    Curry beef puff
    Austin W.

Ruby King has hands down the best curry beef puff I've had in my life. The outside crust is buttery and flakey, and the filling on the inside has an intense, aromatic curry flavor. Do not eat one of these in a car like I foolishly did because the pastry will flake absolutely everywhere and you'll be cleaning out crumbs for as long as you own your car. Because I stopped by at 7:45 a.m. on a Wednesday morning, there wasn't a line and I was able to get helped immediately at the counter. Although the curry beef pastries weren't out in the glass case quite yet, the woman behind the register pulled some from the cooling racks in the back kitchen, ensuring I had the absolute freshest pastries. For the insanely low price of $2.25 -- cash-only, the curry beef puff from here is going to be the next social media phenomenon once the fried fish sandwich craze over at Chinese Bakery and Deli in San Leandro has died down. From now on, I will always stop by here to get a curry beef puff if I'm in Chinatown.

I always go here for HK pastries instead of nearby Napoleon because there's less of a line, which I'm not sure why because this place is so good. They have a wide variety of items, including their must-try egg tarts. I love their hotdog buns because the bread is on the thicker, firmer side and has a nice chew. Their chicken pies and beef curry pies are really good if you're looking for more savory items. I am also a fan of their sponge cakes and wife cakes. All the other standard HK pastries (pineapple buns, cocktail buns, BBQ buns, etc.) are great too. There are usually a few ladies working at a time, and they do a good job acknowledging and helping customers in order of arrival. I believe they take card but I haven't tested that yet so bring cash to be safe. Ambiance is your standard old-school HK bakery vibes, with elderly folks hanging out at the tables.

I come here for the Cocktail Buns. The buns are always warm, nice chewiness, not overly sweet filling and baked to a nice coloring. I've also had a dessert roll with a fruit filling that are light, tasty and not overly sweet either. They have a number of other baked treats which I plan to come back and try along with my usual order of cocktail buns. I think Ruby King Bakery makes one of the better cocktail buns in Oakland Chinatown. If you happen to visit Oakland Chinatown, stop in for some excellent treats.

Best egg tarts in Oakland Chinatown! Perfectly flaky crust filled with a rich and creamy egg filling. Their bbq pork puff also make a great flaky savory treat too. Egg tart prices have definitely risen over the last several years, but their prices here are still a little more reasonable. Current prices are $1.75/egg tart, while bbq pork puffs are $1.65/each.

On a weekday afternoon, there were people coming in and out of Ruby King Bakery. I received this recommendation from a friend who praised their egg tarts, making me curious about that and their other treats. The servers were quite friendly, and there was as plenty of seating available across from the counters. I grabbed an egg tart and pork bun. The egg tart unfortunately had too strong of an egg taste that I did not enjoy, but the pork bun made up for my disappointment with the tart. The pork bun was crispy and flaky, and the meat inside was warm and delicious! The egg tarts here are not my favorite, but I would love to try their other treats in the near future! Maybe going to stick with the savory treats rather than their sweet ones.

This is my favorite traditional hk bakery in the bay. Nothing fancy, nothing creative, just your traditional baked goods you would get back in the days in Hong Kong. Our favorite thing here are their egg tarts. They are super flaky, so many layers and the custard is incredible. we love it so much we even bought a hundred of them for our wedding to have as desserts. Some of our other favorites are their pineapple buns, hot dog buns, cocktail buns, corn buns and red bean pineapple buns. Would highly recommend this place. It used to be cash only but I think now you can pay with card without additional fees if your order is more than $10. The only hard part about this place is parking is hard to find. What I typically come with my husband and we will double park and one of us will stay in the car in case we need to move it and the other goes inside and orders. You're in and out in 5 mins with your baked goods and don't have to worry about finding a parking spot.

My favorite egg tarts in Bay Area. Honestly I like them better than that OTHER really famous (almost always on vacation) egg tart place in SF. The ones here are not sweet, very custard-y, and always fresh. I love eating them right as they come out of the oven, piping hot! We arrived later in the day, around 2PM, so the selection in the glass case were limited. However, my pro tip is to just ask for the egg tarts or pineapple buns. They have them in the back and don't display them. These are the BEST items in the whole store, and why this place is so popular among Chinese people. However, the bakery items in the case are pretty good too, especially the bbq buns! Egg tarts are amazing. The pineapple cake is amazing as well. I find that at 90% of Chinese bakeries, the top of the pineapple cake always falls off so easily which is soooo annoying. But Ruby King has somehow figured out a way to bake them so that the tops stay on the cake. It is definitely one of my favorite pineapple buns in Bay Area as well. This is in Chinatown, so street parallel parking is a must. Bathrooms available but only for paying customers (locked with a key). There is some seating inside (2-3 tables) and coffee as well.

Came and got egg tart, ate it while it was still warm. Wow what a bite! The pastry was so flaky and crisp, and the custard part of it blends so well with the pastry. Probably should have gotten some other things to try too -- maybe next trip! They have a fancy machine that ties red string around the box, which is apparently from the 70s! Very cool to watch

We came for an event in Chinatown and got there early so we decided to have a cup of coffee and some baked chicken buns. This was my first time here and there's plenty of tables to sit down at and we ordered 3 cups of coffee and 3 baked chicken buns. Coffee was piping hot and just hit the spot. The chicken buns were also good and moist. Now I have a place in Chinatown to have some coffee for only $2.10. One thing that needs improvement is the bathroom as how C Town bathrooms go!

Came on a Saturday morning around 9am. We were lucky enough to find a spot on the street right out front as someone was pulling out. As you walk in, it seems like you're transported to a club of elderly Asian grandpas having the time of their life chatting at the tables inside, lol! The ladies at the counter are nice, and took our order. Cash only - and I would caution that you count your change properly before leaving; and also how much your total is. I noticed the first lady told me my total was $14.40 and then the second lady said $14.50. That was only a 10 cent difference so I didn't bother. But after I handed the cash and got my change back, I noticed they gave me $10 less than should have. Good thing I checked and noted this to them as well, and got the correct change. The egg tarts are pretty good and so are the pineapple buns. My husband and I prefer the pastries here over Napolean next door, so we will be coming back.

Ruby King Bakery is our favorite bakery for egg tarts in the Bay Area! Flakey crust with soft egg custard inside. It's not too sweet and the price is very affordable! Other buns are good as well! Service is good! Highly recommend this bakery!

Authentic Hong Kong style bakery. Curry pastry buns are on point. Pei- Tan pastry (lotus seed and century egg) are delicious.

Do they have any vegetarian buns? Do they have mushroom buns and Chinese greens bun?

Yes. They have a coconut Bun, raisin, and likely a few others.

Does Ruby King offer ready-made birthday cakes, or do you have to order ahead of time?

They have ready-made ones in the fridge but you can also call them day of to make one. They're pretty fast and accommodating.

How much in advance would I need to give for bulk orders? ie I want 3 dozen egg tarts, is calling to order a day ahead okay?

I've ordered 2 dozen without calling in advance...I believe they replenish as they get low and depends on the time of day. I usually get there before 10am Just to be safe I would call the day before to ensure you have the 3 dozen :)

Hi! Noticed that you offer delivery- what platform do you offer delivery through?

I think they are open back to regular hours

Is Ruby King open during the quarantine? What are their hours?

Ruby King Bakery is open 7am to 4pm, Monday to Sunday, until further notice.

There are glass cases full of breads, cakes, eclairs, tarts and other delicious looking baked goods. On the top of the cases are jars with a variety of cookies to choose from, as well as, one of my favorites, their lemon shortbread bar. The lemon shortbread bar is amazing. They stack the wedges in a large lidded glass jar, each wedge separated with a sheet of white parchment paper. I believe this is one of the hidden gems at La Farine. The shortbread crust Is tender and buttery and hold holds it shape well when you bite into it. The lemon curd is creamy with the right amount of tang, and there is a thin sweet layer of crunch on top of curd that puts this bar over the top. The balance of textures and flavors is perfect. I also highly recommend the chocolate eclairs. Each one is filled with a generous amount of piped whipped cream, a pate choux with good flavor and texture, and topped with a rich, silky layer of chocolate ganache. Overall their prices are reasonable -lemon shortbread bar $3, and chocolate eclair 3.50. I decided to give La Farine four stars because on a previous visit I had a slice of the Moka cake, and was not impressed. It is an attractive and delicious looking cake with lovely pale moka colored frosting surrounding layers of dark chocolate cake, however, the frosting lacked the coffee and chocolate flavor combo that I was looking forward to, and sadly the frosting was more waxy than creamy. That being said, I will definitely be back to search for the next delicious gems at this very lovely bakery on Piedmont Ave.

Out of all the pastries I ordered, the Okonomiyaki Danish was my favorite and will 100% reorder whenever I find myself in this area. The flavors, filling, uniqueness - everything about this was delicious. The other pastries were good but I was slightly disappointed with the Croisubi which is their version of a ham & cheese croissant but made with Spam. I be wrong but the Spam didn't taste like actual Spam but one of those Spam subsitutes. It wasn't bad by any means, but I was expecting the distinctive and salty taste of Spam. The pastries were all really good but I do not recommend the matcha latte for individuals who like their drinks slightly sweeter. They use a decent matcha powder but even after adding the extra cream top, my overall latte was 5% sweet. Not sure how when cream tops usually balance out the matcha taste with a bit of sweetness. But for some reason, the cream top here had barely any sweetness so keep that in mind if you order the matcha latte. I actually saw a guy who ordered a matcha latte before me come back inside the bakery to ask why it had no sweetness.
