I'm a true foodie at heart and I feel so lucky to have been in the Bay Area my whole life because we truly have the best food here and all types of cuisines. I love Vietnamese food and I've had some that's just okay and typical, but then some that are a standout. Well, PHO 84 is the one of those for me! It's easily my TOP 3 Vietnamese spots in the entire Bay Area. I used to work at the Kaiser building around the corner when it used to be Kaiser, and that was back in 2004, when I first walked into this place. It was always packed during lunchtime. It's a family-owned and family-run business. I will just say, I have been coming here REGULARLY since then, and that's a very long time! Here's what I love about PHO 84... I've had just about every menu item here and there hasn't been one thing I didn't like. Their food is delicious and authentic. Their pho is some of the best and their fried imperialism rolls are perfectly crispy packed with so much flavor from the filling. My usual order is the rice plate (" #19" ) with grilled chicken and it comes with a side salad and 2 imperial rolls. This is my go-to meal here and I have ordered it numerous times throughout the years (since 2004), and I appreciate the fact that they have not changed their portion sizes from back then. The chicken is so flavorful with a little kick and I love their yellow rice. My order usually lasts me 2 meals when I order it to go because the portions are generous and I usually can only eat half of it in one sitting and save the rest for another meal. I love coming in here and seeing the owner working. I usually compliment him for his amazing food. He is such a gentleman, always professional and so courteous. This place could easily be missed if you drive by too fast but when you walk in, you'll feel the quaint, warm vibe that will somehow give you a nostalgic feel. Can you tell I love this place? Delicious oho! I admit I look at one star and five star reviews first. The one stars made me apprehensive as I witnessed one such scenario start to unfurl. I did have to wait quite a while for my menu but I already knew what I wanted, Jasmine tea and rare steak pho. Once I ordered things moved fast without rushing me. That put our experience off to a good start. It was a full house Saturday night, so being seated upon entry was a plus. I can tell that who I presume to be the owner is very attentive to his guests. With that type of attention, I asked what he'd recommend. After eying the Spicy Curry Shrimp for some time, I was happy that was what he suggested. It was between that or the Spicy Curry Fish. I ordered the spicy curry shrimp which is served over vermicelli and a side of seasoned rice. This dish? Warming, savory and filling. The rice was needed, and at first I didn't think I'd need all of the rice but with the amount of curry on my plate, it was the perfect +1. We also had the shrimp spring rolls as an appetizer. Their sweet and sour sauce has a nice spicy kick. Good ambiance and they're located on 17th street. It's pretty close to 19th st bart as well. Maybe like a block or two away. WOW WOW their pho broths are so flavorful and comforting!! My partner and I ordered the chicken pho and beef pho w/ rare steak and brisket. When we took our first slurp out of our respective bowls, we both looked at each other like, damn that broth is hella good. You can see and taste the richness- it ain't just watery bouillon. We tried the meat next and that was great too. A lot of pho spots overcook their chicken and it gets super dry and tough; but theirs was moist and tender- and it was BREAST meat! Their beef was really soft even when fully cooked in the broth. Needless to say, we slurped the shit out of those bowls. The place was calming and clean, service was wonderful. We got to chat with the owner who was super friendly. When we complimented about how good the broth was, he explained it's from using a lot of bones and cooking them for a long time. He told us their restaurant is 40 years old, opened in 1984. He has seen a lot of changes in the area brought on by the pandemic, and business is slower, but we hope they stay open another 40 years! Go try their pho, and support them and other mom n pop businesses in Oakland! They stay open past 6pm which is an extra bonus ;). Something happened since my last review 4 years ago. This place now ROCKS. The pho broth is the cleanest and best in Oakland (trust me, I've had pho in probably 10 establishments in Oakland alone), and the proteins are extremely fresh and melt in your mouth tender. It's impossible to find tender rare steak and brisket - everything is usually way too chewy, but Pho 84 does it right. The To-Go packaging is always on point, very organized to optimize texture, temperature and flavor. Although it does hurt to pay $23 for a large combo beef pho, the other pho restaurants are close to $20 now also, so it'll have to do in this inflationary economy. :( read more

Nevertheless, the ingredients always taste fresh and the broth is never overly salty. Adding sriracha & just the smallest bit of hoisin sauce is my go-to. Food: - The raw beef carpaccio (bo tai chanh) was a bit chewy but overall refreshing, tasty, and packed with flavor - the shrimp spring rolls (tom goi cuon) were nicely stuffed with vermicelli, shrimp and lettuce. The peanut sauce paired well with the rolls. - the chanh chua with shrimp was a bit too sweet for my liking but overall the broth has a solid tangy flavor and there were a heaping amount of veggies and shrimp. I cannot believe I have not gotten a chance to get to try this place before! I wish I knew about it a long time ago. I SERIOUSLY found my go to place for beef pho. I usually go for chicken pho but I had to try the beef. It was beyond over the top so tasty. The beef was so clean and lean and the broth was so fresh and light just the way I like it. I'm usually extremely picky when it comes to pho in general. I haven't found a good place out in East Bay or SF, you name it anywhere in the Bay Area like. I'm definitely going to be a a regular now. This is my favorite Vietnamese restaurant in Oakland since I feel like they serve authentic dishes. Always amazing!!! I was afraid the quality will change because I just did a delivery but it was still so good when it arrived. We got: - Pork rice plate #18 - Chicken saute with eggplant - Shrimp with coconut milk curry - Chicken with spring rolls vermicelli bowl - Shrimp rolls I like everything but I would say my favorite is the shrimp with coconut milk curry, it has the good amount of spiciness.
