I came to lunch the other day with my younger brother. This is a small Vietnamese style restaurant with a lot of heart. Small place with good food. I ordered the tofu style fresh spring roll. It came with a peanut sauce within the roll of itself. It had freshly fried tofu which impressed me and inside it was solid with a crunchy spring roll like thing in the middle in, which gives it a great texture. The second dish I order was their vermicelli noodle bowl with tofu. I asked the waiter to give me peanut sauce on the side instead of the soy sauce type of sauce. I believe the waiter mistaken me to have the tofu stirfry in peanut sauce in which they did that was completely no complaint there for me it made the much more delicious. Overall, I added my classic hoisin sauce and Sriracha onto the vermicelli noodle bowl mix and tossed it together to have a delicious noodle salad type dish. It was light and delicious and had all the flavors and they hit all the right notes. My brother got the number one combination bowl. He said that food was quite delicious. The soup was OK. He said it was heavily seasoned with spices, but not much of a beef bone flavor. But his bowl he said it was quite good with the meat portions overall fresh, raw beef, steaks, beef, brisket, beef, tendon, tripe, beef balls, and usually plate of veggies that come with PHO . He said it was pretty good for a small restaurant. One thing I noticed was there were tons of people that came in and out especially doing takeout orders so I believe this place does pretty decent business. We went to after lunch about 2:30PM and shockingly there was tons of to go orders and about 4 table of people on a Tuesday. It was our first time here and upon sitting down at our table, we noticed that there were a lot of regulars so we knew this was going to be a good place. It was nice to see that the host was also taking good care and regularly checking up on people. Now come to the food, we got the tofu pho, tofu vermicelli bowl, and tofu banh mi, all of which were excellent. It was my first time trying their garlic noodles with Korean-style short ribs (galbi), and it was delicious. The noodles were thick and chewy with a rich, garlicky, buttery flavor. The short ribs were excellent. They were perfectly seasoned and incredibly tender. This is one of our favorite local spots for lunch or dinner. I usually get the shrimp vermicelli but have also had their egg banh mi, shrimp spring roll, fried shrimp's. Pro Tip: If you are ordering togo, ask for your noodles and meats to be raw and uncooked. That way you can heat things up yourself when you get home and assemble it like how the restaurants would. Cook the noodles in a separate pot to desired hardness and then use that same pot to cook the meat before assembling and pouring in the broth. For starters you can do so easily via doordash but if you truly want to support a local business/mom and pop shop, you can call directly to their restaurant and order there directly. The gentleman on the phone was nice, a little rough around the edges but if you are Vietnamese, he's your typical uncle. Don't let this deter you from great food. I ordered five pho tai's and they were packaged within 10 minutes like he told me over the phone. By the time I got there it was ready for me on the table. Perfect for if you are feeling sick and also being considerate of other people's health. As for the food, holy moly it was such generous portions. Plenty of noodles, a huge bag of veggies and ample amounts of filet. The pho broth was piping hot and didn't even need to be heated up. It not only smelled good, it tasted good. Im glad I gave this place a try because now I have two solid locations in separate areas of the East Bay. Parking lot is spacious, restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating, and their pho passes my litmus test for being solid and dependable. Compared to the Tri-Valley, I think San Leandro has a larger and better selection of Vietnamese restaurants. We frequented Saigon House for lunch twice and both times the food was excellent. Service is quick and efficient, and there's plenty of seating inside and outside. Another plus is that they have two clean unisex bathrooms in the back next to the kitchen. I recommend: * Garlic noodles with grilled chicken - Sounds simple but this is true comfort food. Thin, chewy round noodles with tons of ginger-garlic-scallion flavors and some seriously juicy chicken meat. *Grilled pork over rice - The texture of the pork seems ground to me, so its more like a pork satay as compared to say, pork loin. If you want a chewier texture, get the pork chop instead. The flavor of the pork are a good balance of gingery and salty, and the soft texture makes the dish toddler friendly too. *I like how you can mix and match side items to add some more protein: grilled chicken, grilled pork, pork chop, Kalbi, or in our case, some crispy fish cakes with that sweet-sour dipping sauce. * For Pho, my wife liked #19 which has all the beefy items while leaving out the tripe and tendon. This is my family's go to Vietnamese restaurant :) the owner, George, always remembers most of our orders. He's always welcoming, friendly and a light hearted joker. I liked watching him make commentary on the news with my dad. We asked him what they did for the holidays and he said he was busy working! Appreciate that he wants to stay open for business not only for himself but for the customers. Their garlic noodles are really tasty and flavorful. Not too much garlic. While this place is primarily a good to for Pho, they have good cheap banh mi and vermicelli dishes. It was getting over a cold so went over to dine in. The cold also had me not eating for a couple days so my eyes were bigger than my stomach. For pho Im a fan of meatballs and cooked beef flank. So I ordered that with extra meat ball. I also ordered their grilled chicken banh mi. I love this spot because its a Mom and Pop run restaurants and the Dad is hilarious, a little snarky sometimes They are also efficient, however on cold days and lunch hours I recommend you come early to avoid the rush or between 2-6. The broth is so good, and the crunch on the banh mi bread is great. I managed to get through the soup AND half the sandwich. In the summer time I get their vermicelli which is warm rice noodles with meat, shredded lettuce, carrots etc and choice of spring roll. I heard a lot of great things about some of my favorite dishes, and yes they definitely do have a good menu so I will definitely be back to try many more dishes. What an amazing Vietnamese Restaurant hidden inside San Leandro! It was my first time visiting and I wanted to try the extensive menu they have at Saigon House. I met the owner George and his wife. They are a lovely, hard working couple that have been running this restaurant for 12 years. So I ordered a few items: Ribs and beef pho: the broth here is very flavorful and needs no add-one like sriracha or hoisin sauce, just the basil, bean sprouts, jalapeños, and the homemade chili sauce they have is more than enough. One of the best pho in the Bay and the price is also very low compared to other pho spots. Garlic Noodles: the noodles were bouncy and firm. The noodles had a wonderful garlicky oyster saucy flavor along with grilled chicken on top. Banh Mi: this was good but I think next time I would ask for no sweet sauce, maybe just some mayonnaise if they have it. Fresh pork rolls: excellent appetizer along with the peanut sauce. Wings with fish sauce: I usually like my wings naked but in this case, I loved the sticky sweet and savory sauce they added on the wings. Very delicious. Vermicelli noodles: this was a large portion of noodles, veggies, meat, egg roll, etc. this combo along with the fish sauce makes for a very satisfying meal. The service is great. Normally I wouldn't write reviews for a place that has so many already, but I noticed that *nobody* has talked about their shaken beef yet, so I am here to remedy that. The restaurant is small but cozy, full of fake plants all over, with old wallpaper that make it feel like someone's auntie's house. Food is top notch. Especially the shaken beef. They don't call it that, they call it cubed steak or something, though the Viet name, bo luc lac, is unmistakeable. I can't definitively say whether it was the standard filet mignon or not, though the steak was quite tender for the most part. It included all of what I'd expect it to: beef, onions, green and red bell peppers, delicious garlicky sauce. Which is not a given, as I've had this dish at every Viet restaurant that will sell it to me and the only guarantee is the beef. This restaurant also included a little dish of a lemon pepper sauce for dipping, which is unusual for this dish but greatly appreciated! It was delicious to alternate between normal bites and lemon-dipped bites, and I was a bit sad when I went for another bite and realized I'd finished the plate.
