They used to have trays and tongs for us to grab what we want, then pass the tray over to the ladies, they would bags or box the buns and we would pay for it. It's not like that anymore. There used to be another location in San Francisco's Chinatown but that one closed down during the pandemic. There's usually a long line for a reason! Super hot and fresh! The stars of the show at this chinese bakery are the various savory buns - chicken mushroom, bbq pork, pineapple bun with pork, etc - as well as their egg tarts and whole cakes. You can get 3 of the mini pork buns for $1.75 or one for $.70 cents. Such a great deal. They also have about 15+ premade whole cakes and cake rolls ready for those who need it for a last-minute celebration. Note: they sell out of most of their items by around midday. Napoleon Super Bakery is wedged in between several other spots, and even next to another spot that touts "pastry", but isn't really a bread place so don't spend too much time deciding between the two. If you want bread, this is THE spot in Oakland Chinatown. It's not going to a flashy spot at all, which sort of lines up with most of the other places on this block, but don't get put off by its appearance. The bread here is not just cheap, but also quite tasty and offers a good variety of choices. The service here is good, but kind of manic at times because the people there will not have patience and will rush you if you take too long. Can't tell you how many times I've seen them get frustrated by people next to me who were taking a bit longer than usual. I get it, they're super busy almost all the time so just need to get people out with their bags or boxes of bread. They will have all of the bread needs you would want from a Chinese bakery. Some of my favorites here are the hotdog buns, the curry buns, the egg tarts, and really anything with green onions here. The breads here are cheap, and even cheap for Chinatown, as most places that aren't bakeries that try to sell the cheapo breads aren't even this cheap. Their breads here are also pretty big portion wise, and stuff like the curry buns have a decent amount of curry in there and flavored well. If you want good bread, good price, then Napoleon Super Bakery is your spot when you're in Oakland Chinatown. Really can't beat the price and quality. Just note, they are super busy almost all day round. a family member had raved about this bakery so i was pretty excited to give it a try. there was a fairly long line despite the pouring rain but it still moved pretty fast. they showcased a variety of delicious baked goods so i had to get a variety of pastries. i got some mini sausage buns, mini pineapple bun, a custard filled pineapple bun, egg tarts, portuguese egg tarts, a napoleon, and a cream filled bun. the crust on the tarts were very buttery & flakey. my personal favorite were the mini sausage buns. overall, everything was a hit! had i eaten it fresh out of the oven, it would've tasted 10x better. i would comeback solely for their sausage buns. read more

This was our first time visiting, and as my husband waited in the short line in the morning around 9:30am, I went up to look at the options they had. Totally forgot to take pictures but if remembering correctly, they had egg tarts ($2), pineapple buns ($3 for 4 large size, $2 for 4 smaller size), other pineapple buns with filling inside such as coconut and cream, and hot dog buns. I made the mistake of asking for more items after my initial order and the lady visibly got annoyed, lol, but it is what it is. Napoleon is your standard no frills Chinese bakery located in Oakland Chinatown. There's usually a line of 4-5 people lingering outside, but it goes quickly and it's typically a 10ish minute wait. It's pretty close to Ruby King, another popular local bakery; however, I haven't been there enough times to compare with Napoleon. I haven't ordered a huge variety of items here to get a sense of all their offerings, but have typically stuck with their egg tarts ($1.75 each), pre-packaged almond cookies ($2.50 for a pack of 8 medium ones), some other weird pre-packaged cookies (don't quote me, but I believe it's made of meat) that my mom likes, sticky rice (zhongzi at $4 a pop), and the occasional random baked goods like pineapple buns. The quality of the baked goods is decent given the price point. It's not knock your socks off good, but good enough to keep us coming back for more. The zhongzi is pretty solid and they're not stingy on the ingredients. Just a heads up though - the zhongzi will either be freshly cooked or frozen. They'll tell you that in advance to see if you still want it. We usually take it home to freeze and eat later so it makes no difference to us. Service is average for Chinatown - some ladies are friendly while others will scold customers that are being annoying LOL. As with many places in Chinatown, it's cash only. Forget about getting an itemized receipt. The last time we asked for one, they simply printed out a paper receipt with just the total amount paid, no itemization. So folks, do the math quickly in your head before paying so you know whether you're being charged the correct amount. Street parking only - during peak times, you may need to circle around quite a bit before being able to snag a spot. We got our wedding cake from Napoleon and were very happy with it. We came six months before, which was too early, and we were told to come closer to the wedding. There was a language barrier while ordering, so we wrote down all of the specifics and also had a friend who could speak Cantonese come with us when we ordered six weeks before the wedding. Payment was cash only, and we felt like we got great value. The ordering process was very casual. Napoleon delivered to the restaurant for the reception. It was completely hassle free, and absolutely worth the very reasonable delivery fee. We specified purple flowers, green leaves, and white striping. We were very happy with the cake's appearance--there was a subtle gradient with the purple flowers that we liked a lot. Napoleon constructed the cake there, bringing the tiers in one at a time. We got four tiers for 300 people, which was more than enough - we had about half the bottom tier leftover. Two tiers were mango mousse and two tiers were mixed fruit. The cake is very light and moist, and not too sweet. The wedding cake version is a little different from how Napoleon's cakes are usually constructed--there were two thick layers of sponge with a thick layer of mixed fruit or mango mousse in between. We enjoyed eating the cake after our wedding, including some that had been thawed from the freezer. read more

My absolute favorite item is their mini red bean pineapple buns. They are affordable and delicious at only 60 cents each or 5 for $2.50. I grew up eating red bean bo-lo baos in SF from a specific bakery and Napoleon's very closely resembles that of my childhood. The red bean paste is sweet and smooth, the pineapple crust gives a good crisp, and the bread dough is the perfect texture. I want to say I have tried all of the bakeries in Oakland Chinatown and Napoleon's has the best red bean pineapple bun. read more

Good Chinese bakery with great prices if you come in the afternoon. I often see a line going out the door when I walk by Napolean, so one day I decided to see what the fuss was all about. It's a tiny store for takeout only, I'd say 2-3 people could comfortable stand in front of the display and order but that's it. Because I came a bit later, around 4:30 pm on a weekday, most of their items were already sold out, including egg tarts. Pickings were slim, but I picked up two mini pineapple bins with custard filling at an incredible price of 2 for $1. Then I realized although there were 4 employees at the counter, but only 1 of them was actually working. Then I saw that there was NO line and the person who shouted the loudest and pushed the hardest (to the front counter) got served next. The grandma next to me waved her $50 bill and placed her order from the back of the shop and I died laughing inside my head. I finally made my way to the front and placed my order - 4 Egg Tarts please. The lady said, "Oh your next?" Ummm, I have been standing here for like 5 minutes, so yes I am next. She says "no more Egg Tarts, you want Po Tarts?" I asked, "what is the difference?" Her reply was, "50 cents." Well I actually meant was what is the difference between an Egg Tart versus a Po Tart? Doesn't matter, I need to get this for my younger daughter, so okay, 4 Po Tarts please. She said, "If you buy 1 more then I will throw in this beautiful pink box." I said, "sure, 5 Po tarts please." Simple and yet the best Chinese bakery in town. They do not sell dim sum but you can get some from a few doors down. Napoleon is a stable amongst the Chinatown community, serving freshly baked Chinese items for breakfast, dessert and snacks. The baked items are incredibly cheap and you can fill up a box (over $10) with their Pineapple bun/char soy bun, wife cakes (my dads all time favorite), egg tarts, cake rolls and much more. If for the bakery items itself, I will give a 5-stars, however 2 stars taken down due to we are no longer able to pick up the buns ourselves on a tray like pre-covid, they still have COVID restrictions and we have to wait in line and decide at once the items we want (in a crowded 3 rows of display shelf) when we enter the shop. It's so stressful and they lose their patience easily. The line is long because it's so hard to make a quick decision and the whole process is not efficient. This is a belated review for a birthday cake that I custom ordered for my partner. I called to place the order for a mango mousse 8 inch cake, requesting a custom message of "Happy Birthday Nat". They asked me what colors I wanted for the frosting, so I picked blue and white. The cake was ready for the time I had requested for pickup, there were a few people ahead of me at the bakery at the time (which is typical since they usually seem to receive a steady flow of business). It came with nice fresh fruit including strawberries and melons. I would say it's pretty good quality if you're looking for a traditional Chinese fruit cake. It was $28 which I paid in cash at the time, which was one of the cheapest I could find in the area after having shopped around at the other local Chinatown bakeries. read more

I didn't know the Napoleon Super Bakery in SF Chinatown recently closed, so now I have all the more reason to come over here for their delectable baked goods. Same as its departed Stockton Street counterpart, it is so popular the super compact space is in a constant state of chaos. The variety of pastries was impressive, but I didn't have a clue what most of them were. It's not the Sheng Kee type of bakery where everything is identified and clearly labeled, and you can pick what you want with your own tongs and place them on your own tray. No, any placard I saw next to a baked good was either in Chinese or illegible if there was any card at all. I had to guess and point at what looked good since I didn't speak Cantonese. I was bummed that they just run out of egg custard tarts. But hey, siince four pastries cost only $7.25, I felt the risk seemed minimal on getting a bad one. I was right. Napoleon is located in the heart of Oakland Chinatown for many years. Parking is always hit or miss, as everyone is double parked. My family always comes here out of convenience and I always dread coming here because of always getting pushed, stepped on, or trampled over. I usually go inside with my grandma because I do not want people to hurt her. It is always hectic inside, everyone is always pushing and shoving to get inside / to the front counter to be helped, as well as always yelling over everyone to be heard. Most of the prices for the bakery items has increased, while the quality is either the same or has decreased in quality. Also, it is cash only, so be prepared.
