The pho here is pretty decent, and the flavor is good. I will give it 7.5/10. The meat is fresh and tender. Staffs are friendly, and the service is good The interior design is pretty, and they have Vietnam paintings on the wall. Very thoughtful!
Quick fast service even during busy lunch service. Came here with co workers and saw many people in here, but within 10 mins food was ready even with multiple tables ahead. Pho was decent (pricey) and beef was tender and juicy. Pho broth well seasoned and noodles were cooked just right. A great place to grab a quick bite during lunch.
I'm a true foodie at heart and I feel so lucky to have been in the Bay Area my whole life because we truly have the best food here and all types of cuisines. I love Vietnamese food and I've had some that's just okay and typical, but then some that are a standout. Well, PHO 84 is the one of those for me! It's easily my TOP 3 Vietnamese spots in the entire Bay Area. I used to work at the Kaiser building around the corner when it used to be Kaiser, and that was back in 2004, when I first walked into this place. It was always packed during lunchtime. It's a family-owned and family-run business. I will just say, I have been coming here REGULARLY since then, and that's a very long time! Here's what I love about PHO 84... I've had just about every menu item here and there hasn't been one thing I didn't like. Their food is delicious and authentic. Their pho is some of the best and their fried imperialism rolls are perfectly crispy packed with so much flavor from the filling. My usual order is the rice plate (" #19" ) with grilled chicken and it comes with a side salad and 2 imperial rolls. This is my go-to meal here and I have ordered it numerous times throughout the years (since 2004), and I appreciate the fact that they have not changed their portion sizes from back then. The chicken is so flavorful with a little kick and I love their yellow rice. My order usually lasts me 2 meals when I order it to go because the portions are generous and I usually can only eat half of it in one sitting and save the rest for another meal. I love coming in here and seeing the owner working. I usually compliment him for his amazing food. He is such a gentleman, always professional and so courteous. This place could easily be missed if you drive by too fast but when you walk in, you'll feel the quaint, warm vibe that will somehow give you a nostalgic feel. Can you tell I love this place? When I find a real gem, I become a loyal customer for life!
Came by on a lazy Thursday afternoon--low-key vibes, a quiet family dining nearby, and a calm, relaxed atmosphere. The service was prompt and friendly, which made the experience even better The Bun Bo Hue was absolutely healing--rich, spicy, and the perfect sinus-opener. The broth had just the right level of heat, bold without being overwhelming. They need to keep this on the menu--it's a standout. The Imperial Rolls were next-level--moist, clearly made in-house, and nothing like the dry, pre-frozen versions you get elsewhere. Filled with shrimp, ground chicken, and black mushrooms, they were perfectly seasoned and full of flavor. The Ginger Tea had a beautiful presentation and a warm, aromatic flavor that tied the whole meal together. Pho 84 delivers comfort, quality, and care in every bite. I'll definitely be back.
Perfect spot for a hot, reasonably priced, really nice pho before a show. On a Thursday night it was mostly full. Surprisingly they didn't have a large selection of pho, but my beef one was tasty. Nice twist is that they didn't put lemon or lime, but Meyer lemon on their veg plate. That was a first for me, it was nice!
Love Pho 84! Always come here in a large group and the service is great. They work hard to get everything done in a timely manner. I ordered the Vermicelli Bowl #8 with beef-- which also comes with 2 spring rolls. Love the pickled veggies on top and their fish sauce to pour over is awesome. I also love their coconut milk chicken curry. This is always my go-to and it never disappoints!! I do wish it was spicier, but maybe you can request this--I've never tried. The curry comes with a side of rice as well. Both portions are very generous!! The inside of this restaurant is small, but always accommodating. Once came here as a party of 12 and we fit!
Delicious oho! I admit I look at one star and five star reviews first. The one stars made me apprehensive as I witnessed one such scenario start to unfurl. I did have to wait quite a while for my menu but I already knew what I wanted, Jasmine tea and rare steak pho. Once I ordered things moved fast without rushing me. Keep in mind I came at the end of lunch order. I can't be frustrated at a slower speed in that situation. My meal was tasty. I'm happily full.
Tried Pho 84 for the first time and ordered the veggie pho -- it was light and fresh. Just a heads-up, there's an extra charge if you want a large bowl. The Vietnamese iced coffee was mild and smooth, but it was pre-made instead of the traditional drip. Prices are a bit on the higher side, but the service was friendly and the vibe/ambiance was relaxed.
Arrived at 12pm pst. Seated immediately and order taken immediately. The decor is warm and cozy. I ordered a water no ice and a tamarind base soup tofu and veggies which was tart and sweet. Everything was hot and fresh. I would recommend 10/10. I hope to come back soon.
They have some of the best pho in the area. It is pricy but you do get what you pay for, for service and quality. Recently took a coworker friend hear for their birthday. It was their first time and the loved it. It was fairly busy but service was fast. We had our food within five to 10 minutes and got back to work withing our hour.
Excellent Pho!! The best I've had in the East Bay. Located in Downtown Oakland on a side street along with a bunch of other small businesses. Quaint and Cozy but doesn't work out too well for large groups. The wait staff is always nice and friendly when I stop by for lunch. Two thumbs up:)
Getting around to trying all of the places I've been eying for some years has been slow for me, especially when I find a spot I like and I've already decided I'm sticking with it. Well, that took a turn a few nights ago. I didn't feel like driving and with Pho 84 being on my list of local restaurants to try, I pulled the trigger and walked. We were seated almost immediately. That put our experience off to a good start. It was a full house Saturday night, so being seated upon entry was a plus. I can tell that who I presume to be the owner is very attentive to his guests. With that type of attention, I asked what he'd recommend. After eying the Spicy Curry Shrimp for some time, I was happy that was what he suggested. It was between that or the Spicy Curry Fish. I ordered the spicy curry shrimp which is served over vermicelli and a side of seasoned rice. This dish? Warming, savory and filling. The rice was needed, and at first I didn't think I'd need all of the rice but with the amount of curry on my plate, it was the perfect +1. We also had the shrimp spring rolls as an appetizer. Their sweet and sour sauce has a nice spicy kick. Good ambiance and they're located on 17th street. It's pretty close to 19th st bart as well. Maybe like a block or two away. The hours are limited but they have been here for years. It's worth your taste buds to come here.
My cousin has been coming here for years and highly recommended this place and now I see why. We got the shrimp spring rolls, chicken salad, and cahn chua (spicy hot and sour lemongrass soup). Every was super tasty, especially the lemongrass soup!!! Flavorful, good balance of textures, and very satisfying. The service was also very good and all of the staff were friendly and welcoming.

Had dinner with friends on a Monday night and it was not busy at all. We ordered: Beef Carpaccio Salad 10/10 I love the sweet citrusy flavor of this dish! Imperial Rolls + Chicken on Vermicelli Noodles 8/10 Chicken wasn't dry at all. Imperial rolls were nice and crispy. Shrimp Spring Rolls 10/10 Love that the rolls are split in half because I can't finish an entire one The staff were so nice! My friend tried practicing her Vietnamese and our server was kind enough to try and hold a conversation with her. The restaurant itself is super clean and modern. Will definitely be coming back for that beef carpaccio salad!! read more
This is my favorite Vietnamese restaurant in Oakland since I feel like they serve authentic dishes. Always amazing!!! I was afraid the quality will change because I just did a delivery but it was still so good when it arrived. We got: - Pork rice plate #18 - Chicken saute with eggplant - Shrimp with coconut milk curry - Chicken with spring rolls vermicelli bowl - Shrimp rolls I like everything but I would say my favorite is the shrimp with coconut milk curry, it has the good amount of spiciness. Everything is good for sharing btw, I would say one dish can be shared by 2 people especially if you're buying appetizers. Definitely will be coming back to try other dishes! read more
I cannot believe I have not gotten a chance to get to try this place before! I wish I knew about it a long time ago. I SERIOUSLY found my go to place for beef pho. I usually go for chicken pho but I had to try the beef. It was beyond over the top so tasty. The beef was so clean and lean and the broth was so fresh and light just the way I like it. I'm usually extremely picky when it comes to pho in general. I haven't found a good place out in East Bay or SF, you name it anywhere in the Bay Area like. I'm definitely going to be a a regular now. The service was very attentive and the people that worked there was so friendly!! I owe a big tip next time I come back, like I promise. I love how the place is cleaned inside, they even wrap their chopsticks so it keeps it sanitized. I absolutely love love that! Please don't ever shut down!! Or maybe just open another location somewhere??!! I can't wait to try other items or else I might just have to the same thing over and over. The aroma of the broth was so comforting, I love how they don't put MSG either because that stuff is so bad and it hurts my stomach. Makes me want a bowl of pho right now typing this! read more

First time ordering from this place through Doordash 2/24/2022, reviews said 4.9/5 on the app so I figured why not. I ordered the # 1 recommendation Chicken Pho - 2/10. Presentation disappointing, quality was missed, and flavor just was not there tonight. Out of all the times I've ordered Pho for take out, this is truly the first experience I've had where the noodles were at the bottom of the Chinese takeout box. Literally molded it's shape of the box and is not separable unless mashed down. Taking into consideration a 15 minute drive, the mistake lies on the packing. No bowl? Chicken on top of the noodles instead of being separately. read more

Being new to Oakland, I've been on the hunt for a new pho spot. After being disappointed with monster pho, I gave up on my search. Today I decided to order from pho 84 on doordash. Unfortunately, my dasher didn't pick up the rest of my order, (I wanted spring rolls), but the pho more than made up for it. I ordered the chicken pho with added vegetables. The veggies and noodles were SO fresh, the extra garnish was fresh, and the broth was incredibly tasty. I feel like the prices are a little hire than what I'm typically used to for Pho, but it was delicious. I will definitely be ordering from here again! read more

Ordered the #8 grilled chicken vermicelli bowl with crispy rolls and half order (love that they do this!) of shrimp spring rolls. Big portion...love that the crispy roll was huge! And the chicken was marinated really well. Delicious! The spring rolls were good. Wrapper at the end was a little thick, but still good. Service was great and friendly! read more
This place is always crowded and there is usually a wait when I walk by during peak lunch hours. They have a pretty large menu with lots of variety. I think you get more if you get the rice plates, which are huge. I'm a soup girl and usually go when it's cold so I've mainly eaten the pho. So far I've tried the beef and the chicken/seafood. The pho was decent but I have had better more authentic pho - I feel like it may be a bit Americanized. The broth is flavorful but the noodles are a little thick for my taste. The service is ok for the most part and somehow the wait is t as long as it appears. I am interested in trying more of the rice plates with eggs on top, garlic noodles, etc. but I would ideally like to share it with more people. Lastly, the prices are a little more expensive than other spots - probably due to location. read more

The interesting thing about Vietnamese food is it can be really inexpensive at some places for some garlic noodles, pho, some type of meat, and some imperial rolls. Then there is the other extreme where a Vietnamese restaurant is charging $60 plus dollars for crab and garlic noodles. Regardless of the cost, people pay it. To them, it's worth it. That being said Pho 84 is somewhere in the middle price-wise. I had lunch at Pho 84 with a group of four people. Three people in the group ordered vermicelli dishes and I was able to try a little of their food. Overall I would say three stars. I ordered a special item which was pork chops and garlic noodles. The garlic noodles really stood out. Tasty, savory, garlicky, delightful noodles of joy. The pork chops however were just pork chops, nothing special. Four stars for that dish. But the service was excellent. The restrooms are beyond clean. The restrooms even smell nice, better than the bathroom at my house so props for that. The dishes however are all overpriced in my opinion. For example the Pho is $14 here, and good Pho shouldn't cost that much in my eyes. So while Pho 84 gets knocked for the above average prices, they make up for in service and cleanliness for sure. A place worth checking out to see what middle of the road Vietnamese is like. read more

This spot felt like a hidden gem! I came with a group of friends after ice skating, and ordered the pho #1 with beef flank, beef balls, and tendon. The warm soup definitely felt refreshing after a long skating session, and I really liked the texture of the noodles as well. Great place! read more
Pho 84 is an uptown Oakland classic. I've been working in the area for over 12 years and this restaurant has always provided consistently good Vietnamese food. My favorites are the imperial rolls as appetizer (it says 3 but it comes out with basically 6 good sized shareable pieces) and the #22 (grilled chicken with very precisely four grilled prawns over special rice). The imperial rolls are not so greasy and the special rice is cooked in chicken broth with garlic and onions and is definitely worth the extra calories. The marinated/grilled chicken itself is really tasty. The portion size tends to be on the large side (not that there's ever any leftovers when I eat here but I've had people have a good size to-go box). I also wish that the prawns (I think it's more shrimp) were a little bigger. Service is OK but this place can get really, really busy. If you want to come for lunch, I would suggest coming around 11:30. There is usually a line at noon and it's forget about it at 12:30. Prices are slightly above average for an entree in the area now (expect to pay $20-$25 after tax and tip for an entree). Highly recommended. read more
TL;DR very modern pho place Usually, the classier the pho restaurant, the lower the quality. This is not the case for Pho 84. They are quite classy and quite good. The prices are higher than the average dingy pho place, but the quality is just as good. Everything is very clean and organized. The staff are nice and food comes out pretty fast. Solid Pho restaurant. Good quality meat and nice options on the menu for the non-pho person too. The special rice is a little on the bland side but is a nice base to the spicy curry special. We were looking for a place that takes reservations and was near the Paramount Theatre as we were attending a concert there and I found Pho 84, which I haven't visited in a few years. I made reservations with no problem and when we arrived about 20 minutes before our reservation, they had no problem seating us. We order 4 different dishes: #18 Three meats over rice, #19 Imperial Rolls with Chicken over Rice, #8 Imperial Rolls with Pork over vermicelli, and #49 Hoisin chicken. All were flavorful and hearty as we had to take part of our meals home. So next time we are in the area attending a concert, this will be our go to place! read more

The reviews are correct for this place! We just ordered DoorDash to our hotel. The taste is phenomenal! My wife is still sitting here talking about how much she loves it. We eat Pho just about everywhere we go and the taste of this one is the best, emperial rolls too. read more

This was my first time trying Pho and I loved it. The place was very nice and homey. I tried the Chicken pho. I went with 2 other people and felt the place was great for small groups of 3-6. I was attended right away and seated. I went on a Saturday night around 8pm. The service was pretty quick. The portion was huge, I took my left overs home and was able to enjoy it the next day. This was greatly priced as well. I would definitely want to visit this place again when I return to the West coast. read more

There was quite a wait to get seated during lunch on a Friday. To start, we ordered half an order of shrimp spring rolls. They came out pretty quickly. The vermicelli they use is great and their peanut sauce was pretty good. For the main meal, I ordered a Pho Bo which is their beef combo with rare flank stake, beef balls, etc. My boyfriend ordered the Pho Ga which is chicken based. It took awhile for our meals to come out. They gave a large portion of noodles but as we started eating them, they were already really soft and started breaking up. It seemed as if they were already sitting in the soup for a good amount of time. There wasn't anything special about their broths, they were just okay. I feel like they could've added more ingredients. For the price it felt like I was given so little. More noodles than anything else. read more

Felt a little cold coming on and this definitely hit the spot!! Big fan of the egg rolls for sure. I'm not a big soup person, but it's necessary when you have a cold! This might be some of the best pho I've had. Beef was solid & I'll be sure to get it again when I'm in the mood. Only minor critique is I'm not sure if the added shrimp was worth it, pretty bland. read more

WIN WIN every time! Food is fresh and delicious! This place has always been such a quality spot. Their calamari is awesome, their coconut curry is delicious and they cook their tofu nicely. Spring rolls and imperial rolls are also staples. Parking is horrible and most people just double park because it is located on a small, one way, 2 lane street.The best pho I have ever had! I have quite a few Vietnamese friends and have been spoiled with home cooked Pho . This gives all of them a run for their money . Great service and fast! Shrimp and eggplant is another great dish ! Overrated and overpriced. I met up with a couple friends for lunch last Tuesday. Since it was a bit chilly that afternoon, one of them suggested Pho 84 for some pho. This Zagat-rated restaurant (2013-15) is located near the corner of 17th and Franklin. When you see the neon Vietnamese map on the window, then you are at the right place. We walked in at around just before 11:30am and were greeted immediately by one of the servers, who seated us at one of the tables on the left hand side. The interior was clean and elegantly decorated with beautiful large paintings and Asian musical instruments. Interior lighting was on the dimmer side and tables were squeezed tight together, which made a big guy like me feel a bit uncomfortable. Water was brought to us promptly by our server. As I was checking the menu, I noticed they have a number of specialty entrees along with the usual Vietnamese fare. I am from the school of "Order the #1 when in doubt" so that's exactly what I did - I got the Pho Bo (beef pho, large/$14). My friends opted for the Pho Ga (#2, chicken pho, medium/$12) and the Grilled Chicken Vermicelli Bowl with Imperial Rolls (#8, $14). One of them also got a Tra Gung (sweetened ginger black tea, $3.50). Our food arrived in about 10 minutes. My beef pho was a big disappointment, especially at $14. The size was about the same as a medium at other restaurants. The broth color was cloudy and it tasted a bit of the sweet side. For meat toppings, it had a few slices of rare steak and brisket, along with a piece of tendon and a few halved beef balls. Taste wise, I didn't find anything special about them. Noodles were overcooked. Overall, the quality did not match the price. The chicken pho didn't appear too exciting either. I saw a few pieces of chicken breast floating in a bowl of darker-than-usual broth. When I asked my friend who had it, he didn't appear too enthusiastic but said it was "okay". The grilled chicken vermicelli bowl looked more appetizing than the noodle soups. It was presented nicely and the person who had it had generally positive comments about it. Service was decent. Our server was friendly and did refill our water midway through the meal. IMHO, I am not sure why this place was Zagat rated. Despite the nice setting, they charge premium prices for very mediocre food. If you are in search of authentic Vietnamese food, go to San Jose or better yet the other side of Lake Merritt, where a number of authentic Vietnamese restaurants are located. For me, this place is one-and-done. Certainly not going to eat here again. BONUS MATERIAL: - Get there early. The place is busy during lunchtime. - Major credit cards accepted. - Street, garage, and private lot parking in the area. - Do not recommend going at night. This place was good but not sure why the reviews are praising this place so much. It deserves a 3.5 star.. portion is good and it tastes good. But what...?! Has anyone here even been to San Jose because a million places taste just like this and at a much lower price. This place is probably more Americanized for the visitors and doesn't have a huge selection but still, tastes good. I got a hu tieu and it had good flavor and a good amount of chicken and prawns. Again, similar to a lot of other pho places. My friend ordered a rice plate and was in LOVE with it. Not hating on this place at all.. I would definitely come back. Service is very friendly but they're missing a lot of things here to make it a great viet restaurant. I just don't really understand the Zagat awards on the door. read more
