First off , it's very expensive. But everything is now . For wonton soup, 4 potstickers , 1 kung pao, 1 sweet and sour pork, fried rice and a side order of potstickers it was almost $80 . The actual entrees were really good ( sweet and sour pork, kung pao chicken) service was friendly and fast . BUT I have been searching Redwood City, San Carlos , Belmont and surrounding areas for a decent potsticker. Sadly to no avail. Oddly enough the best potstickers are at cache creek casino over an hour away at Chang Shou. This place is no different. Their potstickers were undercooked perogies. Not sure they know what a potsticker is around here. Most places mislabel by calling them gyosa, or dumplings, or even buns. A good potsticker is firm, well cooked and as close to burnt on the bottom as you can get without actually causing a char. They are not ....wet, soggy, doughy, or a straight up undercooked pork bun. Stopped by Gin Mon for an early dinner & considering I've grown up in the area, this spot was new to me. We ordered the pan fried noodles, Fried Rice, Honey Walnut Shrimp & General Chicken. All dishes we well made and the shrimp didn't feel too heavy or overly battered. The waiter was attentive & kind, plus the restaurant wasn't too busy but even for eating around 3:45, there was a lot more than I expected. Went to Gin Mon for an early dinner, and I ended up being pleasantly surprised! For our meal we ordered a few dishes to share. Pan fried noodles, general tso's chicken, combo fried rice, and honey walnut shrimp. I thought all the dishes were executed fairly well and enjoyed each dish. My favorites were the honey walnut shrimp and the pan fried noodles. I thought the portion size versus the price was pretty good. Food came out relatively quick too. We came in before the early dinner rush. When we first got there, there was only one other table being served, and by the time we finished, pretty much every table was taken up. The gentleman who was serving us was very kind and attentive. He was working hard as the only server in the restaurant, so kudos to him for providing great service. While I wouldn't consider the food s-tier, it was more than serviceable. If I'm craving Chinese food in the city of Belmont, this would satisfy the craving for sure. read more

not sure why this place only has 3.6 stars; came here for the first time after i noticed it when i went to truffle poke 2 doors down. me and fiancé decided to try it and will not start coming here more often! We got the schezuan dinner for 2 and boy was it filling! Along with our pictures provided, we got the hot and sour soup, which was the perfect amount for the both of us. Was in the Belmont area and stopped by for a quick lunch - restaurant was decently filled, and service was nice. Food is good for the most part, but as a Chinese myself, this place cooks more towards American style Chinese food. It's not exactly my cup of tea, but it's also one of the better American Chinese food I've had. I've been going to Gin Mon for decades, and they never disappoint. I stopped in for lunch yesterday and was seated immediately. I ordered a lunch special consisting of the chicken with vegetables and brown rice. It comes with soup (I ordered the hot & sour) and appetizer (egg roll). The soup was delicious! It had just the right amount of heat/spice. The entree was quite tasty, but could have been hotter (temperature). The staff are extremely kind and accommodating. I am updating my review to just saying that the dishes at this restaurant are just "okay." On Christmas we decided to be brave and to give Gin Mon a try again. Being a Belmont native and trying so many other Chinese restaurants in the area....well, this is just disappointing. I thought to myself, maybe I am not ordering correctly? Maybe I am missing something? Though even my husband thought the same way as myself and said "it just doesn't have a good flavor." Each week my children and I order Chinse food and we have spread out to other areas and surroundings. Sadly, I guarantee this is just popular because it's the only Chinese restaurant in Belmont. It's pricey and just doesn't have a good taste. My family and I have been going to Gin Mon for years and have always had a great experience. Everyone who works there is really friendly, but Grace always remembers our family and makes it a great experience. They also can make many of their dishes gluten free if you ask- we've ordered the fried rice, cashew chicken, and sizzling rice soup gluten free before and it's all been delicious! They have a large selection of many delicious options, and there is something for everyone on the menu! The restaurant itself is very cozy with maybe ten tables. There is also lots of parking as they share a parking lot with the grocery store, Baskin Robbins, subway, and several other stores and restaurants. We were here last 20+ years ago. The owner Ben Wang sold out 8 years ago. The restaurant is located in Belmont in the Carlmont Village at Alameda and Ralston. The place is small and holds around 40, however, when we arrived the place was empty ( around 4:00pm). There was only one person behind the counter and no server, so we waited for ten minutes when the server who must have been on break arrived. They do mostly take out. Now to the food. We only ordered three seafood dishes: pan fried noodles with meat, shrimp and vegetables, shrimp fried rice and honey walnut shrimp. The shrimp was delicious as well as the rice, but when I took a bite of a piece of chicken in the pan fried noodles, it had the most nasty and foul taste that I had to put in a napkin. It really gave me the shivers so I only ate the noodles The meal was $60.00. I overheard one takeout order was $150.00 The price does not reflect the quality of the food. The third waited for many minutes while we politely waited, not wanting our food to cool. I had to go to the front desk to ask about the third dish. Answer was a shrug. My husband called in a pickup order for the two of us tonight (Saturday 12/7) at 3:27 PM. The employee said it would be 20 minutes. We were about 20 minutes away so headed on over. My husband went inside, paid, and was told it wasn't ready yet because we had requested for it to be ready at 4 (we never said that). They said it would be another 15 minutes. After 15 minutes of waiting in the car he went back inside and took a seat at a chair/waiting area near the counter. The employee proceeded to help 4 other people before acknowledging my husband. Once my husband stood up, he was finally acknowledged, handed a bag, and left. We live an hour away, but my husband has been coming here for decades and even had his high school graduation dinner at this establishment which is why we've remained loyal customers despite the distance/restaurants closer to us. When we arrived home at 5:31, we checked the bag to find that we had someone else's order. When my husband attempted to call the restaurant, it did not ring and he was met with the following message: "Your call could not be completed. The number you have dialed has been disconnected." We used my phone to call less than 30 seconds later and it rang and went through. We have no choice but to assume they may have blocked my husband's number. We told them that we were given the wrong order and expressed our disappointment given that we were not in a position to just go back to swap the orders. The employee was immediately on the defense, stating how *she* was not the one who made the mistake, despite us not blaming anyone in particular. She confirmed that our food was indeed sitting at their counter. She was extremely rude, curt, and at no point used the words "I'm sorry". We asked for a refund, which was a much more difficult process than it should've been and when we asked how long before we can expect the refund, we were met with more snippiness. The fact that we placed the order at 3:27 and by 5:31 had not received a call to ask our whereabouts even further affirms our suspicion that they blocked my husband's number. Why would they leave an order to sit for hours and not attempt to contact the customer? I'll definitely be keeping an eye on my bank statement but our days of coming here are sadly over. read more
