A fantastic find! Came to Hayward for marketplace pickup and met up with friends who live in the area. They never went to Le Paradis and we wanted to go somewhere our baby would enjoy - hence - noodle soup and Vietnamese food came to mind. Alas we got here and the parking lot in the back was empty... we walked in and it was empty and this lovely lady greeted us and told us to sit wherever we wanted and moved flowers aside to give us the bigger table. They had high chairs which was great! Divey vibes with display cases of baked goods and some potted flowers and plants - cozy! My hubs looked at the menu and made eye contact with our friends and said "uhoh - all english menu has me nervous. Pretty Empty. Nervous." Then the lady who greeted us - she joyfully came out with a bowl of chicken pho and noodles for our baby and said "I take your order but baby can eat first!" - she was so thoughtful and sweet and the bowl was perfect! Bits of chicken and noodles and clear broth... my baby loved it! She took our orders and the food came! I got the BanhXeo and it was big and full of chicken and some shrimps some sprouts and onions and the crepe had such great coconut flavor and texture. My hubs liked his Bun Bo Hue and our friends enjoyed the vermicelli noodle dish as well. As we sat and enjoyed the goodness of our meal that was when the traffic steadily moved through - saw about 7 to 8 different folks walking in and making orders and waiting for their meal and leaving - and some pick ups. It turned out to be a very busy restaurant. The kind lady - she then came back to our table after the dinner rush of to go orders were through - she chatted our table up some and she was telling us that she was the baker and gave us a small bag of macaroons. Her name is Alice and she is so kind. She mentioned that lunch can be very very busy because of the workforce coming through - but I'm glad we were there for dinner and got a nice laugh and conversation with her... the outside was filled with pots of flowers and plants lined along the parking lot and she had some outdoor cats just nestled in the plants. It's been a long while since my last visit so taking food delivery to try their food again was my opportunity. I have been craving for banh seo (crepe) and few places offer it. So today was my lucky day. My order consists of fresh spring roll of grilled pork and shrimp and the banh seo. The food was delivered sooner than anticipated time. Kudos to the kitchen and food delivery driver. The crepe was delivered hot and crispy with all the accompany lettuce, basil and mint leaves, and pickled carrot and daikon; and fish sauce. There were plenty of pork and bean sprouts as compared to the shrimp. With warm crispy crepe skin was a certain sweetness and crunch. And with the fresh spring had the unique ingredient of grilled pork along with the usual shrimp. I found the pork to be a nice twist. I've driven past this place for years but never tried it until recently! I stopped by with a friend for a late lunch/early dinner around 4:30 on a Saturday and it wasn't too busy. One of my favorite Vietnamese places. It's been here for as long as I can remember. It's one of those places that I don't go to every day, but would be absolutely devastated if it ever disappeared. The food isn't flashy or fancy, with good portions. It feels like true Auntie food, and if you are lucky enough to have aunties who make food, you know how high praise that is. I love anything with their grilled pork (fresh spring rolls, vermicelli, anything!) and their vegetarian options are also great. She was so sweet and hard working. There is plenty of seating inside and no outdoor seating. There is a hidden parking lot in the back of the restaurant but you could also park across the street next to the park. We ordered a chicken vermicelli bowl with egg rolls. It was disgusting, The combo Banh mi was just pork cake and lots of home made pate, I should not have order this. Ordered on doordash for pick up, prices were on the higher side. I got the grilled chicken spring rolls, they were fresh and good I liked that it has mint but didn't get enough peanut sauce. My coworker got the grilled pork banh mi she said it was good but was not a fan of the bread. Also ordered the crunchy almond cookie, I really enjoyed it, has lots of almonds, nice crunch and not too sweet. The chocolate chip cookie said it was soft and chewy, but mine was hard and crunchy. No outdoor eating area as it is all taken up by potted plants. Not fancy, but seems to offer a variety of choices for dishes. Was craving a Vietnamese sandwich, the combination to be specific which is my hands-down my favorite. The sandwich was as expected with a crusty baguette stuffed with tender pork, pickled veggies, generous smear of pate and the Vietnamese meatloaf (whatever it's made of, don't tell me). The pate is incredibly savory. I grabbed the sandwich to go cause my pho craving got the better of me. Decisions are tough when you're hungry. Downtown Hayward was not a place I thought about much until I saw a recent episode of "Check, Please! Bay Area" where a Vietnamese restaurant was praised by the guests. The video segment got to me because owner Alice Nguyen was recounting her own story as a Vietnamese refugee raised in France and how she learned how to master patisserie at the same time she was learning her own cuisine. She also admitted she comes to the restaurant at 5AM and doesn't leave until 11PM. That's dedication. I saw evidence of her unwavering diligence when I paid the restaurant a late afternoon visit on a weekday. Unfortunately, rush hour traffic was especially horrendous as I later found out a street festival was happening at the same time. I tucked into the last open spot in a parking structure and dodged speeding cars to come over. Alice looked to be the only one working at the front of the restaurant, so I sat at one of the small tables next to the window. She came by right away with a menu and some ice water. The menu was quite comprehensive and took a while for a first-timer to review. At the same time, I glanced over at the extensive display case that housed all her patisserie. I made a mental note to browse it when I was done with my meal. Speaking of which, I ordered one of the House Special Dishes, the $16.95 Vietnamese Crepe with Chicken and Shrimp where they made a large envelope of a crepe made of rice flour, crisped it on a grill, and stuffed it with bean sprouts and white onions as well as sautéed chicken and shrimp. It came with lettuce leaves, cucumber slices, and pickled carrots, but it was a bit awkward to turn the crepe into finger food (photo: https://bit.ly/3CEXkC2). Bottom line, the ingredients were right although the crepe was a tad too oily for my taste. Of course I ended up buying some of her baked goods to take home. I recently visited this restaurant, and while the service was pleasant--particularly the young woman who was helping us--it was not enough to make up for the disappointing quality of the food and especially the baked goods. Lunch was fine but not good. I ordered the Lemongrass Chicken Vermicelli, and my friend had the Chicken Teriyaki. Oddly, the chicken in both dishes was identical, marinated in something that turned the meat red. To make it "teriyaki," they simply poured sauce over the same chicken. This shortcut was quite obvious. It seemed like they were cutting corners by preparing one batch of chicken to use across multiple dishes, rather than properly cooking each dish according to its advertised flavor. It felt lazy on the restaurant's side. What really drove me to write this review, though, was the baked goods. With the rising cost of dining out, I expect that the food I purchase will be fresh. After our meal, I decided to try a few of their cookies, which were individually wrapped in plastic wrap--something that I should have paid more attention to. When I got home, I discovered they were extremely stale, inedible and maybe even a month old. If you're charging customers, selling baked goods that should have been thrown away is both shameful and a waste of our hard-earned money. They clearly know these items are past their prime since they individually wrap them in plastic to try to keep them fresh--but it doesn't work. It's far better to bake only what you can sell within a reasonable timeframe. Instead, it felt like another example of cutting corners--batch baking and then trying to pass off old items to customers simply because they don't sell quickly enough. I went here for lunch during the middle of the week in the afternoon with my S.O. since he was craving some banh mi. It wasn't too busy when we went, but there were customers coming into pick up their orders. Outside they have a little cute garden, and next to it is a parking lot for customers. Upon arrival, we were looking at the pastries and meringues in the display cases. The meringues were HUGE! However, I was turned off because I saw a fly just flying around and chilling on the meringues. I was grossed out and disappointed because a meringue sounded good to take back home. I ordered the #2 Combo, which includes a banh mi, your choice of appetizer and a soda. For $15, everything was pretty worth. When I walked in with my partner, we waited at the front like we usually do when we're picking an online order because sometimes workers need to confirm before you take your food. The older woman who assisted us asked about an egg roll order and insisted it was ours even though we gave a name for the order. After she was beginning to realize what we were communicating she looks at us as if we're saying the most confusing thing on earth after we repeated our online order. She proceeded to finally show us where our order was sitting and said "oh my god, you're so confusing" as we walked away at her rude comments, she continued to say "well because I did say egg roll...) still trying to excuse the rude treatment we received. Our first time here. Pretty good for the first time the they have all the basics of a Vietnamese restaurant with more intricate items to order off the menu. My husband had the sandwich and I had the Fried Rice. Both were equally good for both of us. The iced coffee was fantastic as well a bit strong but when you are out and about running errands you need a little pick me up. No alcohol is served here but there are plenty of sweets to take home which we did get a few. Service was great no problems and they were very accommodating for wheelchairs too since my husband is in one. This is just one of the other two Pho places that is in the vicinity and it was open on Easter as well. Grub hub didn't update me on when it was done so I called and was told my order was already ready. I ordered bun rieu, grilled chicken with shrimp and eggrolls, grilled pork chops with shrimp cake , grilled beef rolls with shrimp and eggrolls. The bun rieu wasn't very good. It's not that traditional. There's shrimp and regular soft tofu. And there's not much crab either. I heard the rice and vermicelli plates weren't that good either. Bought a variety of items - some I enjoyed more than others - so I advise to ask for help deciding or pick one of many different things. All items are on display and are very beautiful. Parking lot always seems to have many spots open - and easy to enter as it is on a side street. Small garden as you enter - lots of plants along the perimeter to sort of block off the buzzing traffic on the main street. I noticed some regulars from the nearby card room come in - which is a good sign. I really like Vietnamese sandwiches but I have not had one here for whatever reason. We had a really good conversation with Alice (the owner), she made us feel very comfortable and her garden it's very beautiful. Food it's super fresh, super good and very homemade flavors. Every bite you take makes you want to keep eating more and more. I usually don't finish the broth from pho but this one specifically was chef kiss so I had to finished it. I was impressed by the prices, really affordable and inexpensive comparing to other Vietnamese restaurants. They have really good combos.
