I went in person and ordered a Stromboli, and was given a Calzone. When I called to ask them about it, they attempted to say that a calzone and Stromboli are the exact same thing, although I see pictures on Yelp of people having Stromboli which is clearly very different than a calzone. read more

This used to be my FAVORITE pizza place (for the price) hands down. Their Tikki Masala pizza was literally insane. I was always speechless when I got it- but that must have been from previous owners because I ordered one a couple of months ago and it was a JOKE. A LITERAL ABOMBINATION. Cheese, and few measly pieces of chicken. I was so mad. DO NOT ORDER FROM HERE THIS PLACE SUCKS. I ordered a Hawaiian pizza with no ham, just chicken and pineapple. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed. The chicken tasted like tikka masala, and while I enjoy tikka masala, I didn't expect it on my pizza. Located in downtown Oakland on the intersection of 13th & Harrison Street and I pass by this place all the time so I figured I'd check it out. All I got was a slice which came out to $6 plus tax and tip which is a bit much in my opinion but bonus points for the convenience factor. The service was quick but there wasn't really anything special about the ambiance or the inside of the restaurant. The pizza itself was foldable, had a thin crust, and was hot. I used to love this place, but sadly I have had too many significant customer service issues that make me never want to come back. There are routinely issues with the restaurant saying they are open (online hours, DoorDash availability) when they are closed, resulting in wasted time going out for pick-up and issues getting refunds. And then my experience tonight really sealed it for me - I called to make sure they were open and to confirm they were receiving DoorDash orders. The person who answered the phone said they were open and it was okay to place the order with DoorDash. After ordering I called again to make sure the order was received and the person who answered started screaming at me that the DoorDash promotion for their restaurant was too high. It was incredibly inappropriate seeing as how I have nothing to do with the promotion listed on DoorDash, and they had just given me the green light to place the order moments before. I was stunned at the way this person spoke to me. They also didn't cancel the order, so I had to work with DoorDash customer service to ensure I was refunded in full. Really a shame! read more

This was honestly my 2nd option due to another restaurant not being open near by. Decided to settle for pizza early evening Friday. Don't be fooled by the appearance once walking in. The staff were very friendly. Ordered a Margherita pizza and it was delicious! They showing a random documentary on different types of animals that was interesting but enjoyable while also learning a thing or two on different species. I've walked by this place many times and have been amused by their mural that shows Steph Curry holding a pizza box. I finally got to try it yesterday and I ordered a margherita pizza, regular 14 inch size, for pickup online. The pizza was ready when we got there and it was a quick, smooth process to pick up the box. The pizza itself was pretty good overall, it wasn't particularly a stand-out compared to other margherita pizzas I've had, but the main part of the pizza was decently yummy and salty, without too much red sauce. The crust/bread part was rather plain, however. They only gave us one packet of parmesan, so we supplemented with leftover cheese packets we had at home, which definitely improved the flavor. It's Friday night in Oakland, and I went to try the Meat Lovers Stromboli at Basil Pizzeria! A stromboli is like a rolled pizza. It's fillings are your favorite pizza toppings stuffed into a giant tasty turnover. You slice it into segments, and dip them in the marinara sauce. A stromboli is not a calzone. A calzone is a folded pizza, and it's edges are crimped. The Meat Lovers Stromboli is delicious! I added extra cheese and mushrooms, and it still costs less than $20. This stromboli is loaded with Tomato Sauce, Mozzarella, Ham, Salami, Pepperoni, Sausage. Because it's a rolled pizza, it's easy to handle and not messy. The place was busy at 9pm on a Friday night. LAST WEEK, I came across Basil Pizzeria by accident and immediately hit the brakes and dove into a parking space. The owner and young woman I saw were warm and friendly yet not overbearing. The environment is comfortable, colorful, cozy, easy going, and friendly. It smells like tempting food inside. It's got a really nice corner view so it feels cheerful with the right amount of sun. I noticed the reasonable prices which I appreciate! We got the Spinach and Ricotta Calzone this visit and last week we got a Cheese Calzone and a slice of Pizza. Each time everything was out-of-this world delicious. The sauce makes so much difference! He makes his own sauces fresh!! The sauce is obviously cooked to smooth perfection before he adds it to his dishes. His sauces added a smoothness and digestibility to the pizza and calzone. Everything I ordered was good! The Chicken Tikka Masala pizza was better than I expected; great flavor with a mild spiciness. The Funghi pizza was as good as I expected. Love me a pizza with Alfredo sauce. Fried raviolis were good, perfect little appetizer. Came by on a sunny Wednesday afternoon for some pizza, we called ahead and was told pizza would be done in thirty minutes(which was perfect because our drive was 24 minutes)! This cute little pizzeria sits on the corner of 13th street. They have a 20% off a order of $35 or more right now and it's perfect if you order a pizza, calzone and some dessert(which is what we did). My boyfriend was unwilling to come at first, he's "cutting/leaning out". We're both pretty health conscious people, but he's been pretty strict about his diet. Well, when I opened the box in the car and he smelled the pizza... oh my did it smell amazing. He ate it and wasn't even mad that I ruined his streak! To simply put it, this place puts all the right herbs and spices on your pizza without making it greasy and heavy. That's what I love about a good pizza place. The owner was actually working the cashier too, and super nice! I appreciate business owner who are also working in the shop, and interact with their customers. I've driven and walked by this place for almost a year and always thought, man those Pizza slices that look like wings on the side of the building are awesome! Its like Nashville, or Austin, but here! and Pizza! Anyways, finally got around to ordering and am very sad I waited this long. Basil has some of the tastiest sauce/cheese on any pizza I've had in a long time! Delicious! The Mozz sticks were also, perfect! Crunchy on the outside, molten on the inside, and flavor explosions the whole time. Mix that with some awesome service and this place is a must visit. Pizza - Basil Pizzeria So no joke, this pizza is so good I want to cry! I crave east coast style pizza and it's rare to find it out here done well. I came across Basil's IG and from the moment I saw a pic of their cheese pizza I've been salivating, so I visited them last Saturday. The place is small, catering more to the takeaway and delivery crowd than eat-in. I met the owner when I was there and he's so nice and genuine. He shared his story with me about how he's been making it work though the pandemic with help from his family. There is one table and a few seats at the counter and in addition to pizza they serve calzones and Stromboli. We ordered a large cheese, a medium pepperoni and a garden salad. All it took was one bite of the salad for me to stop and say, I know this dressing. Sure enough it's Ken's Italian (the original!!) which you can't find out here so that was a nice surprise. And the pizza -- omg it was everything I hoped for and more. The dough, which proofs for two days is the right blend of chewy and crispy, very thin, but not flaky. It reminded me of my fave pizzeria in the world, Regina's in the North End of Boston. The sauce is made from Italian plum tomatoes and the cheese was meaty and gooey in exactly the right proportion. It was so good that our family of three killed a large and a medium and still had room for cannoli as dessert. This was such a great meal I highly encourage everyone to check them out. Delicious thin crust pizza! They have some classic flavor combos and they do thin slice really well. Not overly greesy or so cheesy that the slice looses its integrity, which I think is important! And just the right amount of toppings. I'd definitely come back if I'm in the area and looking for pizza and the only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because I wouldn't go out of my way to come back (except maybe for the cannoli - which was surprisingly really awesome!!) Side note on location and parking - I just double parked my car on my wide lane one way and popped in to pick up my order. It's pretty easy to double park. Having moved to the Bay Area from New York, I periodically get cravings for some real NY style pizza. Basil is the only place I've been to that really scratches the itch. Don't get me wrong, there are other places in the Bay that make decent pizza, but I can't think of any that I felt excited to go back to a second time. The people here clearly put a serious effort into matching the New York style, and it shows. The low reviews seem to be complaining about the crust being thin at a NY pizza joint. That's a bit like being upset that the ice cream you bought is cold. It is literally a defining feature of the thing itself.
