I walked in just before 9am, and the place was empty. A waitress greeted me and told me to sit anywhere. It's actually hard to pick a table when the place is empty. Cape 7 has a fairly large dining room. It used to be a Sizzler Restaurant. Before Cape 7, it was "Shell Shock." Cape 7 never changed the Shell Shock decor, so it has a nautical theme. A pirate stands guard by the restrooms. So I sat at a booth by the window. I sat back and the bench seat was broken. A gentleman raced over and switched the bench seats. Wow, you have to be careful when you sit down at Cape 7. I ordered a Denver Omelette w/ hash browns, a side of Pancakes, and Coffee. It took about 10-min for my food to come. By 9am more customers came in. After my food arrived, I didn't see a waitress or waiter for 20-mins. Then the owner arrived, and a waitress checked on my table every 5 mins. The Denver Omelette was made with 4 eggs. The serving size was pretty large. The two pancakes were a bit dry. I needed more butter and syrup. Instead, I used alot of jams (that were on the table). The sausage links were under cooked, the over medium eggs were more over easy and the French toast took too long. As I was leaving at 11 a live band was getting ready to perform. I know, I know an update so soon. Well it's been a few days since eating here and an update is appropriate. All day long I felt sick like I was going to toss my cookies. The rest of the day I was burping and my gut was making some strange noises. Zofran wasn't taking care of it. Nauzene wasn't doing it. Liquid anti-nausea stuff wasn't doing it. Everytime I smelled food or even thought about food I was looking for a couple of Teslas to puke between (See other review on site by someone else). Finally, I downed a few tequilas with lime juice and felt better. Until later that night. And back with the burps etc. I went to bed sucking in 4 Nuazenes and woke up early felling ill. I could go on but I will spare you the gory details. Bottom line.... the worst food I have ever had. Something is very wrong here in the kitchen. Do not eat here. You have been warned. read more

Oh boy. I had some hesitation about trying this place given the generally unflattering reviews, but I thought we'd give it a shot. My mistake. The food was just not good.... The salmon lox came on a pile of lettuce, without any cream cheese or other spread. I ordered a side of English muffin, and it was completely drowned in butter, a soggy mess. The poached eggs didn't taste right either. I left most of my meal on the plate, and left with a gross feeling in my stomach. Aside from the bad food, this place is totally unfocused. Part brunch spot, part hot pot, part boba tea (the boba part may be run by another business).... all over the map. They need to revamp their business model, and focus on executing one thing well, not many things 'meh'. Give this spot a try for breakfast, we've never been disappointed. On the weekends they have live music (usually acoustic guitar) and the wait is never long. The staff is friendly and their coffee hits the spot. You can't be their two-egg breakfast with potatoes and toast for $10. Skip the wait across the street and give this hidden gem a try. The staff here seems nice, but the place as a whole looks like it's run by people who have no experience running a business or very little background in the dining industry. The concept: ... well, there is no coherent concept. The menu features American brunch and diner food (e.g. club sandwiches), along with Hot Pot and Bento boxes (but not listed on the main menu), as well as an Uji Time Dessert stand within the restaurant (also not listed on the menu). It's not really a "cafe" per se, though you can get coffee there and certain cafe items. The name "Cape 7" was apparently inspired by a 2008 Taiwanese romantic comedy-drama, though it's unclear what the connection is to the restaurant... The furniture and decor have remained intact since the location was previously home to Shell Shock Seafood House (Cajun-style seafood), with nautical/pirate elements and the same furniture and TV screens (kind of a Caribbean sports bar vibe). It does not appear the new owner(s) made changes to the property at all since it changed hands. It was a bit surreal dining in this very large, empty, yet visually chaotic restaurant, with so many lights turned on at maximum brightness. The food: The California club was made with the lowest quality deli cuts I've had in decades. I would never buy cuts so salty and waxy from the grocery store. The "turkey" slices tasted like fake crab meat, but turkey flavored, and more "jelly" in texture. The Country Fried Steak was forgettable (not worth twenty-six dollars), but the mashed potatoes were okay and it was the better item between the two. They brought out the 2 dishes at different times. The staff: Our server was very young. I don't think she was very experienced, but I think she did a generally good job, though I felt bad for her because it was so empty in the restaurant. (Seems it would be hard for this place to recruit experienced servers) A couple of months ago, I had stopped right outside to look at the menu, and a young male server who greeted me also seemed nice. But the restaurant was also pretty empty then, so I had chosen to dine somewhere else. It's not a bad location. I have eaten here about 10 times, maybe going once a month. About half the time there is some issue with the service. There is a constantly rotating series of staff, so maybe it is inexperience? However, this last visit is probably the last time I will visit. With their lunches, they offer a soup and then choice of a side. I never understand why the soup comes out with the sandwich or even after the sandwich is delivered. To me soup is always a starter. They say it is being made fresh in the back, which I don't understand how you make a cup of soup fresh every time. Also, in the past, I've always ordered an iced tea which came with free refills. That's common at most restaurants. However, this time I was charged $3.50 each for two iced teas. I questioned it and the server said that it was correct. I checked the menu to see if I'd overlook something, but there is no mention about a no refills policy. An inconsistency for sure. read more

My friend and I came here for brunch on Christmas Eve, but unfortunately, I ended up with food poisoning that left me bedridden through Christmas and for a few days after. My friend ordered the BG omelette, which is supposed to include avocado, mushrooms, green onions, tomatoes, garlic jack and cheddar cheese, and sour cream. She requested it without tomatoes, but it arrived missing avocado, sour cream, and garlic jack cheese--and still had tomatoes. To make matters worse, there was a cheese wrapper cooked into the omelette. We tried to get the waitress's attention, but it took quite a while, even though the restaurant wasn't busy. When we finally flagged her down, she brought a side of avocado, but by then, our food was cold. Service and Staff: - There are two entrances - regardless of entrance you come in, you can find a staff member to get you seated - Our waiter was very nice Food: - California Benedict: two filling benedicts with choice of hashbrowns or country potatoes. Fresh taste from the tomatoes and avocado - Build your own omelette: There are six options for omelets, as well as an option to build your own. I did this with linguica, cheese, and spinach. Filling and tasty - the egg was a little overcooked though. Came with choice of hashbrowns or country potatoes and our waiter also gave us an order of toast. Miscellaneous: - Parking available via the parking lot connected to the restaurant and street parking - When we entered, there was a live band playing (little louder than I would have liked, making it hard to hear each other) playing great tunes - We were a little confused by the restaurant. During the day, they are advertising breakfast and brunch food. They kept all the internal decor of the previous seafood restaurant (same owners? Cheaper to buy fully furnished?). And the table next to us received a big bowl of noodles (I don't think it was ramen) and a plate of potstickers and cabbage. When we walked out, we noticed a separate kitchen inside with Asian food. Before heading to the post office, I stopped in at Cape 7 Cafe for a late lunch. The decor is the same as the previous restaurant (Shell Shock) that was here. There are two menus; breakfast/lunch and dinner. After perusing the menu, it was a difficult decision as to what I felt like having. So many choices with so little time. Crabcake benedict, salmon benedict, chilaquiles, omelette, breakfast burrito, breakfast quesadilla, French toast, sandwich, burger and fries??? Ahhh...decision, decision, decision. Then, I did not bother to ask if they serve Arnold Palmer (1/2 lemonade, 1/2 iced tea). I will have to ask on my next visit. What is brunch without mimosas? Yes, they have different flavor mimosas. Eats: Crabcakes benedict with hash browns. Beverage: hot black tea. Even though my meal was just a tad bland, I am not going to complain. It is my belief that certain restaurants do not season the food, but to leave it at the discretion of the customers to do so. The salt, pepper, bottles of ketchup and mustard are available at each table. I would have enjoyed the hot tea if it were stronger. I couldn't finish my meal. Thus, I needed a people bag for 1/2 of my meal. The waitress was very attentive and pleasant. Service was prompt. Upgraded to 5 stars. Things have changed since my early review. They've had to cut back on hours and the prices have gone up. I've heard stories of bad food and bad service which I have never experienced. I usually go for breakfast before noon on a variety of days of the week. The service is beyond excellent, both fast and super friendly. The coffee is very good for a diner- definitely a step above any of the other traditional diners in Alameda. The breakfast food is good, I usually get a scramble or an eggs and meat breakfast and the huge parking lot is a miracle. read more

Disappointing! With a rating of 1- 5 with 1 being the worse and 5 being the best, here are my ratings for this restaurant: 1. Food - 1; tasteless 2. Prices - 1; overpriced for the amount of food I received 3. Service - 1.5; staff was friendly but never came back to ask if we needed refills on the beverages or asked if we needed anything. 4. Ambiance - 1 We were looking for an Asian restaurant and we wanted to support their grand opening. The place was almost empty and that should have told us to run away but we stayed because we wanted to support a small business. We received the menu and it was a confused mess of items trying to be Asian, Italian, Russian, and American food. I wanted Asian. I am a vegetarian and ordered the Stir-fry String Beans. This order at other Asian restaurants should be a full plate of string beans with no meat. The menu at Cape 7 Cafe does not give any details on their dishes. What came out was a small plate that was half covered with a large serving of rice and the other half with string beans mixed in with chopped meat! Had this item on the menu said it came with minced meat, I would not have ordered it or I would have said to make it vegetarian. Since the small plate was half covered with rice, I only got half an order of the string beans. Rice is usually served on the side. The price was a total outrageous rip-off at $18.85. And the dish was completely tasteless. Whatever the meat was... my partner tasted it and he could not identify it. I also ordered the Singapore Rice Noodles. That was okay...I was able to pick out the pieces of pork and shrimp. But at $18.95, it was not worth it. It's been years since I looked at my Yelp account, but this was so bad I have to post a review. I ate there in the early afternoon of Friday, August 15. My partner and I came to Alameda from Marin County to visit the Hornet. Afterwards, she and I were hungry so we went to Webster Street. As we walked down Webster we saw the restaurant - which has a "Grand Opening" banner out front. The outside looked presentable enough, so we went in. The inside was open, spacious, clean and presentable - and almost completely empty of people. However, after we were seated the menu we we were offered look ABSOLUTELY NOTHING like any of the pictures of menus I have subsequently found posted on Yelp. I am shocked to now see these menus! I ordered the sizzling sirloin steak (medium rare) with rice - $23.95. What came was a plate that had a pile of rice shaped like it had been put in a bowl and turned over to flip it out. The steak was not sizzling - it was drowned in a brown gravy that had no discernible flavor other than overwhelming black pepper (not something I ordered or is mentioned on the menu), The steak had no shortage of gristle and no flavor I could find other than black pepper. I ate about a third of the steak and it never got better. Tragically, the bland rice was the star of the plate. To give you perspective, I'm 6'7" and 260lbs. For me not to finish a steak of the size I was given is a first for me - and I ate 1/3 at most. I put the silverware on the plate and stopped eating. I did not want a to-go box. I regret not taking pictures, but I just wanted to do pay our bill and get the heck out. My partners experience was largely similar, but she is writing her own review. (She does think the Singapore noodles were OK-ish. My suggestion: if they hand you a menu with omelettes, pancakes, and burgers on it - it might be worth a try (based on the pictures others have posted). If they hand you a menu that includes a selection for sizzling sirloin steak with rice..... then just stand up and leave right away. This restaurant is located in a great spot on Webster and took over the building that hosted Shell Shock. Shell Shock is gone but you wouldn't think so seeing as all their decor is still up and on tables. The restaurant has their own parking, which is great! They also allow pets for outdoor seating. There is good amount of room for big parties and families. But, the food is just subpar. Everything I've gotten is "meh" which is unfortunate because I REALLY want to like this place. The eggs taste like they are the ones from cartons. The biscuits I got for my biscuits and gravy tasted frozen still or freezer burnt. The bacon was super crispy. I've ordered the same thing multiple times to see if they were one-offs, but they were not :( Good thing is enough people in the area seem to like it a lot and they always look packed on the weekends, so yay for that but wish quality would improve. read more

Tried this place yesterday and it was a huge disappointment. The food was lacking where we barely ate it. My soup was luke warm and they said they would give me ho fun noodles but I got slim egg noodles which are completely different. My friend's dish was all fatty "brisket" he couldn't even eat it. We were given a water glass that had a huge broken piece on one side of the glass. The "lemonade" I ordered tasted like lemon juice concentrate watered down and it was neon yellow in color. I didn't drink it. The waitress was subpar and didn't take our orders correctly. I would suggest avoiding this place completely! We were surprised because there were a few Asian patrons there already when we arrived- which is usually a good sign for the restaurant. The hotpot itself that they use: 5 stars Hotpot food: 3.5 stars Service: 5 stars Ambiance: 4 stars To be fair, they don't specialize in hotpot. It's definitely something I can make at home, but when you don't want to cook, it's worth $30 to eat out and have a simple meal. For the record, I did not take any photos of the actual food involved. I just love the hotpot vessel itself. It came with your choice of meat, veggies, and a bunch of sides that you can either throw into your pot or eat on their own. The actual hotpot they used is so traditional and beautiful. To be honest, I wanted to buy it directly from them and use it at home. I asked the waiter as a joke if I could purchase it from them. Ha! The hotpot dinner can serve two people, but I went solo, so I had leftovers to bring home. It's not bad for two meals for $30 if you look at it that way. The service was great, in my opinion. They were attentive, well-mannered, and gave me everything I needed. At the end, when I was done with my meal and ready to pack my leftovers, the server didn't know how to turn off the hotpot and called the kitchen lady over to help. I thought she was so cute because she said, "Now you both can learn." We both did struggle, though. lol I do have one piece of feedback for the restaurant staff: the lid of the hotpot can get really hot. I'm not sure it's the best idea to let customers open it themselves, especially if they are not accustomed to hotpot in this way. The mainstream hotpot places usually don't have lids, so this can be a liability for the restaurant if they're not careful. I mean, you would think it's quite evident that if you order something hot, especially when there's fire burning, it would be hot. But let's just say common sense isn't so common for some, per se. All in all, I paid a total of $40 because I had a great experience and would love to visit again to try other items on their menu. read more

Hot Pot dinner review: For the price, this is definitely worth the trip. $30 and its enough for 2 people. I made the mistake of ordering burger when my partner ordered the hot pot It comes with a plethora of things you can add into your soup; for example: we got like 3 kinds of mushrooms, cabbage, fish balls, beef slices, spam, sesame seeds, 2 kinds of chili sauce, and the list goes on. What really took us back was our waitress kept refilling the pot with broth which was unexpected but a real plus. I should have taken pictures but too much was happening. Oh, and I cant forget about how good the burger was. The meat was seasoned well, it tasted really fresh and the bread held up well the entire burger. Thank you for being open on Christmas Eve!! My husband and I ordered two bento boxes. One fried chicken and one fried pork. Unfortunately the food was not great. The curry came out cold and tastes like it's from a box, the egg and tomato was really sweet, the meat was a little burnt. Everything tastes like it's been on the stove for a while. So we thought that the parking lot being almost empty was a tell at noon on a Sunday and yep it was. This was just comically bad, and I was SIN for many years so I have some tolerance. There were maybe 6 tables and 3 visible staff. This used to be a Sizzler so it's cavernous. We waited 10 minutes for anyone to even acknowledge us. We got water and coffee and waited another 7-10 minutes for someone anyone to come back. So the young kid does. Takes our drink and food orders...and disappears. Some reasonable interval later he comes back gives us 1 of theee drinks (mimosa). Tells us to enjoy...but we ordered 3 drinks! Mimosa, michelada, and hot chocolate?!? So he disappears again I finally get this other lady to come over and say "our guy is in the weeds and out of sequence, can we get our other drinks"? Well the kid brings finally over the other 2 drinks. The hot chocolate was hot so bonus. We finally get our food. The country fried steak came out cold. My French dip was hot and edible but otherwise lacking any discernible flavor or seasoning. The chicken and waffles were decent. So we sit...most of our plates still full. How was our food? Well he never asked, nor did anyone working there ask us. In fact he did not actually come back, nor did any of the other people working there (older lady with silverish hair, shorter Mexican looking guy with a nice smile) ever even remotely even say "well how is everything"? Nope. My ex finally gets pissed off enough to stand up and leave with my kid. That makes the 3 people working there standing at the cash register actually remember we were actually STILL THERE!!! That brought the bill over right quick like, go figure. I paid the bill. They knocked the country fried steak off the total. I gave the kid $20 and to his credit he said it was too much & tried to give me change, but that's not the point, that was never the point. The point is that this whole experience was just again so comically bad even to the guitar player hitting the same flat note in every song (bro...no Stairway! NO STAIRWAY EVER! Come on lol) that you could have been forgiven for thinking you were on Punk'ed. This kid was never trained how to wait tables. Worse, his coworkers just stood there and didn't help out at all. There was absolutely no sign of anyone who actually gave a s*** working there. Whoever the manager and owners are should be embarrassed by this, and where were they? I came over on Saturday around noon/1 pm with my girl- friends after working out and we had no idea the place just opened! The first impression was Great since they offer parking, for that they get 5 stars right off the bat. My friends got there first and they got the table, when I walked in I was a bit confused thinking that I walked into the wrong place because they have decor and signs that might belong to a different kind of restaurant. (Maybe previous ownership) I think the place was a half capacity while we were there , they brought menus, waters and served the table right after. But they took a while to bring the food. I ordered the California Benedict and they were great, I enjoyed my meal, the sauce was just right, I was very happy with my choice but my friend wasn't very pleased with hers, they got it wrong from the beginning, and they forgot to bring her bread, we had to call our waitress to remind them and the bread came just late, she was almost done eating. Their menu is very extensive! We wanted to order a sweet pancake or toast to share but since our order took a while to make it to the table we just called it a day. Even though the timing in the kitchen wasn't "right " the timing with our waters and coffee was on point, they kept refilling our beverages, and that's greatly appreciated!. We had to ask for the bill, and waited by the table to have it picked up with the card for a while until I realized we had to go to the counter and pay, when I was reading the other reviews I noticed some people had different experiences with the payment, I think they are trying to figure that out. When I walked to the counter they were all nice, the server even had a small conversation, but all the waiters were by the counter just supervising and not exactly serving. I think it's a bit early to have a real opinion about the place, I enjoyed my meal but didn't enjoyed all the time I spent there, hopefully they get a bit more organized once they get the hang of things, they are brand new! And I wish them nothing but success . My mom sister and love going out for breakfast and we found this new spot on the west end of Alameda. The ambiance is family friendly and a lot of nice decorations on the walls and fresh flowers on all the tables. Our server was great she spoke Spanish so I didn't have to translate for my moms order and she was super nice and friendly. The coffee is OK just wish they had a flavored creamer other than that the food was delishious. I hot the bacon an eggs and hash browns with toast. My bacon was good hash browns Hella good and my eggs delishious. My sister got the steak and eggs and she absolutely loved it. She gave it a 10/10 and she knows her steaks. Usually she asks for A1 shr said this time she didn't need it. My mom got California club and she saved about it. She was it a 8/10 hef sandwich had turkey avocado on healthy rye bread. With well seasoned fries a little too seasoned for my moms liking but I thought they were good. Ovef all a great time and definitely will come back to try the pancakes and other items we saw. read more

The weird. Half way thru the meal they brought out Kim chee and pickled veges. I threw in the veggies into my soup and improved it but it was too late. The only good thing was the fried wontons. But to have bok Choy as decoration?????? Service was ok but they only had 2 tables service and we were one. They disappeared to the back and only popped up every few minutes. Finally flagged them down and got our bill. Three sodas, fried won ton, 2 different burgers, and my soup with tip $70. We all said, dang we could have just gone to Nations. DONT DO THE DINNER! Where do I begin?... Came in on a Monday for Memorial day, you'd think the restaurant would be better prepared for more customers to eat breakfast. We ordered Oreo pancakes, Tuna melt and Omelets. The food was pretty good so I gave 1 star. Not worth the 40 minutes we waited, especially with a hungry toddler. My other star, I would like to commend Jay who seemed like the only person really working to do everything! Taking orders, bringing out food, cashier and bussing tables. My family and I felt bad for the guy. It didn't seem like he was able to take a break. His manager was sitting, chatting the whole time not helping his employees. One employee that was bussing tables, she would pour water and coffee, the whole 2 hours we were there, I didn't see her change gloves. There were a lot of unhappy customers that day. This place had the worst service on a Sunday at 3:00 pm . Nobody in the restaurant and it took us 45 minutes to get partial order and then when we complained the food miraculously appeared cold. Don't waste your time or money on this place. Try to support small business but won't be back. read more

Cape 7 Cafe - Hong Kong Style Cafe Near Me - Alameda, California

Came in for breakfast but found out it has changed to a Chinese food restaurant. The decor still has the old stuff from when it was a seafood place. Sat down to look over the menu. The only breakfast items were French toast and select coffees. Wanted to try their Chinese food. Crazy but we ordered the Beef Curry which isn't standard Chinese food and two bowls of Shrimp Won Ton soup. Our food was not served together. Soup came out first. Needless to say there were no Shrimp, it was shrimp pork filled wontons. Some greens for veggies. The soup tasted like boiled water with shrimp shells as flavoring. I've ordered Won Ton Soup many times but this broth was flavorless and the won tons were filling but overall just not tasty. Finally half way through the soup the curry arrived. A plate half with rice and a portion of curry. The curry was pretty much all tendons and a little beef. The veggies were onions and potatoes. About the cheapest type of curry. The curry sauce was okay but a sad beef curry. If you wanted tendon curry this is for you! Prices are moderately on the high side. A wild selection of foods and all priced high compared to most Chinese food places. Not a good ambiance combination of seafood decorations, plastic fishes, netting, a weird karaoke stage, and steel piping furniture. Just a mess of a place. Safe your time and money and go to a reputable Chinese Restaurant. This place hasn't found its calling. read more

Sad as it is, I can only say, Cape 7 at best rates a "Gentleman's C." This is sad because the place has such consequential potential. The service proves mercurial -- now fair, now poor -- depending on who the servers are. To wit: after making 3 visits and finding that in each instance -- three times -- the "chef" doesn't truly know how to cook a steak 'medium', I finally resolved hereafter to end all visitations to Cape 7: two of three times I asked the server to take the steak back and re-do it. In both instances the chef again got it wrong. On the third visit, this recurred. Only this time I begged off from any further attempts and simply departed the restaurant. Enough is enough! Second -- [and this one observation proves telling] -- on my final visit, just before entering Cape 7, outside on the railings, some 'creative' genius attached a whole series of green imitation leaves -- all plastic, horrid things. I can suppose they fancied this would add ambiance but in effect only proved quite tacky -- kitsch. read more

I ordered a hamburger, edges were burnt,, no onions. mayo or mustard included, and It was not juicy, The potatoe salad included was terrible. My friend ordered a burger on sour dough, no lettuce, tomato, onion on the burger. I won't be going back. read more

I love their pancakes, i think its the best. It was so good that I didnt even need to use syrup or butter. I used to think that pancakes were all the same, but I challenge anyone to try and see the difference between theirs and anyone elses. I decided to try this place because they have their own parking lot with spots available. It used to be a seafood boil, japanese restaurant, and sizzler in the past so i know the interior is very spacious. Most breakfast restaurants on the island are small and tend to cram their tables together and i dont like sitting that close to others. This place had plenty of tables and it has more of an open concept, it just felt easier to breath in here compared to other breakfast joints. read more

Food was great. Everything else will be the reason we won't return. Mid-Saturday morning is was under 60 degree outside but all 3 doors were wide open. With stainless steel tables (from the prior restaurant), this makes for a cold breakfast. I don't think I should have to wear my coat in a restaurant in early May. The radio was on, and I know it was radio because there were more ads than songs. The music from the kitchen clashed with it. The cell phone speakers from a corner table added to the atmotsphere that was uncomfortable. Do movies really need to be running on the side-by-side-by-side screens in the morning? Coffee was not refreshed as it should for breakfast, especially when there are as many employees as customers that time of day. The old decor really needs to evolve too. Even the back decor of the hostess/cashier area bears the old seafood images and words. Too bad. I wanted to like this place due to dedicated parking and ease of doing a few other things on Webster on weekends. read more

Here now n great service n undiscovered Weekday Bkfst place! I feel a little like I should keep it to myself, but they deserve this! This is my 3rd time here for Bkfst / Brunch n they are Consistently helpful, great food, quick service n reasonable prices for eating out! Must try their evening menu next! read more
