Terrific sandwiches (we ordered three) and great service. Very fresh ingredients. Will be back again.

Stopped by The Lunch Box and decided to try the pastrami sandwich. It was decent and hit the spot, but probably not the best pastrami sandwich I've had. I also thought it was a little pricey for what you get. They have a pretty good variety besides sandwiches, including soups, salads, and hot plates, so there are plenty of options if you're not in the mood for a sandwich. They also have a punch card where I believe after buying 12 sandwiches, your 13th is free, which is a nice perk if you come here often. Overall, not a bad lunch spot with a good amount of choices. Eh? My colleagues weren't fans and I think most of the feedback came from the lack of care and ingredients. I ordered the eggplant with cheese and marinara. The bread was mid, the eggplant was fine, but it lacked cheese and marinara. It was basically oil roasted eggplant on bread. A colleague shared the chicken caesar wrap was dry, lacked any dressing and no croutons, and so on. Overall, I feel like you could give it another try and roll the dice, but I'd expect pretty mid results. While not super expensive, I think there is room for opportunity. read more

Omg!!! They make beautiful looking sandwiches. But.... In what universe when you get a pastrami sandwich, they chop up the meat? And to make matters worse, I got extra meat. As long as you're just looking at the sandwich, great. Since the meat is chopped to smithereens the moment you take off the two layers of foil holding it together, the meat falls out everywhere. To make matters even worse, it was tasteless. The only good part of the entire sandwich was the rye bread. This was the last $27.42 they will ever get from me. What an absolute waste of money spent. Just put it down to never ever again. read more

It was my first time here; I went to grab a sandwich during the lunch rush. I didn't have to wait too long. I got the roasted eggplant on Dutch crunch with provolone cheese because it seemed like the most hearty vegetarian option. It's a solid sandwich; definitely get it with the marinara sauce. I wish it had a sprinkle of salt (I'll try it with a saltier cheese next time). I also tried a sample of their vegan garlicky white bean and spinach soup - hella good, very flavorful. The staff were very friendly and thoughtful! read more

They broke my heart a little today heating my roast beef sandwich when I wanted it cold. Since it's a HOT day I wanted a COLD sandwich with fresh, crispy vegis. Instead it was warm with wilted, soggy produce. Otherwise it was a good experience. Quick and easy with quality ingredients. Next time I'll make a special note on the order to NOT heat my sandwich. read more

Had jury duty downtown today. Looked for a walkable sandwich spot and The Lunch Box popped up. Got the Turkey Breast sandwich on sliced sourdough, toasted. And a bag of Voodoo chips. Service was very prompt. Great little spot to eat right outside in the shade. Foot traffic was nice people watching. read more

Omg I can not believe I have not reviewed this place yet. Ever since my orthodontic office moved just a cross the street. I find myself stopping in here to grab myself a sandwich for lunch before I head in to work. I have gotten so many different sandwiches combinations here I can't even remember all of them. My most resent favorite was the brisket sandwich. I was having a hard time one day deciding what I wanted. One of the regular guys that work the counter offered me a taste of the brisket meat as I was trying to make my decision. Well needless to say my decision was make and got that brisket sandwich one I think sliced sourdough bread. Even with all the topping and the sauce from the meat my sandwich didn't get overly soggy. The staff in there are always consistent and on point. Although I no longer have my braces on my teeth I do still find myself stopping in whenever I am in the area on other business. read more

They are very very nice. But what an insane rip off. I got the large spinach salad for $13.99. It has exactly 11 kidney beans, 4 cherry tomatoes and 3 half moon cucumber slices. I thought more might be buried, but what is in the picture is all there is!And it wasn't even densely packed with spinach. I cannot fathom how they think this is an acceptable salad for that price. read more

I LOVE THE LUNCH BOX SO MUCH. Had to say it loud for everyone to be aware. This place is incredible. No notes, just WOW. I love sandwiches, they are a comfort food and are just exquisite. Delicious, tasty, fun, filling. The Lunch Box provides everything and more that you want in a sandwich. This place reminds me of a bodega. You walk in and you just see a counter to order at, fridges with hella drinks, and racks with chips to choose from. Behind the counter is the flattop in which the cooks are cheffing up everything to order. This place is always busy during lunch time, but the wait is never too bad for your food. Your order gets taken quickly and you'll have your name called pretty fast. My go-to has always gotta be the hot pastrami. I love pastrami more than anything on a sandwich, and they do it just right here. The meat is thick cut and is so tender. You gotta try it. All sandwiches come with cheese, Cheese, Mayo, Mustard, Lettuce Tomatoes, Red Onions, and a choice of tapenade. I always go for havarti and the garlic olive tapenade. BOMBBBBB. You can also add a variety of other toppings and condiments. If I feel it, I add horseradish or hot sauce to my sandwich! The menu overall is pretty big. Everything is fresh and you can tell they put in a lot of effort when making their dishes. There is something for everyone here! If you haven't been yet, check this place out ASAP! read more

This place is exactly the spot you want to come to for lunch. The owner is super nice and you can tell it's got regulars with how he greets everyone in the door. The menu itself is quite vast but he does a good job walking folks through it and running a tight ship. Sandwich itself was quite tasty. I went for the brisket which was juicy and tender. Certainly will fill you up as well. I would love to come back to this place to try it again next time I'm in town. It's a small spot so wouldn't plan on eating there but definitely good for takeout. read more

Employees took care of me and I appreciate it. My dinner planes got cancelled and I wanted to try something new. I ordered off Uber eats and they did not have a Rueben sandwich on the app. So after making a custom sandwich order, I said "if a Rueben is available I'd rather have that" they actually read the note and then delivered. Thank you very much. The food for my taste is just ok, probably 3 ish stars. But I gave an extra for the service. I ordered spaghetti and meatballs from a sandwich shop. We all know that was a mistake. So I'll just say don't do that The Rueben had really good tasting meat. Could have used more sauce and a harder toast on the bread. The rye wasn't real strong. Passable Mac salad was not my speed. Potato salad also not my speed. I wouldn't avoid the place, but I also wouldn't seek it out. I'm grateful for the great service. Wonderful service here at the Lunch Box ! Thank you for the yummy sandwiches you make.

Solid food and quality. I enjoyed the tuna salad and Caesar. The team was easy to work with.

House sitting in the neighborhood. Walking the block to see what's up and decided to come in for lunch. Clean inside, not a ton going on, what you see is what you get. No jndoor seat Vast menu, so many options, order how you like it. but the brisket jumped out to me. The person who took my order seemed like she knew what was up. No nonsense, and I loved it. Sandwich was made pretty quickly. I walked back to the house, and it was still hot. The one sandwich and a bag of chips was more than enough food. I couldn't even finish the whole thing. Looking forward to coming back and trying additional sandwiches. read more

I loved the brisket! I love the flavor and with other sandwiches I go for the heat, but with this one I love the mild. I can always add jalepeno! Bread is fabulous. People who work here are great. I love that they can accommodate my no onion weirdness. Keep it up lunch box! read more

I agree with the previous review- I also love the lunchbox so much. I have been so demoralized by the state of Oakland food lately. A lot of our restaurants have really seemed to have lost pride and motivation in the past several years, but not the lunchbox baby! They are always consistent, always in a good mood and want to make sure your sandwich is more than a sandwich. I go out of my way to support this place and tell other folks about it. Thanks for doing our city proud guys. It really means a lot to me. Cheers read more

Wow! This place is so underrated -- we had lunch here and it was beyond fireeeeee! Both of us ordered the Pastrami Sandwich on their Soft French Rolls which came with Cheese, Mayo, Mustard, Lettuce, Tomatoes, Red Onions. OMG -- the sandwiches were out of this world. The bread was so fluffy and fresh, and the pastrami was perfected in a way that you just can't find around town anymore. Add some chips and a drink, and call it a day! I'm literally salivating just thinking about that lunch. I can't wait to visit DTO again because when I do -- this will be the stop I will be very intentional of visiting again. Support local y'all! The tuna melt here is pretty damn good. Every time I come the service is always quick and in order. I ordered a tuna melt on soft French bread, everything except onions. A side of chips always does the trick, so Lay's it was. Other times I've come I've had the bbq brisket, and honestly I don't remember the other. The bbq brisket was just okay to me. Maybe it was just that day. Anyway, quick, fast to-go spot. You walk in, look up at the menu and order. It gets pretty busy inside at times, but there is a bench outside. read more

Great spot for lunch! Their sandwiches are big, fresh, and have lots of condiment options. Also got the potato salad here and it's spot on. The Dutch crunch has really good texture. We got the bbq brisket on Dutch and a pastrami on Hard sourdough bread. I wasn't able to take a picture of the pastrami because my wife devoured ok the drive back, didn't even save me a bite! I ordered two chicken Caesar salad wraps from The Lunch Box. These wraps were devastatingly dry. It was almost as if they'd run out of Caesar dressing and so could only apply a thimble full to each wrap. Munching on dry lettuce and chicken wrapped in a tortilla is about as depressing as a midday meal gets. My husband called his wrap "waste of money bad." I don't disagree. read more

I have never written a review before, but I feel like I have to for this place. This was my first time coming and I was immediately greeted with a lot of hospitality. I have driven down Franklin St 100's of times, and have never seen this sandwich shop. But on Friday the 13th, I was lucky enough to go in and order lunch. And the category is....... Sandwiches! This is a simple in-and-out type sandwich spot downtown. They have tons of options and really nice employees. You can count on them to have super quick service. You can walk up and have a hot sandwich in only about five minutes. They have short-term street parking directly out front if you need it. The spots are limited, but spots have been mostly all open during COVID. I am the self-proclaimed queen of parking issues and I have never run into an issue here. They have a few benches outside but it's set up mainly to pickup and head to Lake Merritt. It's a great pre-picnic or mid-workday lunch destination. They are right next door to a yummy boba shop as well, so you can knock out the two main food groups in one trip! read more
