    shrimp wonton noodle soup
    Jessica H.

It's eh, kinda priced up though for sure. My go to is a baked dish. The quality kinda varies- the baked fish fillet with white cream sauce was good. Cheesy, tender, egg fried rice was flavorful. Portion kinda small, as the dish was very shallow. Not a lot of rice. Kinda off tho when it was the first dish that arrived to the table and it was lukewarm. I find a baked dish is typically always last since it needs time to bake, and is served scalding hot imo. That's when you know it's done right. This wasn't that. Suss The baked pork chop with cheese and tomato sauce was so disappointing and super greasy/heavy. The meat was chewy and had an unpleasant flavor. The tomato sauce was not good either. The shrimp wonton noodle soup I sadly cannot recommend, the filling was not good. Had more pork than shrimp consistency. I did not enjoy the flavor. Not aromatic. I will say, the noodles were great quality. Thin, bouncy, correct texture. What you would hope for. The soup was not good. The roast duck was good, with tender meat and fatty skin. Flavorful with the plum sauce. The fish congee was good, though a bit too runny imo once cooled down. The fried donut (you tiao) was crunchy and very doughy. Would be nice if they could slice it. I can agree with everyone about their thoughts on the 18% mandatory tip fee, it's crazy lol. Mandatory service fee for hk service (which is minimal service). It was so hard to flag down the waiter for refilling water, or to get more napkins. The place was empty and they were on their phone the whole time. Waiting for that automatic tip. Whatever man.

a local san carlos restaurant that moved from the smaller location along laurel to a bigger space behind on el camino real...quite an extensive hong kong cafe menu....porridge (congee), curry, sizzling plates, breakfast, noodle soups, etc...ordered pork with preserved eggs congee $14.25, pork with mustard greens noodle soup $14.95, and spaghetti with tomato sauce and pork katsu $17.25...pork katsu comes with 2 large cutlets...quite the big portion for the price...spaghetti noodles were fine, but sauce was on the sweeter side...different from traditional, but decent...congee had a good consistency...not too watery and not too thick...seasoned well and good...same for the noodle soup...seasoned well and flavorful....$60 total after tax and tip for 3 dishes for 3 people...very filling meal....

Interior Design - 4/5 Felt like a lot of things were put together. Nothing really stood out to me, but overall it was still a nice environment to sit down and eat. Comfortable atmosphere and pretty clean. Customer Service - 5/5 Customer service was solid. The server was attentive and warned me the baked spaghetti plate would be hot before serving it. Small details like that always make the experience feel better. Food - 4/5 4.5/5 Dish Ordered: Baked Spaghetti One of the classics at a Hong Kong Café. Honestly tasted like childhood. The sauce was delicious, rich, and comforting without being overwhelming. Everything was cooked just right and came out piping hot. Hit or Miss: Hit. Definitely something I would come back for again. 3/5 Drink Ordered: Hong Kong Style Milk Tea It was okay. Nothing bad about it, but nothing super memorable either. Pretty standard flavor overall. Hit or Miss: Slight Hit. Would drink it again if I was already there, but not something I'd specifically crave. Additional Comment: Overall, pretty solid experience. Nothing was mind blowing, but everything was done well. The baked spaghetti was definitely the highlight for me and the service helped make the meal enjoyable. I'd come back mainly for the spaghetti and a comfortable casual meal.

I love a good hk cafe. Funny thing is that I don't eat have the menu since it tends to be on the heavier side. We came here on a Sunday a bit passed noon to a short 15 minute wait. Parking was challenging as it was the farmer's market. They use Yelp waitlist. The place is small and we were a party of 5. Won ton noodle soup - Came out fast. It was just okay. Mainly for our toddler. Pickled mustard greens with pork noodles - you can select your noodles. This was basic but decent. Not as good as those you get a Taiwanese cafe. Baked Shrimp over rice with portuguese sauce - Tasted like curry to me. I rarely get the baked dishes because they tend to be a bit on the heavier side. My husband and in-laws like this. Upgraded this with soup and garlic bread - the soup had a sour aftertaste - I think this is from a can. The garlic bread was good! Chicken Katus w/ rice - Surprisingly good. My toddler loved it. Their milk tea was perfection (we had dim sum yesterday and the milk tea was watered down) Heavy on the MSG - I passed out. One unisex large and surprisingly nice bathroom. I would still come back.

Fun casual option in San Carlos and their menu is extensive. I got the bbq pork with fried rice and also tried the creamy fish with fried rice. Comforting Chinese food. Plenty of seating in the restaurant too and it was crowded by noon on a Saturday. Note, there's also a Sunshine HK express on the main drag of San Carlos downtown, but they only sell tacos. Weird...

Not an authentic HK style cafe. Most workers don't even speak Chinese, let alone Cantonese. Most of the food here felt like reheated premade food. Pretty sure I can cook it myself better. The HK food scene in the Bay Area is pretty sad, but this place is definitely in the avoid level. I'm so mad that I took my friend here to try

Kept coming back :) Top 4 is must get (for a group). Hainan chicken could be a bit more tender. The french toast with peanut butter is fantastic!

Came here for lunch on a weekday and my party of 3 was immediately seated. The menu is quite extensive with lots of variety and classic Hong Kong cafe dishes. We ordered the wonton shrimp noodle soup, curry pork chop with fried egg rice, big 4 happiness platter, and some drinks. The wonton shrimp noodle soup was okay, a bit underwhelming in my opinion as it was just a very plain dish. The wontons were decent and the noodles were thin but nothing to write home about. The curry pork chop with egg fried rice was quite good. Nice curry sauce and the pork chop was cooked well, still succulent and tender. Paired well with the fluffy fried rice. The appetizer platter was a fun plate to share. Nothing spectacular about it but it was solid and I think it's great if you want to split with people. The best part of the experience here though was the service. The owner was out on the floor taking orders and helping with service along with other wait staff. Everyone was friendly and attentive, consistently check in on our table and refilling waters. There is a large parking lot right next to the shop so parking is simple! Overall, great service though food wasn't too memorable. The prices are a bit pricey in my opinion but I think if you have a soft spot for Hong Kong cafes and want good service, this place is worth checking out!

Love their baked portugese chicken over egg fried rice, curry fish balls and they make the best hot hk lemon tea. My husband loves their Black pepper chicken with meat sauce spaghetti and their chicken wings are pretty good too. He also likes their hk milk tea and hk milk tea with coffee. Service is great and staff is nice and friendly. Wish this place was closer to home!

    let's try this

First time visiting this HK-style café. The décor inside is pretty cute and full of Hong Kong vibes. The menu has a good variety of classic HK dishes. I ordered the curry beef brisket -- the curry was quite good and I really liked it. The appetizer was just average, but the hot yuanyang was tasty. Overall, the food is above average. However, what really turned me off was the mandatory 18% tip even for a two-person party. For an HK-style café, especially during lunch, this feels excessive. And if your party is six or more, they charge 20%. I honestly don't feel comfortable with such a high mandatory tip, and I won't come back again -- there are plenty of better options nearby.

This place always hits the spot for nostalgic hk cafe food. I like the chicken wings, baked porkchop rice and their curry dishes too. The hk milk tea and lemon ice tea are also very tasty and not too sweet. Service is quick, and the seats inside make it a comfy place to chat and chill.

All 10/10! Hot Milk Tea - a must-try! Pork Chop - perfectly seasoned and so satisfying. Spam and Egg Macaroni - simple, comforting, and delicious.

10/10 10/10 10/10 Im glad I stumbled onto this place on Yelp to try. HK cafe's are hard to come by now; there arent enough of them in the bay area. Walking into this restaurant, youll realize you've stepped in Asia, with lanterns on the ceiling. You will hear Cantonese flowing around, and it'll remind you immediately of Hong Kong. BEEF CURRY HAR FUN: The beef is tender and infused with a luscious curry sauce, slow-cooked to perfection, allowing all the spices to meld into the meat. Think of a warm, comforting combination of garlic, ginger, turmeric, cumin, and a subtle kick of heat from chili, making each bite a delightful experience. This dish has all the comforting flavors you're used to eating. HAINAN CHICKEN: The chicken itself is tender and juicy, poached to perfection in a fragrant broth that leaves the skin silky and the meat incredibly moist. Again, the flavors are comforting; it reminds me of home. Make sure you get extra of the ginger/scallion sauce! CHEURNG FUN: This didnt taste as fresh as we wanted, but it was still good and soft. Love the hoisin and peanut sauce over it. HONG KONG MILK TEA: They do it right here with their milk tea. It also comes in the CORRECT cup and plate (yknow, the Black and White set) Service is friendly and fast. If you are itching for authentic Hong Kong food, look no further! I cant wait to go back and try more items!

Let me say this place is an EASY…read morefive stars but since I've been a lot of times I have noticed some things that could be better. That said, I'll talk about the good things first. Pretty much everything on the menu is good here. If there's something that sounds interesting, get it. If you've been curious about spaghetti dishes at southern Chinese restaurants, get one. The General's Chicken is actually insanely good here, like the best lunch special I know anywhere, and it's General's Chicken. Hainan chicken, salt and pepper spare ribs, rice clay pots, eggplant dishes, and even Chinese curry are items I commonly see ordered around me. The tofu seafood claypot is fantastic. Pretty sure they have Peking spareribs and they were great iirc. The chow fun dishes are only good, not super exceptional, you rarely see people order them. Alright the few things I've noticed that could be improved have all happened when I come closer to closing than opening. I've had a couple times where the tea kettle was still soapy, so the tea tasted awful. Their kettles keep the tea piping hot for the whole meal, so maybe that makes them hard to clean. But I've also had the tea come not very hot. They don't like giving you water and tea, some Chinese service lol. And for some reason, the food has also been a bit worse when I came later too Space is small and it can be crowded, especially on weekends. Come early for the best experience

We also decided to try a couple of things we had never ordered before after seeing other tables enjoy them. The beef chow fun looked amazing when we saw someone else order it, so we gave it a try. Unfortunately, it was a bit disappointing. The noodles were on the dry side and lacked the flavorful wok hei and savory taste that I usually look for in a good beef chow fun. It was just missing that something special. We also ordered the Chinese chicken salad because we wanted something lighter to balance out the meal. I was expecting the traditional shredded chicken with lettuce, but instead it came with thin tortilla-style chips underneath. That really changed the whole feel of the dish for me. I was hoping for a refreshing salad, but the chips made it feel more greasy, and the mustard oil dressing was not really my preference. The chicken was also a little dry. I probably would not order this again. The good news is the salt and pepper spare ribs were still delicious, just like we expected. They remain one of our favorites here. Overall, I would stick with the dishes we already know and love and skip the beef chow fun and chicken salad next time.

Curry Beef Stew I've never had Curry beef stew before, prefer chicken, curry, but for some odd reason, I decided to order this dish. It was underwhelming and I won't order it again. The Curry sauce itself was OK but the big long pieces of beef were somewhat gross, lots of fat. They added plenty of slices to onions and a few pieces of green pepper and Julienned carrots, but that's about it for being called a stew. So I learned my lesson by not sticking to my usual order, and won't order wonton soup or curry beef stew again.

Staff was friendly and checked on us occasionally to make sure all was well. We ordered: - Smoked chicken (5/5): Definitely the star of the night, this was a cold dish perfectly smoked and tender. A large portion that seemed like a whole chicken and a steal for only $23 - Green Beans (4.5/5): Another large portion, well charred with perfect texture. Served with ground pork and a hint of spice - Meatball Clay Pot (3.5/5): the server did say it was soupy but it was probably my mistake as I thought it would be more like the Shanghainese lion head braised meatballs. Instead it was a very simple clear broth with Napa cabbage, small meatballs and a few strands of vermicelli noodles. The broth flavor was extremely mild and the meatballs didn't have much flavor and were firmer than expected. Our Cantonese friend liked it as he felt it was homey and comforting but I felt it was too boring - House Special Fried Rice (4/5): another huge portion, a solid egg fried rice with very large shrimp and some beef. - Pan Fried Beef Buns (2/5): In Beijing these are often translated to Doornail Meat Buns due to their round shape. Extremely juicy, almost like a gravy inside, and generously filled but the beef tasted a bit gamey which may be due to the spices used, but were off putting to us.

I ate the greens, but this dish came out fast and wasn't warm or heated enough. Beijing Mu Shu Pork - 5/5 I enjoyed the taste and texture of this mix of pork, egg, wood ear, cucumber, and golden needles. We were forewarned that this dish doesn't come with pancakes, like typical mu shu entrees do. We received a complimentary shredded potato chilled appetizer (4/5) and warm sesame balls dessert (3/5). Sesame balls seemed overfried. Restaurant has its own dedicated parking lot, so servers are expecting you to enter from the door closest to that. We entered through the street main entrance, which caught them by surprise. Restaurant appears to be a converted house, so you can dine in various little rooms. Restaurant was cold inside. It seemed that one door would not necessarily stay shut. I also don't think the heat was turned up. I felt like all of us were wearing coats. I chose most of the dishes and let my friend order in Mandarin Chinese. The chef came out a couple times to check on us, but primarily interacted with her in Chinese.

The Wor Won Ton Soup was very good. The soup had napa cabbage, carrots and broccoli. The chicken was tender and easy to eat. It also had pieces of beef and a few shrimp. The broth was light, and not salty. I also ordered the "Hot Dragon Chicken Wings." With a name like that, I expected very spicy wings. The wings were not spicy at all. The kicker was they do not have any house made sauces, so if you want good mustard or something edible for dipping - welcome to shitty packet hell as they refused to provide those (if they existed). I'm curious what they do when you're in-house but if I''m paying for the same food I'm not sure why I wouldn't get something besides high-fructose corn syrup garbage stamped out in a factory two years ago. This reflects lack of care to the product and customer experience. Highly unfortunate for an establishment that used to be "decent" as I said.
