Quick service and great selection! I was pleased to see some familiar menu items, but also appreciated the mix of more authentic dishes I haven't heard of before. The Beef w/ Broccoli was tasty and vegetables still crunchy despite being dunked with a flavorful gravy! The Spicy Chicken Wings were packed with flavor and heat, especially the onions and garlic cloves that were stir-fried on top. The Pork Fried Rice had a nice wok, stir-fried flavor and with decent meat portions. Orders are placed online by scanning a code on the table, but payment was standard with a bill the waiters will drop at the table. It's well in the city and by the Berkeley campus, so street parking may be hard to come by. Ambiance was good enough for the location, but I wouldn't say totally family-style. This was an interesting take. I always saw the location as being isolated and almost with no actions. I kept passing by, observing the place that it is in fact open. As I walked up the stairs there's an outside patio and you have to further walk straight until two double doors. Once entered the place was very quiet for a Friday. In these times QR codes are becoming a trend to view menus and even put in an order along with your table number. It's a really odd setup and the ambience seems very detached from the rest of the area and city. I ordered the wonton soup and some type of noodles. Surprisingly everything was very good. I LOVE Chengdu! It is a good staple near campus, and there are always Chinese international students and families eating here, so you know it's good. I've gotten various dishes here on multiple occasions but the must get is the sliced pork with garlic chili oil!! The pork is super tender, and the chili oil is perfectly savory and spicy. They were quick to seat us upon arrival, and our orders were taken online with the QR code scanning that's found on each table. We ordered the Toothpick Lamb, Double Cooked Pork, and Stir Fried Pea Sprouts. The menu featured a lot of spicy dishes, but there's a good amount of options that are without spice, which was the case for the Double Cooked Pork and Stir Fried Pea Sprouts. Both dishes were seasoned and well-cooked, but I feel like I've had better for the price. I think the Toothpick Lamb was stand-out and my favorite of the three because of the heavy spice seasoning and flavor. The dishes are pretty authentic, but the portion sizes weren't too generous, so it definitely made for a little bit of a pricier meal. Service was great, with waiters constantly refilling tea. Without a doubt, Chengdu ranks in my top 3 Chinese restaurants in the Berkeley area. Overall, it's quite authentic and most of their dishes are consistently delicious. It's a solid place for Chinese take-out for a date night or just for a celebration. Some dishes can be on the spicier side (mala spicy), but I'm sure if you ask, they can adjust the spice level for you accordingly. I've ordered many dishes from here, but my favorites include --stir fried crispy chicken w/ bell pepper: my only complaint is that there's not as much meat as I would like there to be --griddle cooked shrimp w/ pepper --griddle cooked sliced fish w/ pepper --egg w/ shrimp --braised fried home style tofu --stir fried bitter melon: if you've never had this before, I don't recommend this dish. I've been here numerous times for dinner, and also picked up a few lunch bentos for $12.99. Overall, the food is quite authentic, although on the eve of Lunar New Year, we waited approximately an hour from sit-down until the food arrived (perhaps due to a large-party buyout of the patio). Nonetheless, here are some reviews for dishes I find myself always ordering. 毛血旺, or Blood Tofu Hotpot: This classic Sichuan dish includes ingredients from sliced beef, enoki mushrooms, beef tripe, bean sprouts, luncheon meat, as well as lotus root. The serving size is generous, and the soup broth contains an ample amount of spices. Toothpick Lamb: very well seasoned and served hot in bite-sized chunks. Perfect for anyone who wants to eat lamb without having to do much work. 口水鸡, or "Mouth-watering chicken." The classic sweet-spicy-and numbing Sichuan-style cold dish is always quickly served, which is a plus whenever dining with hungry and impatient guests. 鱼香茄子 Eggplant is something the UC Berkeley dining halls can't seem to get right these days, but Chengdu Style finds a way to make eggplant with a soft, melt-in-mouth texture. First time coming here with a coworker who suggested we try out the 50 skewer appetizer. Since it was spring break and we went around 11:15 am, there was only one other occupied table. We decided to order the hot and sour soup since it was a rainy day and the 50 skewer appetizer. The soup was a standard hot and sour soup but a pretty large portion that could definitely have fed more than my friend and I. The 50 skewer appetizer came next. The skewers has one item at the end of each skewer: chicken piece w/bone (Joey said it was a mini chicken wing), cauliflower, bamboo shoot, seaweed, tripe, quail egg and something rolled (maybe raw potato?). All of the skewers were tied together and immersed in a red oil with sesame seeds. The oil wasn't hot despite the red color. We finished the skewers but after awhile everything started tasting similar. I don't think either of us would come back for the skewers but I'm glad I tried it! read more

Good location, good prices, some great dishes, and some bad dishes. The portions here are generally good for the prices, and some of the Sichuan dishes on the menu are good. Some dishes here are the best Chinese food near campus I've had so far, but if you don't mind traveling a bit I think Wojia Hunan Cuisine is better. Also, you should keep track of the prices on the menu and double check your bill - I was charged $2 extra for the pea sprouts and didn't notice until I got home. Recommended: -Grilled Whole Fish with Mixed Vegetables ($36.95) - delicious! The fish was tilapia. Not overly spicy and not really numbing, but still really good. It came with wood ear, potatoes, and other mix-ins. I highly recommend taking the leftover peppers back with you after the meal to cook with at home. -Mapo tofu ($9.95 I believe) - good, spicy and numbing. It doesn't contain pork FYI. -Stir fried pea sprouts ($12.95 or $14.95) - nothing spectacular but these were good and fresh. -Boiled sliced fish in hot sauce ($14.95) - pretty good. OK: -Stir-fried pak choy ($9.95) - pretty good but nothing unusual. -Dongpo pork joint ($14.95) - it's ok. The meat is a bit dry. The sauce is very viscous - it formed a solid sheet when I lifted some up with a fork. -Stir fried rice with vegetables ($7.95) - average. A bit too oily. Not recommended: -Braised chicken with potato and green pepper ($18.95) - this is da pan ji (big plate chicken). The serving size is huge (it's enough for at least two people), and it comes with a large amount of noodles underneath. I found it way too salty. However my friend liked it and I often see other tables ordering this, so YMMV. Please don't get: -Tofu with crab egg ($11.95) - on the specials menu. This was awful and bland; I had to add soy sauce and still couldn't finish it. The sauce has a suspicious consistency (very goopy on top and watery on the bottom) and doesn't taste like crab roe. I was craving some of the classics, and this was one of the few restaurants that had the goods. Showed up on a weekday evening after circling for parking on campus to find the place with plenty of seats to choose from and a minimal staff presence. Sat down and began ordering. FOOD: Spicy wontons. Sauce is solid and the fillings are okay. Wrappers were nothing special. Only a little bit spicy, but honestly thought everything was a bit lacking. Chengdu style cold noodles with garlic sauce. Pretty similar situation with the spicy wontons. Sauce solid, but still a bit lacking for the amount of noodles given. Noodles were okay, still nothing to write about. Boiled sliced fish in hot sauce. Usually my favorite dish, but again, the flavors were lacking. At this point, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the fish, but still, the flavors of the sauce were lacking. Not particularly spicy at all, which is the whole point of this dish. Overall, the food quality was a tad disappointing. I always expect great things from restaurants that look like this, but this time, the service matched the quality. All mediocre. I wouldn't necessarily recommend this place, but if you have the craving, it might work for you. I might have to give it one more shot later though. read more

This is a great place for authentic Chinese food, especially Szechuan food. The prices are ok compared to the portion sizes, and the food tastes great. The only thing that I didn't quite like was the service, but unfriendly service is pretty standard at Chinese restaurants. My two favorite dishes that I've tried are the double cooked pork and the smoked tea duck. I love anything with pork belly which is why I love the double cooked pork. The pork is super tender and fatty, and it goes well with the semi crispy vegetables. Even though it has jalapeños, it's not spicy at all and it's a great dish to share family style. The smoked tea duck is also really good. Since I'm from Texas, I love smoked meats, and the smoked tea duck has a really strong smokey flavor. The smokiness adds a sweetness and complexity to the tender rich duck meat. The duck also has a really good ratio of fat to meat. If you want to eat at a family style restaurant with authentic Chinese food, I highly recommend coming here. It's not as expensive as some other nice Chinese restaurants, and most of the dishes here have good portion sizes and taste great. read more

From ordering to picking the food, it only took less 15 mins which is surprisingly fast. Ordered duck, fish fillets and veggies. None of them taste ok - they are all bad!
