Pretty big resto in Claremont, more for big parties. Flavorful Chinese dishes w a good sized menu. The bar has $10 cocktails for happy hour!

This place has got its going on. An interesting fusion of Thai, Szechuan and Cantonese, but predominantly Cantonese. Here is how it scored: Chicken and Basil Shumai 5/5 really tasty and innovative Kitchen Sink Chow Mein: 5/5 kind of a cross between chow mein and lo mein so they are fried noodles with a thin sauce. Garlic Basil and Tofu fried rice 4/5: the flavors were unique but the fried tofu didn't do it for me. Chicken would have been better. Sesame Chicken: 5/5 really well executed They do a really good job tenderizing the meat and plumping up the shrimp and not overcooking anything. It's a little pricey but the quality and portion size justify the costs. Check it out!

Came hear after attending a memorial service. The service was good, the reviews looked promising. But the overall experience was lacking. The food was ok but I guess the rent is high in the area so they can get away with slacking on the meal. The Maggi shrimp had more tofu than shrimp and it was nothing special.

We came around noon on a Saturday and it was chill so service was great. Peter was our waiter and he was very friendly and made the Martin's Secret Mai Tai. We asked him to make it strong and it was strong.... After lunch, I knocked out for two hours LOL it usually takes four cocktails to even get me buzzed so that mai tai definitely has a secret HAHA We got the spicy fish and beef chili soup on the specials menu for $26. Three of us shared and finished it. Perfect amount! It was good and flavorful - only thing is I wish it was spicier! It had noodles, beef, fish, and wontons. The fish taste is not strong at all! If you don't like cilantro, make sure you ask to not have it because their cilantro is strong taste lol The crispy shrimp bao bao is also on the specials menu and is $20. It is two plates - one is the white bread and one is the cole slaw + fried shrimp. You put the cole slaw and shrimp into the bread and eat it like a lil wrap. It is good! Surprising twist. Very filling too. We finished it. There's a small parking lot but if you can't find parking, there should be street parking. I definitely recommend coming for lunch or dinner. Coming for drinks and food would be fun. Drinks are super strong haha and food is so good! Employees are nice. Will definitely come back!

Super tasty, great ownership--every time they deliver on taste and quality-- always. Years ago, a solid, and unique offering of delicious dishes was missing in the city of Oakland (in not trying to be 'fusion') in other than hit or miss Chinatown locations. My vegetarian colleague and teammate on Piedmont Avenue swears by their vegetarian sister restaurant, Laughing Buddha on the corner of MacArthur and Piedmont Avenue. Thank you for ALL your efforts in serving the Community!

We found this gem accidentally our first choice of restaurant was closed . The ambience was a bit dark given it was mid afternoon . Not a lot of foodie was in given it's Thursday. We were kinda skeptical but to our surprise the food did not disappoint flavor was amazing and service is great. Will definitely come back to try there other signature dishes

Had a really great experience at five spice kitchen we were dropped off by an Uber and in Piedmont and we had no idea where the restaurant was where we dropped off the restaurant was not shown and you have to walk around the corner and you'll be able to find the restaurant. As you enter the restaurant, you get the feeling of a Asian restaurant. It looks like it's a couple of different floors. The bar is where we sat and it is to the left of the doors when you walked in. The bartender Daniel was extremely nice knowledgeable and knew the drink that we would like to try is their original Mai Thai! his words exactly where it's not like the ones you get in Hawaii and let me tell you it definitely is not. This is not your sweet Ma Thai. It's definitely heavy on the pour and one goes a long way. Let me tell you. As we got there pretty early the place was not pretty packed but by the time we left to go to our show around 7 o'clock, the place was pretty full . The food comes out pretty fast and quickly and it's extremely hot and warm and taste like a home-cooked Asian meal. We ordered the fried calamari, the potstickers chicken, chow mein, and shrimp fried rice and we even wanted to order more, but I knew that we would be stuffed by just those dishes because none of us were going to be carrying leftovers to the next event. The chicken chow mein had huge pieces of chicken in it and the shrimp fried rice had beautiful big shrimp. The calamari was perfectly crisp and it came with different types of jalapeño pepper. It just needed a little bit of a sauce or something to kind of finish it off. The potstickers were delicious. If you're looking for a great place and Piedmont, especially if you're gonna go visit that chabot space center for an event, make sure to stop here and get your food and your drinks because a Chinese restaurant with a full bar is my place to go!

Amazing food, great service and nice, clean restaurant. What more can you ask for? This is not your run-of-the-mill Chinese restaurant. Their flavors are unique and bursting with spices and flavors. It is comfort food elevated. I've been here in the past when it was under a different name and it was good then, and even better now. We've only gone for dinner and there is always a lot of people dining there. The service is also on-par -- staff is always friendly. We usually get the on fire chicken (that's a popular item), chow mein and crab Rangoon. Other items I've had: green onion pancake, sweet and sour pork, dried fried chicken, sesame balls, dumplings, among many others. Most of their dishes are good. I forgot to mention their cocktails don't disappoint. Just know that the bartender is generous with the pour. This place is a must visit when you're in the neighborhood.

This time, we ordered a few dishes to try - the classic sesame paste noodles, Shan Dong chicken, the fried rice with shrimp, and the hot spicy eggplant. Since we did order delivery on a busy Saturday night, it took a little over an hour for our food to arrive. The food was expertly packed and we were given plenty of utensils and napkins. The sesame paste noodles are one of my favorite dishes here, there's a balance of sweet and salty offered in the creamy sesame paste sauce that's so addicting. I've always been a big fan of the hand-pulled noodles which are thick, bouncy and chewy. The Shan Dong chicken is deep fried and coated in a delicious sauce. It is more of the sweeter side if you're looking for something that's spicy. I appreciate that we were given large pieces as well! The fried rice with shrimp is amazing - I love the crunch of the green onion, the softness of the fried egg, and the texture of the rice and veggies which weren't soggy and still held a nice bite. Last but not least, the hot spicy eggplant was a great choice because it's usually the trickier dish to cook as eggplant can turn really soft and mushy. I was delighted that with the way it was prepared, the large eggplant pieces still held a tender texture that did not fall apart. I also enjoyed the sauce that was paired with the eggplant, which is oyster-sauce based and added a pleasant sweetness as well. I'm always looking forward to my next visit and I love supporting Shan Dong!

Although 3.8 is pretty low in my opinion, I believe this place should receive more of a 4.5 if I could do half ratings. Why? - Food has been consistently good and I know because I've been here several times ordering pretty much the same things (green beans, mapo tofu, lamb ribs and fried chicken); they MADE me like lamb which is huge because the only place I only loved it was in New Zealand, not a fan of the aftertaste - Service is friendly, food comes out relatively quickly; only suggestion is making more stops to refill waters/tea and ask if we are ready to pay the bill because we kind of need to flag them down for those things - Price is decent, def not $$, more like $ just because I split 5 large dishes among 3 people with LOTS leftover and it amounted to $33/person and in the era of 2026 with skyrocketing gas prices this is really good for tax and tip included - Easy parking in the area All in all, I hope this business is here to stay because I will be coming back again and again.

We threw in the eggplant order because we wanted some veggies and something that didn't overtly threaten to numb our palettes and were very happy with that as well. Chicken was fried well and not dry at all which was a lovely experience. Fish was also flavorful and enjoyable to eat, although perhaps the least memorable of the dishes. You know a dish is good when you tell yourself, "Oh, I'm just going to try a little bit of this."…read moreAnd then you can't stop eating it. This was my experience with pretty much every dish I ordered on a recent trip to Yu Yu Za Zang. I'll admit this is one of those places I've walked or driven past for years and have always meant to try but just never got around to it. But I finally had an opportunity to drag my cousin/regular dining buddy with me. We ordered Yang Jang Pi (also known as Double Skin in some places), regular jajang (spelled zazang here) myun, and tang sue yuk (beef - which is the traditional Korean meat for this dish). My cousin and I are huuuuuge fans of the Double Skin at Great China in Berkeley, so the Double Skin here had a pretty high bar to reach. We were pleasantly surprised to find it more than held its own. The portions of everything were very generous, and the mustard dressing was nice and spicy. Perhaps the veggies were not quite as crunchy as Great China's, so not as much of a variety of textures, but this Yang Jang Pi was still delicious, and I still think about it days after our visit. The jajang (zazang) myun was also very generously portioned and pretty tasty. I haven't had any in Oakland in a while, so hard to say how it compares, but I would definitely eat it again. The beef tang sue yuk was incredible. Again, large portion, perfectly crispy outside, tender beef inside, and one of the best sweet and sour sauces I've ever had with this dish. The vibe is simple and clean; nothing fancy, but I went for the food, so I was fine with that. The service was also friendly and fast. There were barely any people there on a Saturday evening, which made me sad, because the food really is good. I can't wait to try the rest of their menu. They also have soju and beer. Although Hanshin Pocha next door is popular, I could see Yu Yu Za Zang being a decent spot for delicious, very reasonably priced food that one can share with friends while having a couple of rounds of drinks. And in this economy, aren't we all looking for a good deal?
