I took a friend to Gin Mon at Carlmont Shopping Center because she was craving Chinese food. The restaurant was smaller than I expected based on the photos I had seen, and unfortunately, the dining area felt dark and unclean. We ordered the garlic eggplant, prawns with black bean sauce, salt-and-pepper wings, and a small bowl of steamed rice. The eggplant was savory, but I couldn't taste much of fresh garlic. The prawn dish was mostly green bell peppers and onions, with only about eight small shrimp. The salt-and-pepper wings were dry, lightly seasoned, and tasted as though they had been cooked earlier and reheated. Even the steamed rice seemed old rather than freshly prepared. Overall, the meal was disappointing. The chicken wings were dry, and even the steamed white rice did not taste fresh. I don't think I'll be back anytime soon. read more

Friend recommended this for potstickers ?!? I'll get to that Ordered dinner for two to go , they DID make a substitute (cashew chicken, changed to kung pao chicken) . And an order of potstickers. First off , it's very expensive. But everything is now . For wonton soup, 4 potstickers , 1 kung pao, 1 sweet and sour pork, fried rice and a side order of potstickers it was almost $80 . The actual entrees were really good ( sweet and sour pork, kung pao chicken) service was friendly and fast . BUT I have been searching Redwood City, San Carlos , Belmont and surrounding areas for a decent potsticker. Sadly to no avail. Oddly enough the best potstickers are at cache creek casino over an hour away at Chang Shou. This place is no different. Their potstickers were undercooked perogies. Not sure they know what a potsticker is around here. Most places mislabel by calling them gyosa, or dumplings, or even buns. A good potsticker is firm, well cooked and as close to burnt on the bottom as you can get without actually causing a char. They are not ....wet, soggy, doughy, or a straight up undercooked pork bun. Went to Gin Mon for an early dinner, and I ended up being pleasantly surprised! For our meal we ordered a few dishes to share. Pan fried noodles, general tso's chicken, combo fried rice, and honey walnut shrimp. I thought all the dishes were executed fairly well and enjoyed each dish. My favorites were the honey walnut shrimp and the pan fried noodles. I thought the portion size versus the price was pretty good. Food came out relatively quick too. We came in before the early dinner rush. When we first got there, there was only one other table being served, and by the time we finished, pretty much every table was taken up. The gentleman who was serving us was very kind and attentive. He was working hard as the only server in the restaurant, so kudos to him for providing great service. While I wouldn't consider the food s-tier, it was more than serviceable. If I'm craving Chinese food in the city of Belmont, this would satisfy the craving for sure. read more

Stopped by Gin Mon for an early dinner & considering I've grown up in the area, this spot was new to me. We ordered the pan fried noodles, Fried Rice, Honey Walnut Shrimp & General Chicken. All dishes we well made and the shrimp didn't feel too heavy or overly battered. The waiter was attentive & kind, plus the restaurant wasn't too busy but even for eating around 3:45, there was a lot more than I expected. not sure why this place only has 3.6 stars; came here for the first time after i noticed it when i went to truffle poke 2 doors down. me and fiancé decided to try it and will not start coming here more often! We got the schezuan dinner for 2 and boy was it filling! Along with our pictures provided, we got the hot and sour soup, which was the perfect amount for the both of us. We came on a Tuesday afternoon, not busy at all, service was quick; even the food came out quick and hot! Was in the Belmont area and stopped by for a quick lunch - restaurant was decently filled, and service was nice. Food is good for the most part, but as a Chinese myself, this place cooks more towards American style Chinese food. It's not exactly my cup of tea, but it's also one of the better American Chinese food I've had. I've been going to Gin Mon for decades, and they never disappoint. I stopped in for lunch yesterday and was seated immediately. I ordered a lunch special consisting of the chicken with vegetables and brown rice. It comes with soup (I ordered the hot & sour) and appetizer (egg roll). The soup was delicious! It had just the right amount of heat/spice. The entree was quite tasty, but could have been hotter (temperature). The staff are extremely kind and accommodating. I am updating my review to just saying that the dishes at this restaurant are just "okay." On Christmas we decided to be brave and to give Gin Mon a try again. Being a Belmont native and trying so many other Chinese restaurants in the area....well, this is just disappointing. I thought to myself, maybe I am not ordering correctly? Maybe I am missing something? Though even my husband thought the same way as myself and said "it just doesn't have a good flavor." Everyone who works there is really friendly, but Grace always remembers our family and makes it a great experience. They also can make many of their dishes gluten free if you ask- we've ordered the fried rice, cashew chicken, and sizzling rice soup gluten free before and it's all been delicious! They have a large selection of many delicious options, and there is something for everyone on the menu! The restaurant itself is very cozy with maybe ten tables. Terrible food. The pot stickers were perogies. So much breading. The tangerine chicken had no citrus taste whatsoever. What made it absolutely the worst was the chow mein with BBQ pork. We were here last 20+ years ago. The owner Ben Wang sold out 8 years ago. The restaurant is located in Belmont in the Carlmont Village at Alameda and Ralston. The place is small and holds around 40, however, when we arrived the place was empty ( around 4:00pm). There was only one person behind the counter and no server, so we waited for ten minutes when the server who must have been on break arrived. They do mostly take out. Now to the food. We only ordered three seafood dishes: pan fried noodles with meat, shrimp and vegetables, shrimp fried rice and honey walnut shrimp. The shrimp was delicious as well as the rice, but when I took a bite of a piece of chicken in the pan fried noodles, it had the most nasty and foul taste that I had to put in a napkin. It really gave me the shivers so I only ate the noodles The meal was $60.00. I overheard one takeout order was $150.00 The price does not reflect the quality of the food.
