My wife and I stopped by Line Coffee on a Saturday morning around 9:00 a.m. to get breakfast and we were the only customers. I ordered a house coffee and a spinach kale croissant while my wife got a strawberry banana smoothie. The house coffee is smooth and neither too sour, nor bitter. I really enjoyed the pastry as well. The pastry was heated up for us and had beautiful flaky layers. The owner here is super friendly. While we were chatting as they were making our smoothie, they told us how their smoothies use real fruit. When we tried it, I can confidently say that that's the truth, as you could definitely taste the fresh strawberries used in the smoothie. The smoothie had a nice consistency to it as well and had just the right amount of natural sweetness to it. I would definitely stop by again to try out more of their pastries and a Vietnamese coffee -- a drink that had caught my eye just as I was leaving. read more

Tried this place out on a random weekday morning. The place is small with no indoor seating and only enough space to order at the counter inside. Nonetheless, the space is cozy and gave a home-y neighborhood feel (I adored the Polaroid board with all the local dogs). Service was super sweet and greeted my partner and me as soon as we entered. They offered to warm up the pastries we selected (quiche and a blueberry cream cheese croissant) and just overall very considerate and sweet. The pastries were just okay (even warmed). I ordered the Alta Bates (latte?) iced with oat milk. It is flavored with lavender and rose. Unfortunately, it tasted overly artificial and sweet which made it difficult to enjoy. The excitement of trying a new coffee shop (to me) and finding a gem is amazing. They got specialty lattes that make this place stand out. I got a medium iced Green Eyed Lady which has pistachio and white chocolate. It's sweet, it has the nutty flavor of pistachios, and the coffee is well balanced. The medium does contain 3 shots of espresso which I thought was only 2, but, the drink is well made that it wasn't overly coffee tasting. That being said, I will be fully energized throughout the day. They also have seasonal specials which I will try when I return. With the Louisiana Hot Link Croissant, amazing first meal of the day. The Hot Link Croissant is hearty and topped with goat cheese and a pickle. The spiciness of the hot link, buttery and flakiness of the croissant, and the creaminess of the goat cheese is fantastic and complement each other very well. Service is super friendly and told me about each of the sausage croissants. Drink was made in under 2 minutes and the croissant was warmed up which took about 5 minutes. Inside is pretty small. There is no indoor seating, just one outdoor table. There's a little table available if you need to customize your drink some more, but I didn't see any napkins so you may need to ask for those. Parking is street parking, meter parking on the main streets, free 2 hours on the smaller side streets. Overall, I'm excited just thinking about going back so yeah, go try them out! read more

Tom is a trained chef who worked in catering for the film industry for years. He's serious about making high quality food and having people enjoy it. A dog lover and all around great guy who makes my day every time I visit, with or without my pooch. My wish for you? I hope you get to have one of his lattes, which are delicious. I recently had an incredible special coffee drink. Try the Alta Bates latte with lavender and rose. Just fantastic. The pastries are worth writing home about. Or a Yelp! The breakfast basket is awesomeness made with bacon, egg and pesto. This is such a great spot! Polo, the owner, is a fantastic baker and makes his own pastries, sandwiches, quiche, cookies, and muffins in house. The coffee is fantastic and it's such a cute spot. My partner and I had to stop in Berkeley to check on one of her listings before heading to Sonoma for the day. We were running late from leaving the city so I couldn't get my typical favorite ice vanilla latte. I found The Line Coffee right around the corner from the house we were checking on. I was so excited to see they used the same vanilla syrup as the coffee shop by my house in the city. I knew then that my ice vanilla latte was going to be amazing and it was. 10/10 no notes. I tried out The Lime Coffee again while my dad was at Alta Bates. Second Time around was great. I got to chit chat with a customer while my Mexican Hot Chocolate was being made. It was nice someone had a few second to chat with me. My drink was good! I will admit that I got my drink at The Line Coffee than at Whole Foods Market across the street. The owner was very friendly and willing to give recommendations based on customer preferences, a quality I admired. However, my experience the second time was not the same--the interaction seemed cold and transactional, and there was a lady (who seemed to be friends with the owner) silently judging customers. The flaky, cheesy goodness that I had been expecting turned into a half cold mushroom galette with tomato sauce. Their espresso is notable, though, as my cappuccino was on point. We came to The Line after I noticed that a Yelp friend had checked in on Yelp, pointing out that The Line is one of the Bay Area's top 100 coffee spots. Indeed, it seems to be #59. One imagines that this coffee shop is popular with folk who work around Alta Bates and with commuters who are heading north on Telegraph and pull over for a cappuccino. I chose The Line because I wanted to try to charge my car across the street at Whole Foods. Crossing Telegraph on foot was easy (which it wouldn't have been in SoCal!); snagging a macchiato was a great pleasure. My drink was made with excellent beans (from Moschetti in Vallejo). The barista (who is described as the owner in other Yelp reviews) pulled our shots with wisdom and love. There was no obvious place to sit out in front of The Line. We re-crossed Telegraph with our drinks and sat in front of Whole Foods. My drink was delicious; I'm very happy that we stopped by. read more

I've been wanting to stop by this location since it opened up. This location is walking distance from my work so I don't have to worry about finding a parking. After reading Yelp reviews, I decided to try the Mexican Hot Chocolate even though I thought I wanted coffee. It was really, really good & not terribly sweet. I also have a weak spot for croissants and I picked up a plain croissant. Nothing really plain about it - it was flaky, buttery and oh so very good! The staff was super nice, welcoming and I really liked the simplicity of the menu and of the spot. It didn't leave me "overwhelmed" with choices (in a good way!) Perfect way to start my morning. Chef Tom has made a pretty cool spot to stop by for a coffee and some continental-style food items. I feel like a lot of coffee shops have become pretty soul-less spots, but walking in here everything is clean, and there isn't a random high school student barista giving you an off-tasting espresso drink. The mocha uses Mexican hot chocolate (which has a spot of cinnamon), and is one of the best mochas I've had. Check it out!! read more

Last night I reaf the review that Ted R. wrote about The Line Coffee. I was intrigued by the Alta Bates latte, which is one of the few coffee drinks I'm likely to drink, having discovered the rose latte at Tarocco at 9th and Parker a year or so ago. I wrote Ted a note telling him I had bookmarked it and was thinking about it as a good place for a ladies' lunch. He wrote back cautioning me that there was only one table outside. Envisioning a rickety little table, I decided to stop by today after going to Batter Bakery to check it out. I drove straight up Ashby and turned right onto Telegraph, made a U turn and then couldn't find parking. I turned right onto Ashby again and pulled into the medical parking lot behind the building and appropriated a parking space despite the signs threatening towing. I hung up my hang tag and walked over to the coffee shop. In front I saw the table and it was quite sturdy, but I was glad I came today. I went in and Tom greeted me. I told him I wanted the Alta Bates latte and that Ted had recommended it. He gave me a choice of small, medium or large. Not wanting to commit to a large, I chose a medium. I don't drink coffee because the first cup I had, when I was on a high school field trip to the tide pools in Half Moon Bay, upset my stomach all day. Plus a doughnut, for which I have a lingering distaste. I love the smell of coffee and the taste, but haven't drunk it since, aside from a cup of Turkish coffee Nina made me decades ago, which didn't upset my stomach. But by then I was firmly a tea drinker. While Tom was putting together my latte I looked at his savory pastries to take home to put in the freezer. When Tom learned where I was parked he put in a special plug to keep the latte from splashing out as I walked, which was most thoughtful. I can't remember now which pastries I chose, but two were eggs and something and the third was w/ mushrooms. The egg ones will be my lunch tomorrow and the mushroom will go to the freezer. The space is small; I imagine it's where another local coffee shop was before the pandemic and before Starbucks came and went on Ashby, what the owner feared would happen, forcing his closure. I drank the latte as I drove home and it was incredible!! Worth a drive across town for another. A large. I won't do it often, but it will be my treat occasionally. The only thing I didn't like was the lingering aftertaste of the coffee, but that's nothing a few cherries and sips of tea couldn't fix. read more

Got the bon bon and it was amazing. Really enjoyed the hints of lavender to contrast the Mexican chocolate. Along with that I got the hot link goat cheese and it was simply incredible. Finally made it to Polly's shop. Have known her for many years from her previous businesses. Enjoyed her very rich coffee and the did I mention the variety of home made pastries? I had the coffee cake muffin which was moist and still warm to the touch. In addition, had the polish croissant with my coffee which she was kind enough to warm in the oven. My brother had the ham and cheese croissant sandwich and also delivered warm with melted cheese. Hats off to her assistant Pat who ran the specialty coffee orders like a seasoned pro! Love the personal service she provided not just for me but for every customer who walked in. Highly recommend this place for anyone looking for more than just a coffee shop. I was working in the neighborhood and desperately needed a mid-day pick-me-up. This place was a 5 minute walk, across from the Whole Foods on Telegraph. Chef Tom is the sweetest. Great coffee and a fun variety of coffee house style food offerings, savory and sweet. Chef shared his journey with me while I waited for my food to heat up. Fascinating and heartwarming. This place is now under new management and I was extremely happy with the various choices of savory and sweet croissants. I hadn't been there prior to the new ownership but I will tell you that I will be back again. The coffee is also exceptional. The new owner offered me a taste of the nitro brew. I didn't know what that was so he fully explained the process of how it's made and the difference between regular iced coffee and the nitro brew. It's to bad that there is no seating in this little shop because I would definitely like to enjoy my coffee while sitting instead of having to sit on the bench outside. read more

I ordered a chai tea at a coffee spot...I know, I know! In my defense, I'm not a coffee drinker, but a friend referred me to this spot as a must-visit and they were right. You can truly see and taste the passion here! The owner used to be a private chef for Hollywood films, so you can imagine the unique conversations you'll have. Drop in and learn something new. I happened across The Line by accident and what a beautiful surprise it was! I'm not a coffee drinker so I asked my partner if they wanted anything. They decided on an iced mocha and blueberry cheese croissant. AMAZING!! I drank half the coffee, not to mention the gem that Tom is.
