I just love this place. I don't know what's taken me so long to leave a review when I am such a frequent flyer. It's such a cozy and comforting ma and pa shop. The food is always consistently delicious. They offer breakfast and lunch options. My personal favorite dishes are their french toast, banana chocolate chip waffles, cornbeef hash, and spam loco moco. They also offer unlimited refills for coffee and multiple creamer options at each table. Their service never disappoints. I 10000% recommend this not so hidden gem.
Never noticed this place and came here for brunch. A bit pricey but fair. I enjoyed my waffle and breakfast sides. Would recommend. They have more to the menu I'd like to try another time. Wait was not too bad for a weekend. The service is efficient and friendly. The ambiance is casual. Didn't really notice this place until now.
Southshore Cafe, Alameda This is a small, feel-good diner! There are a bunch of regular's here and you can tell everyone seems to know everyone here. What we ordered: Pork Chops from the Breakfast section and Joe's Special: Sauteed Ground Beef with Onions and Spinach. Both were delicious with big portions. The coffee's are continually refilled! This place feels very warm and welcoming. The staffs are always checking up to make sure things are doing great! Food was hot and delicious! We had a great experience dining here and would come back again!
Staff and Service: - Staff was quick to clean tables and make sure we got seated right away - Once we ordered, it was a little difficult to get staff attention (all tables were full and they were quite busy) to get water and pay the bill Food and Drinks: - Cheese omelette: standard omelette - Blueberry Pancakes: comes with 2 or 3. I ordered 2 and they were filling (couldn't finish them) - Hashbrowns: on the crispier side (depends on how you like your hashbrowns if you'll like these or not) Miscellaneous: - Plenty of parking available via a parking lot - Make sure to check out the specials board (the table next to us ordered loco moco, and it looked good)
I was in Alameda and craving breakfast, so I searched for a nearby spot and this restaurant came up. I specifically wanted chicken and waffles. Ordering was a little challenging because chicken and waffles aren't offered as a meal on the menu, so I had to order everything à la carte. I ordered the chicken wings, which came as a plate of six. They were fried very well and had great seasoning. Unfortunately, there was a lot of fat under the skin, which made them difficult for me to eat. The waffle, however, was cooked really well--soft and fluffy with crispy edges. It does have a distinctive flavor that's different from traditional waffle batter. If I had to guess, it tastes like baking powder is used. I really enjoyed the seating. I was able to sit in a small corner nook by myself, which I appreciated. The staff was friendly and attentive, and the overall vibe felt like a family-oriented, local neighborhood restaurant.
This place is located on the outskirts of Shoreline Shopping center. You'd miss it if you didn't know it's there. We came on a Sunday around noon. There were probably 6 other people in line when we got here. We were surprised the we only waited less than 10 mins before we got seated. Service was top notch. We ordered and received our food pretty quickly. I ordered the veggie omelette. It was as big portion served over hash browns and a side of toast. Zach ordered the veggie sandwich with a side of fries. Everything was as good as brunch would get. We've been here a couple times now and we love the service and the food. Best brunch place in Alameda in my opinion.
Food was decent. I had the Corn Beef Benedict which I thought was tasty. The place seemed nice. Similar to many hole in the wall diners. The waitress filled my drink consistently which I thought was nice. I would come back if I'm in the area.
It doesn't look like much from the outside, but the parking lot is always full. It is w weekday and there are only a few tables open at 12:30pm. It is a lovely mom-and-pop type business, with a young man greeting and getting you set up. A decent homestyle menu with a few Vietnamese offerings. Get it? I thought of the loco mofo, but threw down with fish and chips. Nothing spectacular, but decent nonetheless. I studied the menu a bit more and already have plans to return.
Oles waffle shop takes away all the shine from this diner feel cafe. It's moms and pops. It's decor-less. It's no frills breakfast spot. It's my kind of breakfast stop when you don't want to deal with all the fancy modern over-priced brunch spots! Food: The waffle - let me tell you how buttery, crispy, and chewy this waffle is, like one of the best I had Hash browns were done right crispy. Eggs were over easy Corned beef hash was good. Service was good too. Looking forward to come back.
It can get crowded and busy so sometimes you may need to wait. The staff are super nice. Definitely love the homey vibes. The blueberry pancake came HOT and delicious. It came with two eggs and two strips of bacon. I got coffee and the staff makes rounds to see if you want a refill. I definitely want to try other things on their menu.

The portion was very generous--I even asked for an extra plate so I could divide it and take the other half home. The café is cozy, the staff were welcoming, and the food came out flavorful and satisfying. It was a perfect stop in between errands, and I'd happily return.
Classic old school diner that gives a nostalgic warm feel. Ive been a customer at this specific diner for years and can proudly vouch for their breakfast menu. Their portion sizes are generous and filling! Hash browns are crispy, pancakes fluffy, and french toast just the perfect amount of sweet. Workers are super accommodating and check in on their tables. Majority of the people here are families and older folks, but that's when you know the food is authentic and homey. It gets pretty busy on weekdays and weekends but I've never had to wait too long for seating.

A very nice lady by the name of Leslie greater us upon sitting down. She's very nice and friendly. The food was phenomenal. My garlic noodles were good and flavorful. My mom's hash brown and English muffins were yum. 1 side order of waffle was $9.95 (wow) Overall, simple/ nice place for breakfast/lunch. Its interior is nice and cozy as well. read more

Solid diner experience! The service and ambiance is warm and feels like you're eating a family friend's house but w/ unlimited coffee refills and yummy eggs benny (I don't have many friends who casually make eggs benny this good ) For the food- eggs benny was delicious and it been on top of the crispy hash browns too was a combo I never knew I needed. The chicken+avocado omelet was solid but I think I can make something like that at home. The side of corned beef hash was a MUST! Loved it for some extra protein. It's not anything special but it always delivers and itches that brunch/diner craving! read more

We been coming here for a very long time. My family and I would often come here on the weekend to have brunch together. Great service. The food here is delicious. It does get quite busy during rush hour but the wait isn't long. I always get the same thing when I come here. Family friendly restaurant. read more

A busy mom and pops restaurant with nice staff. A little bit of a wait to be seated on a Sunday morning. It's an older looking establishment but still very clean. I had real eggs scrambled with quality cheddar cheese. The bacon was thick. Good wheat toast slathered in melted butter. The rice was cooked perfectly. The coffee was ok.... The portion size was good, and the pricing was appropriate. I will definitely be back again! read more

Subpar service and mediocre food. Iced tea was mostly water and a drop of tea. Most would expect this ratio to be the inverse. I ordered the hot turkey sandwich with mashed potato's and gravy (see picture). The gravy was made from beef and not turkey, which I expected. When I informed my server that I don't eat beef, she responded with, "I didn't know that." Which is fair. But then when I asked why you would put beef gravy with a turkey meal her answer was rude and she told me to order something else. My lost appetite, trust and lack of respect had me out of there. I asked to pay and she coldy said no, so I left. I won't be going back to this place and recommend you to stay away unless you feel like getting similar treatment. read more

I wanted to have a nice breakfast at an old style diner. It's been quite a long time and I want to support a local small business. We arrived and waited about 3 minutes for a table, the restaurant was really busy. We ordered an Avocado Burger and fruit and a regular breakfast of a slice of ham, 2 eggs and roasted potatoes. The service was quick and the food was also good. Exactly what I was looking for. read more
Super friendly, family-owned cafe that is worth checking out for breakfast. I was in the hunt for some basic breakfast when we were in the area and I came across Southshore Cafe which was one of the few diners opened on a long-weekend in the afternoon. I ordered the 2 Pancakes which came with 2 eggs, bacon or sausage. I customized it to the following + Soft-Scrambled Eggs: perfect consistency and surprisingly not over cooked. + A side of Bacon + A Sausage Patty (Not a link. It makes a difference) + Chocolate Chip Pancakes: super fluffy pancakes with the perfect amount of chocolate chips. I ate one and gave the other to the hubby. PS: there is no price difference for 1, 2, or 3 pancakes. I enjoyed my breakfast and told hubs we need to come to the area more often as they are the first breakfast spot where I didn't leave food on my plate. Ha! read more

If you find yourself hungry on Alameda's West end and you're having trouble getting a table for breakfast on Park Street, and it's too cold for Jim's on the Course - look no further. To be honest, I scoffed at Southshore Cafe years ago. To be fair, it was adjacent to my childhood dentist. Obviously I was young, stuck in my ways, and this was before mom and I took an unexpected morning drive for breakfast at South Shore where I discovered the corned beef hash Benedict. Food: I think, "simple, down to earth, hometown cafe" sums it up nicely, with all due respect to Southshore Cafe. Leave it to another unsuspecting gem of Alameda's tucked away do-right dives! For me, it's right down the middle. No frills, no complaints about the quality of the endless coffee, or the food. From the fresh side of fruit, to the corn beef hash Benedict hollandaise sauce, or should I say gravy? You already know what I'm having! Just like grandma's decor, there's nothing wildly impressive here other than the prompt table-turning service. My go-to morning satisfaction if I'm feeling cheeky is the corn beef hash Benedict. Easily two meals, one plate if you stop to enjoy it for a second before inhaling and licking the plate. Recently in, the diet called for a simple chili and cheese omelette, or the "Ortega & cheese omelette" ($13.25) w/ a choice of fruit and sourdough bread. Although not pictured in this review, Ortega is fancy for non-spicy, green chili peppers. More sweet than heat. The meal was satisfying, but I am a critic when it comes to my eggs only because a home cook myself knows how quickly eggs go from fluffy, to SpongeBob. My menu suggestion: Nobody asked for it and maybe I've been living in Los Angeles longer than the bay I was born into, but would it kill the "classic breakfast" menu to add a bangin' Breakfast Burrito? Eggs, Ortega chilis, cheese, some veggies and/or potato. It's basically an omelette rolled and wrapped into a hand sandwich to go! Food for thought... Service: Late-morning arrivals and weekends should expect peak attendance and a brief (5-15 min.) wait, but the staff at Southshore Cafe have it down. They're as quick to turn tables as they are to top off your mug with hot coffee. You may not be met with a, "Mornin' sugga, what can I get ya?" but you won't wait long and your table will all be satisfied in no time. Tip accordingly and make room for the next patrons. Ambiance: Someone's welcome to call Queer Eye for a restaurant glow up and a day of pampering for the staff! When I said "simple, down to earth," I didn't mean neglected. Whitney Houston, we have a problem, but I, I will always love you Southshore Cafe. I have yet to stick to a seat, or find a new shade of lipstick on my glass - so there is soap in the kitchen. Like many other classic, "hole in the wall joints" as my dad would call them, it all adds to the charm. Don't be distracted, enjoy experience and your company, or the Alameda Journal. Parking: One of the main attractions for this hidden gem is its location. Off the beaten path, across from a rock covered building, (ye old dentist's office) with plenty of parking in a wide open (shopping center) parking lot. Sure, it doesn't have The City (bay view) Southshore restaurants should be offering their diners vs the hub of eateries IN the shopping center but hey, these businesses gotta keep their doors open too! Once you bill out why not burn some of that Benedict off by taking a stroll through the shopping center. Pass some time in Whales & Friends, or walk along the beach and take in that view. Alameda is without a doubt growing and changing with the times. I'm glad there's still some simple, hometown hidden gems like The Southshore Cafe to keep it grounded. The Corned Beef Hash Benedict is the best breakfast ensemble I've ever had.... There's just something about a perfectly crunchy layer of hash brown with an oozing egg and hollandaise sauce. Wife's western omelette was average. Easy parking but there is usually a wait get your table on weekends. read more
Showed up a little after 9am on a Sunday. I was craving pancakes but wasn't in the mood for a chain like IHOP. There was no line so I was able to be seated immediately. It took a few mins for a server to drop off a menu, but another table had arrived just before me so no big deal. My pancakes came out STEAMING hot, which was fantastic. I just ordered two and they, as you can see, were large. Quite tasty as well. The bacon was fine- not fresh off the griddle but also didn't seem like it had been sitting for hours. It's a mom-and-pop vibe. Noisy with conversations but not distractingly so. Lots of families with kids this early. Some older pairs. Very comfortable. Overall a good first experience! read more
My boyfriend and I wanted brunch food, so we decided to come here. Plenty of parking outside. This place is simple, nothing over the top, but in the best way possible. It has very home-y vibes. It was pretty crowded when we got here, but we were able to be seated immediately. We ordered the corned beef hash benedict and french toast. Food was delicious. Price is very affordable, and portions are big. I ate the corned beef hash benedict leftovers the next day, and it still tasted good. I recommend coming here for brunch! read more
