Baked Curry Pork Chop over Rice
Andre C.

An incredibly charming HK cafe with a fun atmosphere. As far as HK cafes in the Bay Area go, Baby Cafe un Union City nail the experience by offering a clean and modern take. There's plenty of booths, green decor, and ordering is through your phone via QR code. I'm a sucker for baked HK dishes, and the curry pork chop and baked eel & shrimp plates did not disappoint. The service was also very quick and above average for Asian establishments (it's still a Chinese restaurant, let's be real here). I definitely found my go-to HK cafe!

It is still a very good place for Hong Kong style casual cafe foods/beverages/snacks/desserts. Prices are still decent in the $15-$20 range/more or less for main items. Desserts and beverages are legit. Glad to see more employees inside on Saturdays. They were busy throughout the end of lunch hour too. Lady server/manager was attentive and employees are hardworking/nonstop hustling. Menu still offered wide selections with many great choices. Noodles/soups, sizzling plates, BBQ meats, fried rice, chicken wings, sandwiches, pastas, bibimbap, etc. We never get tired of coming here. Sizzling chicken steak combo is always generous in portion sizes and delicious. The combo comes with beverage of your choice. They always give you more pepper steak sauce here. My Tom Yum seafood soup noodle bowl was good too. Lots of shrimp and tomatoes for sure. They always give you complimentary hot tea. Food presentation and taste are good here. Note, lines are usually very long on weekends during prime hours, but the waitlist sign up is worth it. This place is definitely for Hong Kong food lovers. Snacks in the $10 range all looks absolutely delicious here. Bonus: yes, they also accept AMEX credit cards now.

Their curry fish balls is the one to beat. The curry sauce is delicious and not too spicy. Their fish balls are "bouncy". First time trying their hand-shredded chicken. It's excellent and the meat is piled high on the plate. They put the bones at the bottom to stack up the meat. We at least don't need to deal with bones. Their XO sauce stirred fried rice stick noodles with pork cheek is good too. It's tasty with XO sauce and the noodles are well stirred fried without sticking together. This dish originally came with chow fun and you can stick with it. We just prefer the thinner noodles. This place opens all day long and doesn't close between lunch and dinner. You don't need to worry about they'll kick you out to close after lunch time. Bathroom could have been cleaned better, minus one star for it

STARTED W/ HAINAN CHICKEN One of my top ten favorite foods in the world is Hainan chicken and rice or the Cantonese version bai qie ji. This dish is subtle in presentation yet packed with flavor with the cold, poached chicken and ginger-scallion sauce. I love the ginger-scallion sauce as dipping sauce for the poached chicken. Little did I know the difference between Hainan chicken and rice and bai qie ji until I ate at Baby Cafe. The first time I came here was for lunch to order the Hainan chicken rice. The chicken was moist. The ginger-scallion sauce was flavorful. What stood out was the rice. For any Hainan chicken or bai qie ji I've eaten the rice was steamed. The rice at Baby Cafe for the Hainan chicken was flavored. The oil rice made the Hainan chicken stood out. I found the difference between Hainan chicken and bai qie ji is the rice is flavored. The second I order was Hong Kong-style butter toast. I've eaten Hong Kong toast at other places where the toast was just bland. However at Baby Cafe the Hong Kong toast surprised with a texture French toast. On my first visit I loved the two dishes that I'm not sure if I can order them again at another restaurant. There are more dishes than just the Hainan chicken at Baby Cafe. My second visit here I wanted to order a pork chop rice as it's another dish Baby Cafe is known for. I didn't just want to order a regular baked chop rice as I've eaten at other Hong Kong-style cafes. I order a baked curry pork chop rice. When it comes to curry I like Thai or Japanese. I'm not a fan of Indian curry as I find it heavy and earthy for my taste. I'm not familiar with curry in Chinese food. The second item I ordered was the hot honey chicken wings. When the pork chop curry arrived I expected the curry to heavy. The curry wasn't thick nor runny. The sauce was light that you can taste the seasoning. On the other hand even though the hot honey chicken wings were flavorful the meat was too crispy fit my liking. The third time I came here was for a late lunch. I ordered sweet and sour pork chop. I also ordered a bowl of steamed rice. For this visit I wanted dessert so I ordered mango queendom, which I never had before. The sweet and sour pork was flavorful, but not specular as I expected the breading to be crispy. As I never ate mango queendom I expected it to be thick when the dish was served. This dessert was light and not too sweet. The mango queendom was like a refreshing drink. When I go back to Baby Cafe I'll order different items. However if I am really craving for Hainan chicken then I'll to Baby Cafe with no hesitation.

This is a Hong Kong style cafe with a little fusion . There are a lot of cafe from Taiwan , China , Vietnam , Japan , etc . Only a de are authentic Hong Kong style cafe in the U.S.A. . They are more common in Canada. Inside seating is comfortable and well lighted. I like the nature theme with a green wall and the other side is flamingo and palm trees. A light music is playing all the time . There are two TV displays with captions . Menu is extensive. One of the most popular dishes are Hoi Nam chicken , stewed beef and tendons, curry and HK style snacks & desserts. Today I ordered the beef stone pot porridge. It is EXTREMELY hot when served . It was prepared inside the stone pot so that it can keep the temperature the whole time . It is also more healthy to eat with non plastic containers when food is cooked in high temperature. Plenty of beef inside the pot ( 10 good sized pieces ) . The consistency of the congee is just right . It is a little too bland for my taste , so I ask the waiter to give me some soy sauce and white pepper to make it taste better. I would rather it is not too salty so I can adjust it to my liking. Ambience is nice . Good service . A huge parking lot by the front door . There are a lot of other restaurants that share the same parking lot . It is hard to get a space on Saturday and Sunday. Weekday afternoon is usually fine . The menu has so many options: baked food , stir fried rice or vegetables, chicken , beef , seafood . Pan fry noodles or rice . Desserts , smoothie and fruit teas . I have tried most of the items and they are pretty good .

Wonton Soup

Very mediocre HK cafe chinese food. Everything was very bland and tasted mostly of salt and/or MSG. The best dish had to be the salt & pepper shishamo which was crispy and decently well seasoned. The baked seafood spaghetti wasn't bad either but a really small portion for the price. Wonton soup tasted like salty lettuce water, the string beans w beef were a bit undercooked, and the japanese tofu tasted like corn starch slurry over tofu. Overall, mediocre and not a place I'd be willing to return to. Bare minimum service of serving the food, but otherwise it was self order. Cute cozy casual ambience though.

牛腩捞麵 Beef Stew Dry Noodle with crispy noodle and egg on top ( comes with beverage)

My first time here and it is cozy with booths so four of us sat in a booth and then menu is so extensive with great photos of the food so it took us a few minutes to decide what to eat. Service was attentive and we ordered the beef stew crispy noodles and fried egg on top that comes with a beverage, 2 of us had the Hainan chicken noodle soup and fried spaghetti with beef. Portions are humongous and delish!

铁板牛腩脆面 Sizzling Beef Stew Crispy Noodle

Sadly through the years this cafe has gone down hill in a major way. Decor is pretty, always enjoyed eating there. But service was not good. Ordered a sizzling steak which is a usual go to for us here, only to be told 30 minutes into waiting that it was unavailable. Then had to wait 20 more minutes for them to make us a black pepper beef noodle that was not very good with no black pepper flavor. We also ordered the sizzling beef stew noodle which was decent, however very salty. The sizzling plate wasn't even hot. Sad to see that the overall quality and service has declined so much from before.

The food is terrific here. The service is good. And it is a very small venue so very personal feeling. I wanted to update the review I made as I was a bit disappointed with the high-touch restroom experience where they have followed the trend of removing all paper towels, which I am fine with if the touching of things is not necessary. For example, a foot opener for the door, and automatic soap and water on/off. Too easy to spread viruses and dirt when you have to pull the door open after washing. Otherwise, an awesome place!

First time trying this place. It's a relatively small cafe located in a convenient strip mall near marina grocery and daiso. We were a group of 9 but luckily only had to wait ~20 minutes. Style of food is HK cafe type with things like baked rice and spaghetti dishes. The hainan chicken seems to be popular too. I had the baked pork chop spaghetti which came with a fried egg. Be prepared that the baked dishes do take a bit longer. Portions were relatively large and good flavor. Others in our group enjoyed the half shredded chicken and other baked dishes. Staff were friendly and helpful. Easy parking. Would definitely come back to try other dishes.

My family and I recently ordered takeout from Baby Cafe, and to put it simply, the food exceeded all my expectations. I've been to the Baby Cafe location at the Emeryville Public Market before, but the Union City spot is on another level. For our group of four, we ordered the dry beef chow fun, Hainan chicken, and baked pork chop rice. Every dish was spectacular--easily some of the best I've had in the Bay. The Hainan chicken was incredibly tender, with not a single dry piece in the entire dish. It was so flavorful on its own that it didn't even need the ginger scallion sauce (though the sauce was great too). It's clear the chicken was carefully prepared because there was not a single bone shards to be found. The beef chow fun stood out with its unmistakable "wok hei" flavor -- that smoky, slightly charred essence that comes from being cooked over high heat in a wok. As for the baked pork chop rice, the sauce was nicely balanced--not too sweet, not too sour. We also got an great cut of pork chop, with just the right amount of fat and no tough tendons. If you're craving Hong Kong classics, Baby Cafe in Union City is a must-try.

Lav L.

We ordered 2 dishes and they are on the salty side. Will give it another try later. The other location of Baby cafe is not as salty.

Heidi C.

Food came out quick. Well taken cared of. Ordered two dishes. Beef stew with noodles: the broth was flavorful and meat was tender. Baked pork chop with noodles: the sauce was a sweet tomato sauce topped with a fried egg. There was plenty noodles, but I thought the pork chop was mid-tender. Still giving it 5 stars because I still enjoyed my food.

Great first impression after so many years. Authentic Hong Kong foods. If you're coming from the South Bay Area, this place doesn't disappoint. We don't have very good Cantonese HK style cafes that serve good A/B/C/D/etc. breakfasts and most places are overpriced. Good value for good foods here. I paid $16 with taxes included for B-breakfast, so I left them $4 tips. $16 for everything was considered cheap! I had french fries/hash brown/two eggs/chicken steak/broccoli/carrot/etc. and comes with hot beverage of choice. Very fulfilling. Delicious foods with authentic drinks. Everything was generous in portions and delicious, so I ate the entire plate of foods along with my hot cup HK milk tea. No leftovers. Yummy! I'm really loving their big breakfasts now. I do miss all the good and affordable Hong Kong cafe foods. Having excellent service is a plus. Television was turned on with HK news. The overall flavor profile was balanced and comforting without feeling overloaded with MSG. The egg tofu was light and nicely seasoned, and the fried rice delivered that classic Hong Kong café vibe.
