The Barbary is a beautiful bar. Everything from the lighting, signage, themes and drinks embody originality and uniqueness. Bartender Nick couldn't have been a better host. He gave great recommendations on the different drinks, and also was a fun person to chat with. If you have a sweet tooth like me, you'll love the Coconut Mojito which was creamy, rich, and a perfect 5/5 cocktail. You can also find pleasure in with the Black Tot Grog which was the perfect blend of pineapple, rum and charcoal, and also carried a black esthetic with a pirate flag for an added touch. With this being located near the Grand Lake area, this is a great spot to hang out at right after a film at the nearby theatre or if you just finished up a meal at one of the neighboring restaurants. Check this place out for a vibe. Every time I have came to the bar is it a vibe (My type of vibe). It's always clean, the staff are friendly, and the music is lit (but not too lit and loud that you cannot hear each other talking). The art work is very unique to me. It was different for my eyes lol The last few times I came to this bar they did not have hookah. I mention to one of the staff members, "I don't remember hookah being in the mix, this must be new" and they said Yes, it is new to the bar. I'm not sure how to describe this newish bar on Grand Avenue. How about "whimsically posh" or maybe more accurately "pirate-meets-tiki"? Owners and sisters Narges and Nala Gardizi worked at Trader Vic's in Emeryville for over a decade (review: https://yelp.to/VW8MRIWBIQ), so they know a thing or two about what makes a tiki bar work. With Kona Club right up the street (review: https://yelp.to/g4htOuL2Ue), they probably knew they had to come up with something unique and introduced more of a pirate ship vibe with surreal portraits of humanized animals on the wall. It's too stylish and meticulous to be mistaken for a dive bar, but whatever hybrid it's supposed to be, the sisters succeeded. Jamie W. and I hung around for just one round since customers appeared epoxied to the seats in the back lounge area and the bar itself was getting a bit populated. We chose winners though. Love this place! I have hosted two events here thus far and had a great time. All of their staff is always super attentive and friendly. Excellent ambiance. The decor is so cute and the entire bar is a photo op, for sure. Drinks were delicious and creative. Staff were super helpful in assisting with our drink selections. This review is specific to the hookah experience. The music and vibe are good. Arrived at 10:30ish pm and ordered hookah. Waited over 30 minutes until it arrived after 11 pm. Was told around 11:30 pm that we only had until 12:15 am and that she would collect our hookah. We paid $40 for one hour of hookah and were never told upon arrival and order that we would be capped by a time limit. This made for a deeply unpleasant and non-relaxing experience. We patiently wait for hookah and we're told 20 minutes into it that it would be taken away soon. Ridiculous. Tell people upon order that there is a random midnight stop or time limit. I'm still uncertain why they collected the hookahs mid experience and before the bar closed. I rarely leave negative reviews but this was so unprofessional I had to share for others to be warned. read more

I was there to check out a dj that I love and was my first time at this spot. I was really impressed with the time and effort all of the bartenders took to make their specialty cocktails. The Barbary is a beautiful space, but the second restroom near the fireplace needs serious maintenance. It has a strong mildew stench, so bad that you can smell it in the seating area near m the restroom. It would behoove the establishment to simply close the second restroom until it has been fully repaired, to prevent such a poor experience. A unique and modern twist on tiki. It's a younger crowd with DJs spinning on a Friday night, but the drinks were really well crafted and high quality tiki grogs. The Barbary is one of the best cocktail bars in Oakland, bar none. The prices range from $13-$16 per cocktail. My partner said this place has the best Old Fashioned they've ever had. I'm a fan of the Spice Trader and the Black Tot Grog. Don't let the prices deter you; the quality makes it worthwhile. The pirate/nautical theme has good ambiance. It's not overbearing, but definitely not something you can overlook. I'd call it cute and whimsical, and I appreciate that the art on the walls was bought from small artists on Etsy. It vaguely reminds me of the vibe on Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean ride. Like, a little homemade and dated but done with love and extreme attention to detail. On weekends they have live music, often jazz, and it's been good stuff every time I came here. The staff is all great. Owners are often on-site. Jorge, the door guy, is friendly and helpful and welcoming. I highly recommend this as a place for a date night. It's classy, cool, and serves up good drinks.
