Here is the amazing and talented baker.

Have you ever heard of Greenhouse Bakery in Oakland, CA? It's the best kept secret for those with a sweet tooth. Greenhouse Bakery is one of those hidden gems you almost don't want to share because it's that good. Tucked inside the Maxwell District of Oakland, this cottage bakery is run right out of the baker's home. Yes, the house is green. It feels like you're discovering something special every time you score a box. The system is unique: you have to be on the text list to place an order. A couple of days before a bake, you'll get a text with that week's offerings, usually six or seven treats inspired by the season. The catch? You have to be fast because things sell out in minutes. I've only managed to snag six chocolate chip cookies once, and they were gone before I even realized it. But let me tell you, they were worth every second of the scramble. Greenhouse Bakery typically offers pastry boxes on the first and fourth Thursday of each month, with first-come, first-served bake sales on the second Saturday. Everything is crafted with care and creativity, so no matter what's on the menu, you're in for something delicious. Because it's in a residential neighborhood, parking is street-only and it's important to be mindful of the neighbors. The little bit of effort it takes to navigate the system is part of the charm. If you want in, join the text list at GreenhouseBakeryOakland.com or text 858-531-3985. Do yourself a favor and get on it. You'll be glad you did.

I've been following Green House Bakery on Instagram for years. For various reasons, I never made it up there or pre-ordered until today. Reading reviews and recent posts, I anticipated there would be enough extra things to purchase a la carte if I got there before opening, arrive 1-1.5 hrs early to be safe. I got there @9AM and there were less than 20 people already in line. They opened earlier today, the line started moving around 945AM vs 10AM. I got the last cinnamon roll, and an onion and gruyere croissant in addition to the mini passionfruit pie I pre-ordered (pick up towards the front of the line). I was at my car @1010AM. Everything was really good but really recommend the pie when it's available. If I was sharing with others I would've bought more. Staff (all women) were nice, and parking wasn't challenging like I expected from the reminders to not double park. PS there was self serve coffee at the base of the front door walk way. Also, someone was selling flowers and pumpkin planters.

My husband and I have been ordering from Green House for long enough to recognize Rachel out in the wild. We've done birthday cakes, holiday cookie boxes, dinner rolls and cinnamon buns, as well as her (anything but) standard pastry boxes. I feel pretty safe in saying if she's offered it, we've tried it. Everything, EVERYTHING, has consistently been the gold standard, blue-ribbon version. I don't know how she does it. It's not just the perfect bakes it's the flavors - her vision is incredible, swirling together sweet and savory, every bite is the perfect bite. Of course I wish she'd open a bakery but that's not how it works, and that makes it even more special. I've only missed out on one thing I wanted to try (come back soon, peach sweet rolls!!). All in all, best of the best, A+, no notes. Proud to support.

Green House Bakery is the best!!! Fresh seasonal ingredients and service is consistently warm and welcoming. Highly recommend for any occasion big or small. I've tried nearly everything - their donuts, pies, cakes, croissants, cookies, etc. They are phenomenal every single time. When the stars align, I bring their baked goods to family and friend get-togethers and they are always the crowd favorite. You can pre-order online or wait in a first come, first serve line depending on their bake schedule. Their bake schedule is posted on their website and Instagram as well as sent out via their e-mail list. I recommend following them on IG plus signing up for e-mail/text notifications to stay updated. Re: online pre-orders -- another review is stating that you can add things to you cart prior to their drop time on Hotplate. This is NOT correct - you have to wait until 8:00:00pm (or whatever the drop time is) to add things to your cart. You HAVE to be fast in adding things to your cart (as in within seconds) -- that being said, I don't understand why people feel inclined to leave bad reviews about this when the system clearly works for everyone else lol. Once items are added to your cart, they are secured for 5:00 minutes while you check out. Sometimes others abandon their cart or remove things from their cart which makes them available to add to your cart again. Again, you have to be quick but I've been able to secure something basically every time I've tried (which is a lot haha). Other things to note - street parking only and there is street cleaning on 1st/3rd Thursdays. If you are coming to wait in a FCFS line for Saturday bakes, be aware that others line up 1+ hour ahead of time, and your wait can be that long depending on your place in line. If you haven't tried them yet, I highly encourage you to, the wait is worth it and you won't regret it! :) My favorites are the strawberry cream pie, cinnamon rolls, chocolate cake, and anything with passion fruit.

There are glass cases full of breads, cakes, eclairs, tarts and other delicious looking baked goods. On the top of the cases are jars with a variety of cookies to choose from, as well as, one of my favorites, their lemon shortbread bar. The lemon shortbread bar is amazing. They stack the wedges in a large lidded glass jar, each wedge separated with a sheet of white parchment paper. I believe this is one of the hidden gems at La Farine. The shortbread crust Is tender and buttery and hold holds it shape well when you bite into it. The lemon curd is creamy with the right amount of tang, and there is a thin sweet layer of crunch on top of curd that puts this bar over the top. The balance of textures and flavors is perfect. I also highly recommend the chocolate eclairs. Each one is filled with a generous amount of piped whipped cream, a pate choux with good flavor and texture, and topped with a rich, silky layer of chocolate ganache. Overall their prices are reasonable -lemon shortbread bar $3, and chocolate eclair 3.50. I decided to give La Farine four stars because on a previous visit I had a slice of the Moka cake, and was not impressed. It is an attractive and delicious looking cake with lovely pale moka colored frosting surrounding layers of dark chocolate cake, however, the frosting lacked the coffee and chocolate flavor combo that I was looking forward to, and sadly the frosting was more waxy than creamy. That being said, I will definitely be back to search for the next delicious gems at this very lovely bakery on Piedmont Ave.

Sometimes, the pizzas are a little overcooked which causes the crust to be extra crispy and a little burnt. But it doesn't change the deliciousness of it. It doesn't matter what they put on the pizza of the day, I know it's going to be tasty. Arizmendi's pizza 100% makes me forget about meat on pizza. I have tried a couple of their baked goods, which have always been good as well. They also have soups of the day, which I surprisingly haven't tried. If you're ordering more than 1 pizza, I'd recommend calling ahead of time so that you don't have to wait a while. There's typically 2 cashiers, always a small line, but you'd be in and out under 30 minutes max. No music, just the sounds of pure hustle trying to get everyone served. There is limited indoor and outdoor seating so keep that in mind. Parking may be tricky as well as there are a lot of surrounding businesses.

Everyone has causes they care about, and many of us do our own advocacy in different ways, but not everyone wants to sign petitions while trying to cross the street or grab lunch. Today, one person became very insistent when I politely declined. He then accused me (and apparently others) of not wanting to engage because of his skin color, which was completely inappropriate and inaccurate. My decision had nothing to do with our skin .. I simply was not interested in signing anything or stopping to discuss a petition at that moment. It escalated to the point where two other women nearby also felt uncomfortable enough to respond. One said, "This is not the way to do it," and another said, "I don't even have money." It was unfortunate that his approach put people in that position. Just a heads up for anyone visiting: be prepared to be approached at the crosswalk, especially since the light can be long. On a positive note: the pizzeria itself was busy, but everyone inside was pleasant, I found a quiet corner to sit, the coffee was warm, and my $3 slice and $1.25 coffee hit the spot.
