Jeff, the owner and pizza maker, is so nice, warmly welcoming us upon arrival and inquired if we'd prefer indoor or outdoor seating. Beautiful day so opted for outdoor on their expansive back patio. Miso mushroom - new to me, savory and bright flavor. Yuzu and lemon acidity cuts into the savory of the mushroom and miso. Might be one of my new favorites. Soppresata - an OG item on the menu and one of my favorites. Simple classic pizza with soppresata topped with scallions and honey. Savory, sweet. The honey is perfect on this pizza. Longanisa - Filipino inspired with longanisa, baked egg, and tomato. Savory and sweet. Heaviest of the three pizzas. Comes with a side of sweet vinegar to drizzle on top. All three of these pizzas easily are favorites for me. They're super large and best to share with 2-3 people. I have been wanting to try this place for a while, but it took the news of them closing to get me there. At least I got to go a couple times before they closed and was able to try all the unique flavors that I wanted to try. The first time I went was with my family. We got a whole Ube pizza. The taste was good, and love the uniqueness of it. Even the dough is purple! There weren't that many people there when we went, so the service was quick. My second visit was closing weekend with a group of friends. I got to try two more flavors recommended by the server during my first visit - blackberry and longanisa. Both were very good in different ways. I think I preferred the blackberry slightly over longanisa. They had a lot of take out orders that day, and we got the last white dough (there were still Ube). Good thing we got what we got. Even though they were super busy, the service was still quick and pizza came out fast. I heard they opened up again in San Francisco but for take out only. So glad they reopened because after having the amazing pizzas right before they closed on Oakland, my friends and I were sad that we didn't go sooner. Sad this place is closing! There's something prideful when you see your ethnicity poured into the love of food. Ube pizza, Longanisa pizza, Filipino pride right there. And it was always so bomb! The pizza here is always on point. We get that the foot traffic wasn't always the greatest and choosing to take a break, step back, and reflect on the next steps is important. The service was always great. Always so helpful. It's great that you can chat with the owner as he's spinning the dough for you while he's in the kitchen. The ambiance inside is cool since you can see everything in the kitchen. But the back is a vibe. The graffiti is off the charts and brings that Oakland love feeling. My first and last review of Spinning Dough. Spinning Dough was on my to do list for a while now. While browsing through social media, I was saddened to find out that they were closing their doors permanently the weekend of April 20th. With that being said, my cousin and I trekked out to Oakland to visit Spinning Dough on their last weekend of operation. The service was friendly, but very slow. It was understandable since an explosion of business was expected on the final weekend. We dined in and ordered 3 pizzas: - Ube - Longanisa - Blackberry We wanted to do halfs with the longanisa and blackberry, but halfs wasn't offered. It seemed that our orders got to us in a timely manner. One right after the other, once receiving our first pizza. I enjoyed all the pizzas. But my favorite one was the longanisa pizza. Composed of longanisa, eggs, garlic, tomatoes. Straight up tasted like the traditional Filipino breakfast. It was also served with a side of of vinegar. They are closing on April 20th, don't sleep on it! Came here last night with my man; had been wanting to try this place for 7 years specifically for their Ube (which can't be done half and half) - which we ordered. And then got a Half & Half of Longanisa and Blackberry. IRL, both not the biggest fans of Longanisa. He wanted to try the Longanisa which I was down to try one slice. He wasn't feeling Blackberry. We both thought the other wasn't going to eat the other half. The pizzas came out. The Ube was my favorite. It is going to be a little sweet for some such as my boyfriend even though he's Filipino. And then Longanisa I really enjoyed! If I had to recommend one it would be the Longanisa. The spicy vinegar drizzled on top was *chef's kiss*. It is going to be slightly sweet due to the nature of Longanisa. It was sweet, a little savory - just incredible. This was my man's favorite of the bunch. Then I tried the blackberry and he watched me to gauge if this was one he should be trying (I made no responses and just went ham for it). He tried it and didn't think it was weird as he thought it would be. He said this one was less weird than the Ube. The blackberry was good - a good balance and not too sweet. He liked the pizzas in totality, he prefers a New York style - not super saucy - not super tomatoey sauced out so these were a great selection. Wait I'm incredibly sad that I've only gotten to trying it on their last 2 days of being open. Hopefully a reopen in a better location in the future??? Drove across the bridge from SF just to try the ube pizza and GEEZUS it was so good. I took it to go so by the time I made it back home it was cold, BUT it was still so good a solid 4/5. Cold - the ube taste was not so much there but the pizza itself and the thin crust was amazing. We decided to try airfrying it to warm it up... BAM 5/5 so so so good. You can definitely taste the ube with the savory flavors of the pizza. Ube shouldn't be too sweet and thought this was a good combo I would've never expected. Pretty busy around 5pm, all the front tables were full not sure about the ones in the back expansion. The shop itself felt so warm and hot tho as far as environment temperature. It was about an hour to get my pizza :( so I suggest if you're going on the last day to order ahead. I came here on a Friday night with a friend for dinner, and we were super excited to try the Ube pizza! After seeing the hype years ago, we finally got the chance to try. The restaurant itself is on a corner, and it's rustic inside with lots of wood decor and neon lights. We were the only customers, so we were able to sit anywhere and service was great! We got our order in, and waited about fifteen to twenty minutes before the food came out. This pizza was MASSIVE. I really like how thin and crispy the trust was. There is a slight ube taste in the more purple region, but more or less, it was a decent pizza. I wished it had more toppings, because it was mostly cheese. We were eating slowly, and I asked if it was possible for our server to reheat the pizza, and it was! Definitely game changer. We also got a complimentary special of tuna inari from the chef! Street parking at Spinning Dough was easy. Several spots are available near the entrance. Margaret welcomed us in, seated us, and provided a menu. She described the special pizza which was a green chili pizza (pork). The space is simple with a big mirror reflecting into the open kitchen so everyone can get a glimpse of Chef Jeff spinning the dough. He makes it look so easy. We ordered beer and got some early beer week options to try. The miso mushroom pizza caught our eye but also wanted to try a popular choice too. For $4 more, we could do half and half so that's what we did. The only pizza you can't split is the ube. We chose half miso mushroom and half blackberry. I was curious to know, will blackberry replace pineapple on pizza now? *Salad ($13) We ate the house salad and it was no ordinary plain salad. There were sliced apples, crisp mixed greens, dried cherries, cucumber, carrots, and it was perfectly dressed in a vinaigrette. Also, it was huge! *Pizza The crust was light, crispy, held up to the toppings. Nothing floppy. The best part is that fold. The slices were big and so was my appetite. Miso mushroom ($37) I could smell the lemon zest on the pizza and I immediately wanted to try this slice first. The miso mushroom has two types of mozzarella, thinly sliced mushrooms, miso (not sure how it's used but you can taste it), basil, and sprinkles of that fragrant lemon zest. I'm not sure how my husband discovered this hidden gem since it's located in a part we normally wouldn't travel to nor a part of Oakland to walk around leisurely. But hey we love a random discovery! We ordered our $39 ube pizza online and drove over. Luckily we snatched a spot right out in front! We must have misread on when the pizza was ready so when we showed up the kind folks (pizza chef and 1 staff) were profusely apologetic about the wait. There was 1 other customer waiting inside the restaurant but otherwise no one was dining in. Not wanting to loiter in the area, we decided to check out the nearby Ghost Town Brewery to have a drink instead (highly recommend). Interestingly you can order 1/2 orders of pizza, though sadly you couldn't do that with the ube pizza- otherwise would have loved to sample other flavors. After finishing imbibing our delicious beers at Ghost Town we circled back to Spinning Dough. They recognized me immediately and handed me with a giant box of pizza, thanking me for the wait. The smell of our pizza was so tantalizing we almost pulled over to take a bite. And let me tell you that ube sausage ricotta red onion pizza is SO worth the wait. Every bite was addictingly savory. My husband easily gulped gown 3 or 4 slices! I ate 2 slices and had the remaining 2 as my next day lunch, and yes they were still just as magical. Spinning Dough has been pushed to me on social media platforms pretty much non-stop for the past couple of months. I'm glad I was finally able to try it out recently and see what all the hype was about. I stopped by as a group of four around 6:00 p.m. on a Sunday evening and the place was pretty much empty. It was a really nice day outside so we opted to sit in the back patio. Shortly after we were seated, waters were brought over, and we were told about the monthly special -- a Miso Mushroom pizza. One cool thing about the pizzas here is you can opt for half-and-half for a small fee. The only pizza you're unable to do that with is the ube pizza. My friends and I ultimately settled on doing a half-half with the miso mushroom and Hawaiian on the other half. If you enjoy thin crust, you will absolutely love the pizza here: the crust is thin, crunchy and really allows the toppings to shine. The miso mushroom flavor I cannot recommend enough for mushroom lovers. For a group of four, one pizza felt like not enough, and we were still a bit hungry afterwards. In hindsight, we probably should have ordered more than one pizza and a caesar salad as our only appetizer. It is unfortunate that Spinning Dough is located where it is, because it's kind of in the middle of nowhere and the neighborhood being run-down likely scares away out-of-town customers unfamiliar with Oakland. Very nice people! Came here for their Ube pizza since I'm a huge fan of Ube and when I saw this pizza on instagram I had to come get it! We were in the Oakland area so we came in an hour before closing and they made us a a pizza from scratch pretty quickly! The Ube pizza was delicious. There was Ube in the crust, and in the ricotta and potato slices in the pizza itself too, so good! The salty and savory combo really worked and I highly recommend. Next time we order this though I might as for less Ube ricotta since it felt a little heavy and sweet for me but definitely tasted like real Ube! I will forever support Spinning Dough, as they're Oakland spirit through and through, and hands down deliver the best and most creative/variety of pizzas in town. I first heard of Spinning Dough's viral ube pizza via social media, and was lucky to attend a Yelp Elite event hosted by them. My mind was blown when I took a bite of their ube pizza. The ube is literally IN the dough too, so not only are you getting deliciously tasty slices of potato, homemade sausage and scallions in your pizza, but that pop of sweetness from the ube just hits perfectly. Ingenius. First of it's kind for sure. Not too oily and the perfect chew to crunch ratio for the crust. I've also had their mushroom (my second fave), margherita, and chicken wings which are all fire. I think their monthly specials are where it's at...like right now it's the Berry Pizza. HOW CREATIVE. Their pizza's are great for leftovers and go well for a consecutive pop in the overn. Let's also give a moment for this beautiful family-run joint. Jeff is the 'za maestro, and I've seen his son also in the oven, and his niece and sometimes his wife in the shop. They're all amazing, loving people who do it because they LOVE it. Support local, and tip hard! From the outside looking in, you'd probably think twice about dining in. I mean it's not exactly in the safest part of town, and you're lucky if you can snag one of the three spots of street parking right in front of their shack-like exterior. If you come in the evening though, the small lot next door (I think it's a paint store or some type of hardware shop) is open since the shop closes in the evening. I've never had a problem with street parking TBH, just be smart about your car and don't leave anything inside. I'd go to bat for Spinning Dough any day. They have indoor and a larger outdoor area for dining, dog-friendly and kid-friendly. Pizza, wings, dessert, and service were all spot on, plus a nice big outdoor patio to dine at, what more could you ask for? I'm not a wing girl, but damn were those pepper Parmesan wings delicious. I had 3, and if I didn't have a big pizza coming my way, I would've had more. They were juicy, flavorful, and plump! For pizza we went with the September pizza of the month, the bulgogi. While normally I'd go for a slightly more traditional pizza, I'm super happy that we went with this one. Such a unique pie that was absolutely loaded up with flavor. From the spicy Gochujang sauce to the sweet bulgogi, and the sour kimchi, it was an absolute explosion of flavor (and spice) in your mouth. Pizza was also pretty massive. There were two of us that were pretty hungry and we ended up taking half of it back home with us. Even though we were stuffed from the pizza, we wanted to wash the spice down with something sweet so we ended up getting dessert. We ordered the chocolate cake, enjoyed a few bites of it, then were told the tiramisu was where it was at, so gave that a try too. I myself am a chocolate girl, so the cake was the winner for me, but the tiramisu was nice and boozy, so no going wrong there either. Just when you think you have tried ube everything, Jeff at Spinning Dough had come up with a masterpiece of a creation with the May only Ube Pizza for AAPI Heritage month. It was so popular, it returned for another month but not sure if it will be part of their permanent menu. With two days left, I had to come in to try this beautiful creation. Ube ricotta that when melted looks like edible flowers, sausage, thinly sliced potatoes, and green onions on top of a beautiful purple crust that when melded together looks like a gorgeous painting. Owner Jeff even stopped by the table to check in on us. With so many wonderful rotating creations, I will definitely come back. Recently, she discovered this place that has ube pizza - aside from it being picturesque, the idea also sounds interesting and could work for a tasty pizza. We went for lunch and ordered a half and half ube pizza and wings. Unfortunately, for us, the flavors and quality for both the wings and ube pizza fell short. We were pretty excited to try it but was left disappointed. The pizza was dry and too crispy. I personally don't think a béchamel sauce works for any pizza, it's not cheesy enough and lacks a nice cheese pull. The flavor of the pizza was also underwhelming, considering a béchamel was used for the base. This restaurant has a very spacious outdoor patio, perfect for bringing your dog with you. The location is not in the best part of town, be careful not to leave any valuables in your parked car. Prices were a bit high for the pizza, especially since the flavor was and quality was alright. My friends and I were in the area and looking for a place for dinner and my friend found this place with ube pizza! The location of this restaurant seems a bit sketchy from the outside but the inside of the restaurant was nice and they even have an outdoor patio seating. The ube pizza is not in their physical menu but I saw them making it as we were walking in and the employee said they still had it. Since none of us were super hungry, we only ordered the 18" ube pizza ($32). Every table ordered a ube pizza and I noticed that the maple chili baked wings were also super popular amongst customers. We waited about 25 minutes for the pizza since it was made to order, but we didn't mind the wait since we were just chilling there. The pizza had a nice presentation with the ube purple crust and the ube ricotta cheese. It is very fragrant and the slight sweetness from the ube is well balanced by all the other savory toppings! I always appreciate when that happens. Shows that they care about their customers. However I do wish that the waitress came and refilled our waters/checked up on us more frequently. I'm a sucker for anything ube, especially something unique like an ube PIZZA! Thank you Instagram feed for showing me this place! We showed up right when they opened up on a Sunday afternoon since their website mentioned sometimes it's limited availability. We were one of the only customers during our visit so it was perfect that we could beat the crowds. They have indoor seating but it's pretty cramped and dark, and it's right next to the kitchen so it's very hot. We sat outside on the back patio which was a lot more spacious. Even though it was a warm afternoon, it's shaded and it feels much better than being indoors. It had a cool vibe with all of the murals also. The pizza is HUGE! Which means the slices within the pizza are big too - reminded me of the big slices we got in New York. It came out rather quickly considering it's freshly made. We were the only customers there and it was about 15 minute wait. It's a good looking pizza but also the taste was there too, so it's not just for the looks. It's topped with housemade sausage which has a bit of heat and it balances out the subtle sweetness of the ube ricotta on there. Also can't go wrong with caramelized onions and fresh green onions. We were happy to have leftovers and enjoyed every last bit! I wish I got our server's name but she was very sweet! She was so friendly and personable, and very thoughtful too, getting us a high chair and making sure to put plates and cups far away from the kids. There was a younger girl working too and she was nice and very efficient too. She boxed up our leftovers for us and left it out in the front kitchen so we could just grab it on our way out. The chef also asked how we enjoyed everything and they all thanked us on our way out. Nice spot to be on a sunny afternoon but if you can do takeout, that's your best bet! Parking is not super easy but since it was early in the day we got a spot right in front. I can imagine how crowded it could get later at dinner time. My only complaint is I can't get this pizza more often. I love to support good food but also good people. I hope this business will thrive and even be able to move into a bigger space someday! read more

Wow. Totally loved the pizza, the server was so sweet and nice, and the owner/chef Jeff, wonderful. I think I kinda liked it. Spinning Dough, you've made a new friend. We came for the UBE pizza (I've seen pics), but oddly, it's not listed on the menu. Seriously, this is one damn good pizza, and so unique. Come on, purple Japanese yam as a topping as well as mixed in the dough. Well covered with delicious mozzarella, ricotta, sausage, potatoes, red onions, scallions, and Béchamel. It had a bit of a sweet flavor, and I absolutely loved it. [$34, 5.0 stars] The gf, her daughter (another Yelp Elite), and our pooch, ordered a second pizza, Pepperoni. While it was good (and the crust in particular was yum), it was so boring and did not stack up against the Ube. I would not order it again, and if a second was needed, I would try one of the other unique combos. [$30, 4.0 stars] I will also order the wings next time, omg, wonderful flavors are offered. Rosemary Lemon, Maple Chili Pepper, Pepper Parmesan -- yes! Also, to note, cute inside front dining area, but small. Outside in the back, a very cool 6-8 picnic table area, surrounded by colorful murals and artful graffiti. Bring a jacket, Oakland can be rather cool at night. The only downside is the area. My friend and I shared a half blackberry and half miso mushroom pizza. Both flavors were so good, especially the blackberry which tasted unique and delicious! The service was amazing too - the staff check in with you many times and are very nice. The place was a bit vacant on a Saturday afternoon, but it was also during the heat wave 95 °F weather. I'm hoping it's not vacant like that regularly because both food and service are amazing. I would frequent this place more if I weren't an hour away, but if I'm in Oakland area I would definitely come back! read more

What a unique selection of pizzas offered by the chef/owner at Spinning Dough! He even had chances for community members to submit ideas for pizza topping combos to be featured on the menu. Every pizza they offer is delicious - even if you don't like mushrooms the richness and flavor combination of the Miso Mushroom pizza will be something you'll enjoy. Their most unique pizzas are the Ube pizza and the Longanisa pizza. TheUbe gives the pizza a subtle sweetness but what really puts this one over the top is the ube ricotta cream on top. The mix of toppings on the Longanisa pizza is incredible as well, with sweet pork sausage, egg, and tomato, this one is actually a garlic lover's dream. And don't forget a touch of the vinegar on top to round it out perfectly. Their back patio is a quiet place to relax and enjoy craft beer with your pizzas where you won't notice the shuttered businesses surrounding the restaurant. It's unfortunate that nothing else has been able to take hold here and allow the neighborhood to become more lively. Spinning Dough will certainly be missed! read more

This place has been getting some buzz for their ube pizza and that's exactly what we came here for. Came here on a Friday night and 3/4 of their porch tables were full. We're lucky to have gotten a spot. We ordered, the ube pizza and Caesar salad. Both surprised us in different way. Salad was obviously good but a little tricky to eat since it was deconstructed. As for the pizza, there were so many different toppings I've never experienced together before. A little sweetness from the ube paste, and salty savory bites from the bechamel sauce and sausage. Definitely very very intriguing bites. My favorite part was the crust. I'm not a big thin crust fan, but the chef did it very nicely, where there was still some good chew to the bite! As apart of our meal he shared some appetizers, pizza that was thanksgiving themed, which we also found to be a delightful surprise! I'd recommend this place as a fun dining experience for foodies that want to try something new! It's more on the pricier side but worth it as a fun date night or dinner with friends! Wow, I never thought Ube would be good on pizza but it sure is!! I enjoyed it with friends after picking it up. So wish I ate there to experience the first bite when it just came out the oven. I came when they just opened. I ordered ahead over the phone and had to wait a bit since I only called in a few minutes ago. That gave me time to view their ambiance and take pictures. The employee was even kind enough to help me carry my pizza out to my car that was just out the door. Their parking is street parking so I would think it would be hard to find parking so I kinda suggest to catch a ride here. I heard they might run out of the Ube pizza since it is their most popular dish at the moment. So definitely call ahead to make sure. They do have other pizza items but this one was just so different it's a must try on my end to say. read more

Finally got to try SD after having my eyes on it for a while. It's a cute little pizza shop with friendly staff/owners. Not sure where else you can go to watch someone spin dough and make your pizza. They make some of the thinnest crust pizzas around which is different. It's perfect because your crust won't get soggy, but a little tough to reheat if you have leftovers. Recently, I've noticed some creative specials added to the menu like the ube pizza which was really great! My personal favorites have been the sausage and soppressata. I also recommend the wings. The salads are okay, but filling. Hoping they expand some of the salad offerings or offer seasonal salads. Street parking is available, though sometimes limited depending on the time of day. Check it out with family or friends for some unique thin-crust pizzas. It's a west Oakland neighborhood gem. read more

My family and I came here after doing some sight seeing in San Francisco. There's street parking near the restaurant. We got there an hour after they opened and was greeted and seated outside. The ambience was great! There was nice graffiti art, picnic tables with shade. We ordered 2 slices of pepperoni pizza, a whole ube pizza, a whole seafood pizza, and baked Parmesan chicken wings. The ube pizza was definitely something different! You can taste the ube spread, which made it sweet and then you can taste the savory of the sausage and cheese. I tried comparing it to something, but I couldn't. It's very tasty and interesting. I recommend it! The pizza was thin crusted which made it crispy and it was also chewy. This was the first savory ube pizza I had and I enjoyed it! 5/5 The seafood pizza was filled with flavor! It tasted like a shrimp scampi pasta but in a pizza form. The description said it would come with crab, scallops, clams, and shrimp, but our pizza had shrimp and scallops and it was very skimpy. I wish there was more of the seafood toppings. This pizza was also thin which made it crispy and chewy at the same time. 4/5 The baked Parmesan wings were not my jam. A few of our wings were bloody and lacked flavor. It definitely needed more seasoning and sauce on the inside. It almost looked like it was boiled. 1/5 Overall, the service was great! Light 4.5/5. Really really good pizza. Consistency, thickness, crust to pizza ratio, toasty edges, all come with this pizza. Longganisa was our fave - the only place I've ever heard of egg on a pizza meant to be eaten WITH VINEGAR?! Incredible. Already been here twice in the last month and it's gotten a lot of love from everyone. I will say the wings aren't much to brag about. Many people say it's good. I found mine too be underseasoned and a lil undercooked. Check out the patio outside when it's not cold.
