Hainan rice
Doris G.

Parking is available in the shopping center. Always fun eating under a tree inside the restaurant. We were greeted and seated quickly. All the waitstaff carry portable computers to put your order in quickly. Always love the generous portion of hainan rice dish. I ordered the hainan chicken plate: big chunks of chicken, hainan rice, peanuts appetizer and the lovely ginger scallion sauce. The spices make this dish delicious. I needed a box to take home leftovers. The other dish we ordered was beef stew. This tastes so classic with the subtle 5 spice flavor shining throughout this dish. The spices are not overwhelming. Probably could cook the beef tendons longer and they were quite chewy.

Bad experience all around. Made reservations for 8 people, and when we arrived to check in, the guy in front says to wait and they are getting our table ready. They had a sign up list and I asked if I should put our name on it, and he said "no", we will sit you ASAP. We had a 1 pm reservation. Anyway, there were two parties of 8 that put their name on the list afterwards and our family was waiting 30 minutes already, and he sat the first party already before us. My son asked him again, and he said to wait again, and we gave him the benefit of the doubt. Anyway, we said if he sat the next party of 8 before us again, then that's really mess up. Guess what, he sat those parties first before us and completely forgot our reservation at 1pm. I finally got his attention and told him that we have been waiting for an hour and asked why he sat two parties without reservations and not us. He acted like he forgot and said next one will be us with no apologies whatsoever. We could have put our name in the list and got seated in less than 30 minutes but instead we waited for more than an hour, and to make things worse, they seated our family in two separate tables. I was so annoyed by this time, and we said like sure, that's fine. We were so hungry by this time. Ok the review, the place is cute with fake trees inside. Decent size, not a huge place. I've eaten here a few times and the food is always just okay every time I go. But after this experience, never again. Venus Tam Cafe is way better or go next door, Hanoi Chicken noodle soup. I think two stars is being generous here! Improvement suggestions, they should tell people there's no reservations and it's first come first serve basis. Just put name on the list and they go in order. Also, I felt discriminated here because I feel like he was nicer to the Chinese families. The other times I have went, I was with a Chinese friend, and it was a more descent service.

This is one of our favorite Hong Kong cafes we go to! It's close to where we live so we often go for lunch/dinner. The location has a lot of seatings and it's always busy here. Although the service is always quick! The portions are big here so I can never finish a meal by myself. They have a huge menu and lots of variety of food to choose from. My favorite is the baked spaghetti and the HK milk tea. Definitely stop by here if you're around!

Always loved the interior. This time tried the Fukien Fried Rice and the Crispy Noodle Beef Stew on Iron Plate. Service as fast and accurate.

One of my girlfriends told me this place was good so I gave it a try since I was in the area. Right when I entered I noticed the 2 huge faux tree that they have inside which I thought was really interesting and cool. It made me feel like I eas sitting outside lol. I originally came for Hainan chicken but saw that that had salt and pepper wings so I ordered that too since I came with a big appetite. You can order full or half order of the Hainan chicken but it was only me so I order the rice plate option, which was the perfect portion for me. There were 6 salt and pepper chicken wings in the order. My bill was $37 with tip, not bad.

Love this place! We tried the hainan whole chicken, eel clay pot, wonton soup, beef chow fun, and the strawberry milk. Everything was so good, no complaints! The atmosphere is so nice, very modern, clean, welcoming. The food was hot, fresh and delicious. We will be back

Solid HK style cafe in San Leandro. Stopped by around 6 on a Saturday and the restaurant was packed. Very clean and modern interior compared to the typical older places in Chinatown. We ordered the Fukien fried rice, fish soup with pickled greens, and beef cube. The Fukien fried rice was my favorite-good ratio of gravy to rice with ample meat toppings with great flavor. The fish soup had a unique taste and came with ample fish too. The beef cube had well seasoned stew meat-just wish the cube was more crispy since it was mostly soft (family had come here before and said it was super crispy the last time). Otherwise, excited to come back to try other dishes here!

Baby café is one of my friends and I favorite late night cafés to go to for really yummy Asian food. I almost always ordered the baked pork chop, which is essentially a baked pork chop with rice and this cheesy tomato sauce. It's oven baked so it's piping hot. It's so good. Just note that if you order this dish and any of the other baked or sizzling dishes that it's gonna take a little bit longer usually 20 minutes at least. Would highly recommend for late night Hong Kong food. It's also really aesthetic as you can tell by the photos. Very cute vibes.

I have been on a HK cha chaan teng streak lately, so when we were visiting my hometown back in December, I noticed there was a HK cafe close by in the next town over. It was a Monday, so thankfully it wasn't too busy for lunch, and we were seated right away. I always try to practice my Cantonese whenever I visit any HK cafes, and this was no different. The staff were friendly, and I started off by ordering their signature iced baby milk tea, which comes in a cute little cup with ice shaped in baby form. It was authentic and strong, just as I like my HK milk tea. We were also served hot tea upon arrival. The 海南雞飯 was really catching my eye, especially after I had seen multiple people review the dish, so that's what I decided on for lunch. Meanwhile, my husband ordered the beef stew noodle soup. While we waited, we enjoyed the ambiance of the restaurant, with its tall ceilings and bright interior. I loved the addition of the foliage as well. My 海南雞飯 was plated beautifully. I especially liked that there was plenty of ginger and scallion oil for me to coat my chicken in. I've been to restaurants where I run out before I finish my chicken. The peanuts were deliciously crispy and salty, and the rice was flavorful. The chicken itself was cold, smooth, and slightly gelatinous, which I didn't mind. The cucumbers were a nice touch on the side too. My husband's beef stew noodle soup came with a small bowl, so he served me some. It had a nice depth of flavor, and the beef was tender. The egg noodles were bouncy and delightful. Overall, we had a solid experience at Baby Cafe, and I would definitely return to try some other dishes they offer (one of them being the Hainan chicken noodle soup)!

This is one of the best hainan chicken places I've been to. The food is spectacular, also have tried the wonton, the beef noodle soup, everything on the menu looks delicious. Service is speedy and the environment is cozy. 10/10 would recommend

Baked pork chop

Great HK food. Great HK service. Baby cafe has been a go to restaurant for the last year for family gatherings and it is still going strong. The tables are packed during meal hours and very relaxed with a few tables off-hours and late night. My go to has been the baked pork chop over spaghetti in red sauce and cheese (I would love to hear the origination story of this dish if anyone has it). A fried egg comes customary with the dish so there's no more side ordering a fried egg and taking a 50/50 chance if it shows up like at other unmentioned restaurants.Other house favorites include the bibimbap and fried tofu. The newer meat rice cubes on the menu are no joke--I say get one to share--either the curry chicken or stewed beef are winners.

This place has been in San Leandro for a year now and we finally had the chance to try it! It's on the side of the plaza and I had never noticed this was its location. Anywho we came on christmas eve eve for lunch and it was a busy parking lot with nearly every seat filled in this restaurant. The interior is modern and comfortable, perfect for taking pictures as they have a classic neon lights for their restaurant name, two decorative trees in the center along with other nice pieces. We were intrigued by the menu and ordered the beef brisket with crispy noodles and egg, a char siu with eggs and rice, crispy pork chop, fried squid, baked rice with eel and shrimp and a milk tea. Each dish punched above their weight and impressed. Everything was quite tender and made to perfection. The food comes out immediately. Service can be a wait as there were only two servers in a full restaurant so it took a long time to flag someone for the bill and another lengthy wait for someone to charge the card. All in all, a valuable addition to the local food places in San Leandro!

Beef stew noodle soup.

Came here on a Friday night. It was decently busy, but we were seated immediately, which was a pleasant surprise. We ordered the baked pork chop, beef noodle soup, Hainan chicken rice and an iced milk tea. The portions were really big, which I appreciated. The baked curry pork chop was just okay, neither dry nor particularly juicy, just average overall. The beef noodle soup was good, and the milk tea was up to standard. Service was quick but not very friendly. There was no eye contact and our order wasn't repeated back to us. The server gave the impression that he was a bit annoyed. The restaurant itself is aesthetically pleasing, decorated with fake trees and ample lighting.

It has been a VERY long time since we ate here. Actually, the previous time was with the previous owners/business. Today we got the following: Fish Ball Noodle Soup with Pho Noodles - Of course my daughter's choice and with NO veggies?!?! This looked so plain... I know I could have made this better at home! My wife shared some of her wontons with my daughter to add to the flavor. See pictures. I am sure this is NOT what my daughter had in mind when she craved Pho. This was much more of a "Chinese" dish rather than Vietnamese. Update - My daughter mentioned that she could not find regular thinly sliced beef pho as an option. And she thought fish balls were beef balls... Wonton Noodle Soup - Also as plain as my daughter's dish. Again, more of a Chinese dish rather than Vietnamese. #24 Fried Pork Chop, Chicken, Egg with Steamed Rice - Fried fresh and perfectly done! My pork chop and chicken were 5 stars! Everything else was just okay. Ambiance - Very small local business. Decent size parking lot, but not enough spaces for this busy mall. We got lucky and got a space fairly close to the restaurant. Not stressed as we planned to shop at Foodnet after lunch. Service - Had to ask for everything. Hard to get their attention as they just hung around the first booth talking and talking and talking. The hardest worker was the runner, probably the only employee that was not family...? Price - $66 + more generous tip than deserved or earned. Owner Comment - Congrats on your success at this location since 2024. And your previous location in Oakland, etc. The previous location was known for their chicken, chicken noodle soup, etc.

I'm a regular here, and I've frequented other Hong Kong style cafes all over East and South Bay…read more This is still my personal favorite. On this visit, I ordered the Black Pepper Beef Pen (Pan) Fried Spaghetti, Baked Minced Meat Spaghetti, Salt & Pepper Chicken Wings, Egg Puff, and a whole Hainan chicken for takeout. The Black Pepper Beef Pan Fried Spaghetti is one of my staple orders. They are very consistent with the noodle texture and flavor, and it usually comes out very quickly. The Baked Minced Meat Spaghetti is my go to HK comfort food, and the version here is my favorite. It is on the "drier" side compared to other spots, with more focus on the ground beef and onions instead of sauce. As a carnivore, I also appreciate that there are no vegetables mixed in. The cheese layer on top is always solid. The Salt & Pepper Chicken Wings are very good about 90 percent of the time. Crispy on the outside and juicy and tender inside. The other 10% of the time, they do overcook a bit every now and then, but I'll give them a pass. The Egg Puff is not always perfect in terms of texture or appearance, but the flavor is consistent and I like to end my meal with it as a nice dessert. Service is attentive when they are not too busy. On this visit, they kept my water topped up and brought extra napkins without me asking after noticing I had used mine up. Overall, Baby Cafe continues to be my go to for Hong Kong comfort food. Not perfect every time, but consistent enough that I keep coming back.
