My husband and I try to avoid going to Joe's Pho because of their prices. We know their food is good, but we just can't justify $20+ for a bowl of pho, INSANE! We were in the area and it has been years since we ate at the original one, probably since they first opened. So since its been so long, we thought we would stop in this newer location for a quick lunch on a Monday afternoon. They were fairly busy, but service was still great. We were greeted and seated right away. Our order was taken in a timely manner. We ordered the Oxtail pho, banh mi xiu mai, bot chien, and an avocado smoothie. Our food came out pretty quick minus the bot chien which the server said usually takes awhile. Oxtail pho was as good as we remember. Oxtail was fall off the bone, actually, all the meats in the pho were very tender, which we love. Banh mi xiu mai was all right. I felt like something was missing, but I can't figure out what it is. Flavor was there, but maybe too much egg for my liking or sauce was not thick enough. Overall, I would pass on this one. Bot chien is something I always get if I see it on the menu. I love mines crispy, and this was indeed crisppppy!!! I would get it again. Avocado smoothie was decent, I wish it were colder, but even after putting it in the fridge, it still never got cold. Strange. They offer a quite a few things for dine in customers. They have complimentary shrimp chips, che, pandan waffle, and even fruits. I guess that can make up for the expensive food. I wouldn't frequent going to Joe's, but I guess we don't have to avoid going there either. We can splurge for some good pho once in awhile. I ordered a regular "pho train" (special combo noodle soup). It took 25 minutes to be served. At the time, the restaurant was not busy. Most other customers who arrived after me had already received their food before my bowl arrived. I understand that some preparation time is expected, but 25 minutes for a regular pho order under light traffic seems longer than typical. A simple heads-up about the wait time would have been helpful. This is not about taste, but about service consistency and communication. Ok this might be the best pho place I've been to.. I got the regular size filet mignon pho and spring rolls. The beef just tastes different, it's soft, not over cooked or rough to chew on. I saw that they have the 3 color drink on the menu and most pho restaurants don't even sell them anymore. I ordered a coke with ice this time but definitely getting the 3 colored drink next time!! Cold rainy days call for warm soup and comfort food. We found ourselves at Joe's Pho for dinner where no reservations are necessary and seating is plenty. It takes a lot for service to tick me off. On this rare occasion, I was quite incensed. I was craving pho when I was down with a bad case of flu, and ordered oxtail combo pho. So you know it's the fancier kind of pho. It was really good too, with fantastic broth, delicious meat, and it was hitting the spot and alleviating my symptoms. Waitress was super nice, brought me hot tea, and the pho came out super quick after I ordered. Everything went smoothly....until I wasn't even halfway done with my bowl when I got up to go use the restroom. As I started to walk to the bathroom, I noticed the busboy went to my table and dumped trash into my bowl. I don't think I've ever been incensed with waitstaff like this. As if I were a screeching car, I made a U-turn straight back to my table and told him I wasn't even done with my lunch yet. My bowl was clearly still half-full with noodles, broth, some meat and veggies, and I was even saving the tastiest parts for last, such as tendon, one of my favorite things to eat when I order pho. It was THE GOOD STUFF, and I didn't even get to eat that! I grew up in an immigrant household, and we don't believe in wasting food. Staff all seem to be immigrants, so they should understand. Busboy's excuse was so lame, and mumbled something like, "I didn't know, you just walked away." He got the hostess, and then the hostess got the manager, and their excuses were also pathetic. They said, "If you need to go to the bathroom, you should have just told us." Excuse me, I'm not some school kid who needs to ask for permission from the teacher to go to the bathroom. This is a large restaurant, I'm a solo diner, and I'm sure they have better things to do than to keep track of customers going to the restroom. If I haven't paid for a meal, and my food isn't finished, it should be safe to assume I'm still working on it. I was really upset at them, and at least they let me go without making me pay. Normally I'd feel bad for being that angry with restaurant staff, but in this case they needed an earful. They made stupid moves, they shouldn't expect me to remain polite. I've dined solo on many, many occasions, and I have NEVER had my food dumped prematurely like that. I guess I've just been lucky. Or in this case, unlucky. Their flour cake we tried was so nostalgic for me, bringing back memories of a Vietnamese restaurant I used to frequent with my family in the South Bay as a child and teen, then with friends in a South Sac location of that same restaurant during my college days. Not all Vietnamese restaurants serve this dish, so I was excited to see the vivid photo of the flour cake that caught my eye on their menu! My mom had a culinary clever idea to use lettuce to turn it into a flour cake lettuce wrap, since we already had lettuce leaves with our entrees. This plus the salty and sweet sauce made me devour the flour cakes! This is a must try when you're at Joe's Pho! For my entree, I chose their filet mignon pho. It was a cold and rainy evening, so it was a perfect choice to warm my soul. Due to the spacious style of this restaurant, even with large parties, the ambiance is never too loud and you can speak to each other without shouting, which is one of the reasons we enjoy dining here. Being able to dine with comfortable spacing is a plus! Also, as usual, since we are frequent diners here, the servers who know us took care of us. We go here a lot because my father-in-law's nursing home is walking distance and we can wheel him over in the wheelchair easily. The portions are more than enough and we usually get the pho while my father-in-law always goes all out and orders something big and fancy. The 3 stars is mostly because it's not the best pho I've ever had and the other things we order like the basil popcorn chicken and the fried wontons for my kid are super subpar. The popcorn chicken's texture is questionable. Service is fine; they're usually pretty quick. My main gripe about this place is cleanliness and ambiance: there's always flies flying around much to the dismay of my little one and the music is SO unnecessarily loud. My partner and I went to Joe's Pho to get some food because we do like their food. We've always brought my task trained service dog with us and it's never been an issue. However, tonight we had an issue with the service dog. They asked for his certification or ID which in the USA, there are none. The employees insisted there's ID's and I showed them the laws off of the ADA's website. I showed them the 2 questions they may ask and was very polite about it the whole time explaining the laws and also saying I'm a dog trainer and my partner is an Animal Control Officer. (I'm used to getting questions from restaurants about this and I always try to calmly educate in a light manner.) They then tried to seat us in the back away from everyone else because of this. My partner said we were fine where we were because we didn't want to face more discrimination. So their response was to say they were refusing to serve us because of the service dog. I asked for the manager or supervisor and I was told they were not on sight. They did not want to provide further information than that. A complaint has been filed with the ADA and also has been reported to the San Leandro Police Department and Animal Control. I hope they will review the laws regarding service animals so no one else with an actual service dog has to go through this. I like that the addition of shrimp did not cost extra compared to if you only get chicken. And I appreciate the veggies for a more balanced meal. Came to this place because me and my best friend wanted some Pho. The service was extremely horrible. I do not recommend this place, they weren't busy at all and they had the worst staff they weren't nice. They didn't make us feel welcomed, and we had to keep asking them for stuff since they wouldn't come and check on us. But they were very tentative to the other guests. We had to ask them to refill our water. Just not a good experience and I hardly ever make a bad review but this one server in particular had a very rude demeanor and you could tell that he was annoyed with us and didn't want us there. Place is huge, I kept trying to remember what was the previous business prior to Joe's taking over, was it Payless shoes or beauty/wig shop??? Having lived in SL for 15 yrs, can't blame a girl for trying to recall. Lol Moving on, similar layout to Joe's original location. Menu offers usual pho place affairs and a good variety of drinks. I opted for young coconut juice and it was refreshing with 2 large slices of actual coconut. I ordered Vermicelli w/grilled pork, portion was generous and very nicely presented. Pork had good flavor, tasty. My table mate had regular size rib pho, meat was tender and soup tasty, nothing to complain about. The only item that wasn't on point was the chicken wings, it was bland, needed more time to absorb marinate. Other than that, the free shrimp chips were good as the free pandan dessert that comes with, yummm! All in all, good option for Pho around SL. This has been a staple pho restaurant for us. The prices keep going up and menu keeps changing but in general, you get what you pay for as the meat portions are generous here. There was a period when tip was included into the bill but that seems to be removed now. All of the phos are good and the fried chicken appetizer is also tasty. Sometimes when I don't want pho I'll get a bun, which is also filling. It's a large restaurant, so it's great for large parties and there's always a seat whenever you come in. There's a tv on every wall usually playing sports, so it can be a distraction from your dining experience. There's also usually music playing, sometimes too loud. Food comes out fast and servers are usually quick to respond. Sometimes they'll give out free desserts like fruit cocktail or three colors of life or coconut milk rice pudding.
