticed right off the bat that their pricing structure was on the high side - with a $17 burger and fries option, with the bulk of the fried seafood options in the $22-25 range. A cheaper choice might be the $16 fish tacos (two of them) but I kind of draw the line at paying $8 for a single taco. Our table ordered a few of the fried options plus a few soda beverages. The food arrived in a reasonable amount of time, and I noticed that the silver metal trays that the food comes on is a bit on the small side, especially considering the prices for each dish. The fried shrimp dish was a big scoop of mega-salty french fries, and 3 average sized deep fried shrimp. Yes - 3 as in 1, 2, 3. That's what - $7+ a shrimp? The two fried fish platters weren't much better portion-wise. My deep fried cod consisted of three modest sized fish-fingers, and not the single luscious chunk of perfectly fried cod I had imagined in my head when ordering. They were fine - but very average and nothing that stood out as life-changing or something to write home about. As mentioned earlier, they must be employing the Little Rascals method where they over salt everything, in hopes that you'll order another beverage to wash down the copious mounts of sodium (I figure about 4+ days worth). The fried catfish platter that rounded out our order was more of the same - thin meager portions of fish on a large bed of mega-salted fries. Small plastic containers of generic pre-made tartar sauce and coleslaw can with each platter. The coleslaw was fine - just very forgettable and perhaps a tad on the flavorless/watery side. All said, was it okay? Yes. Was it anything outstanding that I'd crave and plan my return to have again? No. It is in line with touristy by-the-Sea seafood places that charge an extra couple of bucks because they're "on the water"? Pretty much. You're paying for the view and the 'scene' of sitting on the patio out front to people watch, and not for the food. I kind of hate these places and normally try my best to stay away from them, but every once in awhile, you gotta put on your tourist hat and join the mindless flock. A meager 2 stars outta 5 from me. Instead, I'd stroll around this area on a Sunday when they hold the farmer's market (again - is not what it used to be) and then drive through the tube to Alameda where great dining spots are numerous on Park Street. You can stop at Crab Cove and Crown Beach on the way, for more touristy sightseeing.

A search on this website resulted in Marica having it on their menu. He booked a 7:30 PM reservation for two. We arrived early. What started out as a not too pleasant experience for us was the attitude of the guy who greeted us when we entered the restaurant. Attitude bordered on rudeness (3 star). We somewhat tolerated it, not knowing what to expect next. The restaurant was filled with diners, and the only available seating was not far from the front door. Oh, the chill was in the air, and my not wearing a sweater and/or light jacket to stay warm had me shivering. I had to brave the element (LOL). Since there was no Chilean sea bass on their daily special menu, it took a little longer for my companion and I to peruse the menu, and decide what entrees we were willing to have. Usually I would order an Arnold Palmer as a beverage; however, this time I decided to be adventurous - reisling peach spritz please - to whet my appetite. My date had the Temescal pilsner. Eats: Grilled salmon arange ginger saffron blanc beurre, roasted potatoes and vegetables. Korean short ribs, honey garlic gochujang marinade, mashed potatoes and vegetables. Our meals were on point and bomb-diggity delicious. The arange ginger saffron was perfect with the carrot. It reminded me of glazed carrots. The green beans were fresh and not overcooked. Ooh, the Korean pork ribs were tender and that sauce was sweet and had a subtle kick of spiciness. (Definitely a perfect complement for the pork ribs.) I have to admit the chef knew how to burn. Food tasted so good that figuratively speaking y'all gotta slap the cook and his mama. Ambiance: Comfy and casual. Despite the dining area is small, still it is a great restaurant for dining on a Friday evening. From my perspective and vivid imagination with the indoor lighting, it exuded a romantic atmosphere. Only in my mind I can hear soft jazz in the background. What convinced me to give Marica a 5 star rating? It was none other than Enriqueta, our waitress. She was pleasant, attentive and so accommodating. The chef lost our order ticket; thus, the wait time for our meal took a bit longer than we anticipated. She came to the rescue and comped us with dessert - chocolate souffle with homemade vanilla ice cream. It certainly was a gesture of kindness to have my date and me smiling from ear to ear. Return visit? Yes, mos def...not the rapper for Chilean sea bass. Enriqueta said I can always call to find out what their daily special is.

Off night? Not sure. I came when this spot first opened, and I had similar sentiments. My favorite part of the meal was the dessert. The donuts and the hazelnut ice cream with that delicious salty cookie were truly the highlights of the meal. Everything else average. Not bad per se, but just unforgettable and of course... prices were expensive for quantity. The $40 1/2 fried chicken was really well cooked. A crispy thick layer of southern style breading deep fried with juicy chicken. It came with a sauce and we chose a mushroom sauce that I didn't think worked at all with this chicken. We also ordered a $7 (around that) biscuit that was small and fine. The gnocchi was actually well portioned for the price, but ultimately flavorless. And the shrimp and chorizo pizza, which I was excited about, again, lacked any depth or flavor... we asked for something to spice it up and she brought over a $2 side of anchovy chili oil. The smoked fish dip was just a few spoonfulls, which was fine, as I didn't love. The $21 asaparagus salad was the most flavorful with a middle-eastern spiced hummus to throw some flavor on it, it was just a very small plate for the price tag. Overall, this is teetering on a 2 star, imho. The place is really well designed, the outdoor patio so quaint and service was nice. The cocktails were solid, while none screamed out to me so I kept it at 1. Overall, not my cup of chartreuse (a very common ingredient they use in cocktails and even coffee). The space is lovely, but for the price tag, the fare didn't live up to the value.

I still had the oysters though. They served me 1/2 East Coast and 1/2 West Coast. For once, my beloved Miyagis were the bigger oyster. Delicious! Instead of wine, I had a Shirley Temple. They make a good one. For my main, I had the lobster roll. They do it with mayonnaise and celery. It was good, but I prefer my naked with butter. Wish that was an option. I chose to splurge and get the Cesar salad on the side. It was almost delicate, with finely shredded cheese and light dressing. I wish there was more dressing to stand up to the romaine. Maybe a few more croutons, too. For dessert, I tried the creme brulee. It was nice and creamy with lots of fresh fruit on top. I only ate half. Be aware, the serving size is generous. You and a friend could easily share. The space itself is nice. It's modern and bright with jwarm wood and jaz playing in the background. There is seating at the bar, and a few outdoor tables in addition to the main room. I enjoyed my experience. If I had a criticism, it's that I wished for one or two more mains. They really have what I consider a grazing menu. It's not a bad thing, just something to consider. Only go if you love seafood. They have the obligatory burger, but not much else. I give them a solid 3.5. Recommended.

No one greeted us. Wasn't sure where to go. Went to the register. Waited a minute for someone to come out. Ordered the clam chowder, dozen oysters and fish & chips with a glass of mystery orange wine. Decided to sit outside in the back patio. Table was dirty from previous guest which usually doesn't bother me be ut little things started adding up. Service took a while. Oysters came out first. 20 min. They were fresh and delicious. Just enough to get the palette opened up. $46 though? Way overpriced but was willing to overlook since it is Mother's Day. Next up - clam chowder, 10 min after they took the tray for the oysters. Smallest bowl I ever saw. Flavor was good. Temperature was luke warm. Broth was thin. $10. Not worth it. Last was the fish and chips. 10 min after picking up the chowder bowl. Portion looked good enough to make up for the small clam chowder, except it was under seasoned. Fish texture was a bit dry too. Fries were meh. Between the overall vibe...the overpriced items...the time between dishes...and the lack of flavor, I will continue my search for an oyster spot in this neighborhood.
