my friend picked this place and i was expecting another basic salad spot, but it ended up being way better than that. everything looked fresh the second it hit the table. lots of color, good portions, and food that actually felt like somebody cared when they made it. i got a bowl and was surprised how filling it was. usually healthy leaning places leave me hunting for snacks an hour later lol. flavors worked really well together and nothing tasted like it came out of a package. prices felt reasonable too. not cheap, but for the quality and portion size i thought the value was solid. the staff were friendly in a genuine way. quick when we needed something, but otherwise let us relax and enjoy our meal. service felt easy and natural. the ambience was probably my favorite part. bright, casual, artsy without trying too hard. people were hanging out, chatting, playing games, working on laptops. it had that comfortable neighborhood vibe where you can stay awhile and nobody seems bothered by it. def the kind of place i could see becoming part of a regular lunch rotation. good food, nice people, and a space that feels welcoming from the moment you walk in. really enjoyed it. read more

My wife and I stopped by Plenty on a Sunday Afternoon for their "Pleny+" semi-monthly, weekend-only, pop-up, presented by Chef Asuka Uchida. The $57 pre-fixe menu -- which changes every other week, is incredible in value. I don't think there's a better quality set menu in East Bay. Our meal started off with a trio of appetizers: a cured Atlantic mackerel, a lobster mushroom croquette, and a gulf shrimp chawanmushi. For the two of us, the perfectly fried croquette was our favorite item. The mushroom filling inside was such a wonderful punch of umami to start the meal. While I've had a bunch of chawanmushi in my life, this was the first time I've had a cold rendition of the dish. Between the appetizers and the main course, we had a vegetable potage soup. Like the appetizer course, there was also a mushroom incorporated in the dish, tying the meal together. The soup was incredibly complex, with multiple waves of flavor in each bite. For our entree, we had miso pork belly over a bed of rice with an onsen egg. I'm generally not the biggest fan of pork belly because of how fatty it often tastes, but I really enjoyed the preparation here. The pork belly is sliced thinner than you're typical piece of bacon, and the fat from the pork belly has been nicely rendered out so it doesn't coat your mouth with each bite. The onsen egg seemed like it would overwhelm the dish with its richness, but I found that it was a nice complement that went well with the rice underneath the pork belly. The spicy mustard bamboo shoots and the slivered onions helped balance out the richness as well. Last but not least, we had a Kyoho grape parfait for dessert. This was a refreshing way to round out the end of our meal. I loved the creativity of the pepper mascarpone anaglaise and also the texture provided by the almond cookie crumble. I cannot wait to stop by again to try out another one of Chef Asuka Uchida's pre-fixe menu. read more

Good spot for a healthy lunch in Uptown, but there were some things that were disappointing. I came by for lunch with a friend on a Friday afternoon around noon and it was empty when we arrived, though it got busier soon afterwards as the lunch rush hit. At one point I remember looking up and being surprised that most of the tables were occupied. I ordered the eel bowl for $15.75. It was ready around 10 minutes later and looked good, but my first thought was that it was a smaller portion than I expected, especially for the eel, given the price. I had to portion out the eel to make sure it was enough to last for all the rice I had. It's a good thing I wasn't super hungry, as I'm not sure this would've been enough food otherwise to last me until dinner. But the most disappointing part to me was the avocado slices that came with the bowl. The avocado was the hardest I've ever had; I couldn't even chew it. I took one bite and immediately spit it out and didn't touch the rest. As someone who loves the combination of unagi + avocado, it was very disappointing to me that they couldn't find a riper avocado for my bowl. read more

Plenty is one of my favorite lunch spots! The food is fresh, healthy, and so satisfying. The flavors are spot on. Their regular menu is great, with nice bowls, sandwiches, and large salads, and they have specials which I tend to order because they're so good. Some favorite dishes include the miso salmon bowl, the unagi bowl, the Japanese beef bowl, and the rockfish sandwich with cilantro slaw. I also love to get the Thai iced tea with almond milk- not too sweet! The service is great, all the folks who work here are very kind, and it's a simple but cozy ambiance on the inside. Had the maccha waffles and chicken. The chicken was cooked perfectly! I felt the waffles were a little bit over cooked so you lost the matcha flavor slightly but they were still quite delicious. This review is over a year past due and the fact that I can still remember my experience speaks volumes to how good it was. I had tried their Friday special, which was the wild caught ahi tuna poke bowl with avocado and WOW - it was amazing. Best poke bowl I've ever had. Major compliments to the chef. Each ingredient was super fresh, delicious- the wild caught ahi tuna, vibrant seaweed salad, crisp mixed greens/green onions, perfectly soft boiled egg, meticulously sliced and pickled cucumber, cherry tomatoes, kosher salt and pepper dusted avocado - with a perfectly balanced dressing sprinkled with toasted black and white sesame seeds. My picture really said it all. I've frequented back a few times afterwards and tried the salads- they were good but my favorite will always be the poke bowl. I do want to try the other daily specials and menu items in the future. I came recently to get a cookie but my usual choc chip was all gone. The pb one I got was just ok. To say Plenty has changed during Covid is an understatement. With the office lunch crowd non-existant, what was once one of the busier lunch options in Uptown is now another lunch spot doing its best to evolve with the times. Originally a duo, now Plenty is owned and operated solely by the chef. A rotating menu based on daily ingredients has shifted to an updated but static menu, featuring soups, salads, sandwiches, bowls, and breakfast options that blend Eastern and Western ingredients. Initially I focused on Plenty as my more healthy lunch option. While he still has that selection, there are some less healthy but very flavorful items as well. On the healthy side ge still has the Schezwan rice noodle bowl, with shrimp, greens, sprouts, and noodles. Without the noodles, I highly recommend the Sesame Salad. I add shrimp, but even without you get a HUGE container of fresh flavor, with the fried shallots giving it a nice crunch. While I thought I had my cheese steak spot in Uptown, there is a new Japanese Cheese Steak Sando. Tasty and tender beef tenderloin, marinated in sake and soy, with onions, bell peppers, fontina, and spice. Its really good. Now I will still go to Prospect Park for my traditional cheese steak fix, but if looking for a fusion version, highly recommend this. Rounding out the new sandwiches are the BBQ brisket sando and the spicy Schezwan fries chicken sando. I had tried a variant - the BBQ fried chicken sando in 2020 and it was good, but I do love brisket and there aren't a lot of spots offering it. And while I constantly point out the overabundance of fried chicken options downtown, I did get to sample the Schezwan fried chicken, and it does offer something different in the area. Not Hot Boys spicy, but a nice tingle. With us in the cold and rainy season, his two soup options are there to warm you from the inside. I picked up the gumbo, and I do highly recommend you stir it around. In typical fashion, the good stuff sinks to the bottom, so make sure it is proper mixed. Now I will say I like Angeline's gumbo much more, for a crab gumbo he does not skimp on the crab meat. Pick up the grilled cheese to dip in the gumbo for extra comfort. I want Plenty to survive Covid. Its a local spot offering something different, maybe not as 'Gram worthy as Hot Boys or Belly, but still very flavorful and unique. So if looking for something new, something healthy, and something tasty, I highly recommend Plenty. read more

So yeah yeah it's my fault I wanted to eat healthy but if I'm going to eat out, I expect the food to be a bit more flavorful and enjoyable so it actually feels worth the money. I got the brown rice bowl. I did not add on chicken for an extra $3 cause then my meal would be ~$15! Perhaps I should have asked for more sauce or added the meat? It feels great to not feel like a fatty after my meal but I also left feeling pretty unsatisfied. I definitely am craving some Taco Bell now lol. Apparently it got voted one of the healthiest fast food chains so maybe I should've went there haha! Props to Plenty for offering actual healthy food though! This space has been several different restaurants and cafe shops during the years that I have lived in and worked in this neighborhood. Today, I tried the latest for the first time. The layout is small, but friendly and casual with plenty of natural light. I was excited to see a pile of board games for customer use. We played dominoes while waiting for our order. I had never heard of a Japanese cheesesteak before today and I must say that it was amazing. The side salad was delicious and I tried my friend's salad that had a delicious pesto sauce that tasted homemade. I highly recommend trying this place out if you enjoy great food. read more

I came in and ordered food then casually asked the cashier if i could exchange a drink for another one in case i ended up not liking it. she had to ask her manager/supervisor if it was okay and he immediately went off on me out of nowhere with the most aggressive and condescending attitude saying "no, no you can't just try every drink and switch it out cause you don't like it" and that restaurants "don't do that", which many do. if that's not their policy i completely respect that. a simple "no" would've been fine. i didn't do anything to warrant that type of response. and i've actually eaten here before and the food wasn't too bad! guess he was having a bad day. read more

It was also plenty expensive for fast casual, but for the amount of time and effort that goes into cooking healthy delicious meals, I'm ok with a $5-7 premium. I got the brown rice bowl ($12) and added avocado ($2) and roasted chicken ($4). It was SO INCREDIBLY DELICIOUS. The bowl had squash, kimchi, a poached egg, cabbage, kale, sesame seeds, broccoli, carrots, green onions, and bean sprouts. I actually ended up saving half of it for tomorrow. Delicious, healthy, pricy but you're getting what you pay for. Five stars!
