Becky's Chinese restaurant has been a staple restaurant in the Rockridge area of Oakland for over 25 years. They have amazing lunch specials and family dinner specials at reasonable prices. I enjoyed a lovely lunch with my Mom and here's what we ordered: The Broccoli Beef lunch special, Kung Pao Chicken lunch special and chicken chow mein. Keep in mind that the Kung Pao Chicken was a little spicy so for those that can't take spice I might skip this dish. Everything was fresh and delicious. Each lunch special comes with soup and salad and each entrée comes with fresh steam rice. They offer lunch specials from 11:30 AM - 3:30 PM. Their white steamed rice is always cooked to perfection...not sure how they get it that way, but it is very good and fluffy. Becky herself sometimes takes our order and is so nice and accommodating. There were several takeout orders being processed throughout our meal. Another good sign of happy customers. The parking in this area can be challenging, but you can circle the block and you're sure to find a park nearby. The best part about going to Becky's is visiting the neighboring stores around the restaurant. There are consignment stores, bookstores, and a European market directly across the street called Rockridge Market Hall. I highly recommend bringing a group of girlfriends or your mom here and just enjoy the neighborhood, fun shopping and yummy Chinese food!

Extremely Disappointing Experience We arrived at the restaurant at 8:45 PM, well before the posted closing time of 9:30 PM. At first, the ambiance was nice, and we were looking forward to enjoying our meal. However, the experience quickly went downhill once we felt the employees rushing us to leave. We were still eating when a busser approached us and, speaking in Spanish, told us to "go home." This was both unprofessional and inappropriate, especially since he assumed our language based on our ethnicity. He also mentioned that they "don't get paid overtime," which is not something a guest should ever be told. This ruined the dining experience completely--we couldn't enjoy our food. On top of that, the food itself was bland and stale. This was by far the worst treatment my family and I have ever received at a restaurant. We expected basic courtesy and quality, but instead, we were disrespected and rushed out.

I'd say stick to lunch and dim sum specials for the price and taste you won't be disappointed. Dim sum which at Beckys are basically small plates are such a good value, they even have Mongolian Beef. My hunan prawns were $14 before tax both items $23 after tax. Service is good here no complaints. Street parking free and paid is available.

6. Szechuan Beef

Order 3 of their lunch specials from DoorDash. I ordered Mongolian Beef, House Chow Mein, and Szechuan Beef. Sadly the to go lunches don't have the soup. All three were reasonably priced $12-$13. The food was good for the prices. All three were packed with a lot of rice and if I ordered again I could just order the chow mein not as a lunch specials the foot itself was nothing special but it did taste good. My only complaint was that both the Mongolian Beef and the Szechuan Beef were listed as hot and spicy and there was no spice at all.

Every dish was so delicious!!! I will always go back to this restaurant. Thank you Becky's for all your good food! Thank you!!!!

Larger parties should though since there aren't too many bigger tables. It was a really cute place with a great ambiance. I loved that it was only a half mile from bart, so a lot of us took public transit. The waiters were very attentive and kind, and also very generous! We got salads on the house and desserts, as well as bread. Not sure if that is normal or if they just liked our group lol, but they were so sweet. I certainly wouldn't go in expecting it, but thought I should share that note because it really made an impact on us. I appreciate that they didn't rush us at all, and we stayed for a few hours. Also the food!!! Everything was so good! We all enjoyed our food and drinks, and there wasn't a single complaint. I got the salmon which was cooked perfectly with a delightfully crispy top and a buttery soft inside. The prices overall were a little bit of a splurge for me, but I would certainly come again. The restaurant space is well-lit, has plenty of indoor seating and seems suitable for a date or casual get-together with friends. My partner would give the food a five-start rating for its simplicity, generally flavorful, with spicy sauces and THE BEST guacamole! He had the Korean spare ribs and mash potatoes. He found the ribs to be fall-off-the bone tender, with potatoes that were more whipped than mashed alongside a carrot puree. I, on the other hand, had the New York Steak and au gratin potatoes. Though I wanted to enjoy my entree, I found the New York Steak to be unfortunately chewy and with too much fat. The au gratin potatoes could have had more crispy layers but tasted mediocre. Though I'd only rate this first experience with three stars. the service staff DID win us over and could potentially be the reason I'd be open to giving it another try.

No one greeted us. Wasn't sure where to go. Went to the register. Waited a minute for someone to come out. Ordered the clam chowder, dozen oysters and fish & chips with a glass of mystery orange wine. Decided to sit outside in the back patio. Table was dirty from previous guest which usually doesn't bother me be ut little things started adding up. Service took a while. Oysters came out first. 20 min. They were fresh and delicious. Just enough to get the palette opened up. $46 though? Way overpriced but was willing to overlook since it is Mother's Day. Next up - clam chowder, 10 min after they took the tray for the oysters. Smallest bowl I ever saw. Flavor was good. Temperature was luke warm. Broth was thin. $10. Not worth it. Last was the fish and chips. 10 min after picking up the chowder bowl. Portion looked good enough to make up for the small clam chowder, except it was under seasoned. Fish texture was a bit dry too. Fries were meh. Between the overall vibe...the overpriced items...the time between dishes...and the lack of flavor, I will continue my search for an oyster spot in this neighborhood.

If you're sensitive to sun, definitely come with a hat, as there is very little shade. Since I visited with a large group, I was able to try out a decent spread of items on the menu, including the a fried fish sandwich, fish and chips, oysters, a caesar salad, a chicory citrus salad, fries and clam chowder. Of the items we ordered, the fried fish sandwich was by far my favorite. I really enjoyed the soft bread they used. The balance of flavor between the slice of American cheese, tomato, shredded lettuce and tartar sauce was perfect. The fish itself was super crispy, not oily, and the outer crust held up to the sauce without problems. The oysters we ordered were on the sweet side. If I were to guess, I would wager they were Kumamoto oysters. Although the oysters themselves tasted great, the shucking could have been improved: one of the oysters I had had quite a large piece of shell in it, and with another one, the muscle of the oyster hadn't been cut from the shell. I believe the kitchen staff is quite small, so if you're coming on a busy day and you have a large group, I would definitely bring your patience, as food and beverages may take a while to get to you. Although a hazy IPA would've been the perfect complement to my meal, paying $12 felt a bit much for me, and my wallet told me to pass and enjoy a beer at home instead. Overall, I had a pretty solid experience at Ace Seafood -- minus sitting in the scorching sun in the uncovered back patio.

Its Saison alum founder has since moved to France, with an Atelier Crenn and Verjus alum now leading the kitchen. I don't drink wine, so it wasn't on my radar until SF Chron raved about their steak frites. Fine to snack on but in hindsight, we should've ordered the Acme sesame levain instead. * A La Isla Tuna Tostadas w/ brokaw avocado, pineapple, charred salsa (2 pc-$30) IHMO, very steep pricing for the size. The tuna was fresh and sat over a thin layer of mashed avocado but the tostada seemed like it had been sitting for a bit and had lost that peak crispness. The charred salsa surprisingly didn't have the flavor and punch as I expected. * Ham & Cheese Sandwich ($17) My fav part of our meal, simple but done incredibly well - King's Hawaiian sweet bread is spread with dijon mustard and kewpie mayo, layered with comté + gruyère. Sweet, salty, and savory with nutty molten cheese oozing from the crunchy bread. The pickled peppers add the perfect acidity to cut through all that richness. * Snail Bar Steak Frites ($38) - Default: Rare Beautifully rosy red, the two slices of steak is lean and tender with a nice beefy flavor. While a bit too aggressively salted for me, I enjoyed the lingering black pepper kick. The hand-cut frites were incredibly crunchy with a fluffy soft interior. They remind me of Trick Dog's addictive thrice-cooked fries. BUT, Snail Bar only gives you seven small fries. Shrinkflation is working OT here! * Snails w/ cashew miso, gooseberry ($24, taken off bill) Sadly, we never got to try it. After two follow-ups and an hour wait, the snails never arrived so I cancelled it. Bummer. S E R V I C E Friendly and warm staff but painfully slow service, the pacing of the courses seemed to have dragged on longer than we expected... def not ideal if you're hangry. A M B I A N C E Intimate and cozy hipster bar vibes with moody lighting, retro checkerboard floors, and open kitchen. On the night we visited, they had a good house-centric playlist giving it a buzzy energy. Overall, I can see why Snail Bar is popular with wine enthusiasts seeking a cool space to romance the bottle and nosh on chef-driven small plates. I probably would've enjoyed the experience more if the food arrived at a better pace and the prices weren't so break-yo-wallet steep for such a casual setting.

Food: Octopus was good 4/5 I'd definitely recommend grabbing it as your starter. It was very tender and I enjoyed the flavors. Wish there was more. Brussel Sprouts 1/5 I don't recommend. It was overly cooked to the point the texture inside was mushy and the outside was burnt to the point it was very bitter. The sauce/dressing for it was delicious but that wasn't enough to help so we sent it back. Halibut 4/5 Best entree I'd recommend. It was cooked perfectly and the sauce was delicious for it. Pork Chop 2.5/5 The sauce was good but the taste reminds me of a vinaigrette salad dressing. I did wish there was more flavor from the pork but it was fine. The meat was nice and tender. Unfortunately the pork bone was still rare on the inside, otherwise it would've gotten a higher score. Duck Breast 2/5 I'm not sure if the chef intentionally cooked the duck breast to be that rare but I fully expected a nice medium from the photos I've seen from the reviews. We weren't a fan and left it half eaten (mostly the medium pink parts). The duck wasn't tender and very chewy. Was more gamey. Skin wasn't crispy or rendered enough and was more of a rubbery, flabby and a thick texture. It was very unfortunate because the sauce was very delicious. Dessert 4/5 Although we didn't finish the pork or duck entree and asked for the check, I didn't expect it but I really appreciated the surprised complimentary dessert. The ice cream birthday cake was good but because I had lost my appetite, we didn't finish it and decided to leave after a couple bites. Service 5/5 Staff were very friendly and accommodating. I accidentally reserved for a table of 2 instead of 4 and fortunately the host was cool about it and we were lucky enough to have extra seating available. Water was consistently refilled without being asked. We were checked on regularly but not to the point we were constantly hovered over. Table was cleaned with our plates and utensils changed after each meal which was nice. Ambience It's cute and cozy. The outside dining is nice for a warm day. The bar area is nice. Drinks were good. I would come back just to hang out at the bar.
