Probably not the most authentic Vietnamese Cuisine that I have ever tried. Nevertheless, when it comes to fresh ingredients and tasty food- this restaurant hits the mark. I chose the honey chicken fresh-roll sandwich that came standard with jalapeños, cilantro,cucumbers, and pickled carrots. You also get a side of namnam sauce on the side which has a subtle spicy kick to it. This sandwich was delicious and priced at just under $10.00. My son who follows a gluten-free diet chose the fresh-roll bowl with lemongrass pork. The bowl arrived with the same ingredients as my sandwich - plus onions, purple cabbage and broccolini. I was able to sneak a bite of his bowl and it was delicious. I will give this place a solid 4 stars. The ordering system is all done through a self service electronic touch pad so you won't be able to ask the employees any questions regarding the menu. However , there is a handy chart near the ordering station that covers all the dietary facts about their food in case you have food allergies. My son and I found this extremely helpful. Freshroll is a fresh and convenient restaurant I love stopping by for a quick lunch! I absolutely love getting their freshrolls with a different variety of proteins and their nam nam saice. Would I consider this the most authentic place? ...not particularly Does it hit the spot when I want something on the lighter and healthier side? Sure Would I come back again - especially when I'm with a group of friends for a snackpass party deal? ...Absolutely! I finally tried out freshroll and got the vermicelli noodle bowl with lemongrass pork. The noodles were a bit thicker than I anticipated. I also requested for the NamNam sauce on the side. Next time, I will request the sauce mixed in because the sauce container wasn't even to coat all the food....which means that the portion size was a lot more than I was expecting! I also really liked the pork...very flavorful and not dried out. I'm not sure if I would go for that sauce again though. It was too mayo-heavy for me. But overall, I really enjoyed this meal and would probably get the same thing again. It was actually so much food that it served as two meals for me! I placed an order through grubhub for two tofu spring rolls because I had a $5 off gift card. The order was completed pretty quickly (within 15 minutes). I waited for my order inside the establishment which consisted of a few ordering screens and some tables and chairs. It wasn't too busy when I went, but there was some waiting involved. The spring rolls themselves were good. The veggies tastes fresh and the tofu was flavorful. I wish they had some type of fresh herbs inside cause it would make them better. The nam nam sauce is soooo yummy and compliments the rolls nicely. I do think that they are pretty expensive at $5 a piece and probably won't go out of my way to stop by here again for this reason. If it's convenient, it's not a bad spot for a quick, somewhat inexpensive meal. However, I wouldn't necessarily go out of my way for it. We went with banh-mis, both the shrimp and pork variety. A forgettable roll filled with fresh crunchy vegetables and protein. I was more into the pork than the shrimp as it had a bit more flavor. But in the end, mostly due to the bread, I'd forgo the banh-mi next time and opt for the bowl. Was craving a salad and decided to look some places up on Yelp. This place popped up and looked pretty good. You pick the flavors you want, pick your base, protein, and sauce. Or you can make it yourself with your favorite mix ins. I ordered a Saigon Swag bowl w/mixed greens, honey soy chicken, and NamNam sauce. The bowl came with broccolini, fried garlic, pickled daikon/carrots, jalepenos, red onions, cilantro, and cucumbers. Basically everything that would be included in a traditional banh mi. The ingredients tasted fresh and the Nam Nam sauce went well with the salad and other ingredients. I had them add the sauce into the bowl instead of on the side. It was a very fresh and light lunch and I would definitely go back. Better than a "normal" salad. I also got the mint lychee Jasmine tea. It was refreshing and lightly sweetened. One of my favorite deals here is their $10 combo which comes with taro chips, chicken bone broth, and a mini fresh roll sandwich. Really affordable and a great way to get a nice meal with multiple sides that fill you up. I've even come here just to pick up their taro chips for events because they're fresher than the ones you get in a store and aren't too expensive. I'm definitely considering catering from them in the future because they have a wide variety to choose from. Their pork is always my go-to protein and Namnam sauce is tasty as well. Service is quick because they use Snackpass so you can interface with that ordering system for ordering in advance, any item specifications, and rewards. It's a small joint that doesn't have a lot of seating, but it's clean, has cold water for customers, and fairly quickly service. After a weekend getaway in Yosemite, I was desperately craving some substantial Asian food. What better to satisfy this craving than a banh mi? I'm on the quest to find the best banh mi in Berkeley and Freshroll just might be the reigning champ! Using Doordash, I ordered my lemongrass banh mi along with some chicken broth for delivery. Both were superb!! Banh mi's are sometimes a hit or miss in the fact that the bread can be too crunchy and crumbly, leaving a plethora of bread crumbs on the table when you're done. However, Freshroll's baguette is crunchy with just the right amount of pillowiness. Their NamNam sauce (a chipotle aioli type sauce) is also BOMB and might be why their sandwich is wayy better than Nom Nom's which is right across the street. Freshroll is also super generous with the meat and pickled veggies. On a separate note, the broth was also very delicious. Although I couldn't tell if it really took 8 hours to prepare, it still tasted clean and not too salty. I've been reading reviews that fruit flies tend to congregate in front of the brick and mortar store, so perhaps takeout or delivery is your best bet. If you download the Snackpass app, I believe there's a 15% off first-time order discount! Every time I order off the app, they always finish my order within 5 minutes! I always create my own freshBowl: Vermicelli noodle base, sesame-lime tofu (sometimes I get the Lemongrass Pork, which is also very delicious), peanut sauce on the side, cucumber, purple cabbage, pickled carrots/daikon, jalapeno, green onion, and I added broccolini for an extra cost. The freshBowl is LOADED with veggies. And when I say loaded, I mean loaded. You can easily get your daily intake of veggies from this meal. And, it's very affordable! About $10 for a nutritious, filling and healthy meal. Portions are also 10/10. I don't feel too stuffed after finishing the bowl, and it's also great fuel that'll last me a couple hours! I've always gotten take out because of COVID, and they package the bowl really securely. They saran wrap the bowl, include utensils wrapped in a napkin, all in a portable brown paper bag. I usually pick the chicken as my main protein but the pork is also yummy! The taro chips are made fresh and are so crunchy! It's always a must have for me to get them. They pair so well with the NamNam sauce too. Their drinks are pretty bomb too! I've tried the Vietnamese coffee and the Lychee Mint tea (not overly sweet - just how I like it). On colder days, I opt in for their pho broth which is comforting and warms me up. The staff moved quickly to make my food so I never waited in line for long. I recently visited the restaurant Fresh Roll in Berkeley in hopes of fulfilling my craving for spring rolls along with a bánh mì sandwich, I normally order from "Sf's Fresh Roll". When I entered into the restaurant, I was greeted by swarming flies (4+) Immediately I came to realize that, no one working for this particular establishment spoke English. The workers were all Spanish speaking despite this being a Vietnamese inspired restaurant. NO ONE WORKING AT THIS LOCATION SPOKE ENGLISH!! Even with me trying to explain special instructions for my order the workers were unable to comprehend. There was an employee sitting down and one behind the counter neither acknowledged anything regarding taking my order they replied "NO ENGLISH" and continued socializing amongst themselves. Delicious and healthy! I ordered the Ginger Basil Limeade (~$3) and Garlic Shrimp Freshroll with a peanut sauce (~$4.50) on a quick dinner date with friends. The Freshroll was...indeed a very fresh roll! Crunchy veggies, cold rice noodles, and the rice paper/wrap itself was not too sticky. However, I ordered the garlic shrimp thinking there would be more than what I got, or at least bigger shrimp than what I received. There were about 4 or 5 small quarter-sized shrimp total for an additional ~$1.50, so looking back now it was definitely not worth the extra money. The limeade was also fresh and delicious! It doesn't look the most appetizing coming out, but I wish the cups were larger because I could drink it all day long! Sweet and yummy. I tried my friend's chicken bowl, and the Namnam sauce was absolutely delicious on the chicken. It was a pretty large portion as well, so I'll probably get the same thing if I do go back again. Tried the rolls and the taro chips. Acceptable and refreshing meal, though I'm going to go on and perhaps nitpick some because for the price ($5/roll, $4/chips) and portions on the smaller side a place would have to knock it out of the park for me to revisit. The wrapper was chewy/Q in a satisfying way, and the veggies tasted fresh. There weren't any herbs, which some people I know would've appreciated, though I missed the taste some. Also tried the chicken and the pork, which were slightly dry, hence why the tofu was best. The nuoc cham-esque vinaigrette was my favorite, salty and sour with garlic pieces and chilis. The peanut sauce felt a little bit blander in comparison. Taro chips were okay--also felt a little undersalted plus were a little toastier than I expected, but having the textural option was cool. I got delivery so can't speak on the setting but everything was packaged well: stapled bag, cling film covered broth which I did not try yet. No sauce or soup spills at all. All in all, might revisit if a friend requested but would not go out of my way to come here without the stacking promotions I had for delivery since you could probably get similar offerings for less elsewhere. read more
