    Mango with Sticky Rice
    Tiffany S.

Food was really good! Enjoyed khao piak the most. Ask for the spice tray, I enjoy adding a bit of chili to the noodles. The pumpkin tofu curry was just ok. The curry felt more runny than what I usually prefer. Mango sticky rice was good, and the spicy basil was good too. Would recommend trying if you're in the area.

I ordered Khao Piak and Nam Khao for to go on Thursday 3.12 during late lunch. We didn't eat until 4:45pm. The Nam Khao was super tasty and very flavorful. They are the ONLY restaurant I know that would put the all the fixings, noodle and broth in one container. The noodles soaked up all the broth and this is what my mom was left eating the dish which is really disappointing.

A place to go for some hearty Thai food or their Khao Tom (pork broth porridge). The restaurant tends to be on the quiet end since we usually go before lunch hours with two toddlers. Overall the food is generally not spicy compared to other Thai places, so if you want it with a good pick, make sure to let them know accordingly. Yellow curry with chicken was alright. Only thing that needs a little improvement is the potato texture. Potatoes needed a little more time to cook since it was on the hard side.

Tom Yum (Medium Size), Fresh Roll Tofu, Drunken Noodle / Pad Kee Mao

Ordered Pad Kee Mao, Fresh Rolls, and Tom Yum Soup Everything was DELICIOUS! Service is amazing. Their peanut sauce and home made chili oil is 10/10!

    Thai Style Khao Soy

My husband and I came here after trying to go to another Thai spot that ended up being closed today. We were so glad we came here! The food was absolutely delicious!!! We got the Khao Soy noodles ( we got 1 Thai and 1 Lao style) and the Lao style papaya salad. If you like Khao Soy, this place will hit the spot! Their Laos Khao Soy tastes so flavorful, the meat was tender, and packed with some many garnishes! My husband said the Thai style Khao Soy was great too. Maya Thai Laos Cafe will be my new go to!!!

We've been wanting to try this new Thai restaurant, just down the street from our place. The restaurant was empty except for a couple at a table when we walked in. The restaurant had a tv and a counter for take out and pickup. We were greeted by a nice lady and told us to sit anywhere. She came and brought menus and 2 glasses of water. We ordered the fried veggie rolls, pad see ew and shrimp fried rice. The veggie rolls were good, the pad see ew was on the salty side, but good flavors and the shrimp fried rice was pretty average. The shrimp was overcooked and portion is on the smaller side. It was overall just good in general. We'll come back and try other dishes since it's pretty close to home. The service was great and food came out pretty quickly. They also serve breakfast and lunch.

This is my new favorite Thai spot in Alameda! The owner was so sweet and helpful, and the food was delicious and the presentation was so cute!

Yes, we finally made it, 3rd time a charm. Our first two visits in early April of this year, you were closed... Quality/Quantity - Today we ordered the following: Curry Puff Chicken - A hit with both my wife and daughter. My wife would have preferred slightly larger puffs. Chicken Pad See Ew - This was good. Pork Pad Thai - My favorite of all the dishes. Mango with Sticky Rice - Our least favorite of all the dishes. The mango was not ripe enough and the sticky rice was not flavorful enough, not even sweet. It was cool that it was blue. Atmosphere - Small local restaurant. One clean unisex restroom. Indoor seating only. Metered street parking. And of course, today was Tuesday street cleaning from 11am to 1pm so we parked really far for parking, lol. Open 6 days a week on Monday to Thursday from 9am to 4pm and on Friday and Saturday from 9am to 8pm. They are closed Sundays. Service - 5 stars. The owner was very friendly and nice. They currently do not offer delivery. Price - $61 + tip. Owner Comments - Congrats on your success since early this year, we have been trying to visit since April and are glad we finally got a chance to support.

Hidden little Thai & Lao spot by park street. I've been wanting to come by to try out this spot. It's tucked behind CVS but at least it isn't directly on Park street area which tends to be hectic and chaotic on busy times. There is a city parking garage just on the other side of CVS if you can't find parking on the street. We came around 4pm right when they just opened so it was just us. I don't know why I didn't order anything off the happy hour menu but they do have one from 4-6 PM! The food was great. Pad Thai had a more tangy taste but that's how I like it and the noodles were perfectly al dente. Pad se ew was good, no complaints there. We also tried the shrimp tempura and it was nicely plated with what I think is a sweet and sour sauce. The cheese Rangoon was good, a little on the small side but it was shaped really pretty Last but not least the Thai tea was a little too sweet for my taste but some may say it's just right. I did really enjoyed the Thai iced coffee from here. The folks here were really kind and attentive. I plan to come again since I notice they had some pretty sweet lunch specials and I really want to try some Thai breakfast that they offer here!

Best Thai/Lao I've found on island. Depth of flavor is great. Staff and chef are super friendly and really flexible in accommodating food allergies and a gluten free diet requirement. They said curries are always GF, but they were also able to make some of the Lao dishes GF too and those were incredible!

    Chicken Sate

On a lightly rainy night, we stopped in at the Maya Thai Laos Cafe on Santa Clara Ave in Alameda. Having just watched, Song Sung Blue at the Alameda Theatre around the corner, our appetites were whetted for Thai food. The boutique café hosted by Atom and Nuey, his chef godmother, was warm, fragrant and welcoming. Each dish had enhanced flavor and special touches. For example, the standard Mango and Sticky Rice dessert was tinted blue by pea blossom flower, with a mango most sweet and mint-strawberry garnish. Thom Ka Gai, the coconut chicken soup, was uplifted with fresh tomato. The Chicken Satay, beautifully grilled large skewers, had peanut sauce with a hint of tamarind and cucumber pickles with red onion and carrot slivers. My taste buds were singing. Authentic, but new, as I compare all Thai restaurants with memories of teaching music in Chiang Mai. Our New Favorite Thai Place!

    Thai papaya salad

We ordered Thai papaya salad at the medium spicy level. I would have liked more of that fishy taste so I think maybe next time I'll try the Laos papaya salad. I still liked it. I might even try the spiciest level next time. We also got the Pad Kee Mao and I liked the quality of the noodles because sometimes they're all clumpy but their noodle quality was good! We got it with tofu and they were smaller than I expected. The plate is smaller compared to other places I've been to but if you're sharing with others, it is a good amount. It did taste a bit salty to me but I cannot tell if that's because I ate the papaya salad before tasting it (since papaya salad is supposed to be salty). We got the lunch special - chicken yellow curry that comes with rice. It seems small but can fill you up as it comes with that bowl of rice. I liked the flavor. The mango sticky rice was really pretty! You can either get one for yourself or share if there's two of you. The mango is ripe and delicious. The sticky rice is a nice pretty blue color. They cut two slices of strawberries to be heart shape. The waitress is really friendly and responsive if you need anything. Just a heads up - most of the tables are for 2 people. The table looks small but honestly held three dishes of food for us to share and the waitress was pretty attentive in clearing dishes as we finished. If you have a big party, I think you should be fine but you may need to wait if there's people occupying the two bigger tables. Food came quickly so that was great because we were really hungry! There are Thai music videos or clips playing on a TV in the cafe so that was nice to hear and watch. We are definitely coming back!

Date: 6/14/2024 Time: 2:40 PM 65° Sunny I was going to get some lunch from Hang Ten Broiler before heading to my brother's home in Oakland Chinatown. Then I was curious whether or not a restaurant has opened at the old Johnathan's Chicken and BBQ. Maya Thai Lao Cafe is located where the above mentioned used to be. The sandwich board signage sure looked inviting, especially the avocado spinach dip toast and the stir fry eggplant chicken. Illustration of some the menu items and the menu itself were in a window display. Breakfast is served all day. Selections are Lao/Thai breakfast, pancake and omelette. Appetizers consist of fresh spring rolls and curry puffs. Check out the lunch specials. Other lunch items are salad, soup, rice plates, pan fried noodles and fried rice and American lunch (hamburger, cheeseburger, chicken sandwich, grilled cheese and fish & chips. French fries are included.) They also have dessert and beverages. Eats: Pad Grapow Chicken, a rice plate dish of ground chicken with red and green bell peppers, topped with a fried egg (sunny side up) and jasmine rice. I started eating it without the rice. It was delicious and spicy. Adding the rice cut down some of the spiciness. I enjoyed it even more. Service was quick and I didn't wait long. The young lady handling the front counter was pleasant. Hip hop music softly playing on the sound system. The restaurant is small and my guesstimate is the seating capacity is about 15 to 20 people. Future visits: Yes, for breakfast, pad see we and the curry puffs. Who knows? The next visit might be with my sister since she lives in town.

Leftover salad to go. Condiment jars at back right.

I love the food over there and I had the advantage of tasting it homemade so when I go to restaurants here I have a little bit more of an educated pallet. They were not so close that you could hear other diners' conversations. The restaurant appeared clean and modern. Parking can be difficult. It's street-side parking, and we had to drive around a bit to find a spot, but when we did, it was worth the short walk. Customer service was good. We got there right at opening, were seated immediately, and over the course of about an hour, the restaurant began filling up. We weren't always checked on, but that didn't bother me. Now for the food. We ordered nam khao rice, crispy pork belly, papaya salad Lao style, fried wings, sticky rice, and steamed rice. The nam khao rice was our favorite dish. It was incredibly flavorful and seasoned well, and the herbs and lettuce served alongside the rice were both crunchy and refreshing. They complemented the rice very well. I still think about this dish often. 5/5, would recommend. The crispy pork belly was my son's favorite. We also thought it was good, especially the dipping sauce that accompanied the protein. One downside is that it doesn't come with rice, which I find odd because most Asian dishes are traditionally served with rice. This is the main reason why we purchased a side of sticky rice and steamed rice. This is also the second Thai/Laos restaurant I've been to on the West Coast that sells rice separately from an entree. I find that odd. While it was delicious and had a nice crunch, it also left something to be desired. 3.5/5. The papaya salad Lao style ranked second for favorite dish of the day. I haven't had papaya salad in decades, and this took me straight back to Hmong New Year and my childhood. I respect and appreciate that Bhan Mae Vane delivers on authentic flavors unique to Laos food without holding back. It was served with cabbage, noodles, and pork rinds. 5/5, highly recommend. The chicken wings were mainly for my daughters, as they are picky eaters, but from a small bite, I would say they're good. I would skip them if you can help it, though, because there are other dishes worth exploring and trying. My daughters enjoyed them and had no complaints. They were crunchy, flavorful, and cooked well. With that said, because I only had a small bite, it doesn't seem fair to give them a rating. Overall, 4.5/5. I would return and explore their menu. Because the flavors are explosive in the nam khao rice and papaya salad, I'm excited to try more from them.

Every grain of crispy rice was fried to perfection and there was a wonderful sour and spicy tang throughout each bite. The other dish I really enjoyed was the Lao sausages. These sausages are packed with so many different herbs and spices. The lemongrass flavor was especially prominent. Like the Nam Kaow, this dish also went really well with the fresh mint and lettuce that's provided on the table. There's a good reason why this unassuming Thai and Lao neighborhood restaurant has a line out the door: the food is absolutely delicious. Definitely one of my favorite meals I've had in 2026 -- I can't wait to stop by again.

Kinda like a blend of samosa + empanada. + Phad ke Mao - flat noodles with veggies, chili sauce and basil. Optionally add protein. I really loved the interior design. Everything was clean and well put together. The restaurant had a smaller, cozy feeling but still felt spacious enough to sit down and enjoy a meal. Even the cashier area was beautifully designed and added to the overall atmosphere. Customer Service - 5/5 The service was very good. The server was extremely welcoming and friendly -- I believe she might have been the owner. She greeted us with a beautiful smile and created a warm environment that made the whole dining experience even better. Small interactions like that make a restaurant feel more personal and memorable. Food - 5/5 Dish Ordered: Trei Chlaing Chein Kroeung (Pan Fried Catfish) 5/5 My first time trying Cambodian food, and honestly this was an amazing introduction to the cuisine. This was one of the best fish dishes I have ever had. The fish was cooked perfectly -- crispy golden skin on the outside while staying incredibly tender and flavorful on the inside. The sauce was what brought everything together. It was light with the perfect consistency, not too thick and not too heavy. You could taste the lemon coming through, adding the right amount of freshness and kick. There was a little spice, but not the kind that takes over the dish. It created a wonderful balance where every flavor complemented each other. The combination of the fish, sauce, citrus, and seasoning was simple but executed perfectly. Every bite made me want to keep eating. It was honestly delicious. Would I Order Again: 100% Yes. This is easily a dish I would come back for. No surprise this restaurant was previously Michelin recommended -- you can taste the quality and care behind the cooking. Additional Comment: I've always struggled with the idea that eating healthy means sacrificing flavor. A lot of healthier foods like salads can sometimes feel unsatisfying, but this dish reminded me that food can be both healthy and incredibly delicious when done right. I have passed by this restaurant ever since I was young, and it's amazing to see that it's still here after all these years. Seeing a restaurant with food this good not filled with customers honestly feels like a shame. Great food deserves to be discovered, shared, and supported. From the welcoming service, beautiful cultural atmosphere, and unforgettable food, this was an incredible first experience with Cambodian cuisine. I will definitely be back. My family ordered 1 appetizer, 4 entrees, and 2 drinks, all shared, and all 4 of us agreed that EVERY single item was phenomenal. That has absolutely NEVER happened before. At most restaurants, there's always at least one thing that someone doesn't like, and often multiple things that multiple people don't like. Not the case here. The appetizer was the spicy basil wings. Very good to start. But little did I know what was coming my way. The drinks were Thai tea and lychee limeade. The Thai tea was normal. As in good, I liked it. The lychee limeade was amazing, had to order another one. I would like to try the mango next time (there will definitely be a next time). Very sour, which I love. I hate lemonade that's not sour enough. Oh and that too, I usually hate limeade, don't really care for lemonade, and don't drink soda. I usually only drink water, juice, or tea (no coffee, alcohol rarely). So that's saying something. The Laos fried spring roll entree was really good. I always liked fried rolls but something about this tasted better. They were Laotian rolls, so maybe that was part of the difference from the ones you get from Pho restaurants. The duck over rice was amazing. I'm not usually one to pick duck, I don't mind it but I usually don't order it, but this was my mom's choice and it was really good. I like the sauce too. The Panang duck curry was so good. My mom doesn't even like curry and she liked it. And the Chiang Mai soup dish, I've never had anything like it. It was still hot after, I don't know, 20 minutes maybe? At the bottom especially. We all ate this together at the end, while the other dishes were in the order I listed them for myself (mostly, kinda switched around a bit eating family style), and generally the same for everyone else. I tasted a tiny bit of the soup in the beginning and thought it was nothing special, like when my spoon was clean it was the first thing I scooped. Only the soup though, none of the stuff inside. Honestly I didn't read what was in it, some crispy noodle or something. I was not sure if I would like it but my sister said she had it in Thailand and liked it so if I didn't like it she could eat it. That ended up not being a problem. Okay so anyway, we started on the soup at the end. To start, it was pretty good. Somehow, every bite we took tasted better and better, for at least like 5-10 bites maybe. At that point, I was thinking it's the best thing I've ever tasted. (But of course that's probably not actually true, and I'm just falling for the recency bias, kind of like how my favorite song changes all the time.) Never had anything like it. I've been missing out. But wow, I have to come back. And I highly recommend this place. Life changing experience honestly. Like if you asked me right now if I wanted to get Japanese or Korean (my other favorites) food or this, I would go here. I honestly wanted more of every single dish, especially the fried spring rolls, duck over rice, duck curry, and soup. Wait a second... that's all the entrees we ordered! Also the limeade. I need to get that again. But I also want to try other stuff next time so I'm torn. I literally need all 4 of these dishes again so I don't know what to do. I hope these dishes aren't seasonal or otherwise temporary. I noticed the menu had a month and year listed (I think it said April 2026 and it's May 3 2026 today) so I believe they update it frequently. If I lived closer I would come 20 times in a row and try every single thing, but unfortunately I live in San Ramon so it's not like I'm trying to go to Oakland every day. Soon though. My sister lives there, if I were her I would go here every day until I was sick of it, if that could ever be possible. I don't know if I could ever enjoy other food this much again. I was also completely sober so it wasn't like I had munchies or anything (felt I should specify being a young adult who grew up in California). Hmm, that gives me an idea for the future though. Even the pricing is fair (no dishes over $30), and the place is nice. Great service too. The only drawbacks are small tables for parties over 4 people, and it's REALLY loud in the restaurant, but well worth it. If you are sensitive to noise I'd recommend earplugs, earmuffs, earbuds, headphones, or something. The place is also relatively small. I'd recommend making a reservation if you plan to go on a Friday or Saturday night. It got busy, very busy. Well our reservation was at 6 and it wasn't crowded yet, a couple tables open, but by the time our food came out the place was absolutely packed and I think people without reservations had to wait to sit. I'm not sure though, I was too focused on the amazing food to care. Anyway, once again, highly recommend and I will be back.

We got the following : Lao Appetizers Plate - Everything had great texture with the sausage standing out the most to me. Very soft and not too salty. Garlic Pork Spare Ribs - Great flavor, but a little on the dry side. Still tender enough to enjoy. Duck Larb Salad - Bright flavors and everything worked really well together. Recommend adding this to any meal balance out the other fried items. Kao Piak - I find that most places over cook their chickens, but the meats here were cooked perfectly. Broth was a bit salty for me, and I usually like the broth thicker, but still good overall. Mango Sticky Rice - I liked the crispy fried rice bits that added a nice crunch. Mango wasn't quite in season right now, but it was still sweet and soft enough. Overall service was great, and there is a lot of parking in the area. Def recommend checking it out.

The young lady named Laila, who is the cashier, said, "on a busy day" it's normally between 45min-2 hour wait times. With those extensive wait times, people will walk away and patronize other businesses. I counted 15 people who walked away. So Let me know if you guys need help in this area, I specialize in catering and time management. (The most important) The customer service was amazing. The young lady Laila who is the cashier was very sweet and respectful and still kept it professional when I was "in my feelings" about the wait time. So I appreciate you Laila for understanding my feelings and not taking it personal after I was told food would take 45 minutes. Unfortunately, We received our order at 2:05pm. Never in my life have I ever waited this long for food unless I was cooking it. This is why I can't rate it a 5. They did apologize for the long wait time which i appreciate for acknowledging that it did take hella long. The ambiance of the area was nice. It is a food truck and they have a nice area to sit and eat. It is four picnic tables but you have to claim them before others do. If you are with a group, and want to sit and eat, I suggest one person claim a table and the other person(s) orders the food. (What I came here for) The food was amazing which I mentioned to the owner. When I say it is hella good I'm not capping. We ordered Beef sticks with rice but The beef sticks are $3 a piece &The rice is an extra $3, 5 egg rolls but i forgot the prices of each one, and Garlic Shrimp and with garlic noodles. I also had to mention that I was not happy about the 1 hour and 20 minute wait which she apologized again. So Overall my experience was amazing minus the wait time. The food is a but my overall rating is a 4 due to the massive waiting time.

The Burmese Samusas were crisp and golden, perfect with the sweet chili sauce on the side. But the standout for me was the Lotus Root Chips. They were light, crunchy, and came with a creamy dip that kept me reaching for more. Everything was fresh and full of flavor, and you can tell they put real care into each dish. The service was excellent too. Our server was friendly, attentive, and made great recommendations without ever rushing us. It really added to the whole experience. A couple of small things to note. The space is a little cramped, so it can feel tight when it is busy. And the price is on the higher side, so just go in knowing that. Those are the only reasons I am holding back from five stars. Would I come back? Absolutely. Just maybe for a special occasion when I am ready to treat myself. Highly recommend if you want something a little different and packed with flavor.
