Very good soup dumplings, very good shu mai. I also got a honey jasmine tea that was delicious. Not a bad quick meal for under $20 if you're looking for something tasty but not heavy.

I ordered their Shanghai Soup Dumplings over Snackpass the other day and, when I arrived, the man working there very kindly explained to me that they actually have a deal right now where you receive a free bun with your soup dumplings and he had already packed an egg custard bun with my soup dumplings. The place is very small and tucked away near Unit 1 around the side of Artichoke's. There's a table inside to sit and wait while they steam and package your dumplings. It's a very neat and clean place to pickup your food with a charming water fountain at the front behind a glass wall. You can place an order outside at a little Snackpass booth; I'm not sure if they accept cash. Despite only having one person working, they are relatively quick to package. The wait is never too long. When you receive your order, the person working there offers you soy sauce, napkins, and chopsticks. In terms of food, I have had the Shanghai Soup Dumplings, an Egg Custard Bun, Pork Gyoza, and the Pork and Shrimp Shumai. The soup dumplings are nice and hot. The burst of flavor of the soup is wonderful. I'm not a big fan of fried dumplings, so they aren't normally to my taste. I will note that the pork gyoza were excellently fried and crispy and came with a side of sauce. The pork and shrimp shumai had perfectly cooked shrimp that were a great texture. I really recommend asking for a packet of soy sauce if you get this. Finally, their egg custard bun is really a delight to eat. Soft and perfectly sweet, the first bite into the bun is always the best feeling in the world, and I love saving the bun for last. The filling isn't sickly sweet which can be a risk with custard fillings but instead manages to be light and nice. One note: To keep the gyoza from becoming soggy, their packages have holes cut in them for airing them out. Additionally, its possible for other to go boxed to leak a little. I highly recommend getting a bag to carry your food in if you can't carry it in your hand, and don't put anything you don't want getting messy in the bag with the food. It's a very minor and easy to avoid mess, just beware of putting important documents with your food haha Overall, wonderful food, considerate service, and chill atmosphere all available on Telegraph.

Pretty good for a first timer consciously trying dumpling. I've been told to get the ones with the broth inside, and I did. I was also craving some liquid soup so I ordered the wonton soup as well. I ordered just outside their location on a screen. Everything was direct and simple. Waited for about 10 to leas than 15 minutes. My number got called and you are asked if you want sriracha, soy sauce, and utensils. The food is nicely packaged but be careful not to topple the dumplings. they're very organised and uniform. The wonton soup had noddles in it. Never had wonton with noodles but it works perfectly for me. They're a bit bland but the hot sauce and soy sauce fixed it a long way. The dumpling just melt from the warm oozing broth and so delicious. I like to dip half of it in sriracha and feel the burst of flavours. Texture was nice and flavour was there. A bit pricey.

I'm Always happy to order to go my shrimp & pork Wonton soup, great flavor, Fresh ingredients, and one of my favorite things are their sesame balls are perfect, small size and plenty, the filling bean paste is the best I've had , and texture of the dough has the nice crisp. Service is prompt

Hole in the wall but an absolute gem when it comes to dumplings. Tasty and reasonably priced. Limited menu, nothing fancy. Just wholesome.

Will re-update this review after COVID. I really miss the rice plates from Dumpling Express (and now they only have a few options on the menu because of COVID). Recent Orders: - Shanghai Soup Dumplings 上海小笼包: can't say they are amazing but they do satisfy your craving for shanghai soup dumplings! Would def get again if I craved this next time. - Fried Chicken Dumplings: not potstickers, but actually fried dumplings. Enjoyed it! Lacked a tiny bit of flavor inside but some soy sauce or vinegar can quickly fix that (you can also ask them for what sauces they provide too) Would come back again. Hopefully they can provide the beloved rice plates soon.

Fried Dumplings, sesame ball & steamed pork bun

Ordered from door dash during peak commute time. It seemed like the food was prepared fairly quickly, but the driver was stuck in traffic getting from Berkeley to Oakland, about 30 min. Even though I had to reheat the food, it was all really good. I'll definitely order again, but will drive over there instead. Both the sesame buns and dumplings were perfectly fried, not oily at all. I can never finish an entire steamed pork bun, they were the perfect size with the right pork to bun ratio.

I don't say this lightly -- this was the best food I've ever had in my entire life…read more Shan Dong completely ruined me (in the best way possible). I have thought about their noodles and dumplings every single day since eating there. I'm not exaggerating when I say I've been actively trying to come up with reasons to get back to Oakland just so I can have another meal here. It honestly feels like a crime to have tasted something this good and then have to go back to living in Southern California without it. The noodles? Unreal. Perfectly chewy, fresh, comforting, mind-blowing ... all at the same time. And the pork dumplings ... I genuinely don't have the words. Juicy, flavorful, delicate but still hearty -- A DREAM! We were in town for less than 24 hours, which somehow makes it worse. I couldn't even take leftovers with me, and I'm still not over it. I've literally had dreams about this food since. Actual dreams!!! If you're anywhere within driving distance, go. If you're not, figure it out anyway. This isn't just a meal -- it's an experience that will stick with you long after you leave. Arrived at 1:30pm on a Sunday and the place was packed on that rainy day. I knew I was in for a treat when there is a busy spot close to closing time (3pm on Sunday), cozy vibes, and little ladies in the front making noodles. After about a 10 min wait (thank goodness for yelp waitlist), we were seated and greeted to warm barley tea at the table (nice touch). We definitely over ordered which is never the worst idea. It was definitely appreciated later that evening for dinner: Sesame Paste Noodles w/ beef - Ok, so lets get this out of the way, these were the clear winner. Hands down! Delicious and creamy noodles in the best sauce ever! Future me will be sitting in this restaurant, fat as heck, slurping up these noddles, with a big bottle os Tsingtao. Spicy Won Tons - These were the 2nd favorite, Yummy wontons dancing in chili oil. A classic. So good! Sizzling Shrimp w/ Rice - This was definitely the coolest dish out of the bunch. Shrimp and veg in a tasty sauce over a bed of rice crispies -esque rice. The best part was the snap, crackle, and pop of the rice when the shrimp was poured over. I loved how the veggies were sauteed but remained a little crunchy. I love when my veggies aren't completely cooked to death. Scallion Lamb - Like the name suggests, tons of thinly sliced lamb, cooked up with every scallion ever! This was really yummy when we first had it, but this was excellent after a few hours when the flavors married together. We had all of this and some beers! Such a perfect meal for a perfect rainy day.

The staff were friendly and super prompt about clearing empty plates and refilling our tea whenever we signaled it was done, which is always great as the dishes just get on coming! We ordered a bunch of dishes to share, and several really stood out. The spicy tendon was fantastic, shredded paper thin and swimming in a classic spicy sauce. The spicy lamb dumplings were another highlight, with an incredibly thin wrapper and a super flavorful and not gamey at all lamb filling. I also loved the stir fried rice cakes, which were sliced thin enough to avoid that overly chewy texture, and the stir fried noodles Shanghai style were classic and simple in the best way, with big chunks of cabbage and meat and just executed really (the chefs clearly have some serious wok skills!). Not everything we ordered was an absolute knockout as the vegetable dishes could use a bit more flavor and seasoning, but everything overall was good, and the portions across the board were very generous. The desserts were a last-minute decision and I am so glad we went for them. The lava custard buns were fluffy and amazing, with a molten salted egg custard inside, and the sesame balls had a satisfyingly crispy exterior that gave way to a perfectly chewy interior and sweet red bean filling. The value here is also excellent. We left absolutely stuffed and spent around $30 per person, which felt like a great deal for how much food we got and how much we enjoyed it. Highly recommend!

The owners, the Shen family, are retiring. When they opened in 2008, replacing two popular Chinese western food restaurants, they were a refreshing addition to the mainly Cantonese cuisine Chinatown community. There was only a small Shanghai literal hole in the wall spot across the street that closed many years ago. The mom did the cooking while the daughter ran the front of the house, literally producing home style Shanghainese cuisine. They have regular normal northern cuisine favorites like hot & sour soup and mapo tofu, small bites like XLB (soup dumplings), green onion pancakes, and Sheng jian bao (pan fried dumplings). I often had family style dinners here enjoying Shanghai staples like Lion's head meatballs, Shanghai stir fried shrimp (use that blank vinegar), braised pork shank, and stir-fried eel. Never had the pleasure in trying their Dong Po pork. Get their steamed rice with bacon and vegetable to accompany those saucy dishes. With their departure, I do not know of any authentic Shanghai restaurants in San Francisco... clue me in if you think of one.
