First time visiting I was amazed at all the delicious looking desserts, cakes and pastries. I picked up a 6" Sicilian cake for a friend's birthday. $38 for their smallest cake is a little pricey but it was rich chocolate ganache. I don't know exactly what pistachio mousse tastes like but I wouldn't have guessed it was that if I hadn't read the description. I also couldn't taste the Frangelico that was supposed to be there. The cake looked pretty and tasted good but the birthday boy thought it was a little dry. The service at the counter was friendly and helpful. Just note they don't post their holiday hours. We went there the day after Christmas and they were closed. No note on the door or anything, just a closed door and the cases were empty and a single person working in the store, probably doing some last minute clean up. They have a great selection of baked goodies. The loaves looked really good and there were so many people getting the seed free French bread loaves. They have 2 choices, with or without seeds. The loaves of bread can be sliced for sandwiches or toast if you ask, I believe it's a free service. We got the scones as they last longer than the morning buns or other pastries. I waited too long to eat mine so my husband ate both of them. He enjoyed them and thought they were still fresh after a day. I got the triple ginger cookies, two of them so I wouldn't run out as fast. They are more like ginger snaps, they aren't soft cookies. They are very gingerly which I like. Stopped by before a drs appointment for a quick sweet treat. So many pastries to choose from. We ordered the mini eclair and the olive and onion cheese bread. The eclair was tender and just the right amount of whipped cream and chocolate. The cheese bread, however, was hard. I asked if it could be microwaved a little bit, unfortunately the cashier said they don't have ovens or any heat sources since all pastries are made at their other location. Service was quick and efficient overall. The prices are a little higher than most pastry shops. The parking is very hectic. All metered, street parking. This is very common at the Fruitvale store and the PIedmont store due to no baking is done there. My favorite is the Jezebel cookies. I usually order 2 sometimes 3 Jezebel cookies. 80% of the time one of the cookies will be rock hard stale. Very disappointing. The Berkeley store seems not to use this technique. read more

I'm really loving this bakery. The staff here is always friendly and knowledgeable, and it has a great local artisan French bakery vibe. There are glass cases full of breads, cakes, eclairs, tarts and other delicious looking baked goods. On the top of the cases are jars with a variety of cookies to choose from, as well as, one of my favorites, their lemon shortbread bar. The lemon shortbread bar is amazing. They stack the wedges in a large lidded glass jar, each wedge separated with a sheet of white parchment paper. I believe this is one of the hidden gems at La Farine. The shortbread crust Is tender and buttery and hold holds it shape well when you bite into it. The lemon curd is creamy with the right amount of tang, and there is a thin sweet layer of crunch on top of curd that puts this bar over the top. The balance of textures and flavors is perfect. I also highly recommend the chocolate eclairs. Each one is filled with a generous amount of piped whipped cream, a pate choux with good flavor and texture, and topped with a rich, silky layer of chocolate ganache. Overall their prices are reasonable -lemon shortbread bar $3, and chocolate eclair 3.50. I decided to give La Farine four stars because on a previous visit I had a slice of the Moka cake, and was not impressed. It is an attractive and delicious looking cake with lovely pale moka colored frosting surrounding layers of dark chocolate cake, however, the frosting lacked the coffee and chocolate flavor combo that I was looking forward to, and sadly the frosting was more waxy than creamy. That being said, I will definitely be back to search for the next delicious gems at this very lovely bakery on Piedmont Ave. read more

The staff is very nice and welcoming, which makes the whole experience even better. First Timer I've heard about this bakery for a while and have been intentionally meaning to stop by but it has been out of direction and parking is terrible. We happened to find a loading zone spot and were in the area for sushi a couple blocks away so it became a convenient option. My bf gave their Mocha Java Organic drip a 5/5. He likes to drink it black and cannot start his day without some good coffee. Only $3.65 for a large too! Very reasonably priced! We tried their raspberry croissant and it was a 5/5. Very moist, soft, fluffy layers with texture from the nuts on top and fresh raspberry marmalade inside. It was around $4.99 though with it being the size of an iPhone 6. A bit pricy but in my opinion, worth it once in a while just to try 'em out. Some staff didn't seem too excited to be there this afternoon. The one who took my order and prepped the coffee was a bit more cheery but still it wasn't a spectacular customer service experience. As I came in, a lot of the customers didn't know exactly where to line up or stand in which direction so there was a bit of that confusion. Overall, I'm not a ginormous sweets person unless it's to die for. I wouldn't be seeking out this bakery again just as a drive by and convenience thing but that is personal preference. The chocolate and frangipane will arrest your attention, but the plain croissant is really a favorite of mine. ( And I've never heard a fellow patron pronounce it "cwuh-sant;" which is a relief. If you're going to speak French, speak French, there's nothing wrong with that The orange and currant scone will delight. The egg tarts look okay, though I've never had one. I've been to La Farine Bakery's many locations in Oakland: College Ave, Fruitvale and the Piedmont Ave over the course of 20 years...their popular item has always been the morning bun but I prefer an almond croissant that's flaky, with a nice, sweet almond filling. The big draw for me is their fruit tarts and lemon cheesecake...the tart crust is buttery, cookie-like and keeps firm while holding a pastry cream and decorated artfully with fresh fruit...sooo good! Whenever I bring one to a gathering it's a big hit...I used to make them myself but appreciate the ease of picking one up. The lemon cheesecake is simplicity: creamy, yet firm atop graham cracker crust with a delicious lemon topping that isn't too tart or cloyingly sweet...and at a perfect price point! The madeleine was nothing special but the cheesecake was great! The filling was very soft and smooth, with layers of a strawberry mousse/jelly. Anyone who had been to Paris, France can relate to my review. This bakery/pastry shop's quality and taste is nearly as similar to usual Parisian boulangerie/ pattisarie with reasonable prices.. Their bread is so organic and earthly that you enjoy with Bordier Butter,Camembert cheese, olive oil with balsamic, or simply by just the bread itself. It is still unclear why they have benches in the bakery but still has signs prohibiting people from sitting down on those benches, since many places have opened up for dining and sitting and the place has its door wide open and so there is plenty of fresh air circulating the bakery and even pretty cold in there. There is also such a long bench that it would make it possible to social distance in the store. I say it's cold because our pastries were pretty cold. We got the morning bun, and although it seemed fresh, the pastry was cold as was the meat in it. It could have been warmed up. The cheese bread was also cold but crispy. I think there is a lot of potential for the pastries but because there was no effort to keep the pastries warm or to warm them up, while the door is open in the morning, it feels questionable that they are trying to maintain quality pastries. The cashier was sort of welcoming - you go to the register when you come in, place an order and they have it ready pretty quickly. I've been going to La Farine since 1998 and, IMHO, it is the absolute best bakery in the East Bay. The breads and pastries are consistently fresh and delicious, and the fact that I've seen the same employees at their Oakland location (the oldest location) for the past 25 years tells you that they obviously treat their employees well and generously. The Almond Tea Cake was everything I expected and more. So delicious, I went back after taking a few bites in my care and bought 6 more to take to my family! The texture of this pastry is somewhere in between moist yet held together so well without breaking super easily when broken apart. The taste was so simple and sweet, and the almond taste was spot on! So if you're a fan of almonds, or nutty taste, I def rec this tea cake! Tbh, typing this is making me crave for more!
