I was in Alameda and craving breakfast, so I searched for a nearby spot and this restaurant came up. I specifically wanted chicken and waffles. Ordering was a little challenging because chicken and waffles aren't offered as a meal on the menu, so I had to order everything à la carte. I ordered the chicken wings, which came as a plate of six. They were fried very well and had great seasoning. Unfortunately, there was a lot of fat under the skin, which made them difficult for me to eat. The waffle, however, was cooked really well--soft and fluffy with crispy edges. It does have a distinctive flavor that's different from traditional waffle batter. If I had to guess, it tastes like baking powder is used. I really enjoyed the seating. I was able to sit in a small corner nook by myself, which I appreciated. This place is located on the outskirts of Shoreline Shopping center. You'd miss it if you didn't know it's there. We came on a Sunday around noon. There were probably 6 other people in line when we got here. We were surprised the we only waited less than 10 mins before we got seated. Service was top notch. We ordered and received our food pretty quickly. I ordered the veggie omelette. It was as big portion served over hash browns and a side of toast. Zach ordered the veggie sandwich with a side of fries. Everything was as good as brunch would get. We've been here a couple times now and we love the service and the food. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but the parking lot is always full. It is w weekday and there are only a few tables open at 12:30pm. It is a lovely mom-and-pop type business, with a young man greeting and getting you set up. A decent homestyle menu with a few Vietnamese offerings. Get it? Classic old school diner that gives a nostalgic warm feel. Ive been a customer at this specific diner for years and can proudly vouch for their breakfast menu. Their portion sizes are generous and filling! Hash browns are crispy, pancakes fluffy, and french toast just the perfect amount of sweet. Workers are super accommodating and check in on their tables. Majority of the people here are families and older folks, but that's when you know the food is authentic and homey. We came in today after seeing so many great reviews on Facebook. We used to come here often years ago but haven't been back for many years. We had a wonderful meal. The prices can't be beat and the food and service were good. I especially liked the way they served the fruit (half a banana in peel, large hunk of cantaloupe and watermelon). My dad had bacon and eggs and thought they were excellent especially for $10.95!! We will definitely be back. I ordered the hot turkey sandwich with mashed potato's and gravy (see picture). The gravy was made from beef and not turkey, which I expected. When I informed my server that I don't eat beef, she responded with, "I didn't know that." Which is fair. But then when I asked why you would put beef gravy with a turkey meal her answer was rude and she told me to order something else. My lost appetite, trust and lack of respect had me out of there. I was in the hunt for some basic breakfast when we were in the area and I came across Southshore Cafe which was one of the few diners opened on a long-weekend in the afternoon. I ordered the 2 Pancakes which came with 2 eggs, bacon or sausage. I customized it to the following + Soft-Scrambled Eggs: perfect consistency and surprisingly not over cooked. + A side of Bacon + A Sausage Patty (Not a link. It makes a difference) + Chocolate Chip Pancakes: super fluffy pancakes with the perfect amount of chocolate chips. I ate one and gave the other to the hubby. PS: there is no price difference for 1, 2, or 3 pancakes. If you find yourself hungry on Alameda's West end and you're having trouble getting a table for breakfast on Park Street, and it's too cold for Jim's on the Course - look no further. To be honest, I scoffed at Southshore Cafe years ago. To be fair, it was adjacent to my childhood dentist. Obviously I was young, stuck in my ways, and this was before mom and I took an unexpected morning drive for breakfast at South Shore where I discovered the corned beef hash Benedict. Food: I think, "simple, down to earth, hometown cafe" sums it up nicely, with all due respect to Southshore Cafe. Leave it to another unsuspecting gem of Alameda's tucked away do-right dives! For me, it's right down the middle. No frills, no complaints about the quality of the endless coffee, or the food. From the fresh side of fruit, to the corn beef hash Benedict hollandaise sauce, or should I say gravy? You already know what I'm having! Just like grandma's decor, there's nothing wildly impressive here other than the prompt table-turning service. My go-to morning satisfaction if I'm feeling cheeky is the corn beef hash Benedict. Easily two meals, one plate if you stop to enjoy it for a second before inhaling and licking the plate. Recently in, the diet called for a simple chili and cheese omelette, or the "Ortega & cheese omelette" ($13.25) w/ a choice of fruit and sourdough bread. Although not pictured in this review, Ortega is fancy for non-spicy, green chili peppers. More sweet than heat. The meal was satisfying, but I am a critic when it comes to my eggs only because a home cook myself knows how quickly eggs go from fluffy, to SpongeBob. My menu suggestion: Nobody asked for it and maybe I've been living in Los Angeles longer than the bay I was born into, but would it kill the "classic breakfast" menu to add a bangin' Breakfast Burrito? Eggs, Ortega chilis, cheese, some veggies and/or potato. It's basically an omelette rolled and wrapped into a hand sandwich to go! Food for thought... Service: Late-morning arrivals and weekends should expect peak attendance and a brief (5-15 min.) wait, but the staff at Southshore Cafe have it down. They're as quick to turn tables as they are to top off your mug with hot coffee. You may not be met with a, "Mornin' sugga, what can I get ya?" but you won't wait long and your table will all be satisfied in no time. Tip accordingly and make room for the next patrons. Parking: One of the main attractions for this hidden gem is its location. Off the beaten path, across from a rock covered building, (ye old dentist's office) with plenty of parking in a wide open (shopping center) parking lot. Sure, it doesn't have The City (bay view) Southshore restaurants should be offering their diners vs the hub of eateries IN the shopping center but hey, these businesses gotta keep their doors open too! Once you bill out why not burn some of that Benedict off by taking a stroll through the shopping center. Pass some time in Whales & Friends, or walk along the beach and take in that view. Alameda is without a doubt growing and changing with the times. I'm glad there's still some simple, hometown hidden gems like The Southshore Cafe to keep it grounded. Showed up a little after 9am on a Sunday. I was craving pancakes but wasn't in the mood for a chain like IHOP. There was no line so I was able to be seated immediately. It took a few mins for a server to drop off a menu, but another table had arrived just before me so no big deal. My pancakes came out STEAMING hot, which was fantastic. I just ordered two and they, as you can see, were large. Quite tasty as well. The bacon was fine- not fresh off the griddle but also didn't seem like it had been sitting for hours. My mom, sister and I come here every week for breakfast we love the hot coffee with their wonderful vanilla cream and a bit of hazel nut too. My mom switches from a tuna sandwich with fruit or a club sandwich with fruit instead of fries. My sister gets her New York steak with home fries and scrambled eggs. She sometimes gets a side of white rice. We sometimes share a spaghetti or grilled cheese. I love my bacon and eggs with over easy eggs ND hash browns with white toast.
