This shop is a quick walk from my new place in Berkeley, so I decided to check it out today and WOW! It's rare to find a coffee shop that has both amazing drinks and delicious food, but this one has both! A chai latte is my go-to order at most coffee shops, but the chai here was literally the best I've ever had. It was a perfect amount of sweet, and the flavors were fragrant but not too intense. I also tried the Louisiana hot link croissant, and it was incredible. The croissant was super flaky and buttery, and the hot link was cut down the middle and stuffed with what I think was cream cheese, sautéed onions and pickles. Just so delicious! I highly, highly recommend giving this place a try. I will certainly be back! read more

Croissant sausage link was SO GOOD!!! With the relish pickles and mustards and cheese. You have to continue making this Tom! It LITERALLY reminded me of home back in Chicago our hot dogs and links. Was driving into Berkeley and after playing ball last night, was absolutely in need of some coffee. I've seen the Line coffee shop signs for about a year now and finally decided to drop in. This is a coffee stop, you order and pick up and go. It's not a cafe where you can sit and hang out. But it is clean, orderly and the coffee is top notch. The menu is standard fare (drop, pour over, americano, espresso, etc) I ordered the columbian light roast pour over and in a few minutes I was sipping on a solid coffee that definitely helped to get my morning going. They also have an assortment of pastries which are baked fresh daily which I might be back to try one day. I'll be back. If you can get the simple things like a pour over well, then its a good sign the rest of it is going to be good. read more

Does Berkeley need another coffee shop? YES!!! When it's The Line. Not only is my cortado always great, so is the cold brew and mochas. Plus, the baked goods are amazing. My favorite is the cinnamon roll. I think Tom hooked me when I walked in and he'd just pulled a fresh batch out of the oven. There is nothing better. And, there's other food options if you want a bit more for lunch. The soup, breakfast burritos, and empanadas in particular are great. read more

I absolutely love it here! It is so good that my wife asked to be induced on a weekday so she could have a beef sausage croissant and a latte as her first breakfast as a mom!! Ordered a few drinks and quick bites from here (Alta Bates, White Peppermint, Chai, pesto egg cup, ham and cheese croissant). Everything is soooo tasty!! All my colleagues loved their items, we will definitely be walking back over in the future. They provided a super speedy online order time, and have a lovely, easily accessible joint. Highly recommend for those in the area needing an affordable and delicious pick-me-up. Had a teeny tiny mishap with one order--but it was resolved beyond than what I had expected (thank you again, Tom!). Amazing customer service; the two people in the front were friendly to every single person that walked in. Although it was my first time ordering, they really made me feel like I was a regular. Can't wait to try their empanadas next time! Side note: I work in the area so I'm able to walk over, but if you're driving I would pay attention to signs/parking in the area to avoid any ticketing. I know Berkeley PD to be pretty strict with the Telegraph parking, so I would recommend ordering ahead to avoid being in an unauthorized spot for too long. read more

so good! my boyfriend and i decided to give this place a try bc we live really close by. I got a chai with oat milk and a chocolate croissant and he got an iced matcha with oat milk and the apple/cheese croissant. I am honestly not a fan of croissants but this one was so amazing! it was so fresh and soft and the chocolate wasn't overbearing at all. my chai was also very tasty and my boyfriends matcha was one of the best we've had in the area. it was great quality matcha powder that had such a good freshness to it. lastly, the service was great and fast! read more

I stopped by at 6:15am on a Tuesday - so nice that it's open early! I ordered an iced nitro brew with almond milk and a mushroom empanada. The Nitro has a really delicious and intricate tart flavor that pairs well with the smooth milk and was among the best nitro's I've tasted. The Line Coffee is one of the best to-go places in Berkeley. They stand out from the other shops in the area because their quality is fantastic and the service / staff are spectacular. They not only have coffee they also sell super yummy baked goods ranging from savory to sweet items. The mushroom empanada ($6.50) was the first thing I tried. ( sorry no pics because I ate it so fast). It was so full of flavor and packed with thinly sliced mushroom filling. They don't skimp out on the filling which is great because every bite you take will fill your mouth with joy! The flaky crust pairs well with the savory mushroom. After that great experience, I came back for the mushroom sun dried tomato quiche ($6). I like their style of quiche because there's no crust, it's airy egg and toppings (only the good stuff)! All their baked goods are warmed up upon ordering and come in large sizes. The quality and flavors are wonderful and it's worth the price. I have family visiting and I wanted to choose hearty snacks from a place that is unique and different to share with them, so I chose The Line Coffee. Plenty of street parking available and there is the whole foods nearby if parking is a bit more limited. No issues with the service. Friendly staff and quick service. Then again we were there pretty early on in the morning so not like there was a line out the door. The baked goods were on point. Loved the almond croissant (might have been called something else but close enough), very strong almond flavor and wonderfully flaky. The mushroom quiche was also delicious and highly recommend. The coffee is where this place lacks a little bit. The latte had a bit of a floral/bitter aftertaste. The initial taste is fine but as it lingers there is something odd about it. If I'm in the area again may make the stop again. read more

Given the reviews and the overall third wave aesthetic of the place, I was expecting a 5-star latte + cookie. Unfortunately, the latte tasted slightly off. Kind of that bitter oat milk taste that you get when the milk or espresso has been burnt. The chocolate chip cookie had a nice flavor palette but was WAY too sweet. I took a couple bites but couldn't finish it. It's a new place, so hopefully they can tweak a few things to make it on-par with what we would expect from their offering. The owner is very friendly and nice. However, for me his espresso and drinks from espresso are not to my taste. He chooses to use Guatemala beans which for me are extremely bitter and completely unpleasant tasting. I can accept that he likes that flavor himself. He also runs this as a takeout service so it is impossible to ask for a ceramic or glass cup. I do not like the paste of paper in my coffee. Then he adds an additional $0.25 to each cup served for some sort of paper product tax. That makes his already high price even higher. Also I ordered a macha drink for my wife and she found that the macha powder he uses contains a significant amount of sugar in it. She does not drink sugar drinks ever. read more

Tommy is the kind of guy that's gotta be deserving of "the most interesting man in the world." I imagine this business to be what Starbucks was at its earliest iteration. Community, a forum for conversation and agreement/disagreement. Tommy only uses the highest quality ingredients and absolutely enjoys his craft. I visited the Line Coffee when I was at Alta Bates and we just had the most epic 15 minute conversation that traversed many topics. I don't live super close by but I enjoy reading his blogs and journals. Whenever I am in the area, I make it a point to stop by and go visit the Line Coffee. It's an experience that's well-worth it. This hole-in-the-wall coffee shop makes some of the best coffee I've had in a long time. It's clear the owner takes pride in his coffee, and I was pleasantly surprised to get one of the best Mochas that I've ever had. I would love to come back and have a good pour-over here too - they have an interesting selection of beans ready to go. Overall, this is a place that totally exceeded my expectations, run by someone who clearly has a passion for what he's doing. I wholeheartedly recommend checking out The Line. read more

I've been coming here for the past month. I'm very happy that they opened close to my job. I now have a place I can go to for coffee, tea & pastry needs. They open pretty early which is nice. I start work at 8 am and I can go get coffee before work. Before they were there, I had to wait to get something until break because the closest "cafe" to us here is Whole Foods but they don't open until 8am. Every time that I've been going to The Line cafe, the staff & owner have been very nice and friendly to me. I'm starting to become a regular and the staff is starting to remember my order now. Their espresso is very good & smooth. My partner likes their cold brew a lot. They close at 3 pm and I'm hoping eventually they will extend their hours as they get busier. I think the owner is waiting for more business to possibly open later, they are fairly new. The cafe is very tiny & there is no seating. They offer coffee, sweet & savory pastries, mineral waters, water, cookies, etc. There is a picture of the owner on the wall with his chef coat on. I believe all pastries are made by the chef (owner) himself. If you subscribe to his text messages, he notifies his customers of the new food he has in his cafe. Parking is street parking & there isn't much. You can probably park on Webster street and pay the parking meter (from 9am-6pm) or park for free before 9am. Of course I'll go back. Really cute place. I went two days in a row after running out of coffee at home and the proprietor seemed to appreciate seeing me again. The drip coffee was really good and seemed just the right strength. I also had a croissant (good) and a blueberry flax muffin (REALLY good).
