Arizmendi is my absolute FAVORITE. I've been coming here for about 20 years and will continue to for as long as I am capable. Sometimes, the pizzas are a little overcooked which causes the crust to be extra crispy and a little burnt. But it doesn't change the deliciousness of it. It doesn't matter what they put on the pizza of the day, I know it's going to be tasty. Arizmendi's pizza 100% makes me forget about meat on pizza. I have tried a couple of their baked goods, which have always been good as well. They also have soups of the day, which I surprisingly haven't tried. If you're ordering more than 1 pizza, I'd recommend calling ahead of time so that you don't have to wait a while. There's typically 2 cashiers, always a small line, but you'd be in and out under 30 minutes max. No music, just the sounds of pure hustle trying to get everyone served. There is limited indoor and outdoor seating so keep that in mind. Parking may be tricky as well as there are a lot of surrounding businesses. read more

One challenge of coming here that came up today is that people are often stationed near the crosswalk or in front of the restaurant asking for signatures for various causes. Everyone has causes they care about, and many of us do our own advocacy in different ways, but not everyone wants to sign petitions while trying to cross the street or grab lunch. Today, one person became very insistent when I politely declined. He then accused me (and apparently others) of not wanting to engage because of his skin color, which was completely inappropriate and inaccurate. My decision had nothing to do with our skin .. I simply was not interested in signing anything or stopping to discuss a petition at that moment. It escalated to the point where two other women nearby also felt uncomfortable enough to respond. One said, "This is not the way to do it," and another said, "I don't even have money." It was unfortunate that his approach put people in that position. Just a heads up for anyone visiting: be prepared to be approached at the crosswalk, especially since the light can be long. On a positive note: the pizzeria itself was busy, but everyone inside was pleasant, I found a quiet corner to sit, the coffee was warm, and my $3 slice and $1.25 coffee hit the spot. read more

About once a month or so, I like to treat myself to either a pastry or a slice of pizza from this neighborhood bakery because it's always such an affordable, pleasant, and delicious experience! Pastries range in prices but there's many options under $5. And a slice of pizza is $3 and some change. Earlier this afternoon, I stopped in and decided on a slice of their pizza of the day - the perfect blend of kale, grilled onions, garlic, and cheese in a hefty slice. Even though the place was crowded, the staff member that checked me out was just as friendly and nice as usual. We picked up some food here to take to Fairyland. The area is busy on the weekends and we had to park up the street. Absolutely do not try to park in the Trader Joe's parking lot. You will get stuck there! The store is small and crowded. I docked them one star because of the layout. The line for the cash registers is right next to the display of pastries. It is kind of chaotic with everyone reaching over each other to get pastries in a small space. Fortunately the other patrons were very nice and let us back in line after we picked out our items. The pizza which is vegetarian is definitely their best offering. Toppings change every day and they only make one kind of pizza. You order at the cash register and wait about 5-10 minutes for them to finish baking it. We shared a bench table with another patron while we were waiting. They don't have a lot of seating, so it's probably best to take the items to go. The pizza we got had bell pepper, onions, Gouda cheese, mozzarella, fennel oil. The crust is thin and crunchy. All of the flavors worked very well together and we all ended up eating much more pizza than we wanted. Even the meat eaters ate a lot of the pizza! Pizzas are very reasonably priced at $25, however, they are thin and on the small side, so definitely order more than what you think you need. They also keep and reheat well. We also picked up two boxes of salad to round out our meal. I am very thankful that they have some healthier options. Salads were very fresh and the vinaigrettes were absolutely delicious. They had some interesting toppings, like watermelon, radish, and Kalamata olives. We got a couple of other things such as the chocolate chip cookie, peanut butter, cookie, blueberry coffee, cake, corn muffin. These items are rather large and a little bit more expensive, so you might think about sharing them. Baked goods, have a very "rustic" quality to them. Sort of like if you made it at home from scratch. They are the exact opposite of the super light and fluffy things you'd find at a Korean bakery. For example, the coffee cake seemed a little dense and had some chewiness to it. The cookies were hard on the outside and a little soft on the inside. This is not a bad thing. It is just different! Overall, I highly recommend this bakery if you are in the area. Just be prepared for the crowds and a little bit of chaos before you get your tasty treats! read more

Arizmendi is a staple in Oakland! I found this place years ago and when I lived here I was a weekly customer. My favs: Daily Pizza Pecan Chocolate Chip Cookie Zucchini Bread They provide a daily pizza menu and I can say every one tastes great! My fav is the pesto and zucchini combination. I also get a fresh side salad and iced tea. This is a CoOP.,, they are quick and efficient. They make the pizzas one after another so you always receive a fresh slice right out of the oven. The dough is so good, I'm unsure if it's a sourdough crust but it's definitely unique. The pizza is thin with high quality toppings. The bakery items are also fresh and meet various dietary needs. This location is smaller but they do have seating outside. Parking is challenging so you might have to park on the street behind. During my visit this week, we ate here twice!!! Super amazing experience!! The bakery is self-serve. When you walk in there are different sized boxes and bags available for you to pick to put your pastries into and you can take it to the counter to pay, where all the staff are incredibly kind! Everything is reasonably priced and delicious. I loved the special cheese roll with a cup of the daily soup! It's is busy environment but service is quick and there's a coziness and community feel here. We went this morning and got a wide variety of pastries. First off is the Chocolate Thing, which only is made on Sundays, likely because it's so complicated to make, but nonetheless very delicious. It's a soft bun with large chocolate chunks. Very unique as it's not sweet bread but regular. Then the Cheese Rolls are also delicious, very tangy and strong in cheese. If you get the special version, which I suggest, it comes with roasted vegetables too. Scones are always a treat. A Steller place to get baked goods. We went on a Saturday afternoon around 1pm and there was a line out the door. After standing in the line, you get to the front and have your pick of pastries. Then that's when it gets confusing. How do you pay? Do you get back in line and walk out the door to pay for your goodies or since you stood in the line already you just back into the line in front of everyone. We were lucky and the gal in the front of the line said we could go in front of her. We were quick, naming out all of our goodies so I didn't feel bad, but I'd really like to know the protocol of how to pay for your stuff if there is a line that you stood in once. The pastries were good. I got the cheese roll. I bet it would have been better if I heated it up, but it was still good cold. It was tasty and chewy. I also got the banana bread slice. It was delicious. I liked the thick slice. It was just enough. My husband got the short bread cookie. It was good. Very buttery. My tip for the bakery walk-in line: you wait till you get to the "post" by the registers, and if the area by the pastries has enough room for you to make your selection, you go ahead and grab your baked goods, then when you are done making your selections you go back to the post and wait for a cashier. I will always let folks ahead of me at this point if they were previously ahead of me in line but just took a bit longer to make their selection. I am not a vegetarian and this is one of my favorite pizza spots! I love pepperoni (especially on my pizza) and I drive all the way from Vallejo (about 40 minutes to an hours depending on traffic) for this pizza with no meat! They only do one type of vegetarian pizza a day (I can honestly say that I've never had a bad pizza from there) and this also lends to the relatively short wait time. This is pretty much a grab and go spot with limited eating space but it's not too hard to find a corner to eat a quick slice or two. They have great pastries and fresh juices as well. When you think you had every type of pizza and that they are all created equal well this is the outlier! Mondays are the worst day of the week for many reasons, but the fact that Arizmendi is closed on Mondays definitely makes it even sadder- that's how much of a staple Arizmendi is in our lives. Some of their pastries are a little hit and miss, but their sourdough chocolate croissants are probably the best I've ever had anywhere in the world. Their prices for pizza slices, whole/half pizzas, and day-old pizzas are pretty fair. I am always surprised that even if their pizza of the day doesn't sound particularly good or has ingredients I wouldn't typically like, I have yet to have a pizza from Arizmendi that didn't bring me joy. The actual logistics of the store in terms of picking out baked goods and ordering and waiting are a little chaotic, especially at peak hours, and sometimes I wish you could order like on Doordash for pick-up to avoid the wait for a last minute order (you can order full pizzas online), it's kind of part of the Arizmendi charm. The staff are always kind even when it's stressful, and you can tell that their values show up both in the quality of their food and the way they treat their staff. read more

I think these might be the most beautiful breads in the bay. I suppose a good idea to go here if you want something that looks particularly nice for a family dinner on the holidays. Very good prices. I suppose it has something to do with the special ownership - I'm not exactly sure how it works - but people who want a fresh loaf of bread at down to earth prices - this is where you go. I think out of laziness people now do all their shopping at one lousy grocery store. You get your bread, lunch meats and desserts as well as oil and wiper blades for you car - all in one spot. Back in the day I remember my grandmother making the extra effort to go to an authentic European butcher shop for meats and then another trip for the best cakes and breads... And I get it - not everybody has time for this - but once in a while - I think its important - especially for special occasions. Overall, there are better bakeries with more variety - I suppose the one thing I keep trying to find is that one item I like here better than anywhere else - and I have yet to find that. read more

I came here ecause they have gluten free offerings. I was able to pick up the pumpkin muffin and another gluten free bread thing. They were OK. I come to a place across the street and wouldn't make the trip here for a few reasons. First, they have two items and when I came in the afternoon and they hadn't run out. I can't say that about the store where they learned their craft. They run out of the one thing that have - a carrot muffin in a few hours. So why are they dedicated to not making enough of something that people want to eat. And why only one flavor. Second, the items were in a case with other wheaty things and so, cross contamination could happen. There are places where these items are in a completely separate case. That would have made me feel better. Beyond that, I didn't get glutened which is a good thing. Third, the line. Ordering was weird because I either got to the front, went to a cashier and then select what I want. Or I walk past the people patiently waiting, get my food, and then head to a line that may be out the door. I don't know. They need to figure out that line action and have something to explain it. I know that the store where the people who opened this location were trained, they have a line inside that zig zags which allows a lot more people in the store and they may have changed during COVID. But, people can be cranky and I didn't want someone upset because they thought I was cutting in line. This is another place, I probably won't come back to because why??? read more
