I was afraid the quality will change because I just did a delivery but it was still so good when it arrived. We got: - Pork rice plate #18 - Chicken saute with eggplant - Shrimp with coconut milk curry - Chicken with spring rolls vermicelli bowl - Shrimp rolls I like everything but I would say my favorite is the shrimp with coconut milk curry, it has the good amount of spiciness. I'm always cold and I talked nonstop about wanting to get some kind of warm soup, so when a girlfriend of mine and I walked down the block and saw this gem of a restaurant, I got so excited ! I love pho and they had a vegetarian option, so we were good to go. The appetizers were good, we got a large portion of veggie spring rolls and the drinks were really good as well. I will say that I'm happy the owner discouraged me from ordering the larger bowl of pho, as I barely made a dent in the smaller bowl I had! I don't know why I took me this many years to try this place. On the first try had chicken pho and soup with tamarind base and shrimp which was outstanding - never had anything like that before, definitely coming back for more soup and to try other items. Presentation disappointing, quality was missed, and flavor just was not there tonight. Out of all the times I've ordered Pho for take out, this is truly the first experience I've had where the noodles were at the bottom of the Chinese takeout box. Being new to Oakland, I've been on the hunt for a new pho spot. After being disappointed with monster pho, I gave up on my search. Today I decided to order from pho 84 on doordash. Unfortunately, my dasher didn't pick up the rest of my order, (I wanted spring rolls), but the pho more than made up for it. I ordered the chicken pho with added vegetables. The veggies and noodles were SO fresh, the extra garnish was fresh, and the broth was incredibly tasty. This place is always crowded and there is usually a wait when I walk by during peak lunch hours. They have a pretty large menu with lots of variety. I think you get more if you get the rice plates, which are huge. I'm a soup girl and usually go when it's cold so I've mainly eaten the pho. So far I've tried the beef and the chicken/seafood. The pho was decent but I have had better more authentic pho - I feel like it may be a bit Americanized. The broth is flavorful but the noodles are a little thick for my taste. The service is ok for the most part and somehow the wait is t as long as it appears. I am interested in trying more of the rice plates with eggs on top, garlic noodles, etc. but I would ideally like to share it with more people. I think I have been here maybe 8 (?) years ago (and I still remember). It's one of the first places I ever ate pho! Over the years, my love for Vietnamese food as grown exponentially and it's become one of my favorite cuisines. But I never returned to Pho 84, I don't know why... Today, I somehow remembered them and ordered through DD. I was delighted that they are still good. The broth of the soup was very well-balanced and the add-ons were plentiful. I ordered coconut milk curry with mushrooms and chicken for the husband, and he was happy as well (although it was quite spicy... he was able to sweat through it :-)) All in all, a very pleasant experience and hopefully, we will soon be able to eat at the brick and mortar place again next year! read more

The interesting thing about Vietnamese food is it can be really inexpensive at some places for some garlic noodles, pho, some type of meat, and some imperial rolls. Then there is the other extreme where a Vietnamese restaurant is charging $60 plus dollars for crab and garlic noodles. Regardless of the cost, people pay it. To them, it's worth it. That being said Pho 84 is somewhere in the middle price-wise. I had lunch at Pho 84 with a group of four people. Three people in the group ordered vermicelli dishes and I was able to try a little of their food. Overall I would say three stars. I ordered a special item which was pork chops and garlic noodles. The garlic noodles really stood out. Tasty, savory, garlicky, delightful noodles of joy. The pork chops however were just pork chops, nothing special. Four stars for that dish. But the service was excellent. The restrooms are beyond clean. The restrooms even smell nice, better than the bathroom at my house so props for that. The dishes however are all overpriced in my opinion. For example the Pho is $14 here, and good Pho shouldn't cost that much in my eyes. So while Pho 84 gets knocked for the above average prices, they make up for in service and cleanliness for sure. A place worth checking out to see what middle of the road Vietnamese is like. read more

This spot felt like a hidden gem! I came with a group of friends after ice skating, and ordered the pho #1 with beef flank, beef balls, and tendon. The warm soup definitely felt refreshing after a long skating session, and I really liked the texture of the noodles as well. Great place! read more

Quarantine has not diminished my pho cravings. My most recent delivery is from Pho 84. Delivery pho may not be as good as in person because the broth temperature inevitably go down in transit, my approach is just to heat up the broth on the stove top real quick before pouring over the ingredients. The beef pho from Pho 84 regular size was quite plentiful with meats and noodles. I liked the flavor of the broth and the just heated meat is yummy. I also ordered the non fried rolls which were good. The lemongrass tofu and vegetables dish was full of flavor and got a nice kick. read more

Pho 84 is an uptown Oakland classic. I've been working in the area for over 12 years and this restaurant has always provided consistently good Vietnamese food. My favorites are the imperial rolls as appetizer (it says 3 but it comes out with basically 6 good sized shareable pieces) and the #22 (grilled chicken with very precisely four grilled prawns over special rice). The imperial rolls are not so greasy and the special rice is cooked in chicken broth with garlic and onions and is definitely worth the extra calories. The marinated/grilled chicken itself is really tasty. The portion size tends to be on the large side (not that there's ever any leftovers when I eat here but I've had people have a good size to-go box). I also wish that the prawns (I think it's more shrimp) were a little bigger. Service is OK but this place can get really, really busy. If you want to come for lunch, I would suggest coming around 11:30. There is usually a line at noon and it's forget about it at 12:30. Prices are slightly above average for an entree in the area now (expect to pay $20-$25 after tax and tip for an entree). Highly recommended. read more

We were looking for a place that takes reservations and was near the Paramount Theatre as we were attending a concert there and I found Pho 84, which I haven't visited in a few years. I made reservations with no problem and when we arrived about 20 minutes before our reservation, they had no problem seating us. We order 4 different dishes: #18 Three meats over rice, #19 Imperial Rolls with Chicken over Rice, #8 Imperial Rolls with Pork over vermicelli, and #49 Hoisin chicken. All were flavorful and hearty as we had to take part of our meals home. So next time we are in the area attending a concert, this will be our go to place! read more

This was my first time trying Pho and I loved it. The place was very nice and homey. I tried the Chicken pho. I went with 2 other people and felt the place was great for small groups of 3-6. There was quite a wait to get seated during lunch on a Friday. To start, we ordered half an order of shrimp spring rolls. They came out pretty quickly. The vermicelli they use is great and their peanut sauce was pretty good. For the main meal, I ordered a Pho Bo which is their beef combo with rare flank stake, beef balls, etc. My boyfriend ordered the Pho Ga which is chicken based. It took awhile for our meals to come out. They gave a large portion of noodles but as we started eating them, they were already really soft and started breaking up. It seemed as if they were already sitting in the soup for a good amount of time. There wasn't anything special about their broths, they were just okay. Overrated and overpriced. I met up with a couple friends for lunch last Tuesday. Since it was a bit chilly that afternoon, one of them suggested Pho 84 for some pho. This Zagat-rated restaurant (2013-15) is located near the corner of 17th and Franklin. When you see the neon Vietnamese map on the window, then you are at the right place. We walked in at around just before 11:30am and were greeted immediately by one of the servers, who seated us at one of the tables on the left hand side. The interior was clean and elegantly decorated with beautiful large paintings and Asian musical instruments. Interior lighting was on the dimmer side and tables were squeezed tight together, which made a big guy like me feel a bit uncomfortable. Water was brought to us promptly by our server. As I was checking the menu, I noticed they have a number of specialty entrees along with the usual Vietnamese fare. I am from the school of "Order the #1 when in doubt" so that's exactly what I did - I got the Pho Bo (beef pho, large/$14). My friends opted for the Pho Ga (#2, chicken pho, medium/$12) and the Grilled Chicken Vermicelli Bowl with Imperial Rolls (#8, $14). One of them also got a Tra Gung (sweetened ginger black tea, $3.50). Our food arrived in about 10 minutes. My beef pho was a big disappointment, especially at $14. The size was about the same as a medium at other restaurants. The broth color was cloudy and it tasted a bit of the sweet side. For meat toppings, it had a few slices of rare steak and brisket, along with a piece of tendon and a few halved beef balls. Taste wise, I didn't find anything special about them. Noodles were overcooked. Overall, the quality did not match the price. The chicken pho didn't appear too exciting either. I saw a few pieces of chicken breast floating in a bowl of darker-than-usual broth. When I asked my friend who had it, he didn't appear too enthusiastic but said it was "okay". The grilled chicken vermicelli bowl looked more appetizing than the noodle soups. It was presented nicely and the person who had it had generally positive comments about it. Service was decent. Our server was friendly and did refill our water midway through the meal. IMHO, I am not sure why this place was Zagat rated. Despite the nice setting, they charge premium prices for very mediocre food. If you are in search of authentic Vietnamese food, go to San Jose or better yet the other side of Lake Merritt, where a number of authentic Vietnamese restaurants are located. For me, this place is one-and-done. Certainly not going to eat here again. BONUS MATERIAL: - Get there early. The place is busy during lunchtime. - Major credit cards accepted. - Street, garage, and private lot parking in the area. - Do not recommend going at night. Has anyone here even been to San Jose because a million places taste just like this and at a much lower price. This place is probably more Americanized for the visitors and doesn't have a huge selection but still, tastes good. I got a hu tieu and it had good flavor and a good amount of chicken and prawns.
