I have NEVER written a Yelp review, and it is unfortunate that this experience is what finally made me take the time to do so. I have also never felt the need to publicly speak on racism in my life, but what happened here was too blatant to ignore. For context, I am a student at University of California, Berkeley and a PM at a Fortune 500 company. I say that only to make clear that I am a professional person who understands how to treat others with respect and how basic customer service should work. I came in for a pickup order and stood there attempting multiple times to get the employee's attention. She ignored me repeatedly, even looking directly in my direction without acknowledging me. Then I heard her say hello, and for a moment assumed she was finally speaking to me. Instead, she intentionally greeted and assisted a couple who had just walked in behind me. After helping them, she again looked my way and continued to avoid acknowledging me. In that moment, the treatment felt deliberate and discriminatory. When she finally addressed me, the interaction remained hostile. She appeared suspicious of whether the pickup order was actually mine, despite me giving the correct name that was already listed on the receipt and not visible to me beforehand. Beyond the service, the food itself was equally disappointing. I ordered the orange chicken, and it was some of the driest, lowest-quality chicken I have had anywhere. I have traveled extensively and eaten food all over the world, and it is rare to experience food this poor combined with service this disrespectful. This was an embarrassing experience for a business located near University of California, Berkeley. There are many better options nearby, and I would strongly recommend spending your money elsewhere. No one should have to deal with treatment like this or pay for a meal like this. read more

I got the 3 item combo plate amd ordered it to-go. The food tasted like many other chinese takeout restaurants. I got the brocolli beefI, laoganma chicken, and sichuan chicken in chili oilt was very greasy but the chicken was good. The laoganma chicken was my favorite out of the 3 but if you get it I'd just be careful because there might be small bones. The brocolli tasted good but there was hardly any beef and I actually dont think the pieces I did find were beef. They do provide very generous portions for a decent price. We absolutely loved every dish! This place caters to people who know Szechuan cuisine very well and it's all about the food. You scan a QR code and order from your phone. You can keep adding to your other until you check out. The place is very casual but spacious. We had mapu tofu, tan tan noodles (dan dan noodles), eggplant, green beans and pork dumplings in chili oil. It was a ton of food... more than the three of us could eat, so we took some to go. Everything we tried was perfect. The spices and oils were a celebration of Szechuan food, with plenty of Szechuan peppercorn. Such wonderful flavors! We were so happy we came here. I find it surprising that I haven't already reviewed this place. It is legit my favorite restaurant. I even have my birthday here every year. Their toothpick lamb is absolutely outstanding. They have fantastic wontons and spicy oil. I'm not going to list all the delicious dishes because I've never had anything there that I didn't think was absolutely phenomenal. Amazingly, it's never packed. The service is always good. And even thinking about this place makes me hungry. As far as ambiance, it's your typical upscale Chinese restaurant. I used to come here almost once every week when I used to live in Berkeley. Visited after 7 years. Honestly a little disappointed. But still pretty good. We ordered the sautéed green bean, spicy chicken with Mexican pepper and rice noodles with chicken. The green bean is the star, very very nice. The spicy chicken is ok although chicken is a bit dry. The rice noodles is good albeit bland and we asked for chili oil as a sauce to eat it with. The service is very fast, waiter is prompt and helpful. Looking forward to trying out other menu items. I remember eating well here a few years ago. Definitely gone downhill. Now they have an annoying QR code menu that takes forever to scroll through or around. 3rd rate dan dan noodles. A clump of thin spaghetti-like noodles in a thin brown sauce and two little pieces of gai lan (or something similar) 3rd rate dry scallion pancakes. Chengdu Style is a staple of Sichuan cuisine in Berkeley. Having been here since before a lot of the newer Chinese restaurants, it's been a consistent place to get solid Chinese food. Some of the highlights are the Sichuan classic Sichuan boiled fish (水煮鱼) which is a large bowl of tender fish slices in a spicy chili broth. Eaten by mixing with rice, you can't go wrong with this dish. Other highlights include the sliced pork in chili oil, which is a cold dish but packs a nice kick with the chili oil spice. Mapo tofu is another one of the classic Sichuan dishes, however, this particular dish is a bit bland and lacks the numbing spice necessary to make it worth-while. Overall, Chengdu Style is a solid spot to get Chinese food. In addition to ordering from the menu, you can also go straight to the counter to get some of the pre-made dishes, making it a quick lunch/dinner option as well. read more

One of my favorite go-to spots for lunch. Super close to campus with amazing, authentic Chinese food, large portions, and cheap prices. To be honest, the food itself probably isn't 5 stars and more 4 stars. However, I am bias. I love their options, portions, and price. Food is ready super quickly. It's a "lunch line" layout. You can choose 2 or 3 dishes alongside rice, fried rice, or noodles. There is also an option for a side of soup. I normally get a choose 3 lunch special combo - white rice with cabbage, pork belly, and something new. Again, flavors are flavoring and Chinese food is nostalgia-ing. I'm super full after. Came to Chengdu Style on Wednesday around noon and it was half filled with students. Most ppl come and order the plate meal from the counter, sorta like panda express assembly line. The interior was clean and bright. There is only street parking. I told the staff that i was ordering from the menu and she directed me to a table. I ordered the boiled fish fillet and the cheng du pork chops (it's more like chopped spare ribs). The boiled fish came in a large portion. There were plenty of fish fillets in the bowl. It was not as spicy as I expected. The boiled fish was delicious 5 out of 5. The ribs were okay since i had way better version of it before in Irvine and in Houston. The ribs were deep fried and then stir fried with spices. I rate the ribs 3.5 out of 5. read more

The most authentic Chinese food you can get in Berkeley. The food is good, but if you don't/can't appreciate oily food I would ask them for items that are less so. I should've known what to expect as soon as I walked in and saw the cafeteria style counter of pre-made food that the staff here encouraged me to get. I was going to be generous and give this place 3 stars in context of what it is....a student focused food place that's more about filling up than high quality food. But then a service faux pas earned them a 1 star review. Although they give you decent portions here, the flavor of the food isn't very good and they use waaay too much oil. The dish that I ordered was covered in more oil than sauce which tasted like just a bit of soy sauce. Not sophisticated in any way. Being generous, the food is 2.5 stars at best, and that's taking into the the context of what this place is...cafeteria student-focused food to fill people up. There's very little table service here since most of the customers generally seem to get their food from the cafeteria style counter. You're also able to order food from the tables using a QR code which is what I did. So you don't expect a lot from service here, but here's why they get one star....while I was paying for my meal at the cash register and getting a to-go box for my left overs, the one waitress there threw my leftovers away. I didn't realize that she had done it until I walked back to my table and found that my food was gone. Half the food that I ordered was still on the plate when she threw it out. When I looked at the waitress, and she realized that I was planning to take the leftovers home, she simply said "sorry" and that was the end of that. Frankly, she probably did me a favor by throwing out the oily not-great-tasting food that I probably would've eaten out my ethic of not wasting food. Still, all of this culminates in a poor experience at this place that I will not be going back to. read more

this is probably the best/most authentic chinese restaurant in berkeley - my first-generation immigrant chinese parents come here every time they visit berkeley. great place to take family but also great place to dine with large groups in general at the circular tables (they take reservations). there's a lot of seating both indoors and outdoors. it gets pretty busy after 1 pm for the lunch rush though. they have a QR code at the tables to order online, but you can also order in person if you'd prefer that. the food is pretty spicy bc it's szechuan, but you can ask for spice adjustments/recommendations for non spicy food. i LOVE the sautéed sliced cumin lamb, probably one of the best chinese dishes i've had at any restaurant. green beans are always a classic as well. can't recommend this place enough! super close to campus as well. read more

I ordered today from Chengdu Style. I ordered the pork ribs Chengdu style, rice and the sauteed potatoes. A couple of minutes after I ordered, I called them to change the order because I had read the description more thoroughly of Chengdu Style and thought it might be too spicy for me, I could not understand the woman who answered the phone and she couldn't understand me. I finally talked to some one else and thought I made it clear to him how I wanted the order changed. He told me the order was on its way to me already, which was an hour early and so couldn't be changed. The first person I talked to first called a few minutes later. Again, we were unable to understand each other, so I don't know what she had to say. The order came at the time I had scheduled it. The pork dish was too spicy and the potatoes were ok but nothing special. I doubt I'll order from them again. Bad communication and didn't make the change I had requested. Oh, and to top it off I didn't get the discount I was promised (though it showed before I paid - cost me $36 rather than $24!). read more

This was an interesting take. I always saw the location as being isolated and almost with no actions. I kept passing by, observing the place that it is in fact open. As I walked up the stairs there's an outside patio and you have to further walk straight until two double doors. Once entered the place was very quiet for a Friday. In these times QR codes are becoming a trend to view menus and even put in an order along with your table number. It's a really odd setup and the ambience seems very detached from the rest of the area and city. I ordered the wonton soup and some type of noodles. Surprisingly everything was very good.
