I recently ordered the Tsunami Lobster at Thai Daughter, and unfortunately it was one of the worst lobster experiences I've ever had. The lobster was extremely dry and tough--completely overcooked to the point where the meat turned stringy and unpleasant. I've had lobster many times, and this texture was completely off. It honestly made me question whether something had gone wrong in the cooking process. What stood out the most was how strange the meat felt throughout. Even the claw meat, which is usually tender and juicy, had a spongy, almost artificial texture that didn't feel like real lobster at all. It was so off-putting that I couldn't bring myself to eat most of it because I wasn't even sure if it was safe. The only somewhat edible part was the tail, and even that was just okay--maybe a 6/10 at best. I understand that lobster is delicate and easy to overcook, but this felt like a major miss. If these are live lobsters as advertised, I'm genuinely confused how the texture ended up this way. Came here for some Thai food and ended up loving it so much I came back again the next day with my family (and my dog since the outdoor seating is pet-friendly)! We sat outside and the weather was absolutely beautiful--just a heads up though, the pavement is a bit slanted so the tables and chairs are slightly angled downward. Not a dealbreaker, but something to be aware of. Now for the food--the standout for me was the papaya salad with fermented crab. SO good and easily my favorite dish. The tom kha and pad Thai were also delicious, super flavorful, and really hit the spot. The Thai tea was refreshing and paired perfectly with everything. Only downside is that the portions are on the smaller side, especially for the price. But honestly, the flavors made up for it. Pretty high-quality Thai food, and what I would consider a " fancier" Thai dining experience. I ordered the basil, eggplant, chicken, and the portion was generous and very high-quality ingredients. I loved that they serve the sparkling water in a wine glass with a lime. I loved that they have plenty of choices for mocktails. I ordered a mojito mocktail it was so good. Definitely a spot worth trying! Went with some friends for a galantines day celebration and we left satisfied and with full tummies. The highlight of the meal was the Hat Yai Fried Chicken and tom yum soup( not pictured) for me! The service was quick and friendly and they were able to accommodate one of my friends with a peanut allergy nicely by letting us know which items that they can remove the nuts from. I've been really excited to try Daughter Thai Kitchen, and Christmas lunch felt like the perfect time to bring my family. The restaurant is beautifully decorated with purple wisteria at the entrance, and the courtyard feels romantic and serene. Inside, the ambiance continues--very elegant and upscale, immediately giving the impression of a fine-dining Thai restaurant. Most dishes average around $35, including typical options like fried rice, stir-fried noodles, papaya salad, sweet and sour soup, and eggplant dishes. We ordered one of their specials, the Tsunami Lobster ($80), which was disappointingly small--not even a pound--and looked much larger in the photos. Unfortunately, it was definitely not worth the price. Our total came out to north of $300 for 6 dishes and 2 desserts, with the lobster being the most expensive item. For that price point, the value just wasn't there for me. Overall, the food tasted average, similar to what you'd find at a typical Thai restaurant. The papaya salad was very basic and overly salty, and for the price I wish it included shrimp or fish. The fried rice was good, but beef is an extra charge and labeled as Wagyu--though it was really just thinly sliced beef. The soup was one of the better dishes: rich, coconut-forward, and filled with seafood. The pad kee mao noodles were just okay and lacked the wok-smoky flavor we were hoping for. The lobster dish was the biggest disappointment. The seafood was overcooked and dry, making it far from worth the cost. For dessert, the coconut vacation was overly sweet, but the mango sticky rice was done just right. Service was kind and efficient, and the atmosphere is lovely. As soon as you walk up, the first thing you notice is the aesthetics. The restaurant is so beautifully decorated, even on the outside. It even has a backdrop so you can take pictures before you come in! This restaurant is a Thai/lao fusion which I love! Tons of things to choose from on the menu. For my cocktail, I ordered the Thai Caliente drink. It was good. Not as strong as I would have liked but the flavor is there. I wasn't super hungry so I ordered the Yum Neua (Wagyu steak salad) with sticky rice on the side. It was really good and refreshing and it's served with cucumbers and cilantro and green onions. They toss it in a spicy lime dressing and serve it with mixed veggies. Super light and flavorful. Service was good. Only issue I had is that the music was really loud. It was hard for us to have conversations across the table since we had to keep talking really loudly over the music. It was my first time there but someone with our party said that was an issue the last time they came. Other than that, food was really good, service was great. Restaurant is cute and I'd come back to try other things on the menu. Parking was a bit of an issue. We came for dinner and I had to drive around a few times, so just keep that in mind when coming to dine. When I tell you everything was delicious, I mean it! We went for a Valentine's Day dinner, the ambiance is a cute and cozy modern girls cottage vibe. We started with Neua Num Tok Rolls and Samosas. Samosas were crispy and flaky, served with coconut curry dip (yum!). I had the Pad Kee Mow and my date had Oysters. Everything was delicious. Very cute place! Great ambiance and decoration! They were really nice. We made the reservation on Open Table and We ended up being late so we called to let them know and they changed our reservation. She said if we ended up having to cancel, they wouldn't charge us the cancellation fee which gives them extra points in my opinion. I got the pad see ewe. A longtime fan of the Farmhouse Thai restaurant family, I was excited to try Daughter Thai. My friends and I were a bit nervous about making a reservation for about ~10 people about a week in advance, but Daughter Thai was able to accommodate our group. The restaurant is located in the cute Montclair neighborhood, and there was plenty of street parking on a Saturday evening. We ordered a few apps to share - samosas, spring rolls, chicken wings, and papaya salad - and we each ordered our own entrees. The samosas were my favorite app, and they tasted identical to the samosas from Farmhouse Thai - warm, flaky, and accompanied by the delicious curry sauce. For my entree, I ordered a cup the Tom Kha, which was the first entree to arrive among the group. Unfortunately, the rest of my group's entrees arrived about 15-20 minutes after my soup arrived - so I waited awkwardly for the rest of the group to receive their food. Flavor-wise, the Tom Kha broth was the perfect balance of creamy and tangy with flavors of coconut and lime. There were too many onions for my liking (more onions than broth, it seemed), and I would have preferred more mushrooms and tofu. Next time, I would probably stick with my typical order of curry or noodles that I typically enjoy from the Farmhouse Thai sister restaurants. read more

As you know, I'm a sucker for some good authentic Thai food. Which takes me to the Montclair neighborhood of the Oakland Hills where I had the opportunity to try out "Daughter Thai Kitchen". Located directly off of Moraga Ave and parallel to Highway 13, this place has been serving up unique and traditional Thai cuisine in a much more intimate and upscale setting. Ever since opening their doors back dating back to 2016. I came here with my lady during the evening of Friday 7/4/2025 at around 7:45pm. We were able to park (at a dedicated parking lot) adjacent to the business. Interestingly enough, they actually incorporated paid meters which I found a bit odd. Nonetheless, I only paid $1.50 to park and proceeded towards the business. I will say that the use of colors when making your way to the entrance was a sneak preview of what was to come. You will notice beautiful thistle-colored flowers that freely flow by the main entrance. Once inside, we tell the hostess we'd like to be seated for two. Reservations aren't required but recommended. I will say that the interior layout of this place really showcased how amazing and elaborate this dining experience would be. The use of wooden beams imbedded into the ceiling fixtures combined with more floral arrangements and curtains to separate the tables provided an upscale and intimate look. Although this place doesn't offer outdoor seating (only during the pandemic), the overall appearance of this place is strikingly appealing. Their menu also offers a mix of traditional and trendy with all of the popular Thai choices. I ended up ordering the "Yum Neua" (priced at $25 as of mid-2025). This was a salad/vegetable platter complete with grilled and seasoned Wagyu flank steak, cucumbers, green onions, shallots, mint, cilantro, and a drizzle of spicy lime dressing. My lady went the more traditional Thai entree route by going with their ever-popular "Pad See You" (priced at $19.95 as of mid-2025). This dish consisted of thin rice noodles, cage free eggs, tofu coconut milk, tamarind, bean sprouts, chives, and chicken as her protein of choice. I settle with a cold, refreshing "Thai Iced Tea". I will say that the menu here is absolutely elaborate and loaded with so many options. You will find a huge amount of appetizers, soups, salads, curry dishes, noodles, and a ton of beer/wine/cocktails to choose from. My Thai iced tea arrived and was served with a scoop of shaved ice in a unique cup placed in a glass. My Wagyu salad arrived first and everything was presented well. The only minor complaint I have is that it was doused in a bit too much of the dressing as that overpowered everything else. I would have to give it a 4/5. I did try a few bites of her Pad See You and this hit the spot, definitely a 5/5. Overall, "Daughter Thai Kitchen" is an excellent choice for a date night or a family get-together. They offer more than enough space to accommodate large parties. The only drawback is that it was a bit on the pricier side. However, the service and portions were above average. With a beautifully-designed interior/exterior, large portions, good customer service, and decent quality food, I am giving Daughter Thai Kitchen a respectable four-star rating. read more

Loved the hot yai chicken. The chicken was fried to perfection. The Tom yum fried rice was great too, very subtle sourness and the seafood portion in it is decent too. Really really enjoyed my experience here! My dad had just sampled the food at a KQED event. I got off a flight, this was our first stop after, and I'm so glad about it! Walking up, the restaurant is in a quaint part of Oakland very calm, very demure but the decor of the restaurant draws you in. Walking in, the decor inside was equally as intriguing and the menu had so many options I knew we'd have to ask for recommendations. Everything was delicious! I wish I had some of the curry now, or the tom kha soup! Or even the samosa. Just so so good and flavorful. I would go back again and again if I didn't live across the country. Okay AMAZING Thai food... I went to a Michelin star Thai restaurant in NYC and honestly thought the food I had at daughter Thai was comparable if not better. We got the khao soi, pumpkin curry, papaya salad, pad see you, basil bomb. Khao soi ranks the best food from what we got, the flavor was amazing and the beef was so tender. We got it take out and it was still so good. Pumpkin curry was delicious but does have a kick, I thought it was her spicy. Papaya salad was solid, no notes. Pad see you flavors were so balanced and surprisingly yummy despite it being a typical Thai dish. Basil bomb was yummy but unfortunately was ranked last for us. Nothing too fancy. We took out but would be nice to eat at the restaurant next time. Parking can be hard as it's street parking. The "tender" beef rib that my friend ordered was stringy and chewy, not soft and melt in your mouth. Now I know why the place was not full of diners as before. Food is meh and is definitely not a good value. Way over priced for what you actually get.The hot and sour soup was inedibly sour. Tasted like vinegar water with a few sad little vegetables and some kind of tomato juice. The chicken wing was such a low quality tiny drumette that was bloody and bruised. They charge $6 extra for the brisket. The pad Thai tofu was good, but it was lacking -- there were about 4-5 pieces of tofu, which was very little for a dish. The somosa was good, but the curry that came with it was also very small. We both ordered the Thai Tea lemonade. It was different, and had both the tastes of lemonade and Thai Tea. At the prices for what we got, I'm not sure I would come back here. There are just too many amazing delicious mom and pop Thai restaurants in the bay to pay 2- 3 times as much here. I came with a party of 8 and with no drinks, it was 45$ a person. This place has the Best Southern Thai food in Oakland that we've tried so far! You'll find some resemblance to their sibling restaurant @farmhousethai but I enjoyed this place more. The ambiance is much more cozy and to me, the dishes had a lot more flavor.
