Their morning buns though! I encountered a box of them through work and had a hard time restraining myself.

As a lover of artisan breads, Semifreddi's is one of my favorite local bakeries. How cool would it be to get a behind the scenes look at how all this delicious bread is made. Our group arranged and was fortunate to get a tour of their World Headquarters and bakery in Alameda's Harbor Bay Business Park. Our group met in the lobby area and met with a coordinator to ensure we adhered to the dress requirements regarding clothing, shoes and jewelry and we were given hairnets to wear for our tour of the bakery plant. No pictures were allowed past the lobby. We were then greeted by Mike Rose, one of the two owners of Semifreddi's. He gave us background of how Semifreddi's came to existence and their eventually move to this current location. We then proceeded to the ingredients warehouse and were joined by Semifreddi's other owner, Tom Franier, to see the large bags of flour and flavorings and the owners talked about how they are source and delivered. We then went onto to the bakery floor to see the how the how the dough was formed and the rising process, baking of the bread in the banks of ovens, packaging of the breads d and how it was prepared for delivery out to the stores. This is a daily process as the breads are baked fresh daily. The owners are passionate about their business. They talked about their business model and their view of taxes, dealings with retailers, and with the political scene. Just say, they made the 1 hour 45 min tour very interesting. At the end, each of us received a gift bag of Semifreddi goodies, which included a baguette, olive bread, cinnamon twist, blueberry croissant, two bags of croutons, tattoo stickers, and café menu from the Kensington bakery shop. Thanks Mike and Tom for the great tour of your great bakery. It was memorable for our group.

I haven't been inside the bakery in Alameda but I buy their baguettes and sweet batard every chance I get when I see it available. Toasted and then eaten with a slice of good quality butter and a nice cup of coffee on a sunny morning....life is good.

I had no idea that Semifreddi's does tours. We were lucky enough to get a guided tour by the owners. I love tours. Usually when it comes to food, the tour only consist of looking at the machines and the guide explaining what each one is used for. There is usually no activity. To my surprise Semifreddi bakes round the clock. We were able to see hamburger buns, Cinnamon rolls, Morning buns and variety of rolls in the making. They let us try their classic Sourdough bread, right off the rack. If you haven't tried fresh sourdough, you are missing out. We made a pizza using the focaccia bread and now that I know the bread is made fresh, we are new fan of Semifreddi. The owners gave us a run down on the facility from the flour/sifting room, yeast refrigerator, massive oven and several prep stations. The smell of bread and pastries baking was AMAZING!! The breads have the basic 4 ingredients...Flour, water, salt and yeast. Which makes them Vegan!! Yes HOLLA AT ME!! The only bread that isn't Vegan is the Challah, Cinnamon Twist, and Brioche. They do not offer any Vegan pastries. I found out they deliver to all the bakeries/stores every morning. Any bread that did not sell, will be removed from the racks and brought back to the facility and broken down as chicken feed. So if you are buying a Semifreddi bread, know that it is fresh. If you plan to do a tour here, there are a few rules no dresses (long pants), closed two shoes, no earrings, no jewelry with stones (bands are ok) and I recommend you wear a t-shirt (not long sleeve) or a thin long sleeve shirt. This place is hot, due to the oven being on all day long. The owner of the company is hilarious. I don't know how to describe his character...lets just say very interesting and out there. LOL. He made the tour a lot of fun. I definitely recommend Yelp CM's coordinate a tour here. It's one of the best food tours I've been to. In the end we received an awesome Schwag bag which contained (2) Biscotti, baguette, Rosemary Focaccia or Challah, Reusable shopping bag, French pastry (mines was a blueberry muffin), temporary tattoo, and a menu of their café. Thanks Semifreddi for the awesome tour!! Check out the awesome video below. This isn't fast forward, they really move this fast. Way Cool!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBfA2oIl-qo&feature=youtu.be

I was cheering up at the thought of trying their good looking pastries and bread and I was about to order myself a number of items. I went to order the chicken pesto focaccia and the Oldet Gentlemen at the counter was so rude. He corrected me and called it a pizza with an attitude. I also ordered a coffee and he rudely and impatiently asked me the size. This is my first time here so I was maybe a bit slower to order and know the menu names and sizes but there was only one pesto chicken thing on the menu and it's in the shape of focaccia bread. I stopped ordering anything else because the gentlemen was so rude. I will now hesitate to visit this place and will never buy anything. if he is the cashier again. I usually order a lot of different things when I'm trying new places and I like to be loyal and frequent places and always leave a tip but I will def think twice before visiting next time. Their chicken pesto was okay. The english muffins looked really good but I didn't want to purchase because of the interaction.

Jamie W and I decided to pay a visit after our gym workout because we figured we could reward ourselves for breaking a sweat. Arriving in the last hour before closing, we were happily anticipatory that their display case was still well stocked. It was no surprise how gorgeous it was. We had seen the Instagram photos of the visually striking, trompe l'oeil "fruit" pastries (Photo 6). They were indeed mini-works of art with thin, white-chocolate shells that easily crack open to reveal appropriately sweet fillings. We limited ourselves to four items because we didn't want to get carried away...literally. Besides, they weren't cheap. Our priciest item was the $14.50 Peanut shaped like a giant peanut shell and filled with a light peanut butter mousse. There was also a strawberry gelee and a crisp peanut butter wafer that helped reflect the intended PBJ concept. It was just a bit sweet for me. The second item, the $12 Coconut, was my favorite. It was designed to look like a perfectly cracked open coconut with the outer hull made of textured milk chocolate and the "meat" made of white chocolate (Photo 7). The macapuno entremet core reflected co-owner Monique Feybasse's Filipino background. It consisted of coconut whipped cream mousse freckled with macapuno and coconut shavings, and a chocolate coconut sponge cake. The entirety was a true tropical experience. The $8.50 Pistachio Eclair was the most straightforward of the quartet with a golden pate-a-choux shell, pistachio pastry cream with a matcha-like powder, and chopped pistachios (Photo 10). The basic approach taken was enhanced by the quality of the execution. The $4.50 Madeleine was a comparative bargain and quite a treat, providing a soft-crumbed sponge cake covered in a pistachio coating shaped like a seashell (Photo 9). Monique and her husband Paul clearly know what they're doing, having extensive experience in Michelin-starred restaurants like the acclaimed Geranium in Copenhagen. On Sunday afternoon, there was a constant stream of customers, many of them regulars who knew exactly what to order. FOOD - 4 stars...craftsmanship and execution are aces, some satisfy more than others, also a bit pricey AMBIANCE - 3.5 stars...crowded so hard to tell beyond the striking displays SERVICE - 4 stars...nice though necessarily transactional TOTAL - 4 stars...definitely an eyeful even more than a mouthful RELATED - Exploring Oakland? The seating is mostly at table tables along the wall walls of window. It was kind of neat to be able to sit and watch people walk by in the traffic as it ebbed and flowed toward the bridge. The early morning was rather quiet outside so it wasn't noisy at all. I had a lovely chai latte, extra spicy. It was perfect after the chilly walk to this little space of warmth. They had a nice selection of pastries, ultimately I chose a danish because I love them. This one did not disappoint. It was tender and flaky and went perfectly dipped in my chai. If ever, we are in the area again, I will definitely pay another visit. It was nice to step into a local place that wasn't a chain. I think the quality of staff and consumable offerings was just so much better than you would find at one of the other places.
