I love steakhouses bc they typically have lots of vegetarian options with sides and small plates. Moxie's menu did not disappoint. The space felt warm and gives off an intimate vibe which makes this an ideal spot for a date or dinner with friends. We went last minute on a Saturday so thankful to have scored a last minute reservation. As expected it was busy so I def recommend making reservations in advance if you can. We were seated at the high top near the door by the window. I actually loved that spot b/c it made for great people watching. Our server, Crissie was friendly, offered suggestions & checked on us often. I had the beet salad with oranges and goat cheese (so fresh and perfectly prepared), the mac and cheese with gorgonzola (YUM!!!) and tried some of my BF's potatoes - he ordered a steak and was very pleased with his selection. After slightly a year or so in their initial operations, I finally was able to give them a whirl. This is a steakhouse but a modern one, not those old school ones with dark wood all around and black and white photos. It is dark in there (at night) but it is pretty stylish with urban flair. When I first heard a steakhouse was opening in Alameda, I was a bit skeptical. But now that I've seen it first hand, I gotta say I liked it...a lot even. Their menu is strictly a la carte, which is common for steakhouses. Everything has to be ordered individually. Soup, salad, starch or veggies to go with steak, all have to be ordered separately. I found getting 2 sides is very sharable for 2 diners. Their beef sourcing is also very modern. Instead of using basic USDA graded/fed meat, they'll use smaller ranches/farms right here in California. They may even feature 2 different farms, so you may even get an education on top of a full and happy belly. I'm actually leaning into this type of beef eating as it is more wholesome and sustainable. And since I have cut my beef consumption by a lot these days, I might as well eat more with choice and deliberation versus just what our government pushes on us. Templeton Rye on the rocks ($12/5*) Decent pour and loved how they carried this brand of bourbon. This is naturally aromatic and spicy with sweet fruit esters and a bold cinnamon tinge. So I often don't want to mask it with vermouth or cherries, just a little ice to make the spirit bloom. And that price, Iets just say it can turn me into a reg. Asparagus and Roast Garlic Soup ($10/5*) This was a soup special the night I went. Verbally announced. Perfect fine dining cream soup, silky texture and good asparagus flavor. And they garnish it with thick and chewy hits of lardons (OG bacon), small but garlic-y croutons and maybe some creme fraiche. Equally pleasing for the eye as well as for the palate. Abatti Farms Bavette Steak ($48/5*) Sure they've got filet, strip and ribeyes here, but I'm always looking for more not-so-conventional steak cuts like flat iron, flank, hanger or this, which is also called 'flap meat', But the french bavette just sounds so much more suave. Lol. This flap meat steak is pan seared very aggressively that a thick dark brown crust is achieved. Well salted that biting into the crust with the juicy beefy center was beef encapsulated. I heard angels sing in harmony in my head, as I closed my eyes to let the euphoric wave course through my senses. You can get sauces to try (extra charge) but for my first out, I enjoyed the steak just fine without any extraneous saucing. I had never heard of Abatti Farms but after looking it up, they are a small sustainable farm from the Imperial Valley in Socal that raises Wagyu breeds, so American wagyu. Definitely not as fatty as Japanese raised wagyu but still quality inherent fat within the bites. They also featured steaks from another farm that featured the Holstein breed for cattle. I totally want to take this educational ride with them. Classic Mash ($10/5*) Perfectly smooth and hearty texture. Didn't seem like Yukon golds as it wasn't yellowish, so just basic but enrichened with a good dose of butter and probably cream. Nothing to clash with the beef from being overly rich. Simple and solid. Wild Mushrooms ($10/4*) Good assortment of mushrooms all cut into smaller pieces. Intense mushroom flavor with a good hit of fresh thyme. They do more of a dry sauté, almost seems roasted so made it more intense, almost a tad crisp. Most other mushroom preps are more wet and saucy. But this paired with the intense beef, creamy potatoes and sips of their Rhone selection was just sublime. Cognac and Coffee ($13/4.5*) I was too full for dessert so I asked the bartender to make me one I could just sip on. I said I was kinda in the mood for an Irish Coffee type of drink but said you can do your thing. We settled on a variant by using Cognac, Martell I think they used. Just a touch of real soft cream made for a nice aromatic and slow sipper. Maybe next time I'll request a drop of Grand Marnier or some other liqueur to add another layer of flavor. Been wating to try Moxie for a while. Its a smallish restaurant so reservations can be hard to get. Party of 4 on a Sat night. They texted us 20 minutes before our reservation time to tell us our table was ready. Nice touch. Plenty of parking in the shared lot behind the restaturant. Arrived 5 mins early and our table was ready. 3 of us ordered the restaurant week prix fixe special of a caesar salad, steak and fries and soft service ice cream. The other ordered the 14 oz ribeye nad brussel sprouts. The caesar was very good and elevated with 2 anchovies on top. The french onion was quite strong so I watered it down a llittle and it was fine. The ribeye was cooked perfectly and the brussel sprouts were tasty. Unfortunately the steak special was a little too salty and was tought he cut and chew. I would have preferred paying more and getting a better steak. The ice cream came in a big bowl with a chocolate cap. Yum! Service was great - very friendly and checked on us to make sure everything was OK. They have a small but well-curated brunch menu, which also includes a donut cart with fancy artisanal donuts. Their reservation system is awful. I made a reservation three days before the intended dine-in date, but wanted to cancel an hour after making the reservation. The reservation system they use, Tock, does not allow you to cancel or modify reservations once made. But upon looking it up, this seems to be something the restaurant chooses to allow or not allow. (For context, I'm not someone who's illiterate with tech, I grew up on in the boom of social media, so I know my way around a website or app) I've tried calling the restaurant during normal business hours, and the call goes straight to voicemail and in the voicemail message states to not leave a voicemail regarding reservations. In that case, where am I supposed to leave any sort of message regarding my request for cancellation? Truly too hard to be worth it, and seems awfully predatory to me. They will not be getting my business in the future and it looks like I'll be disputing the eventual $35 fee they charge for "no-shows or late cancellations" read more

We made a reservation at least a month in advance, and that went well. We were seated probably once we arrive and the hostess was friendly and fast. The table that we were sat at was a perfect size for the five of us. It was comfortable and clean. The bartender was our server. I forgot to get his name. He was wonderful though he had lots of great recommendations. We started with cocktails that were all delicious. They gave us complementary housemaid chips that were actually really good too. For our main courses, we ordered three of the special Wagyu steaks a chicken pot pie and I myself ordered three appetizers to create a meal. Everything tasted great, cooked to perfection, and our only complaint was the sides were a little small. They were barely shareable. The facilities are extremely clean, so that makes me super happy as I like a very neat and tidy and cleanly restaurant to dine at. I would go back, but I don't think anything stood out as I need to go back to eat that unfortunately. We were in the mood for steak and we found this place so we gave it a try. The food was mostly very good. A few of the sides were undercooked, the carrots were almost still raw. My husband and I came here on a Sunday evening with reservations at 5:45pm. The restaurant was surprisingly small but got pretty busy by the time we were done with our meal. Our server was really nice and had good suggestions on menu items. We ordered the tomahawk steak to share along with broccolini, mushroom skewers, crispy Yukon potatoes with caviar, beef tallow fries and mashed potatoes. The tomahawk with chimichurri sauce was great. It was cooked rare/medium rare, which is just how we like our steaks. The appetizers/sides were all tasty, but I expected the portions to be a bit bigger for the price. Our favorite appetizer was the crispy Yukon potatoes. The sauce with the caviar was really good. I would definitely order the tomahawk again. Just note that it takes 40 minutes to prepare, so we did have to wait a while before it came out. Since the place was on the smaller side, the tables were pretty close to each other. That didn't bother us though. Our neighbors were nice. It's cozy and perfect for an intimate dinner, although, it can be hard to hear at times since you are closer to other patrons. The food and wait staff are excellent. Waitress was friendly and responsive and the food was great! We started off with duck crostini that were just perfect. The meat was smoked and the toast just the right texture and then a fig(?) jam on top to finish it off. I couldn't get enough of the beet and strawberry salad. It was fresh and colorful, with some crunchy caramelized pecans and goat cheese. The wedge salad was loaded and met the craving of a good wedge. We shared a filet minion that was served with an herbed butter. Each bite was tender and buttery and rich. We also ordered the chive fritters which were a perfect addition to the meal, crunchy outside and tender inside. Lastly, we splurged with an ice cream sundae with chocolate sauce and toasted almonds. I came here on a warm Saturday to meet up with a fellow Yelper and old grade school friend for an early dinner. I made reservations for 5pm. I was greeted as I walked in, and we were seated in the small dining area in front of the bar. The tables were set in a very organized manner, as they prepared for dinner service. I asked the server if there were any specials. She mentioned a "Grilled Salmon w/ Mashed Potatoes" for $25. But then she quickly reminded me that I'm in a steak house! My friend and I skipped the salads. I ordered Gulf Shrimp w/ Cocktail Sauce. My friend ordered a mini Lobster Roll. My Gulf Shrimp were large, plump, and tasty. However, the cocktail sauce was thin and barely made a difference as a dip. Also, there's no bread or rolls served with our meal. Note: After you order, a person comes to your table and removes unnecessary utensils and glassware. Also, if you drop crumbs, someone will come sweep your table with a brush. For main course, I ordered Lamb Chops w/ a side of Beef Tallow Fries. OMG, those Lamb Chops were absolutely delicious! Rich flavor, juicy meat, tender and easy to cut with a knife. For me, the presentation was okay because the lamb chops were stacked and covered the plate. However, my friend ordered a 6-oz Holstein Filet Mignon, and it looked tiny on the large platter. The sides are shareable, so you're supposed to take a serving and put if on your plate. My Beef Tallow Fries didn't stay crispy very long. I think they should serve thick steak fries instead. After we finished our meal, a staff person came and asked us how we liked our meal. I told her the honest truth. The sauce for the Gulf Shrimp was weak. Came here for a father and daughter dinner and the experience was just okay. I got the ribeye and my daughter had the filet mignon. She enjoyed hers but mine was nothing special and I didn't feel great afterward. Service was mixed. The waitress did recommend a less fatty cut for my daughter, which I appreciated. But she barely checked in on us most of the meal. Later on I started a conversation and asked if she used to work at another restaurant. She said yes and after that she opened up more. She was nice, just not very attentive. I asked for Japanese whisky and she wasn't familiar, so I ordered the Old Fashioned. It was fine. The Pinot Noir I got after was pretty bad. The biggest issue was the gnats. It was dark so you don't notice at first, but once I saw one I realized there were more. I even saw other guests swatting them too. For a place that's supposed to feel nicer, that's not something you expect. The next day my stomach wasn't right and it made me think. The broccolini the fries and the donuts were the best part of the night. For spending over $270 dollars I expected a cleaner environment better drinks and more attentive service. I was in the neighborhood and saw a sign that read donuts from the parking lot. On this particular day I already had breakfast but it was stored in my memory bank. I usually frequent another donut shop, but it's on the other side of Santa Clara off of Webster street. I had gone into this place the next day and discovered it was a Fancy Steak house, but it had donuts. I had ordered a lemon curd blueberry donut and a Bloody Mary. The Bartender Cat was super friendly and the B M was the right spice. I basically enjoyed the Bloody Mary and took the donut to go. It was a little messy but the Donut tasted great. I don't know about you but I can't devour a whole 14 ounce ribeye like I did when younger, share it - yeah.... Since we went as a group, we ordered the large Tomahawk, a Ribeye, Lamb-chops, and the fish of the day. All were properly prepared as requested and enough for the nine of us. The sides are a bit small and you'll need to order two-three per couple. We liked the mushrooms and the zucchini squash. We ordered drinks which came rather promptly, which was also very nice. We ordered our food promptly as we were hungry. We ordered A New York Steak steak and a pre fixed menu steak fillet. Kid you not our meal did not arrive until 8:45! What kept us at the restaurant was that we were getting our drinks and they were rather good drinks. Also our waitress, Chrissie did come and tell us the kitchen was backed up. But then... THEN the guests next to us got their meals. That's when the manager came and told us that our meal had gotten lost. She emphasized that our waitress had in fact put it in the order but they didn't understand why the meal got lost. The manager then proceeded to say that our meals were priority. Help us understand why if our meals were a priority new guests around us were getting their meals before us? Our meal finally arrived. The steak was cold and flavorless. I felt the cooking was rushed. We were told we were going to have some items removed from our bill but ... they removed one round of drinks and our meal still was over 200 with bad service and poor food quality. Solid 4 out of 5. With just a few tweaks, Moxie has the potential to become a true 5-star steakhouse. This was my second visit, and a big improvement from the first. I'm glad I gave it another shot. That said, Moxie sets a very high bar for itself. Prices are on par with the best steakhouses in Chicago or NYC, not small-town Alameda, so that's the lens I'm using to evaluate the experience. Let's start with the service and ambiance. Both were excellent. The staff was warm, attentive, and professional from the moment we walked in. Everything from seating to ordering to timing was on point. I felt genuinely welcome, and that really elevated the night. We ordered one appetizer to share, two sides, and two Brandt Farms ribeye steaks. One thing I loved: they offer the same cut of steak from different farms, each with its own flavor profile. That's a great touch and not something you see often. For sides, we picked the chile lime sweet potatoes and grilled asparagus. Both were great choices and more than enough food for two people. The steaks themselves were good, but not great. Both ribeyes were cooked unevenly. One side was closer to well done, the other side more medium rare. Not a deal-breaker, but noticeable, and something that really shouldn't happen at this level. The flavor was a bit underwhelming. It needed more salt, and mine had a nice crust on just one side and not the other. Still, I enjoyed experimenting with the sauces they offer. Overall, I think the place is on the right track. The experience was strong enough that I'll be back one more time to see if they've dialed things in. Moxie has the potential to be a standout steakhouse. All of my friends said there steaks, prime rib, and lamb chops tasted great and was cooked perfectly. The prime rib came with two sides (mash potatoes & snap peas) which both tasted good. The mash potatoes were light, and tasty and the snap peas had some great flavor to it. My pork chop was okay, nothing special about it, a little small but it was cooked perfect. We ordered some sides to go with the meal, mac n cheese, asparagus, mash potatoes, and cauliflower. The mac n cheese was very cheesy which I like and the noodles were cooked perfect, mash potatoes like I said was very tasty, and my friends said the asparagus was really good too. Great addition to Alameda. Steaks were reasonably priced and they had a lot of other non-steak options. I love Caesar salad and theirs did not disappoint. Meatballs were yum! I wanted to share some feedback from our recent visit on Friday evening (8/8). My boyfriend's birthday tradition is to have a special steak dinner, and although I usually book well in advance, this year was busier than usual with work. Over the years, we've enjoyed several top-notch steakhouses in San Francisco, San Jose, and Palo Alto, as well as our local favorite, Park Street Tavern. This time, we decided last minute to try Moxie for the first time, making the reservation on Wednesday for Friday dinner. While there were certainly positives, my boyfriend really enjoyed his steak, which was cooked perfectly, and the service was friendly. There were also a few aspects that left us feeling the experience didn't quite match our expectations for a special occasion. We were seated at what felt like the most awkward table in the restaurant. It was in the middle, very close to a couple at the window on one side and a booth on the other. Conversations felt uncomfortably close, and when the salad cart came to the booth and someone passed to use the restroom, there was very little space left. It made for a cramped and distracting setting. My cocktail (I believe it was the Lizz Fizz) was tasty but felt almost non-alcoholic. While I understand not all drinks need to be "strong," for $14 each, they could be more balanced in proportion. My fish entrée came with rice pilaf that was unfortunately overcooked, and the apricot dessert we ordered afterward, hoping to end on a high note, was texturally one-note and underwhelming in flavor. Lastly, while the staff remained friendly throughout, things seemed a bit frantic once it got busier, which may explain why we didn't receive the "something" mentioned when we told our server we were celebrating a birthday. I'm generally very easygoing and understand that busy nights happen, but I think these points are worth mentioning especially for guests celebrating important occasions and spending accordingly. read more

Had Mother's Day brunch here today for the first time and our first issue was the reservation which we made for 3 people and they said it was for only 2 people. They then proceeded to tell us that they would seat the 3 of us, but we needed to be aware that they had other people coming in so we had a time limit to eat. Even when we found and showed them the confirmation that our reservation was for 3 people we barely received an apology. As for the food, the French toast was dry and the banana pancake was not flambé but was burnt and tasted terrible. The server did not flambé the entire pancake, thank goodness and just walked away from us. We placed 2 orders for bacon which I received 2 pieces and my daughter got 3. The service was lackluster and even the coffee service was poor. My husband ordered a black coffee and was given an Americano in a very small cup. When he asked for more, they brought him the French press. Very confusing. Oh and when they showed us the pastry selection they took our daughter's order but did not ask for ours, we had to call the server back to place that ordered. While I would like to say the restaurant was busy, it really wasn't so the confusing service was unacceptable. Needless to say we will not be back again. read more

Wow! Kat is a cocktail maestro! The ambiance inside is low-lit, broody/romantic and very high-end. The à la carte menu changes seasonally and the steaks are quite nice. Food was delicious, service was even better. Highly recommend the wedge salad, Mac and cheese, sweet potato churros, and filet mignon. read more

Phenomenonal from beginning to end, this is a fabulous restaurant for any special occasion! I had the Bubbles, Berries, 'Bharb cocktail with Spicy Lamb Lollies, then the Holstein Ribeye with Sugar Snap Peas and a glass of Château Cotes de Bonde Montagne-Saint-Émilion. For weekend brunch, they make in-house donuts, and I was lucky enough to try a leftover raspberry custard one. Everything was perfect, from beginning to end! read more
