I recently ordered food at Jim's On the Course in Alameda and had a mixed experience. The staff was friendly and attentive, which I appreciated. Unfortunately, the food did not meet expectations. The chicken and waffles dish was disappointing--the chicken tasted dry and somewhat stale, and the waffle was overcooked and burnt. We also ordered the NY steak and specifically requested it be cooked with no pink, but it arrived with pink in the center. For dessert, the apple pie was dry and lacked flavor. Jim's On The Course is a nice place to sit down for a meal or drinks on the Corica Park golf course on Bay Farm Island. This place is of the same brand as the Jim's on the main island, on Lincoln Ave., off of Park St. Minutes away from Oakland Airport too, so a good place to grab breakfast before heading out of town. First and foremost, service is great. Friendly and attentive staff. Beautiful location overlooking the golf course green. They have a sizable patio covered by large umbrellas, a great place to hang out on a nice day. The food is good, standard breakfast/brunch and lunch fare, and I believe they serve breakfast all day. As my partner noted, the patio is reminiscent of the many outdoor cafes we used to spend time at in Eastern Europe, where people hang out relaxing, socializing and living life right. We have know about this place for years but just never made it here until today. It's a golf course restaurant that clearly caters to more than just golfers. Open from 7am to 7 pm with a full bar and extensive menu. Between the golf course, driving range and restaurant the parking lot was packed mid morning. Doesn't anyone work anymore!!!! Standard breakfast, lunch and dinner fare in a nice setting. The portions are huge. I saw a club house sandwich delivered to the next table that could serve a family of 4. We sat inside this time but as the weather warms will prolly sit outside under the massive umbrellas and watch the planes from Oakland Airport and the wildlife. Jim's On The Course is one popular restaurant. We came on a Sunday for a late breakfast/early lunch, and their tables were filled with customers both outdoors and indoors. We were fortunate to wait for only 10 minutes before a table became available for our family of seven. Service became much slower after that. They appeared to be understaffed. Maybe some employees called in sick or something. I was okay with the wait because I had actually eaten something earlier in the morning. Some other members of the family were a bit restless though. I also enjoyed watching the football game that was showing on the big screen tv. Took almost an hour after we were seated to get served our food. I had Jim's Breakfast Sandwich with Hash Browns. Just remembered that it was supposed to come with toast. They did not bring me any. Oh well. The sandwich and hash browns did taste good at least. Went to Jim's on the Course for only my second visit and had a wonderful time. You can eat indoors or outdoors on the huge patio, which is right next to the first hole of the golf course, so you can watch golfers teeing up and hitting their first shot. Since the weather was sunny and warm we sat outside and enjoyed the expansive view of the links and the view of the Oakland hills in the distance. It is great to feel like you are out in the country, while actually in the city. In fact, since Jim's is right near the Oakland Air port, it is the perfect place to eat lunch or dinner, before catching a flight. For lunch, they offer a great selection of sandwiches. I had the pastrami and swiss cheese on sourdough bread which was quite delicious. My guests had the club sandwich and a B L T with avocado, which they both deemed quite good, and as it was their first visit, they both said they want to return. Saving the best for last, they make great drinks for a very low price! I had two big Martini's for $6.50 each. A Bloody Mary was a bit higher at $7.50, but still quite a bargain. The large selection of beer, was $6.00 and up for a pint. Finally the service was quick and friendly, with a very attentive staff, so we left a $25.00 tip on a $98.00 bill! read more

Last month it was Chinese New Year, so I was not able to be there for the get together. Compared to my review of last year, I decided to order something else on the menu. Jim's super burrito was okay. I wasn't pleased with the Arnold Palmer. It was more like iced tea. However, yesterday I had their chicken fried steak with country gravy, eggs (soft scrambled), freshly grated hash brown potatoes and toast. My beverage was an Arnold Palmer. All right! Breakfast and beverage were much better. The chicken fried steak was moist and not salty. With the country gravy, it was indeed on point. My soft scrambled eggs were perfect, just the way I like it. The portion of food was generous such that I could only eat half of it. The other half was leftover for dinner. As usual, service is very good. The waitstaff know we ladies are there on the second Saturday for breakfast. They are friendly, helpful and extremely patient with us. I can be fickle at times, not knowing what I feel like having for breakfast. However, since that chicken fried steak was delicious, I know exactly what I am having next month. read more

Orders: California Club sandwich $17.99 comprises of a triple decker w/sliced Turkey breast, thick bacon, sliced avocado, crisp lettuce & sliced tomato. For the side, I decided on minestrone soup. Soup was nice and hearty & had plenty of vegetables, great flavor as well. This sandwich brought back memories of having a classic & very filling sandwich with quality ingredients. A definite item to order at Jim's. Reuben- corn beef on rye with melted Swiss & sauerkraut. I decided on ordering fries as a side. Nice thin slices of meat with a perfectly melted Swiss cheese. I've been to Jim's many times over the years and have never had a bad meal. Recently I came here for lunch and ordered the Grilled Chicken Tostada for the first time. I've had the Greek Salad and the Cobb Salad before with my go to being the Chef's Salad. The Grilled Chicken Tostada was good, fresh and crisp. Also satisfying my craving for Mexican food LOL. Overall I have to say I really like all of the salads here. Always fresh and very plentiful they're a good "healthy" option. You know, I have been eating at Jim's on the Course for years and I've never been disappointed. They are a grill and that is the standard to which I have rated them. The severs have always been friendly, the service is always acceptable and the food hearty. Their breakfast here is so good, that I rarely try anything else. Of course, I like the chicken fried steak breakfast the best and get this most of the time! My wife likes them as well, their breakfasts and salads are her favorite. Alameda has Mexican, Asian, Italian and all of the other standard ethnic offerings. Sometimes I just crave good ol' American food, and yes, add gravy please. Jim's satisfies my craving nicely. Most of the time with the Alameda weather, we dine inside. It's got an average coffee shop ambiance with lots of tables and a bar tucked into the corner. I do love the view of the golf course which transforms the place into something more than an average coffee shop. On this day, it was warm in Alameda and we were offered a table on the patio. WHEN: Sat @11am PARKING: There was a good amount of parking and we found one quick in their lot. It seemed to be a busy sunny day and lots people were here. There's plenty of seating both outdoors and indoors. However, if you sit outdoors, bring a hat because the tables have no umbrella. Lots of options here, but since it's our first time, here's what we had: SPECIAL #2 - $14.99 Golden Waffle, 2 Eggs, with choice of: 4 strips of bacon or 4 sausage links of 4 sausage patties. I had my eggs scrambled and although there seems to be at least 3 eggs worth, it was just okay. I prefer my scrambled eggs more runny so these felt over cooked. I chose Sausage Patties and these little patties were pretty good. As for the Waffles, oh man I loved it! It's what I expect it to be: thick, crispy on the outside, slightly fluffy towards the center, warm so the butter melts. What a treat! Oh and the dish comes with lots of butter and syrup on the side. I don't know if its real maple or just the cheap pancake syrup. SPECIAL #6 - $14.99 Two Pancakes, Two Eggs with choice of: 4 strips of bacon or 4 sausage links or 2 sausage patties. Eggs were fried and lovely, the sausage links were salty and greasy as expected, which means they were good. The pancake are soft, fluffy, and huge so leftovers were had. I was in this past month and the food was good. Most of the workers were very pleasant, but I will say one of the waitresses is VERY loud which made the experience not as pleasant. As a customer I should not be able to hear what is being spoken from across the room. She was talking to one of the male waiters. I understand English and Spanish, as I'm sure many customers do as well, so it'd be nice to tell to your workers when conversations are not appropriate for work settings. I'll cut them slack on the service because getting good help is tough these days but the interior and carpet haven't changed in 20 years and the food is basic. Jim's On the Course in my opinion should match how the food at the original Jim's tastes. Meaning same recipes, about the same proportions, and same appearance. I noticed immediately that my corned beef hash looked "different" than usual. I found out the corned beef hash this restaurant uses is from a can. I asked the manager to confirm that was true and long story short, he said HE DOESN'T KNOW and the chef is having a bad day and he'd relay the comment to the chef tomorrow. But this isn't the chef's problem, it's MANAGEMENT. I'm grateful that the chef simply shows up and cooks for so many customers. I'm still dumbfounded that Jim's On the Course uses canned corned beef hash as compared to Jim's on Lincoln which I believe is made from scratch. If I had known, it just comes from a can ahead of time, I would have ordered a Reuben like I encouraged my friend to order. I think the best part of my rare appearance at this location is that our water server, Steven, noticed every time my water glass was low and filled it. Pros are the huge parking lot, the fact that it's located close by on Bayfarm and that there's plenty of seating, both indoor and outdoor. The food is meh. Their portions are huge but it's also pricey for what you get. I've gotten cold fries before, and their eggs benedict is lacking. 3 stars because their service is incredibly slow...on multiple occasions it's taken a long time just to get menus, water, you name it. If you're coming to eat, be prepared to wait. There have been times when I debated between eating here (because it's closer to home) vs. eating on Main Island (takes longer to drive there and back) and I should have opted for the latter. read more

We live closer to Jims on Park Street but there's just something about the location that is preferable - maybe you just have to experience it for yourself (ﾟヮﾟ) The menu is the same as Jims on Park Street, at least from the birds eye view, and quality is the same IMO. We agreed since we were hungry and our friend suggested Jim's On The Course. We have never been there but he said that the food is great. We met up with him there and we were brought back by the hostess to a table inside. Everybody there was kind to us, and seeing a lot of golfers out there was different and very interesting. Hubby ordered the Special #2 and I had the Italian omelet with a mimosa. The portion was a lot! I barely finished my food, my friend ended up helping me finish it. I'm an Alamedan, homegrown. I've eaten at Jim's (near Park St) and Ole's since 1989. I cannot recommend Jim's on the Course: please go to Ole's. Ole's is by far by favorite brunch place in Alameda. The service here is slow and all over the place, and the sausage patties are gross. If you absolutely want waffles, although I recommend Ole's pancakes, Jim's on the island is your bet. This Sunday, it was regular for me-- I went to eat with my wife in the morning, we got breakfast and it was great but it was a little different this time around. A lot of people don't know that I speak Spanish but I do. I had overheard 2 waitresses and 1 waiter gossiping in Spanish which made my wife and I super uncomfortable. This was recommended to my breakfast/brunch group from a local coworker. I did like the original pitch of a nice sized restaurant with a big outdoor patio, right on a golf course with a big breakfast/lunch menu with a full bar. That is usually a winner combo and this place did indeed have all those components working for them, but not at a stellar level that you'd come to expect from that package. Okay their patio is quite nice, much bigger than anything you'd really see anywhere in the Bay Area. That's because they are subleasing from a golf course so there is some decent real estate for them to utilize. Very nice heavy cast iron tables and chairs which I'm sure serves it's purpose due to being exposed to a very open part of the bay area, so wind and weather will play a major role in your out here. The patio is set atop some nice pavers with ample spacing from table to table. Views of the golf course can be had, but honestly since this is a links style course so it isn't one of those pretty manicured and landscaped courses. If you've ever seen a British Open match, this looks real similar with just grass from all lenghths rolling from one view to the next. You'll also see lots of airplanes from all sizes gliding above as this place is just a couple of miles from Oakland International. The service was just meh for us. The service was efficient but seemed more like an efficient transaction than a hospitality occasion. It seemed like the server didn't want to go back and forth out to the patio, so ya better get everything worked out in 1-2 appearances. The busser was the nicest and I have a feeling if a table needed a bit more attention, then the busser would have to be your outlet. Food was just meh to me. Indeed a huge breakfast menu, nobody will get left out. Bennies, eggs, brekkie meats of choice, pancakes, waffles and drinks. If ya want anything substantial then things will start at about $15 and go to about $25. I actually found their non-call drinks to be the super bargain of the morning as none were over $10, more like $8ish. That will probably be my main draw here as a 2 drink morning chat with some friends, with a little food to go with, is more than enough for me to swing back. Bloody Mary ($8ish/4*) Not bad, on the thicker end of the spectrum with a heavy dose of horseradish. A little heavy handed for me as it was starting to remind me of cocktail sauce, like I wanted it with some shrimps or oysters. Lol. And ya just cannot beat that price. Irish Coffee ($8ish/4.5*) Requested no sugar as the whiskey and cream adds plenty of sweetness for me. Solid rendition as I don't need this to be that elevated or played with for me to enjoy one. Simple and basic just the way I like it. Lox and Scallion Omelet ($18ish/3*) This was decent but not crave worthy. It was a nice sized omelet, ain't complaining about their portion sizes, they deliver and won't leave you hungry. The eggs were nicely cooked and rolled, not too dark, as I hate very browned and well done scrambled eggs. I was almost going to request to have the eggs done very lightly even a tad wet even (Euro style) but I didn't want to get too involved for my first out. There were indeed noticeable bites of salmon/lox but it seemed to have been cooked or scrambled to where it was all just in shredded bits. For some reason when I saw the word 'lox' I was thinking something more premium, silky even rawish/cold smoked in texture. Nope this was fully cooked smoked salmon. It still was the star of the dish and didn't leave you hanging, just an expectation thing for me. Then the cheese was just coldish shredded cheddar on top. I didn't get this as most omelets I see, the cheese is somewhat melted either inside or atop the omelet. Cheese still tasted good with eggs but it just made the presentation look really messy and amatuerish. The home fries were alright, just wanted some crispness to it. It was just seasoned cubes of potatoes. If ya want something crisp, get their hashbrowns, as the ones on my friend's plates looked quite ideal. I'll also have to note that if you do sit on their patio, then be prepared to deal with very aggresive and brash birds of all types from the little brown ones the size of a mouse to large crows. Now the crows will not land on an occupied table, but once the table clears, they will have no problem to cash in on any scraps left on a table. The smaller birds WILL land on your table occupied and was cute at first, but as you are eating you're having to swat them away like flies. Never seen this before, as these local birds are very conditioned to humans are willing to interact with them closely, like inches close. So yeah, mixed bag for me but I'm sure we may be back as it is a convenient location for our group. Not everything hit, but nothing really also as a deal breaker. read more
