    22. Pad See Ew Chicken Noodle
    May W.

I have been looking for the best pad see ew and it is here! Rice noodles are cooked perfectly with generous amount of chicken, and sweet egg. The place is no fuss and filled with college students. In Berkeley Asian ghetto with nostalgic college vibes.

I will not exaggerate here at all; The absolute BEST Thai food I've ever had and it's not close. The Pad-See-Yu with no bean sprouts is genuinely unforgettable. Such a sweet lady working at the front, amazing quick service, incredible food. Trust me get the Pad-See-Yu it is otherworldly, I've had other dishes and they are just as great.

I tried out Thai Basil Cuisine on a whim since i was craving Thai food. The restaurant was hidden away a bit in a mini Plaza off the main street. I ordered the Pad Kee Mao with chicken. I found that the chicken was kinda dry, and found that the flavor of the noodles was a bit lacking, and left a bit of a burnt aftertaste as well. Overall, I was a bit dissapointed in the Pad Kee Mao.

Best of Berkeley for many years

Every time I'm in town, I always stop by here and get my Thai fix. I recently vacationed in Thailand and had some Rad Na in Bangkok. So I had been searching for an authentic Rad Na ever since and finally found it at Thai Basil. The Rad Na here is SO GOOD! very flavorful gravy with just the right amount of burnt taste on the rice noodles. Ahhh.. I'm hungry just thinking about it.

My go-to while I was in college for both value and quality! The staff is very straightforward but that's exactly what thrives in busy areas like south Berkeley. Cash payment is preferred but you can pay with card at the kiosks. Food comes out quick and is perfect for a late night dinner or in between class lunch with friends. Tons of drink options in this plaza as well so Thai Basil pairs great with your favorite boba shop!

    22. Pad See Ew Chicken Noodle

Not the greatest pad see ew ever, but was still pretty good. Noodles were cooked well and were just the right amount of sweet. Unfortunately the chicken was not very flavorful, and was pretty rubbery too. Broccoli was also disappointing, and felt under cooked and was hard to bite into. Chicken and broccoli brought it down, especially given the price point.

I got the pad see ew, and it was good, though chicken was a bit overcooked. My low rating is because they only offer plastic containers, even if you eat in. I explicitly asked for no plastic because we planned to eat in, and the lady said yes and then gave us plastic containers in plastic bags with plastic forks and disposable chopsticks. Furthermore, they won't let you dispose of the containers in the restaurant (see image) and have a sign, virtue signaling, that they would like to save the environment and that customers should not order containers if eating in. It's a lie! Disappointing, not at all environmentally conscious and generating tons of waste. Food was decent but not worth wasting so much plastic when there are plenty of other good/better thai food options in Berkeley that let you use plates.

Basil chili chicken with fried egg

Thai Basil in Berkeley offers a convenient option for a quick Thai food fix. I tried their Basil Chili Chicken with fried egg, which was a decent portion size. The chicken itself was cooked well, but the overall flavor lacked the punch I was hoping for. The ambiance of the restaurant is pretty basic, with simple décor and generic Asian-style furniture. It's clean and comfortable enough for a casual meal, but the inside space may feel very crowded when you have a few occupied tables. There is open seating outside the restaurant, which is shared by all the other restaurants in that section, so it's available on a first come, first served basis. The service was fast but the staff could have been friendlier. When my friends and I asked for to-go boxes and utensils/napkins, we got an angry look from the staff. Please also note that the restaurant doesn't have a bathroom for its customers, so you'll have to find some place else if you really need to go. Overall, Thai Basil is an average option. The food is decent, but a little pricey for what you get. If you're in the area and looking for a quick bite, it's not a bad choice, but there are probably better Thai restaurants in Berkeley worth exploring.

This has been one of my all time favorite Thai places since college days. I love the online ordering capabilities for a quick pick up. Pla Rad Pik the fried fish dish has the most awesome garlic Basil sauce. Don't miss out. The classic pad Thai and pad see ew are always good.

    Menu

Got the chicken fried rice was really flavorful!! Seasoned just right and the portion size was really big! You order on the kiosk when you enter so it's pretty fast. Didn't have to wait that long and inside is really nice and cozy while you wait. Definitely would eat here again!

Inside was so charming in nicely decorated. Service was fast and friendly. Our server was patient as we were a little indecisive and our group had a few food allergies. Food was delicious! We had a few folks from out of town, but we all agreed - hands down the best Thai egg rolls we've ever had! Crispy, filled with flavor and just a little hint of spice, not spicy at all, just perfect pepper? Our pad see ew wasn't greasy and meat was fresh and delicious, not fatty at all. Thai ice teas were refreshing, NOT fully iced or too sweet, like you sometimes get - great balance. Red chicken curry was perfect and so was soup and fried rice - all cooked as requested! I'll definitely go back to this place and recommend that you do, too!!

I also ordered the spicy basil chicken stir fry. Both were okay, nothing to rave about. I do love the spice on the basil chicken it was perfect. But for the spicy lovers out there you may want to ask for some chili oil to make it more spicer as its not as spicy as i thought it would be. But still good! Maybe I'll have to come try this restaurant in person vs delivery.

With my luck, my car would smell like hello kitty for weeks. Anyhow, I found Mẹ Và Con on yelp, a mother-daughter owned resto that opened in 2024. They serve bánh khọt and have outdoor seating so we headed over. Thankfully, we arrived before the Sunday dinner rush (~5:45 pm) and before the parking lot was filled. Rezzies are accepted (via phone). M E N U Viet Cuisine with some elevated, modern twists (no specific regional specialty). I appreciate their twist (tangerine sauce instead of nước chấm) but it was too one note for me...IMO, it needed acid and herbs. Plus, I miss the texture of peanuts. * Bánh Khọt: Viet Mini Pancakes w/ shrimp, coconut milk batter, herbs, pickles ($24): https://tinyurl.com/34nx7sat - Served at dinner only Fav dish of the night, the savory bánh khọt was delicately crispy and slightly custardy in the center with a snappy shrimp drizzled with fragrant scallion oil. It came with romaine, mint, and perilla leaves neatly layered for easy wrapping. The lettuce was a bit soft and soggy tho, and I think they forgot the pickled veggies. Served with a tiny portion of tangy sweet nước chấm. * Bò Lúc Lắc: Shaking Beef w/ soy, garlic, onion, cherry tomato, arugula ($26): https://tinyurl.com/3rkpukct Meltingly tender cubes of filet mignon but light on the seasoning and aromatics so it was bland. Chunks of pork belly are caramelized in sugar and braised in coconut soda and fish sauce - rich, savory with a good ratio of lean meat to fat (4 pieces). Wish they used more braising liquid when warming up, as some pieces were a bit dry. S E R V I C E Warm, friendly hospitality.
