I've been going to Cheung Hing since its first location on Noriega, San Francisco. I have always been a fan but this location is very disappointing to say the least. Got here about 11:50 am on a Friday. At first I was glad to see that it was taken over by the Cheung Hing name but oh boy was I wrong. Food - Very low grade dim-sum, maybe 2 stars. Steamed at least a day old as parts of the skin were hard and discolored. Reheat for sure. Service - It took 30 minutes for me to get my food. Wonton soup and a few dim-sum items. A party of 7 came in after me and was having a feast with lobster and noodles and a bunch of other items. If you want to be put in a bad mood on a Friday to start the weekend, come here and order togo and they will help you do just that! So frustrating sitting and waiting, while watching the chaotic dysfunction in this place. If you do not care for any of what I said above, by all mean, have at it. We had a large Family reunion dinner. They are very accommodating and we had a semi private room. I found the food was however, inconsistent. The salt and pepper pork chops were good **** ; the beef chow fun was decent ****; clams with black bean sauce, quite as good as I was hoping **; taro dumpling was pretty good ****; spinach and shrimp dumplings were OK***; there were a few other dishes that I would rate either three star or two star. Very disappointing experience. We ordered four dishes to go, and unfortunately, all four were extremely salty and difficult to eat. The salt and pepper ribs were especially disappointing--they tasted overly fried and did not taste fresh at all. We called the restaurant to let them know about our experience. The lady who answered simply said "yes" and "okay" without offering any apology, explanation, or solution. The lack of customer service made the experience even worse. Cheung Hing fit the bill. Quiet table and choice of food. We stayed for noon-4pm and no one bothered us. We had about $80 worth of food so rounding it up to $100 was great for the table Service was fine, food plentiful. We dined on a Saturday eve at 6pm and the restaurant and parking had plenty of space. Normally, it's very busy and perhaps wasn't due to holiday weekend. Good for us! The staff were very friendly, attentive and changed our plates at least 3x. They did not rush us and anticipated our needs before asking. The two dine-in only specials that caught our attention were the dungeness crab with scallions and ginger, which we asked to prepare w/salt and pepper ($36) & lobster e-fu noodle ($28). We also ordered green beans, soft noodles w/prawns, salted fish and chicken fried rice, and salted fish, tofu and chicken in a clay pot. All were tasty and there was something for everyone. What I like: - pecking duck (crispy skin, juicy meat) - shumai (very bouncy: good ratio of meats) - shrimp rolls (i like how their soy sauce are lighter and less salty compared to other places I haven tried.) We were told a table would be ready soon so we stood near the cash register. Then a staff saw us in the way so she scooted us to the actual waiting area by lightly pushing my back. Now I didn't appreciate her putting hands on me. That is not nice. That took me by surprise and made the lunch meal not as happy as can be. We were just 4 and they finally gave us a big table of 10. I appreciate that they didn't have us wait for a smaller table even though big tables were available. The runny egg with rice flat noodle looked perfectly done. We ordered the roast duck $19, honey walnut prawns $20, sweet and sour pork $17, stir fried beef fillet with assorted mushrooms $20, braised tofu and mushroom $17, BBQ pork and roast pork combination $19, fish with spicy salt $18. Located near the freeway ramps down in Belmont, it's wedged into a rather empty parking lot, while it has its own spaces in the back road where you enter, if you come in from the Main Street it gets a bit confusing as it's mostly just an empty lot at the front with debunked businesses, so just keep head back towards the other side of the building where it's technically the front door. Cheung Hing is a Chinese banquet style restaurant that also offers dim sum during the lunch time. I have been here for both the banquet style meal, and have also experienced the dim sum. Their menu is pretty typical on both sides of the meal menus. They were very busy for the banquet dinner and also when we visited for the dim sum. Price wise, they're not terribly cheap, albeit cheap for Belmont, both regular menu and dim sum menu. Portions of the food here are also not going to be huge by any means, but will offer enough for your typical eater, but don't expect large portions so you may need to order more to be filled. The service here is so-so, as the waiters generally have a hard time paying attention to you, and when you order things they will at times forget certain things and take a long time which really helps to raise the blood pressure. At the end of the day though, what really makes Cheung Hing not so special is the food itself, which is pretty mediocre and bland for Chinese cuisine. Just doesn't really feel like even the basic of dim sum dishes were good either as the ingredients just didn't have that freshness to it. There's not a ton of options in the area for dim sum, or at least actual sit down spots, so you could certainly do worse than Cheung Hing, but overall the restaurant just so-so from quality, quantity, and service. read more

Decent dim sum restaurant with accompanying attentive service. Availability of parking in the large lot behind the building was a plus. Would have upped the rating to at least four stars but for the mediocracy of the beef chow fun that lacked depth and taste as well as the blanched choy sum dish that was served with a side of hoisin sauce instead of what should have been oyster sauce. One of our dishes that we ordered the fried taro/pork puff (wu goc) was also not served. The dispensing of hot chili sauce and mustard were in extremely small portions for a table of six diners. We had to request two additional refills which did not contribute to a great dining experience. We came to celebrate my dad's birthday today, and there were six of us in total. 3 adults 3 kids. We left a $20 tip, but our server, Seung, the lady, repeatedly told us that $20 was not enough and insisted that we should leave $40 instead. I explained that tipping should be optional and based on the customer's discretion, but she continued pointing to the $40 amount and saying that was what she expected. She was just standing and waiting for me to change tbe tips. Feeling pressured, I eventually increased the tip to $30, which she then accepted. I believe the amount of a tip should be decided by the customer, not dictated by the restaurant or its staff. read more

Excellent Cantonese cuisine! My family and I went there for dinner a couple of weeks ago, ordered one of the prefix dinner set plus a few add-on. All the dishes were scrumptious, like your typical Bay Area Chinese offerings that we come to know. In addition, the prices were reasonable given the current economy where everything is outrageously priced. Though they didn't seem very busy even though it was during the prime time dinner hours. This used to be China village for a very long time. One of the only Dim sum restaurants around. It was OK. It was an institution. This has the feel of an older higher class dim sum restaurant. white table cloths, nice silverware and linen napkins. It's a bigger feel than most of the restaurants around. Although not super big. This place serves dim sum very late. You don't generally see late night dim sum, so i have to give them some props for that. The dim sum is good like you would expect from a traditional chinese restaurant. The menu is prety good. It's has a large selection. None of the food will win a michelin star, but it's a very good classic chinese restaurant. Most of the old standard chinese restaurants have shut down and this is one of the last classics. The service is good. They try hard. They aren't rude. (not authentic). They are pleasant. I definitely recommend this place to anyone who wants standard chinese food. This place used to be China Village dim sum. I think they changed ownership a few years ago and it became Cheung Hing dim sum. We tried a few dishes here and I felt like the food tended to be a bit hit or miss. I want to like at least half of the dishes we order, but here I felt that didn't happen. -Xiao long bao was pretty disappointing. The skin was too soggy. In fact it was so soggy that it developed a ton of wrinkles on the skin. It looked like I was looking at the surface of a human brain. I was taken aback. The inner filling was ok but I could not get over how weird the skin was. -Beef rice noodle: ok, could have used a bit more sauce. I thought the skin was a tiny bit too gummy for my liking -birds nest noodles: not bad. I don't eat the seafood but I'll eat the vegetables! -spare ribs: I liked them. The sauce was right and the pieces weren't too hard to eat. -pea shoots: this one needed salt. There was like no flavor for this one -tea: they charge per person. Also we asked for gukbo (chrysanthemum and pu erh) but they gave us just chrysanthemum tea. read more

The food was a little less than warm. We had beef balls (a little bland), chive dumplings, radish cake, the latter two were alright. We also rice rolls which did come from the kitchen and were hot. The beef rice rolls were not bad. We also ordered the crispy shrimp and rice roll, which is shrimp paste wrapped inside Chinese donuts and rice sheet. There were very little shrimp, mostly just donuts and the donuts were hard and very oily. I usually ask for chill sauce. Cantonese chill sauce is usually on the sweet side and not spicy. The ambience was inviting the staff seemed very nice, although putting in my order and waiting for my food seemed a lot longer than it needed to, despite their only being, a few tables filled with customers. Now, to get to the main purpose of the review, which is the food, I ordered the barbecue pork, fried rice, the chicken chow-mein, the salt and pepper tofu with a side of dumplings. Enough to feed 2 to 3 people and still have some leftovers. Mainly, because those are core dishes off any Chinese food menu. I will always be fair with my critiques. But I would say that overall was a solid: three out of five (3 of 5 stars). I can easily say that it was the definition of average. I understand people work hard to create their food. So, I will not knock that, but it just felt as if the noodles they were using were the type from a Ramen packet. not the traditional chow mein noodles you find in majority of Asian restaurants. The fried rice, although looked amazing. tasted as if there was no salt and pepper added to it. Sometimes simplicity can go a long way. The salt and pepper tofu unfortunately had way too much salt on it. And yes! I get the irony of salt and pepper tofu tasting too salty. But that's what happens when there's overcompensation. I would say the best part of this dish was the dumplings and I would definitely go there again for those. Maybe it was a bad night, maybe it was because the chef was having an off day. I'm not sure. When Cheung Hing took over China Village, we hoped they would retain staff and continue to provide good food...but I cannot say that...because it's even better than it used to be. It's now our go-to place on the Peninsula for Dim Sum. We've recently had three large groups and every dish has been high quality. We really do hope they put in some sound abatement fabric or tiling, though, since many of our family and friends now wear hearing aids and it's very difficult for us to hear in the clatter and chatter of happy dim sum! read more

April 27, 2036 tried them again with Dine in coupon. Had circled items ahead of time. No Service except delivery of items. Had requested water and Tea (1.50)! I waited 20 minutes for check. I got my boxes and boxed my food. I cleared my table dishes to the basins left in full cart just behind me. Then after another 10 minutes i went to the register to check out and had another 20 minutes there before I could leave. The Credit Card System was not working. 50 minutes of waiting total to leave. I finally offered to pay cash but they said they weren't sure if the Credit Card System wouldn't charge me. ..the food was OK. No service. Took 50 minutes total of waiting after meal was finished to leave. When staff contacted Owner Michael he didn't seem to be bothered. No Face. Won't be bringing family or friends here. Not worth it.
