I needed to meet a friend nearby, so we decided on this cute little place with authentic Vietnamese pho. It's small, but surprisingly roomy, with quick friendly service and lovely varied art arrayed on the walls in little themed sets. First, i tried their intriguing tart salted plum lemonade! An awakening flavor without overwhelming the meal. What a lovely red-plum color! I loved their bright fresh shrimp spring rolls, (gỏi cuốn tôm) of a generous number of medium-size chilled shrimp, with al-dente vermicelli, crisp fresh bean sprouts, cucumber, and lettuce, competing fresh bright mint and tart pickled shredded daikon and carrots, all wrapped in nearly transparent firm but ready-to-melt rice paper. Besides the nice light crunch of the shrimp, what sets this apart is the savory slightly sweet peanut dipping sauce. I can't get enough! Their fried calamari (Muc Chien) is tender with enough resistance, delicately coated in a simple lightly seasoned salt & pepper thin crust, with a lightly seasoned lemon sauce. You wont find a better lighter calamari. I had their pho chicken (Phở Gà (Bánh Phở Tươi)), tender strips of juicy chicken breast and flat noodles in lightly salty chicken broth, that I garnished from the side-dish of crispy fresh bean sprouts, minty basil, squeezed bright lime, and for me just a touch of fresh jalapeno, cut to bring some heat. First time at this place and I wasn't disappointed. I could smell the food cooking from outside and it just stirred up my cravings. I loved the simple and clean wood look inside from the tables and chairs. The shrimp roll appetizers were good especially with the peanut dipping sauce and some spicy pepper sauce for the second bite, yum. The Vermicelli with chicken was lovely. The chicken was so tasty and grilled to perfection I could eat and whole bowl of just that chicken. The service was very friendly and prompt. Ambiance here is nice. Boyfriend and I came in the afternoon and there were only two tables. The meats in the clay pot tasted good, but my only complaint for this dish is that there were way more meats than rice provided. The pho tasted standard so no complaints about that. The only thing I ordered that I did not enjoy was their pork belly bánh mì. For a bánh mì that is nearly $11, there was barely any pork belly or pickled carrots and daikon in there. And it seemed like they used regular mayonnaise instead of the traditional Vietnamese aioli. I've have always wanted to come here after passing by it on my way to the market. We finally stopped in for lunch when they opened. I ordered the combination pho and shared the gyoza with my son. The pho broth was delicious. The beef flavor and spices were the right combination. The portion size of the pho was satisfying. It was the right amount of beef meats and noodles. The gyoza was also good. The skin was a bit thicker than expected, but it was fried crisp. The pork filling was tasty. My son ended eating most of it and gave his approval with a thumbs up. I am happy to have gone here and will be visiting more often. read more

Decided to give them another try after being very disappointed with the lack of flavor in the beef pho broth twice, so ordered a vermicelli bowl with shrimp and my partner had one with pork and shrimp. He got 2 little shrimp, I got 3. In the whole $19 bowl. And the deep flavor that I love in Vietnamese food is just not there. With the sticky table (barf) and complete lack of customer service (had to go up and ask for a to-go container, never checked on us once, and then AGAIN had to get up and go get our check), we're done. Delicious food! I got a pretty basic order to share with my partner : imperial pork egg rolls, chicken banh mi and chicken pho. The rolls were fresh, flavorful and had great texture. The pho was simple but comforting. The broth was mild but layered with flavors, the noodles were well cooked and it came with bean sprouts, a generous amount of scallions, basil and jalapeños. The chicken was slightly tough breast meat, but most places use breast meat so this isn't really an issue here specifically. The banh mi was a triumph. Pate, mayo, grilled chicken (not dry at all), fresh pickled veggies and toasted bread. I loved it! The staff is very kind and they do a great job. Despite the proximity to the best pho in San Jose/South Bay, finding great pho in Berkeley/SF can be such a struggle. We stopped by Le Pho on my most recent visit to Berkeley and I was pleasantly surprised. We dropped by during a quiet Friday at noon. The restaurant itself is bright and welcoming with plenty of natural sunlight shining in through the windows. The menu is extensive and offers pho, rice plates, vermicelli salads, and a few other entrees as well. I ordered the "build your own" pho with rare steak, brisket, and meatball. The broth here is noticeably more complex and satiating than others I've had in the East Bay. They are very generous on the protein which is much appreciated. We also ordered the fried egg rolls and a pork chop broken rice plate to share. Both were delicious and we even had a few customers walk over to ask what we ordered. I use to come here often. Great food decent price but today the waitress who took my order for some reason didn't place it. So I waited about 30mins to see if I would get my food but nothing. People who were sat after me got their food so I decided to leave. I let the owner know and he didn't really care. He was busy doing take out orders. We ordered some shrimp spring rolls (Shrimp Spring Rolls (Gỏi Cuốn Tôm) and they came with peanut sauce. There were 6 rolls and I would classify them as medium sized. We also ordered the number 26 (Pho Flank, Brisket, Tendon and Tripe (Phở Nạm Gầu Gân Sách). Both the spring rolls and pho were really good. I would definitely order them again. I also ordered some green tea and I was very happy with the cup size. It was quite large, definitely more than enough. Inside the restaurant is spacious. I am Vietnamese and this place isn't too bad for Berkeley, probably one of the best but it is still pretty under average tasting. The decor in the restaurant was very cute as it was filled with a Vietnam theme. I got the pho dac biet and it was 6.8/10. It definitely gets rid of the pho craving. We ordered delivery, and found the food to be lackluster. Our fresh spring rolls with shrimp had very little rice noodles and quite a bit of lettuce--and large sticks of cucumber. The shrimp were fine, but they should've had less veg and more rice noodles. They were a little bland, and the peanut sauce tasted like it was cut with too much hoisin, or watered down. $16. Not a great value. My vermicelli salad was loaded with way too much lettuce. There were a few shreds of carrot, but I didn't detect any daikon, and there was very little herb action. Maybe there were a couple of pieces of mint, but it was almost undetectable. If there was any basil, I certainly didn't see it or taste it. The sauce was lackluster. It should've been bright from lime juice, salty from fish sauce, and sweet from sugar. It tasted almost watered down. Too sweet, without any bright, salty notes. For $21 I received one crispy spring roll, two shrimp, and a very small portion of pork. Not a good value. My husband got the mixed rice noodles with various proteins. There was too much cabbage or lettuce--hard to tell what it was, and not a whole lot of noodles. And it was sweet. The proteins were a little skimpy, but not as skimpy as they were in my vermicelli salad. I believe this was about $20. We got the Pad Thai. Which would've been totally fine, except it was blazingly hot, almost as if a whole lot of Sriracha was added to it. It ruined the dish for us. This place is so tasty! The service is great as well. Despite the name, I'd say their dumplings are way more worth the trip than their pho, but that's just a personal preference. All the food is great though, you can't go wrong in my opinion. Good portions as well. Parking can sometimes be difficult since it's right on San Pablo, but you could theoretically park in the chipotle/REI parking lot across the street. The interior is cozy but not fancy. Sort of hole in the wall-ish but I'd say everybody in the area knows of this place. Definitely worth a try! read more

Food: The clay pot is to die for. The flavors blend in with the hardened rice at the bottom of the bowl. Specifically the Mongolian beef clay pot is one of the best I have had in a long time, the beef and rice, really the entire bowl is mouth watering. We live near by and this is one of our favorites default spots when we need a bit to eat. My partner loves the Banh Mi sandwiches at lunch and I tried one the other day and the chicken was so freshly cooked. My favorite is the Pho Bowl with variety of meats. Was craving pho so decided to check out this place. We ordered take out and the process was painless. We called, made the order, and picked up 20 mins later. We ordered the #20 and #24 pho. The pho was good! Light and clean broth but the depth of flavor was lacking. Wasn't anything special but wasn't bad either. If you are in the area and craving pho then this will do. For the food, personally think it was ok, it's what I expected for a Pho around Emeryville/ Berkeley area. I never write bad reviews. However, I have to write that I just encountered the worst service at a restaurant that I can remember. I made a point of patronizing this restaurant because it is around the corner from my house and I wanted to support it. I entered the restaurant about 27 minutes before closing. The first waitress came over and said to me "You know we're closing soon". I said yes I know. She came back less than a minute later to take my order and was visibly annoyed when I said I needed a minute. Another waitress headed over to the table and the first thing she said was "You know we close in 20 minutes" I said I was ready to order. The pho came very quickly and tasted fine - I am not an expert but it was hearty and good. As a large party was getting up to leave, two waitresses were standing over them with bus carts waiting for them to leave. They put the plates etc in the bins in a noisy manner. I rushed through my meal and left 6 minutes before closing as they continued crashing the plates into the bins. Typically, when a restaurant closes at 9pm, it means that the kitchen stops serving food, sometimes they lock the door to keep patrons coming in. They typically let the customers finish their dinner in peace - perhaps do some quiet clean up. It seems that to this restaurant staff and owners, closing at 9pm on a Saturday night means that is when they want to leave the restaurant, and they don't care about the experience of the people still eating before the restaurant has even closed. Nothing wrong with banh mi, but sometimes I want a nice Vietnamese plate of meat, rice, and vegetables. My gf and I were in the area and popped in for a meal and I am so glad we did. It was the afternoon so the place wasn't very busy. The menu has all the Vietnamese classics I'm always craving. I got the com thit nuong (rice and pork) while my gf got the bun thit nuong (vermicelli noodles and pork) and absolutely devoured the plates. Only thing missing was the green onion oil my dad makes for me at home. Since going there, we've also ordered their food delivered to our apartment. We got pho ga (chicken) and pho tai (beef) and they each came very nicely and securely packaged so that nothing would spill. It's a little weird bc there's no bowl to pour the soup into (the soup comes in a container separate from the pho components which are packaged in a cardboard container I don't feel comfortable pouring soup into.) So we got separate bowls to assemble the pho. They each also came with a little baggy full of basil and bean sprouts + a wedge of lime. My gf absolutely loves their salted plum lemonade. Highly recommend giving it a try but order a glass of water to go with it. Note to people who haven't had salted plum lemonade before: the plum is very salty!! Do not attempt to eat it!!
