This was my first time at this particular bakery here in the Alameda and it was after we had a delicious waffle breakfast!! Perhaps I'm used to the underground mall in New York with all of their decadent pastries in the Chelsea marketplace in New York, but this particular spot in Alameda was supposed to be one of the best pastries here on this cute little island. Perhaps it's just a cute little island aesthetics, but the pastries seemed rather traditional. The Yuzu tart was tasty and had good flavor, it was also around 2 PM on a Sunday, so maybe all the good pastries were gone. Not love anymore. I was shocked and turned off when I walked in after Bev left. We've lost the only high-end bakery in Alameda and Oakland since Grace Baking in Market Hall went down hill years ago. Crispian's new owners are low end and not generous. What happened to the day old bread give away? Selling it? What's with the massive display case blocking a major passageway for delivery people and the quickest emergency exit? What's with all the cheap looking, dyed cakes? And why does everything taste too sweet and cheap? What's with the disguting coating on my tongue when I take a bite! AND why won't they honor gift certificates bought from the recent previous owners? NOT BEV'S NY-TRAINED, BAKERY CHEF QUALITY. Tacky, tacky. Bev! You sold to the wrong people. Food has gone to junk and looks like Safeway. Quality ingredients are OUT. I don't taste butter and the cheap substitute ingredients can be felt and tasted. Custom cakes have always been great, but I FINALLY found the BEST cake! Order the Passionfruit Chantilly - add fresh raspberries and strawberries for an extra charge - so worth it. Light, airy, not too sweet and just the right amount of curd and fresh berries to balance everything out. It was a showstopper - kids to adults raved. I have only had the WF Berry Chantilly once, but I think folks think this is better. The presentation is more detailed and precise. Seems a bit less sweet also. read more

I bought a pumpkin gateau which was made like a carrot cake. There were cake layers and frosting layers. The frosting was sweet and there were three different frosting flavors on the cake. I arrived on a Tuesday, so there was no bread avaliable until Thursday. You can park in the "P V" lot, but there is limited street parking avaliable. I had a last minute need for a dessert and I was relieved to see Crispian opened early on a Sunday. I called in to see what they had and was told they had the passion fruit tart. I was able to make the purchase over the phone and pick it up around 10am. Everything was ready and perfect. I picked up a few other items while there and shared them at the luncheon. I'm going to focus on the tart because to be honest, it garnered a buzz for how good it was. Perfect balance of flavor, tart, sweet.... absolute deliciousness. Apparently, I've been remiss in reviewing my many visits to Crispian Bakery in the past six years. Well, we've certainly been patronizing this business, even during the dreaded COVID years, when you had to order from across a table set in the doorway. I have an app on my phone called Too Good to Go. It's free to join and members are notified of businesses that have an excess of food that they would rather sell at a discount rather than to throw it away. You pay a minimal amount that usually works out to 1/3 of regular retail to purchase a "surprise bag" of whatever it is that they sell. Yesterday, I paid $4.99 to pick up a bag valued at $15. You don't get to choose what you get. It's kind of a luck of the draw situation. Today, we got 2 Ginger Scones, 1 Cinnamon Twist and 1 Almond Croissant. All tasted fresh and were delicious. On other visits, we've purchased Croissants, Cream Puffs, Coffee drinks. Once, I ordered a 1/2-sheet Birthday Cake. For the best selection, go earlier in the day. Was on a time crunch and decided to give this another try. Grabbed the apple slice thinking it would be a good item to split. Yes, it was a huge pastry but that was the only good thing about it. The filling made this one a 1/5 experience but I rounded up to 2 in case it was just another off day. Way too much of the goopy cornstarch jelly filling or whatever it was and too much of a spice that made it taste unpleasant, maybe clove? I decided to give them a try when I saw they were offering discounted leftovers on the Too Good to Go App. I arrived a little earlier than the designated pickup window, but the friendly staff there informed me it was possible to pick it up early and just tap into the app to confirm I had picked up; I really appreciate them sharing this tip with me since this whole time, I was unaware you could do that with TGTG orders, and it saved me having to wait until the pickup time began. They gave me four pastries total - a croissant, a bun shaped like a cinnamon roll but which was more savory/spicy and not sweet (not sure what this is called), and two danishes of differing flavors (one tasted more like jam with some custard, while the other was more like apricot or peach preserves in the middle). I did find the roll a bit spicy, it probably has jalapenos or something in it, but it was nice having an item that was less sweet in the bunch. The danishes were good. I'm not personally much of a fan of croissants, but it was decent. All the buns still tasted pretty fresh and not stale. I ordered my wedding cake and desserts from Crispian Bakery with a number of special requests and they went above and beyond to deliver. I am Filipino and really wanted to have that represented in the food so I asked them if they could make bite sized bibingkas as well as bite sized tartlets that embodied Halo-Halo for our desserts. They were absolutely wonderful. My family from Hawaii kept going back for the treats so that was all the proof I needed that they were delicious. Not only was the taste scrumptious but their presentation was on point. Now for a review of the cake. I LOVED IT!!! Ughhh, I didn't want to cut into it - it was everything I had envisioned in my mind. But alas, I had to share. The inside was just as yummy as the outside was beautiful. We had sheet cakes for the guests so I was lucky enough to get to bring the actual cake home at the end of the night. We had a "cake" get together with friends a few nights later to savor the last of the cake. Soooo delicious. We had ordered the passionfruit buttercream cake. The case offers several different delectables, I chose a Cinnamon Twist and my wife a Ginger Scone. We also ordered hot drinks (Mocha for me and Chai tea for her). I was charging my my car down the street and while waiting for my Lyft home I decided to pop into Crispian's where I've gone a few times before to see what they have baking. It was an afternoon on a weekday so they had quite an assortment of pastries, scones, muffins, cookies, and whole cakes left. I tried their speciality pastry of the day, a Chocolate Almond Croissant with fresh Apricot Jam 10/10. It was flaky but not dry. The mixture of the three flavors made it a super decadent happy little party in my mouth. Must TRY! I heard they rotate the fruit filling in their specialty pastry every week. What an amazing spur of the moment find! Although we arrived a bit late in the day for a little bakery...10:00am...Crispian Bakery did not disappoint. We tried their specialty twice baked croissant of the day which I think had a chocolate hazelnut praline filling. It was so flakey and buttery and not overly sweet. We also bought two chocolate cupcakes and a chocolate eclair which my husband devoured before I could snap a photo. The cupcakes were outstanding, and the eclair was top notch inside and out.
